With more than 50 years of combined experience caring for animals, Paumanok provides a warm, friendly environment where you will be able to relax while you and your pets are treated with skill, respect, and dignity.
We are passionate about developing a comprehensive and cooperative plan that encourages you to work with Paumanok as a team to help your pet to live a long and happy life. Whether this is a first visit for vaccinations, routine surgery such as spay or neuter, or something much more serious, maybe even life threatening, we will be with you, helping you to help your family pet — and helping you to make both the simple and difficult decisions. Our goal is to foster a trusting and lifelong relationship.
The word “paumanok” is a Native American word for Long Island and means “island in the shape of a fish.” Our roots are from Long Island. We want to be part of the community, and our involvement with our community is diverse and wide, from helping young people to become more aware of careers in the veterinary medicine field to raising awareness of environmental issues. We sponsor several fundraisers over the course of the year.
We look forward to seeing you and your pet soon!

Well, I finally want to report my experience since it has been bugging me for years. I picked up a dumped cat at work that looked skinny and had bite marks, took it to Paumanok to get vetted and fixed. Date was around 12-12-2011. After bloodsamples it was discovered he was feline leukemia positiv. At the time I had at least 6 other cats. They told me best thing would be to put him down. I refused as I just rescued him. Then they told me I had to keep him separate from the others and he would not live past 2 years. I had him vetted and fixed ( I remember it was not cheap). I kept him separate for almost a year. I felt sorry for him as he is a sweetheart. I did some extensive research and discovered that cats can live with this disease for a long time. It depends on various other things. So, I took him out of isolation. In 2011 he was around one year old. It is now 2018! He is one of the most loving, sweetest cats we have! AND STILL ALIVE! They wanted me to put him down! They should know about their profession! How many cats have been put down that could have lived a good life? I wanted to bring Jingles back to them to show them, but we are in Canada now. Dont believe Vets, do some research, get a second opinion! I spent many thousands when I could not afford it because I was given false hope. There are some good vets out there, but its hit and miss. I would give this place 0 stars if it was possible. Dr. Maggie was a decent vet but her treatments did nothing for my dog. She handed us over to Dr Hensen who gave my terminally ill dog vaccinations... she passed away shortly after. He constantly made me purchase products that were unnecessary and would sit there talking me into purchasing it (Dr Maggie never did this). I’ve spent tons of money on products i never actually gave my dog. He was aware I didn’t want to purchase and kept talking me into buying things so that my bill would be at least 500$ every visit, which was very frequent since my dog was very ill. Read Less

I recently wanted to bring my baby bird in just to have her legband removed because it was too tight and causing her discomfort...they told me it was 67.00 to walk thru the door and more $ to cut the band off....no payment plan unless it was over $300.00 ...now that I know better, they charged me 400.00 for an office visit and blood panel for my cat....blood panel costs less than half that...rip offs don’t care about the animal or the owner...just the$$$...by the way, the legband was removed by parrots of the world for 12.00 and he clipped her nails to boot....I will never go back here Read Less

I was shown nothong but compassion and kindness. Dr Nicolle Desnoyers gets 5 stars from me. Ended up at this clinic from a Google search on vets open late I was upcharge of for an emergency visit but it was worth every penny. I'm very picky with my vets and I'm very hard to please but you would never guess that after leaving this amazing hospital. I've been breeding and showing American bullies for over 9 years and been to my fair share of vets. But this place totally got a new client with me. The friendly staff are happy and it's obvious they love there job. Thanks for staying open late and helping my week old Spartacus! Read Less

On a Sunday afternoon, I noticed my 6 yr old cat was running to his little over and over with hardly a tinkle of urine in his box. I got worried fast when I looked up the signs of a bladder infection etc..They took my cat in within a half hour and even allowed me to borrow a crate to take him home in. I spent $125 and it included the visit, a n/c sonogram and two supplements—one for inflammation and the other to coat the bladder. I had decided against an antibiotic because there wasn’t enough urine in his bladder to test and the Dr didn’t push it at all. Writing this review to give a non biased opinion of this practice. I've been taking my pet to Paumanok for eight years now and have had nothing but excellent service. The staff and the vets are all compassionate and understanding when dealing with my dog who's had some issues over the years. I see that the negative reviews on this board mainly concern cost and poor treatment. All I can say is that my experience has been positive in every way. Both Dr Dave and Dr Dee are highly skilled professionals and show compassion and understanding for your pets wellbeing. I've witnessed friends and neighbors over the years spend huge sums of money on pet care when they get sick, but good care costs money. I've also seen people who have let their pets get enormously overweight which is animal cruelty at its worst! I've also seen people who neglect their pets health until they get sick and then expect the vet to perform wonders. I have recommended people to this practice over the years and everyone has been happy with the care and professionalism they show. Read Less

This hospital does not care about exotics. Pet Owners Beware!! Allow me to tell you the whole story and why this hospitals might kill your pet.. I took my guinea pig Pixie to this hospital on April 28th for a checkup with Dr. Maggie Camilleri. Pixie has a history of upper respiratory infections. However, Pixie apparently passed with excellence. On May 15th Pixie started to display odd behavior; roughed up coat, suddenly not wanting to be petted and had a hunched posture. I immediately called the Paumanok animal hospital around 10:30am the next day (Tuesday) looking for advice, guidance..anything. A woman with a very raspy voice and a slight attitude answered the phone. Frantic and concerned I explained the symptoms to her, but she cut me off, not wanting to hear my concerns. She didn't care enough to listen. All she said was "I'll pull Pixies file and the vet will call you." She didn't bother to write anything down. I waited for the vet all day, no call. The next day came, Pixies symptoms worsened, still no call. On May 18th a Thursday, Pixie had to be rushed to a nearby animal hospital and was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection which is potentially fatal. It's now Tuesday May 23, still no call.. Pixie is doing OK, she was prescribed antibiotics and is a fighter. Their slogan on their website - "We're a small hospital that's big on giving" is a lie. The vet didn't care enough to call me back, the raspy voiced receptionist didn't give me the time of day to listen. Because of their lack of care for a guinea pig, Pixie could have died. Perhaps in their eyes Pixie is just a guinea pig, not as important as a dog or cat. Well guess what Paumanok animal hospital, I care. I warn all those with exotics and those who love their pets. Stay away from this hospital because they just don't care and your beloved pet can die waiting for a call back Read Less

From the minute I called to book our first visit, i was pleased. The hours were so accomodating to my full time work schedule, and the woman i spoke with with was upbeat and friendly. We came in today as new clients and the staff were all so friendly with us and our new Brittany Spaniel, Lucy! The doctors took the time to teach us how to maintain her appropriately, and answered all our questions. They had some tips on how to help us train our new pup, I didn't feel rushed, and we were able to set up our future appointments to accommodate our work schedules. I'm so glad we found such a great Vet! The girls at the desk were friendly, and the office even has some children's toys to entertain my toddler while we spoke with the Vet! I'm excited to try out the training classes! 5 stars!! Job well done! Read Less

PLEASE READ: This is an honest review written to help others who deeply love their pet and are looking for a veterinary to take their pet to. I write this review with the utmost sincerity & I hope that those who find their way to read this review will go to another vet that will truly do what is right for their pet and their family. If you are looking for a veterinarian who is truly compassionate for their pet patients & their owners then DO NOT go to Dr. Dave or his wife at Paumanok Veterinary Hospital. ( 1.) Dr. Dave played on our family's love for our beloved dog that ending up passing away a couple of months after over $7,000 of surgeries. Each of the several surgeries our dog went through in just a month or so of time were between $900-$1600 each, & Dr. Dave played on our emotions heavily as he advised us to have our dog undergo each of these surgeries since he stated that there was a good "chance". Obviously we dearly loved our dog & wanted to take any "chance" we could so we listened to what we thought was professional, sound advice. ( 2.) Like another reviewer suggested in other words, Dr. Dave is extremely incompetent. He first stated that my 14 year old dog "ate some wood pieces outside". First off, my dog has never in her 14 years alive done such a thing. Secondly, when we leash walked her outside, we always monitored all of her actions-she did not eat anything outside ever, especially not "wood". Moreover, Dr. Dave then came out with another fraudulent story telling us that our dog had a bacterial infection from an unknown cause and that if he immediately operated then there was a very good chance that he could remove it. Dr. Dave again played to the occasion, adding that he himself would move forward with the surgery if it were own his dog. Dr. Dave had another story for every aliment that came up after every surgery. After her third surgery, an unusual 1-inch wound like hole appeared on my dog's back. Dr. Dave said that it was the bacteria eating away; then the next follow-up visit, another doctor in the office told us that this was the cause of the medication that Dr. Dave was giving us for our dog. Finally, Dr. Dave told us that he really did not know what was going on with her & that she was just an old dog that was dying & he advised us to put her to sleep...Of course even after over $7,000 of consecutive surgeries, Dr. Dave needed to squeeze out every last penny from us & he even charged us the lousy one-hundred dollars to put our poor dog to sleep before the procedure took place that awful afternoon. ( 3.) Furthermore, like another reviewer stated elsewhere, Dr. Dave will "casually" ask you about your work/what exactly you do for a living. He wants to calculate how much you're worth before he plays on your emotions to squeeze every dollar out of you. Typically this question is part of casual, small talk, however it is NOT appropriate small talk/conversation when our dog is lying on a table dying, half-conscious with our entire family looking on in the room while in tears. Completely INAPPROPRIATE, unprofessional, & just outright very unusual. I know that Dr. Dave played on our family's emotions and he also understood that our family ran a family business, so he figured that he saw another ($$$) opportunity to take advantage of us. (4.) In closing, please avoid this veterinary practice if you want what's best for your pet and yourself. Dr. Dave is not only unprofessional, and apathetic to your pet's health, but his level of veterinarian training and knowledge are LACKING (his diagnosis' are constantly changing, his opinions change and are inaccurate if you talk other vets, etc.). Perhaps Dr. Dave has now changed his business model to keeping patients over a course of several years and will slowly take advantage of them, contrary to his old business model of taking advantage of families in such a short time frame. There are other words I would like to share on here for a man to be so heartless as to take advantage of my family during such an awful time but I will refrain... Read Less

What you did to my cats, Sparrow and Elvis is disgusting. Not returning them in their carriers and collars after they medically boarded ( which we paid in full for) when they were picked up by a volunteer from the rescue place we got them from who were temporarily caring for them. You didn't even bother to call us to say hey we have your collars and carriers and let us find out that you had then when we picked up our cats from the rescue place. Your vet suggested we not take these cats back or that the rescue place not give them back to us due to their special needs. To make suggestion is one thing but to assume it by not putting them in their carriers with their collars & tags and not calling us is disgusting. You should be ashamed of yourselves. When we call to ask for sparrows purple collar & tag with her name your staff has the nerve to say if was left over 30 days and not responsible for it but actually it was you who didn't give the cats their belongings. Who are you to assume that I wasn't taking them home. I paid you to medically board them to get them well so they could come move into our new home well but you couldn't offer any further help so the rescue place helped us get them better. By the way they suggested rx food and they are doing well and they are our part of our family and we love them. We would also like an apology and sparrows collar and tag back as it is sentimental to me when I first got her. Her tag is purple with a heart, her name and my name & phone number on it.Read Less

We are passionate about developing a comprehensive and cooperative plan that encourages you to work with Paumanok as a team to help your pet to live a long and happy life.

Read Less

I love this hospital! I have been to several veterinarians on Long Island through many of my different pets’ lives and Paumanok is the most personal. I love that I can bring in my guinea pigs, cats and dog all into the same facility and I always see the same doctor. They are very accommodating with their hours and the doctors always call back within a reasonable amount of time. Both doctors do a wonderful job of listening to descriptions of problems, I never feel belittled. And when they are describing whatever the issue is I always understand, they answer every question, no matter how silly. I also like how the staff is like a family and work well together. I recommend this place to everyone I know! Read Less
