I took my cat David here because I knew he was due for a checkup, and it also seemed like a good idea to have a vet in the area since we moved here 5 months ago. First of all, when I called to make an appointment, Charles was the most pleasant person to speak with. He welcomed me to the neighborhood and was very helpful in finding me an appointment that worked with my schedule. We went on 11:30am on a Saturday and didn't have to wait very long. We were first seen by Medina, the vet tech, who was just lovely and sweet. Dr. Angel came in shortly after and is the best! She sat right down on the ground with David since he was acting a bit shy. She gave me some tips for how to control his fast eating and diagnosed him with gingivitis. She is so professional, yet calm and relatable at the same time. When we left, Charles offered us delicious freshly baked cookies! The visit was a bit pricey, but in addition to the routine check up, David had his claws clipped and a vaccine, so we got a lot done for the money. Truly a pleasant experience! Read Less

I never give 5 stars.I've taken my two cats to Yorkville and was seen by Dr. Melzer  (treating a broken tail, and a senior cat wellness exam) and by Dr. Angel (treating second cat for weight loss, diagnosed as due to renal failure).  I've found both doctors to be thorough in examining my cats, explaining their findings and conclusions and discussing my options.  They both seemed to genuinely care about my cats' welfare and have been saintly in answering emails and phone messages--giving a lot of detail and answering questions, calling animal hospitals  and making referrals (all of which is non-billable time)-especially Dr. Angel ,who treated the more serious illness.  The front desk attendants have always been pleasant and good about forwarding information, although sometime the records were incomplete, and I've experienced occasions where appointments were not recorded or were not canceled.  Minor stuff. I'm writing this after one of the hardest days of my life. My husband and I had to make the difficult decision to put our beloved pupper, Toby, to sleep. I really have nothing but amazing things to say about Yorkville Animal Hospital. I moved to UES and we got a new puppy and were so worried as to where to take him when looking at reviews of other places. We were nervous of the prices here and made the mistake of taking him somewhere else. BIG mistake. It was a terrible experience. Then we called Yorkville. The receptionist was SO sweet on the phone (Ayianna) and talked me through what to expect at first visit (1 hour with Doctor and would talk about anything and everything). Then, when we went in person for the visit, the receptionist was Charles - also EXTREMELY sweet and just so accommodating. When we met Dr. Meltzer, we knew we had come to the right place. She is extremely caring and you can tell she loves what she does. She played with James on his first visit, told us everything to expect, and really educated us on all the vaccines he will need, etc. I know the reviews talk about the prices, and that might turn someone away but DON'T let it. Honestly - you get what you pay for. Yes - it may be a bit more expensive than other places (but hey, get pet insurance - it's worth it. Our insurance pays for 90%, we pay for 10%), but I promise you, you should not go any where else. They aren't pushy with services - they have an entire treatment plan they review with you where YOU decide what you want to proceed with. What really proved their worth is that we took James, our Frenchie, in today as he was sick all last night. They treated his symptoms and by the end of the day, we came home to an email from them CHECKING on him. They really are the best on the Upper East Side. Don't go anywhere else. You'll regret it :) Read Less

The receptionist was really cool, but that vet needs to go back outside and get that act right because that's NOT how you talk to people. Dr. Meltzer is simply extraordinary.  She has always gone above and beyond, not just providing the highest standard of care, but also tangible support to ensure that our pet has always had the best quality of life.  As long as she is seeing patients, our pet will be among them.We started visiting the (then) Yorkville Animal hospital during our years living across the street, but we've stayed with them through our move further uptown...and ultimately have come back to Dr. Meltzer even though we now live in Westchester.  Not to diminish the skill of our Westchester vets, when we noticed a suspicious lump on our beloved 13yr old Lhasa 3 years after moving out of the City, we immediately brought her back to see Dr. Meltzer--and boy, are we glad we did.  Dr. Meltzer is skilled, thorough, compassionate, detail-oriented and just plain kind.  Long story short, she saved our dog and we will always be grateful.  When we found the lump, we brought her in the next day.  Dr. Meltzer ran a number of tests (prioritizing the urgent ones) and promptly referred us to a specialist once she felt there was a chance of lymphoma.  She literally called as soon as each test result came back.  She listened, patiently educated, counselled and made us feel included and empowered.  After the referral, she continued to follow up repeatedly (including with a number of calls to offer support and help us understand our options as they came into focus).  She coordinated with the canine oncologist (who is an excellent referral, by the way) and helped us act swiftly to get our dog into the right treatment protocol.  Chemo is progressing well, and Dr. Meltzer continues to call and check on our pet and offer assistance, advice and support.  All signs point to Isabel making it to her 14th birthday and beyond--and Dr. Meltzer has the abiding gratitude of our whole family (including a 2 and a 5 year old, so especially glad we don't have to have "that" conversation yet...).  We've been very lucky (and Dr. Meltzer has contributed to this) to have had over 12 years of great health for our pet.  We thought we could manage without her once we left the City, but as soon as we felt that lump, we didn't hesitate to come home to our trusted vet, and of course, she didn't disappoint.  Even if we hadn't been so fortunate in the outcome, we would still be grateful that she has never left a stone unturned.  PS, the whole team at the One Love hospital is great--example?  We've carried pet insurance for years and were worried that they wouldn't actually deliver in a crisis--the team at One Love walked us through the paperwork and helped us get everything in order quickly and efficiently--and in time to have the costly chemo protocol preauthorized before her first treatment, which was a huge relief. I wish I could give more than five stars to Yorkville Animal Hospital. The staff at this place is extremely professional, kind, and caring. You can tell that everyone who works here loves what they do and they are very good at it. I brought my cat here many times and really enjoy talking with Julia and Chevonne (I apologize if I didn't spell it properly; she is the lady with freckles and always a bright smile) at the front desk.Yesterday, I unfortunately had to put my cat to sleep, and it was extremely painful for me. She was my first pet and I'd had her for a long time (over 13 years). Out of nowhere, she suddenly exhibited signs of a rapidly growing brain tumor, and it was so difficult for me to say goodbye. The staff guided me through the process, and they were very compassionate; they gave me as much time as I needed to say goodbye to her. Everyone at the clinic knew Kabuki and you could tell that she meant something to them. Chevonne even asked, "Is it okay if I say goodbye to her too? I always really liked her" and gave my cat a goodbye snuggle before it was her time to go. That was really special to me-- that she cared about my cat that much, and it really touched my heart. As an aside, my cat was once feral, so let us just say she was easy to fall in love with and hard to take care of. It meant a lot to me that the staff cared for her even if she could be a handful.I really like Dr. Schoen (and Dr. Meltzer is great too!) Dr. Schoen was very professional and paid very close attention to my cat when taking care of her. I was so devastated that at times I nervously cracked jokes to keep up my spirits, so when Dr. Schoen explained the process of how we would say goodbye and asked if I wanted the cat's ashes, I joked, "Perhaps I will get taxidermy and keep her on the shelf with my action figures" and she just smiled and said, "Well, that is something that patients occasionally choose for their pets" because I don't think she knew I was joking. Dr. Schoen, if you read this, please know that I was totally kidding; that would be weird. :)I decided to stay in the room when she had to be put to sleep. Dr. Schoen was very soothing, giving my cat gentle pets until she was finally gone. This to me speaks of a vet that not only knows how to do a good job, but really cared about doing things in a humane way.I miss Kabuki so much and have spent most of the day crying, but I could not have asked for a better facility and staff to have said goodbye to her. I am so thankful for Yorkville Animal Hospital and everything they do for their patients. I have seen a lot of comments here about the prices, but as they say, you get what you pay for and Yorkville is worth the extra price for a very high-quality of care. Read Less

I had several disappointing experiences at this vet and finally decided to not return to them. First off, their prices are exorbitant compared to other vets. They are now charging double the price for many routine procedures and tests. It seems that it has become all about making money at this practice. Second and most important, I do not like the demeanor of the staff here, particularly Dr. Michelle Meltzer, who can be abrupt and cold with the human owners of her patients. I tried to let it go and chalk it up to her being busy, but she was condescending to me enough times and also tried to make us sign up for additional tests that my dog did not need - again to my point that they are highly focused on the bottom line. I do like Dr. Schoen a lot - she is kind and attentive, but I can't justify spending double here on everything or being treated without respect like I was by Dr. Meltzer. There are a lot of great vets in NYC, so I would encourage any pet owner to take a look at other alternatives than Yorkville Animal. Read Less

I took my puppy here several times last year and now I have a different Vet which I love. It was my first puppy so I didn't know any better but now that I go to different Vet I can see clearly how awful this place is.I honestly think this place's priority is getting as much money as they can out of pet owners. I never got solutions but only paid for what never worked. I was only coming back to pay for unnecessary stuff. The ONLY thing nice about this place is the receptionist who's really friendly and nice, if she still works there. My puppy was having a really bad diarrhea for over a week so I got really worried and took her to this place. They asked basic information ( age, food, weight, etc...) and maybe took like 10 minutes to examine her and explained to us what's going on (They need to be better about using layman's term. If it wasn't for my husband who's about to graduate med school, I would have no idea what they're saying. And even my husband told me this doctor, female doctor who I don't remember the name, sounded very condescending. She was like "Wait, you don't know this? this is very common disease in dog" well, he's a doctor for human not for animals.)  and gave her antibiotics. The antibiotics didn't help at all so I started to research myself and gave her rice instead of her food to soothe her stomach and diarrhea problem was solved the next day. I don't understand why they couldn't suggest changing her diet before giving her any medicine. it's less expensive and more basic. but they are the doctors not me so I was like maybe that's how they do it. So after that, I changed her food to more expensive and higher rating food and her diarrhea didn't continue so that was that. And then, my puppy started to lose hair on the tip of her ears and behind her ears. She was itching like crazy so I took her to this place again. They, again, asked basic infos and spent 10minutes to examine her and told me there's a high chance that it could be ringworm. They took her poo to send to the lab for a test and couple days later it came back negative. So they gave her antibiotics. But it was just getting worse.I got really frustrated and went to another Vet and new doctor almost spent about more than an hour to get the most information out of us and to explain all the possibilities and treatments. He was super patient and kind, answered millions of questions. He told me that how the other Vet went straight to the conclusion of ringworm was strange. He thought it was either food or Atopic dermatitis so he gave her a anti-itch shot and suggested hypoallergenic food. He also explained that it takes about 6-8 weeks to see the result of new food. so until then we can continue getting anti-itch shot monthly. It's been 3 months since we switched her food and we stopped the anti-itch shot and her hair grew back perfectly and no more scratching like crazy! This new doctor followed up with us as needed and always spent long enough time to really communicate with us. Also if we needed medical stuff he would tell us where to get so we don't have to spend more at the Vet (usually buying online is much much cheaper) - That never happened at Yorkville animal hospital, they were always very pushy about selling stuff like ear cleanser, tic prevention and such. From the bottom of my heart I cannot thank these guys enough for helping my kitten pull through a life-threatening phase of illness. From babyhood to adulthood, Dr Schoen has been available by phone and in person to look after our wee Elton. Yes, the clinic is clean, friendly, and professional...the same could be said of all top vets... but what sets these doctors apart is the attention that they give to their patients: when I've passed Elton into their care I haven't had the usual anxiety that he might end up neglected and in a crate. After tests at the clinic, Elton is brought back to me chirpy and unphased. Having had far to much experience at vet clinics in the uk whilst caring for a young FIV+ cat I had lost confidence in finding a vet doc who cared and wasn't simply wiped out by the pressure of work. Animals cannot talk for themselves, so I have to do my best to express Elton's thanks (i.e. wax lyrical online). I write this review after a years experience with Yorkville. I'm moving back to my hometown (London, UK) at the end of the month, and I'll consider myself very lucky if I can find a vet doctor half as good. If you love your pet, be confident that they are in great hands with this team. As a small neighbourhood business, this is a gem. Give them your support and they will give your pets health and happiness. Read Less

My rescue sheltie, Ginobili, has been a frequent patient at Yorkville for the last two years. He is the light of my life, but he is a little bit high maintenance in the health department. My husband and I travel frequently and our preferred boarding facility requires bordetella vaccines every six months, so between my dog's proclivity for developing little medical issues (like a stubborn infection in his derrière, thankfully resolved now with lots of tlc from Yorkville animal hospital) and the bordetella, we are here a lot. I have to say I love Dr. Schoen! She clearly cares deeply for her animal patients and wants them to be healthy and happy. She is great at explaining to me what she thinks is going on and describing possible treatments. I really appreciate that she always provides a printed out estimate that shows line by line how much each item recommended costs so there's no sticker shock at the cash register. I think vets have a duty to show you the ideal/textbook treatment plan, but Dr. Schoen respects that we don't live in an ideal world where everyone has tons of extra money lying around for pet healthcare. From this list you can have a conversation with the vet to determine what's necessary today and if anything could be a "wait and see" item, like if the dog isn't better by next week from this lower cost treatment, let's do the more expensive treatment next week. I find that this estimate is not overdone at all--I have never had anything presented to me that I thought was excessive or completely unnecessary. Dr. Schoen understands that we love our fur babies and we try to provide the best care we can afford, but that is different from person to person. Also, I have never ever been up sold on anything like baths or chews or vitamins. Absolutely nothing. My dog has been on a certain brand of heartworm preventative that they don't stock, and they send in his prescription to an online retailer that sells if for cheaper than they could get if they ordered it for me themselves. I really appreciate that effort to help save me a few dollars. In my many visits, I've only had a long wait once. I'm always able to get an appointment the same week (if only it were so easy to get into my own doctor when I'm sick!), and the vet techs always remember my dog and a few of his little personality quirks. The techs are very sweet to him. I'm glad I have somewhere I trust to take my little guy when he's feeling not his best. Read Less

New to NYC and because of good reviews and closeness to my apartment thought I would take my pup there for his annual shots. Really great service. Prices are a bit high but that could just be from me not being used to NYC pricing yet. Vet visit fee was half the price in Dallas.I like that theybare open weekends. Made it convenient to get an appointment. Very friendly team there.I wish they had the cards they gave you with shot info. My vet in Orlando did that and it was great especially when you have a dog that needs grooming. The card is credit card soze with a picture of your dog, the date of all his shots, the date the shots expire and the vet contact info. Made things really simple. No complaints though. Just wanted to sing the praises of Yorkville Animal Hospital and its entire staff --- especially Dr. Meltzer who was absolutely amazing in both her care and affection for our 15 year old basset hound.  She honestly went out of her way on several occasions to make sure everything was going well when he got sick the last year of his life.   And when we had to make the final decision to put him to sleep due to cancer (at the Animal Medical Center, rather than at Yorkville Animal Hospital since AMC has an oncology department), it was nevertheless Dr. Meltzer who called us, unsolicited, to let us know we were making the right decision. (we had kept Yorkville advised of the progress since they were our primary care vet)Dr. Meltzer really didn't have to reach out to us since our dog wasn't even under her care at the time .... it is just the type of person she is and it meant so much to my girlfriend and me.I've read Renee C.'s review of Yorkville and the Dr. Meltzer and Dr. Higgins she is describing sound like bizzaro universe versions of the doctors I've met.   I have no idea what happened in Renee's case.... but her experience is completely opposite to anything I have ever seen or heard of ever happening at Yorkville.  It definitely has not been my experience.I would highly recommend Yorkville, and especially Dr. Meltzer, when looking for someone to take care of your pet.  We would never trust anyone else. These are awful people. I had been taking my dog to them for seveal years but had real problems with Dr. Melzer's terrible attitude. Dr. Higgins suggested he take over my case. I didn't feel right, but agreed and we continued going there. My dog has been declining recently (she's 16) and yesterday i took her in telling him that i thought it was time to put her to sleep. she seemed in pain, was dioriented, hadn't eaten in days, etc. etc. She's been there recetnly for blood tests, had a history of urine crystals, so we were anticipating kidney failure at some point. Anyway, he recommended we run more tests($$$) and wait a day. In the afternoon, i went out and left my daughter with the dog. she called to tell me the dog was getting worse... she wasn't walking at all and was howling. i immediately called dr. higgins who said it was separation anxiety. i told him i didn't think so.... she needed to be let go. i asked for painkillers at least and he gave me tranquilizes for her. it continue to ge worse. i called again and told him the dog looked dead. she was making groaning noises and her head kept falling back.. it was pathetic. He said let her go in her sleep and that these were "sleep" noises, that she wasn't in pain... just scared. i told him i disagreed, but followed his advice. Cllose to 6pm,, i called the office again becaue it was unberaerable.. it was so sad and now the dog was screamng (if a dog can scream). Higgins was gone so meltzer got on the phone. she said she could hear the dog and thought it was proabably best to put her to sleep, but since no one had asked her, it wasn't her fault and she was going home so the dog jsut had to wait until 9am the next day. She said technician had gone home and she couldn't inject the dog by herself. (really?) i was so upset... i immediately took the dog to the aspca where they took one look at her and immediately recommended euthanasia. they said she looked like she'd been convulsing all afternoon and that's what the howling and screaming were. She deserved a better death than from these people... STay away Read Less

Read Less

I have taken several of my animals to Yorkville Animal hospital.  All the Vets are very knowledgeable, caring and compassionate.  My dog had a lot of eye infections that other vets just continued to treat with intermittent antibiotics.  It wasn't until I took him to Yorkville where he was diagnosed with an eye condition.  With the correct treatment - a simple medication, he has not had any further eye problems.  They are also very responsive to emails and answer all questions/concerns in a timely manner. i highly recommend this place! I've had good and bad experiences here. Last week we went to have puppy exams, the vet was just too lazy to fill out individual exam cards. We left with our 14 puppies not checked. I had an appointment in the last minute .they were the only ones available. The reception girl was very nice and kind and got me in .I came just for check up since I've got the puppy one day before in pet shop( I took it on a check because I have a baby at home) he seems to us very healthy and playful but yet they wanted to check everything.so the doctor said he have a fever, the shot he got is not on schedule ,it is  Coughing, and more and more bad things..then I've got the bill-640$Again I have to mention the puppy seems totally happy in the past 24 hours .The doctor ask me to sign up that I'm agree with the bill and that she can go ahead and do all the check ups to charge me.once I said we just got the puppy and I have to check first with the pet store what's going on, the doctor went out and told me; I just want to make sure you understand that the puppy  is in  LIFE THREATENING!! And because we are fully booked today I won't be able to get you guys again today!!I walked out and went on  other opinion  at the same day.its been 3 weeks since then and our puppy is totally healthy playful dog!!
