West Village Veterinary Hospital

New York, New York
General Info
The West Village Veterinary Hospital (WVVH) opened in 1979 offering veterinary care, animal surgery, cat and dog vaccines, general pet health, and dental care to pet owners in the West Village, Greenwich Village, Meatpacking and Chelsea neighborhoods. After nearly 30 extraordinary years at our original NYC location on Washington Street, we moved the animal hospital to a much larger facility in the summer of 2008. Our location on Eighth Avenue allows us to serve the neighborhood’s pet health needs in a modern facility where you will continue to find a warm, friendly, neighborhood welcome.

Dr. Jill Elliott is an extraordinary vet, and I am forever grateful for her help with my dog! Two weeks ago, my 9.5 year old dog Comet was admitted in an ER in NJ with what seemed like a herniated disc. I was told he needed immediate surgery, which I could not afford, and that he would most likely never walk again on his own. He came home from a 3-day stay at the hospital drugged up, unable to move, having lost control of his legs, and leaking pee/poop non-stop. He was in such bad shape I thought we would have to say goodbye. But just one visit with Dr. Elliott (which involved two laser and one chiropractic treatments) changed everything! Comet regained control of his bowels on day 1. He began moving on day 2. He started eating again on day 3. He regained control of his urination on day 4. He walked with help on day 5. On day 8, we did a second series of treatments, and my dog walked out of the vet clinic on his four paws, without me supporting his back! On day 9, he was able to start trotting and tried running. Comet feels so good he "smiles" all the time! Dr. Elliott saved my beloved pet. Quickly. Painlessly. And in a very caring way. And at an affordable price. I cannot thank you enough, Dr. Elliott, for what you did for Comet! Read Less

Truly caring, compassionate and helpful veterinarians, assistants and desk staff. My pets have been under their care for many years. My only quibble is the turnover among the veterinarians. There was just one veterinarian I saw twice before she moved on. The others just once. Nonetheless I wouldn't think of taking my pets anywhere else. UPDATE: A happy client of WVVH recently referred me to Dr. Hildenbrand re. problems with my elderly cat. I am so pleased with this veterinarian--her knowledge, her careful diagnosis, her follow up, her bedside manner with kitty and parent. I so hope she stays with this practice. Read Less

Dr. Hildenbrand is such a great doctor. Actually every Dr and nurse we've seen have all been amazing to my cat Leon. Hospital is clean and the staff are very friendly. Luckily we have Nationwide pet insurance so cost isn't a major factor. But with that aside, the vets have all been great and never once recommended anything unnecessary. Though I believe that the veterinarians have the best intentions, I was not a fan of being charged for a second consultation for an issue that was overlooked on our first visit. On our first visit, an ear issue was not paid close attention to and over two days the issue got worse. I called to see the vet, but she was not available so they scheduled me with a different vet. She did not do a scrape of the ears because she was afraid of my dog's ears bleeding, which is understandable, but I think we could have found out a little more with a minor scraping. When I left to pay for our second visit, I was charged the full consultation fee plus the meds. In two days, I paid $300 to see two different vets and to get the medication. Fast forward to me getting my dog groomed a week later (ear issue still not resolved) and the groomer took off the scabs. No bleeding. Dog's ear issues are resolving. I should have told the young lady at the desk not to charge me for my second visit since it was overlooked on the first visit, but I was in a hurry and I did not want to argue. I really did not appreciate being double charged for an issue that should have been addressed on our first visit. The first vet seemed to be in a hurry to go on vacation and kept calling my dog a she when he is male. I am all about attention to detail and while the facility is very clean, and I think that the vets do care genuinely care for animals, I am on the fence about whether I would take my dog back. Also, one of the young women behind the desk told me that my dog's blood work came back negative, however we did not have blood work done. I informed the woman that we did not have blood work done and she repeated the results to me. I then told her again that we did not have blood work done and she then realized that she was talking to the wrong pet owner. She seemed unfazed by the fact that she was divulging information to the wrong clients. She also thought that Spain was part of the UK, but that's a whole other story. Overall, unfortunately, I don't think that we had the best experience. I really wanted this to be our NYC veterinary care facility, but I think we will have to go elsewhere, especially if we are being charged double for issues that should have been addressed in the first visit. We took our Chihuahua to WVVH for over 16 years for his regular care and we were always happy. Once, the vet & staff arranged for a car service to Riverdale and for a colleague (a vet neurologist) to look at the dog on his way home from work. (There was no other vet neurologist in town--holiday weekend.) Over the past two years, WVVH helped care for him as he suffered from kidney disease. We wanted to keep him as long as his quality of life was good. Dr. Martel was our regular vet, and he always gave us complete information about possible treatment and outcomes, at times called in a nutrition specialist from a veterinary school, and even arranged for a staff member to walk him and give him his medicine when we were away for a weekend. There was no real formula for treating his condition, so it was touch and go at times--Dr. Martel was great: responsive, expert, sympathetic, honest and not patronizing. The other vets also knew their stuff and seemed to really care about the dog. And the staff was just as good. They knew how to handle whatever they needed to do, like telling us how to give meds, schedule an appointment, etc. Finally, when it was time to let go, Dr. Martel and an assistant came and euthanized our dog. We were wrecks, but they were professional and the dog died a peaceful and painless death. I cannot recommend WVVH highly enough. Read Less

I moved to chelsea so figured i would look for a vet close by and gave this place a try. I have an older dog who has pretty bad teeth and she got an infection.. so went to get it checked. The vet was UNABLE to open my pet's mouth and take a proper look at her teeth.. (sure my dog freaks out but other vets were confident enough to open an 12lbs dogs mouth). Instead she pointed out age related ""problems"" my old dog had that i was entirely aware off. She guilted me into doing unnecessary test which (i knew!) would turn out all fine. (at costs of about $500). On the date of her proper cleaning she gave me yet another call telling me that my dog has odd (small) growths on her mammary glands. I pointed out that this has been tested before and turned out to be nothing. Again she guilted me into doing this operation. I figured it would be a small incision and not a big deal - but it ended up being 7 inches long. my dog was in severe pain. oh yeh and guess what.. the teeth were still not cleaned, the tests turned out negative (exactly as i suspected), and i just waisted yet another $1200 on nothing. long story short. this vet clinic looks nice bc they suck every possible penny out of you - not considering your dogs well being. I am still very angry about all the tests, operations and unnecessary vaccinations. My dog is old and fragile - everything should be considered for her benefit and not for the $$ Read Less

I'm a physician myself and I have to say I am *very* impressed with the professionals at WVV. The doctors there are young (but not green) and as such are up to date on the newer treatments that are available. They seem to have a good medical record system because every vet seems to very knowledgeable about prior treatments. I think having several doctors working together helps keep them all on their toes, as they frequently confer about animals (such as my cat). Also, they call your cell phone, answer emails, and are liberal with samples and extra medications. I really like these guys. Dr. Quagliata and Dr. Berk are especially excellent. Read Less

I just went in to speak with a vet about transferring my very sick dog from the Animal Hospital in Hells Kitchen to their new 8th ave facility. I asked the young girl behind the desk if I could speak with a vet and she asked what the problem was. I briefly explained my situation, assuming that would suffice in order to get face time with a vet. She asked me more questions and I very politely asked if I could please speak with a vet. She went into the back and came back moments later saying that what needs to happen is that they would need to review my dog's file, etc... Is this really the way you treat a prospective new patient?? I don't even get to meet a staff vet and ask some basic questions before considering transferring my dog into their care? There was no one waiting to be seen and I could overhear idle chat amongst the staff in the back- but not one staff doctor could find two minutes to meet with me. I'm disgusted by the treatment (or lack of) that I received from this place and I will be sure to let everyone in the area know about my experience. Read Less

I called the west village hospital for my beautiful Boxer Jacques... On a sunday they of course were closed, BUT! They had an alternate location in Tribeca. I called and they squeezed me in even though it was so busy. I was totally freaked out about my dog. He had stopped eating and and was hacking like a dinosaur. I had to wait a little bit, as it was so crammed with more desperate situations than mine, but I was put at total ease when I met Dr. Pattillo. She gave my baby the right medicine, his hacking stopped and he started sleeping soundly. Me too! She also gave me some great suggestions for clearing his lungs and how to generally make him (and me) feel more comfortable. I can't recomend her highly enough. We buy all of Leon's prescription food with them as well and he loves it! Thank you WVVH! Read Less

Read Less

I'm a huge animal lover and have brought my three pets to 2 other vets in the city. None of them compare to the trust that I have in the doctors & staff here. I've seen both Dr. O'Byrne and Dr. Berk and they are both great. I had to bring in my Fender Bender for a teeth cleaning and some dental work. I was scared about the anesthesia, but they made sure that he was ok to go under and took the time to answer all of my questions. Another time, my Boris was not feeling well and it was 9 at night. They were still open and took care of him immediately. 9pm at night! I was so happy that I was able to bring him to my own vet that late at night, instead of an emergency hospital.

She was direct, honest and warm, without freaking me out the way other Vet's have in the past. I'm hooked. Thanks Marion. Read Less
