This place is unethical and incredibly expensive.  They require a vet exam for all puppy vaccinations, which puts each trip to the vet at around $120-$150--for the basic vaccinations you'll be paying probably close to 800 dollars.   I have friends elsewhere in the city who spent close to 200 total for all vaccinations.  Does a child get a full doctor's exam before each vaccination?  No they don't.  They start late almost always, at least 10-15 minutes in my experience and often longer.  This place attempts to take advantage of pet owners and is run really, really poorly.  Often during long waits I'm the only one waiting, it's empty.  There are like 7 people at the front desk but apparently they're so understaffed it takes forever to see a vet.  Pet healthcare is an entirely unregulated field full of deception and greed.  There are ethical vets, go elsewhere. I have been a client of this practice through 4 dogs over 19 years. I think Dr. Farber is an excellent vet. But the practice has grown "too big for its britches" basically. They have too many desk attendants and they don't always have the same information. Years ago they had an amazing front desk team who knew everyone and every pet. This is no longer the case. They also seem to charge for more tests and things than discussed and there are always more services on the bill. I just reached the breaking point when they would not give my dog his needed blood panel for his medications-unless we booked a 6 month visit also. This test alone costs over $400. They constantly try to upsell services. and this appointment is just a way to add 125 to our invoice. There is no longer a feeling of personal service or attention here either. I have moved on to West Village Vet and Dr. Lee and am very happy. Read Less

I have been a long standing client of West Chelsea Veterinary.  It is no longer the quant local veterinary hospital it used to be.  They used to preform routine exams, cleaning ears, nails, scent glands and drawing blood while you were in the room and these procedures were always done by the doctor. Now, the tech assistant will escort you to an exam room where the doctor is waiting.  You discuss your pet issues or as in my case it was a routine exam to receive a travel health certificate.  After discussing my dogs health issues with the doctor.  They took my dog to the back room which they started to due a few years back, which I have to say... I did not appreciate.  Then they have you go wait in the front reception area. While they preformed routine procedures.  Well, again mine visit was not an emergency, I just needed a health certificate to fly.  My dog did need blood work.  I waited about 30 minutes in the reception area and then a different assistant from the one that was assisting the doctor came out with my dog, she handed me my dog and said that they cleaned my pets scent glands and that "they were full, they were hard and it was painful for your pet.  I have to say, I was a little stunned as I did not ask for the scent glands to be cleaned.  I paid my bill and went home. When I got home that day, I know my dog was not feeling well, by the next day, my dog was in trouble and I had to rush my dog to the vet, they had to lance the infected scent gland.  When I told the doctor what happened and how one of the assistants came out with my dog the day before and said it was a difficult procedure, one that I did not even ask for.  The doctor indicated that she could not remember which assistant did the procedure!!!Well, I thought the DOCTOR was preforming the procedures and doing the routine health exam and NOT SOME ASSISTANT who is not qualified or educated to preform veterinary exams.  If my dog had a problem the assistant should have INFORMED THE DOCTOR, who I thought was in the know.  But after the emergency visit and close to $1500 later, the doctor I thought was preforming a routine health care exam, was clueless to what had happened!  Sorry to say... after 20 some years... Dr. Farber,  your office is not what it use to be.  Your staff of doctors are only preforming patch and past jobs and not addressing the bigger issues. My dog has been plagued with ear issues for years, they have given me cleaning solutions and an ointments however... NOT ONCE DID ANYONE EVER LOOK INTO MY DOGS EAR CANALS. Which in dogs, the ear canals are very long and they get hair built up and need proper cleaning, especially when a dog is plaque with ear issues for years, you would think they would get a scope and LOOK INSIDE!  Hello! You would think all the times I had to bring my dog in for a routine exams and to get her teeth cleaned that when my pet was sedated they would CLEAN THE EARS... no NEVER!My dog is now deaf!  And I had to have my dog ears cleaned out where they had to sedate my pet to preform this.  I am wondering if only the doctors at West Chelsea Vets, if only they looked down the ear canal 12 years ago and addressed the issue back then and not just clean it with a cotton ball and have me put ointment to stop my pet from itching. It's like if you know a dog has ear itching issues, you would think a doctor would LOOK INSIDE to see what is going on.  This was NEVER DONE IN 12 + YEARS. It's like cleaning my dog teeth which was done every year...you sedated my pet and clean the teeth, at that time you also could have really cleaned the dogs ear canals.  If you had only done this...I wonder if my dog could hear today!    Every time I brought my pet in I told the vet that my pet is continually itching the ears.  No it is not the nice little Veterinarian around the corner.  It is a factor and assistances with no Veterinarian education are preforming procedures on your pet that the doctors should be!!!  I am never going back.  On another visit the vet recommended my dog getting a sonogram well $1300 later, they told me she had cancer of the spleen and gave me medicine to give every day.  Well, I took my pet to another vet and they told me that you never give a little dog this size this medicine.  It is worst then the diagnosis causing my pet to eat like crazy.  He also said you can not tell if your pet has cancer from a sonogram, her blood work is fine, kidneys are fine, liver is fine.  True my pet is 15 years old but this medicine will surly kill her before the cancer will if she has cancer.  I took her off the medicine she dropped the weight and is STILL ALIVE after West Chelsea Veterinarian said I would be LUCKY TO IF SHE LASTED UNTIL CHRISTMAS!!!  HAPPY NEW YEAR... my dog is still with me.  DON'T GO TO THE VET.  YOU WAIT FOREVER TO SEE THE VET.  USUALLY AN HOUR AFTER YOUR APPOINTMENT AND THEY CHARGE YOU AN ARM AND A LEG AND THE DOCTORS DO NOT PREFORM THE ROUTINE HEALT PROCEDURES. As other reviews have warned this practice tends to find ways to charge extra for unnecessary tests. As a physician, I came prepared to request for specific vaccinations that my dog needed based on the minimal exposure risk she has to certain infections (ie, she does not go to dog runs or wooded areas - she strictly stays on the street and I have been extremely careful given that I have a toddler at home) I was looking for a general physical exam to make sure my 6 yr old german shepherd was healthy and an update on her bordetella vaccine. The vet noticed she lost 3 lbs and tried to indicate that maybe my dog was developing an illness - she did not consider that it was likely that my german shepherd lost some muscle mass from me no longer taking her on regular runs since I had my baby (which I mentioned to her). She wanted me to come back in the next week to have my dog's weight checked. The practice charged me a biohazard disposal fee but my dog only received an intra-nasal vaccine - there was no syringe to dispose of (no blood exposure at all - to/from my pet)! From the visit, I felt she was trying to make me feel more concerned about my dog's health than I needed to be considering my dog is only 6 yrs old with no alarm symptoms - which would have lead to unnecessary (and expensive) tests had I not been more informed given that I am in healthcare myself.I will be looking for another practice. If you live in UWS - I recommend Lincoln Square Vet Hospital. Read Less

Their cost was reasonable and while they discussed options available for us if the current treatment did not work, they did not try to upsell us with treatments or medications like most other vets. Will definitely come back here and location is very central near subways, penn station. And just to be clear, we are not getting paid or compensated for this review in any way. West Chelsea Vet has responsible, caring vets BUT it is hard for them not to recommend thousands of dollars worth of preventative care whenever you visit.  I guess part of their salary is based on commissions.  They will file papers for insurance company but make sure that it is done before you leave and you have a copy of what they are filing.  Insurance does not pay for dental or shots or well dog visits.  So if you are taking your pet for any of these procedures and for a medical problem as well, at the same time, ask for the medical aspect of the visit to be filed separately.  West Chelsea encouraged one insurance company, which is about $1,000 a year (I have two dogs) and so far I have laid out about $8,000 in less than four years for my two dogs.  I don't know if it is worth the price of insurance but at least I want to be able to claim what is legitimate. Unfortunately I feel like most veterinary practices in New York fall into the category of very impersonal, money making schemes to which West Chelsea is no exception. The first few visits were very pleasant as my french bulldog puppy didn't require anything other than his vaccinations which any nurse can administer. After that it just became chaotic.Almost every visit to West Chelsea we saw a different vet as the one you were previously seeing is busy or not working that day, making the experience very impersonal, in my opinion. WC misdiagnosed my pup for allergies when his symptoms were clearly Demodex mites. I even asked the vet we saw that day if we should test for mites, she was certain it was allergies and I succumbed to the fact that as a vet she knew more than myself and google. $293 later including an allergy shot, allergy shampoo and pain killers our situation got worse. Demodex if not treated spreads rapidly so money wasted, a misdiagnosis and time lost for my now badly suffering fur friend. I mentioned this to the next vet I saw who brushed off the misdiagnosis and said he would've diagnosed it as allergies too. Perhaps they should be more thorough when examining dogs, esp puppies, as Demodex, from a quick internet search, seems v common for pups under the age of one and he was showing every symptom.I took him back to the vet only for them again to state they think it's allergies, this time I demanded a skin scraping and low and behold he had Demodex mites. They offered me Nexgard as treatment which I'm not comfortable with as I've read many dogs have had adverse reactions to it. However, they were not understanding of this at all and offered me little to no alternatives. I spent hours researching to find an alternative to Nexgard that I was comfortable with and had been tested to work for Demodex. After a telephone discussion with the vet, he wasn't even aware of the fact that this alternative product worked for Demodex. His mites have cleared and I now need to solve his bacterial skin infection which I will go to a new vet for. The antibiotics they gave him for his secondary bacterial infection did absolutely nothing - this was another $63 shot down the drain. After reading about it I realized it was a shot that would stay in his system for two weeks, opposed to a pill a day which seems like the better option cause you can actually tell if it's working after a few days, instead of dosing once off for two weeks. I spoke to an alternative vet, not from West Chelsea, who said they only administer this shot to dogs who absolutely cannot keep down pills. Long story short, I feel hard done by, by this veterinary practice. Read Less

Almost a year later and still dealing with the damage done to our 11-year old lab's elbow. Doctor Greco said she may have a mast cell tumor and took a biopsy that has never healed. It cost a small fortune to do the tests, she thankfully does not have cancer and we brought her back a few times and nothing was done to help her heal. In fact we were even told by another doctor when we called for advice (since it had reopened time and time again) that the tests done were not conclusive and she recommended more testing not to mention she was very nasty. My dog clearly has a hygroma and the issue was only exacerbated by expensive unnecessary testing not to mention we were scared beyond belief as we love our dog beyond words. Please steer clear of this place. The price tag doesn't match the level of care. I don't care what we need to pay I just want an experienced caring doctor who has my pet's best interest in mind. Despite our best efforts to heal her holistically, her biopsy wound still opens weekly and she will see a dermatologist next week. Thank you for absolutely nothing West Chelsea. Never again. Hands down this is the best vet I've ever been to. I called them very late on a holiday weekend (Friday) and they were closing in an hour and a half. I thought my garbage disposal dog had swallowed a bone that was causing an obstruction because of course he ate it whole and I was worried that if I didn't get him to the vet I would either wait the whole long weekend to see if he keeled, or I would pay an exorbitant amount to have him seen on a holiday by an emergency vet. I'd have to sell a lung, but of course that would have been my option. Fortunately for me WCV was open and told me to come over and they'd see me right away.I went in and I was literally there maybe 30 minutes. The front desk staff were so nice, oh my gosh. I felt like they knew me already! The very kind vet (I forgot her name) saw me immediately, did x-rays, told me that my dog's stomach of steel had obliterated the bone and he was fine. I was not only relieved, but felt that my dog was treated so well here for the short time we were here. I am just so in love with this place! There is nothing that gives me more peace of mind than knowing my sweet pups will be safe and taken care of if anything were to happen. This is, for the time I am in Manhattan, my vet of choice. This review is not a reflection of the staff at West Chelsea Vet (just the one doctor in particular). The staff, and other doctors were always professional - kind - attentive and responsive during times of need. If I was to rate the staff - it would be five stars. After relocating from NYC to Montana - we took our dog to a local veterinary office for a check-up. After an examination of our dog, the vet had informed us that the lump on his side was an aggressive mast-cell tumor. Six months ago, we took our dog to West Chelsea Vet (a location we've been taking our dog to for nearly three years). We voiced our concerns regarding the lump on his side - and we were told by Dr. Klein that the mass was most likely a fatty deposit and having it biopsied would be "costly and time consuming". We were then told that it would most likely subside after several weeks. Three months later, we asked the staff to have Dr. Klein call us regarding the lump and several other matters pertaining to medication during our move to Montana. We were later called by Dr. Klein and told that the lump "shouldn't grow any further." After moving to Montana, the vet at Shiloh Veterinary Hospital took a fatty tissue sample, analyzed it and diagnosed the mass within five minutes (for a total of $25). After the removal of the tumor, it was discovered that our dog had several other juvenile tumors in the same area as the one in question (four in total - which were removed). The vet has voiced her disbelief regarding Dr. Klein's misdiagnosis (especially due to the fact that had it been diagnosed earlier, it wouldn't have spread) - and we left feeling unsettled regarding our time with Dr. Klein. We're sorely disappointed in both the vet - and us not seeking a second opinion (but due to the vet costs in NYC, it's difficult to afford to see multiple doctors). Read Less

I've never had such a caring vet before. I took my fairly new kitty into the vet because of an upper respiratory infection and they took such great care of him! They talked to him kindly and kept complimenting how cute and good he is and seemed genuinely concerned about his welfare. The doctor was very thorough and had a knowledgeable diagnosis. They cut the price since I took him in as a stray and a receptionist cheerily offered to sit with him to keep him comfortable while I used the bathroom before leaving. After that they called to check on him multiple times and sent me a card in the mail wishing a speedy recovery and thanking us for coming in. I've never had such kind treatment for my animals. I didn't have a long relationship with this facility. I bought my cat Puma in to be euthanized due to the final effects of Stage 4 Renal Failure. He was 13 yrs old and we both fought long and hard to extend his life as long as we could. The staff and Vet were very kind and allowed me to have as much time that I needed before I said my final goodbye. Today I opened my mail box to find a sympathy card from the doctor and an ink print of Puma's paw. It made me cry. I remember massaging that little paw as we layed down watching TV. (He was a fan of Animal Planet and the TV sitcom BeWitched especially after I finally purchased a flat screen TV. At times Puma would attempt to chase the birds and hiss at the alligators. Lol.) I appreciate the care and sympathy WCV extended as I made such a difficult decision to let my Puma go in peace. Whenever I adopt another pet I would definitely bring my pet there for his/her medical care.Read Less

We have been going to West Chelsea vet since Dr Farber started on 10th Avenue. He and the practice doctored my cat Floyd in his last (18th) year. We adopted our cat Comet through West Chelsea/City Critters...we had Comet for 17 years, she was a "special needs" cat, having gone blind about halfway through her life. Again, we relied on West Chelsea for her care for her whole life. Comet died in December 2014, and in June 2015 we adopted Lily and Ginger from the West Chelsea cat condo. I went to West Chelsea for three years with my two cats. What a lucky chance that I got Dr Homan on my first visit. She is an incredibly smart, compassionate, caring vet who guided me through three years of roller coaster health issues with my two cats. I recently moved out of the area and one of the hardest things about moving was leaving Dr Homan behind! The front desk staff was also great - it felt comforting to have them recognize me and my pets when we came in, especially this June when my beloved cat died. And I have to say, the condolences and donation in memory of my cat were wonderful, generous gestures that made me feel that my vet and clinic truly cared for my cat and felt my loss. I had been with my vet for years who was wonderful, but after her last move, she hired a manager who was impossible to deal with and I, along with many other people left to find another practice. West Chelsea vet was recommended so I paid over $200. To get copies of my records for my all 3 of my cats and brought them to be copied when one of my cat's was seen the first time at West Chelsea. Prior to my recent 2nd visit with this vet, I had made several calls to coordinate my cat's visit because they has lost the two sets of records I left with them to copy. In addition, I had my own health issues and needed to coordinate my cat's visit since someone else was taking him. Every time I called I spoke with a different person and received a different instructions so it was difficult to coordinate this visit. We had a 9:00 am appointment with Dr. Mlekoday for my cat who needed to not only see him for his regular 6 month check up, (he has several health issues) but one of the soft paws they or the prior vet put on never came off and ended up digging into his pad. It is a big deal to bring him in because he needs to be sedated in order to be seen. In addition, I have two other cats and they all go nuts the night before because I have to remove all the food and water after midnight. My cat was pick up at 8:30 for what I thought was a 9:00 am appointment. I received a phone call around 9:30 asking me some questions was told that he wouldn't be sedated until 11:00. I guess a 9:00 appointment means with the doctor, not the cat. I called at 1:30 to see how he was doing and was told he wasn't seen yet. I asked them why he wasn't seen at 11:00 and didn't get a straight answer. All I was told was that he would be seen ""soon"". I then asked why didn't they call me about this change because this would mean I have to make new transportation arrangements. again, I was told, ""he will be seen soon"" I got upset since my cat has now not had anything to eat since midnight the night before and has now been in the small portable kennel since 8:15 am. I was upset and had to get off the phone quickly and find transportation at most likely an after hour price. So as I hung up the phone, I sad a ""4 letter word"". While frantically making calls, the doctor called me back to tell me that because I cursed at her staff (which wasn't true) she will not see my cat. I explained that I didn't curse at her staff member but at the situation and she still refused to see him. After all this, My poor cat did not get the medical attention he needed. I could go on and on about other things that happened that had red flags all over this place but I ignored them and paid the price. The point is this ""vet"" in not competent, compassionate or professional and moreover, does not have the best interest of your pet at hand and should not be practicing. Read Less

I could not be happier and more impressed with the treatment and experience I received from the entire staff at West Chelsea Veterinary. I had called them initially over the concern of declawing my 4-yr-old cat, an issue I myself was unsure of doing (ethically & financially, especially considering the relatively high costs of raising a pet on the East Coast). I had talked to several other renown places in Manhattan, and West Chelsea offered not only the best estimate economically (they itemized each part out and took careful time to explain it to me, including extra possible costs), but also seemed to understand taking each patient's procedures one step at a time, versus several questionable pricey tests done before evaluation. The pre-op appt with Dr. Maeda completely calmed my fears about the procedure-- I appreciated the spacious, calming & genuinely friendly environment the staff upheld for all people and their pets-- and the entire process really put me at ease. The personal enthusiasm the entire staff showed towards my cat really blew me away each time I visited or called, and the bonus part came upon payment of the bill when I actually owed about $400 less than initially estimated(!). Although I would have readily paid more to ensure the well-being of my beloved pet, I was incredibly appreciative of the honorable efforts at everyone at WCVH, and would recommend them to anyone seeking a helpful, knowledgeable and honest sanctuary for their pet at any time. WCVH has cared for my two puppies since we rescued them from a shelter. We would never go anywhere else. The staff and doctors have been so kind and responsive and, most of all, proactive. We've never owned dogs before and are subsequently mildly panicky and uninformed about the puppies health. We had brought the puppies to other vets when they started showing problems and were told 'nothing was wrong'. When we went to the doctors at West Chelsea, they were thorough, professional and reassuring. They diagnosed and solved problems immediately and there was a marked difference in the puppies health. The doctors explained everything in great detail and have followed up many times to be sure both the puppies and the owners were comfortable. I have never been treated to a place that combines such professionalism and caring so well. Nor have I met a group of people that cared about my pets as much as I do. Read Less

I was so glad to be able to take her here and not the hospital on the east side. She was so sick that I just wanted to take her to the closest full service vet and Bid-a-wee and the hospital was just to far. Dr. Farber was terrific with her. He diagnosed her quickly and immediately set her up for the surgery. The surgery was extensive but went well and the staff has been terrific. And I received phone calls twice a day with updates on her progress. We were encouraged to stop by to visit her everyday of her stay and hopefully she will be coming home today. We really miss her. Also, their billing department was very sensitive and understanding. Nice to know that every department within this practice puts the well being of your pet first. Also, their hours are terrific. I had been going to Bid-a-wee for my pets exams and shots but will now make West Chelsea our new primary vet. Thank you West Chelsea, your doctors and staff. Thank you for saving our girl!! I switched my cat to West Chelsea after a negative experience with another neighborhood vet, and I couldn't be happier that I did. Dr. Halligan and Dr. Mlekoday are fantastic, and the staff and techs can't be beat. Some of my favorite points: 1. They never rush through exams, and always take the time to answer questions. 2. They also call promptly with test results and will spend as much time as you need on the phone to talk them through and understand them. 3. They're extremely compassionate. 4. They always have taken the time to discuss what course of action would be best for MY particular cat, and have focused on his best interests and quality of life above all else. 5. They've never tried to sell products or services--when they've recommended treatment for my cat, I've always known it was because it was the best option, not because they wanted to make money. 6. They always return phone calls quickly if you contact them with a concern about your pet. 7. If your pet has an emergency, they WILL get him into the schedule and take care of him. I'd really recommend West Chelsea without reservation. They're the best. I wish doctors for people were this good! Read Less

Dr. Burdon has a genuine love and passion for animals as evidenced by her actions. When I called a few days later with more questions, she called me back within a few hours. My experience with West Chelsea was truly 5 star from the reception desk, veterinary assistants to the doctors. We have seen Dr. Cohen (housecalls only) as well and he was just as great. I took my cat to be groomed and they sedated her without telling me. They apologized but still charged for the sedation. I took my cat for a sick visit at which time bloodwork was done and turned out to be ""perfect."" Three weeks later she went in for her annual exam and they did bloodwork again that was completely unneccessary. Now they want $475 for a basic teeth cleaning (not including extractions) for a cat that has never had problems with her teeth and lets me brush her teeth at home with a little toothbrush. Read Less

Our 1 year old MalShi which has never had any major health issues to date got sick over the weekend and we called and got in to see these folks on monday morning. They were very helpful from the beginning with getting an appointment asap and were just asked to bring his vaccination record.Check in was easy, nice spacious waiting area and not much waiting.Saw Dr. Canales and Jessica who were very knowledgeable, helpful and great with our puppy. Their cost was reasonable and while they discussed options available for us if the current treatment did not work, they did not try to upsell us with treatments or medications like most other vets. Will definitely come back here and location is very central near subways, penn station. And just to be clear, we are not getting paid or compensated for this review in any way. My original vet wasn't able to provide the type of solution that I agreed with. I went to West Chelsea Vet and met with Dr.Hyla Gayer who truly turned my dog life around. Although not 100% he is able to walk short distances with less pain. She prescribed him medication, supplements and prescribed dog food that truly is improving his life.

Read Less

The staff and Vet were very kind and allowed me to have as much time that I needed before I said my final goodbye.

Read Less

My first visit to West Chelsea vet was for an emergency this week as we found out my cat ate a sewing needle and needed emergency surgery. Read Less

I have to start off by saying that I'm a completely neurotic pet-owner. I have 2 dogs (1 Yorkie & 1 Maltese) that are very tiny and sometimes causes me to be over-protective! My Yorkie and I went in to see Dr. Burdon for a simple case of stomach virus. Dr. Burdon took her time examining Bailey, was extremely gentle and patiently answered all of my questions. Oh yes, and lets not forget about price... I was expecting to spend a minimum of $250- Imagine my surprise when the bill came to only $100 for the visit and the meds! Read Less

I expect to pay more in New York City as rents are higher but these prices are outrageous. I have had pets all my life and have never been charged so much for so little care. Sounds like a cat that need to be sedated for a bath, right? Read Less
