Just a fair warning to anyone that takes their beloved pets to Phelps Veterinary Hospital: don't go to have your pet put to sleep. It's not sleep, it's pure hell. When we took our dog there, it was anything but peaceful.
The techs came in to give her a tranquilizer, and I explained that she had arthritis, and to please not put the (very large) needle into her back leg, as that was her most sensitive area, and wouldn't let anyone touch her there without being in pain. They briefly felt around for another place to put the needle, but they seemed not to want to go through the effort, and told me that her back leg was the only place they could put it. When they gave her the shot she cried out in pain and leapt forward. They had to hold her down while they continued to inject her.
After that, our dog started to have convulsions. I was crying and very upset, and asked the doctor why this was happening. His response was that one out of a hundred dogs and cats have that reaction, and that if it was going to bother me, I should probably leave, since he couldn't guarantee it wouldn't happen again. At this point, I was crying and so upset that I couldn't watch anymore.
There is no way I can explain the terrible guilt I feel. No pet owner should take their pets to this vet. I feel so much sorrow for doing this to my dog. She was the sweetest, most loyal dog; I keep having flashbacks to that moment over and over again. I don't think I'll ever be able to forgive myself for allowing this to happen. I only hope that if you use this vet, you know the possibilities of what can happen, and go in prepared. Read Less
