Horrible service, overpriced and payment in full required before service is even rendered! Brought my dog in for breathing difficulties. They immediately took her in the back. When we saw the vet an hour later, I explained she has severe anxiety including separation anxiety. I was told she needed X-rays and bloodwork which I had to pay for in advance. He said it would take 1.5 hours more for X-rays and radiologist report. I requested updates 3 times and received none. After 4 hours I insisted on an update. I figured if the vet didn't see anything on the X-rays we could go home to wait for the radiologist report. I was sure my dog was as crazed as we were after 4 hours there. I was then informed that they hadn't even taken the X-rays yet and didn't know when they would because at that point the waiting room was packed. We got the dog and left. She was an emotional mess and severely dehydrated from panting for 4 hours. I was not given a refund for what I paid. I had to wait 4 days and several phone calls later for that. The front desk is perfectly capable of accepting large payments for services NOT yet rendered but incapable of providing refunds. This is not my first bad experience with LIVS either, but it will definitely be my last! Total incompetence at its finest. They are all about the $$$$$. Read Less

I came with an emergency with my dog after being told by my vet to go to your office. My vet called ahead and explained situation, and asked me to do the same and say we were on our way, which I did. My dog needed an ultra sound before I could know for sure if she had pyometra or was pregnant. I rushed to your office and after waiting for quite a while found out the internal medicine people who do those tests were gone for the day. I was told I could leave my dog overnight to be monitored and get the ultra sound in the morning. The doctor I saw said she needed more xrays to get a better view of my dogs belly to which I asked can we do the xrays tonight and I’ll bring her back for the ultra sound in the morning? I had received the estimates by then and determined I could not afford an overnight stay, I thought the doctor I dealt with understood.. she said they could do the xrays before I took her home and left the room. An assistant came in a few times, she was very sweet. I was under the impression my dog was getting the xrays and I asked her one of the last times she came in if they had been done and she told me that she thought they had. I waited in the exam room for over an hour when the doctor came in saying she heard I had questions.. so I asked what the result of the xrays were. That’s when the doctor told me that no xrays had been taken because they can’t do anything until I consented to one of the estimates they gave me. Needless to say I was upset and asked for my dog so I can leave, I’m a single mother and was there with my 10 year old child. It was almost 9pm at that point and after 3 hours and $225 later I was no closer to finding out what was wrong with my dog. I paid, got her script and left! Came back for ultra sound at 8am next morning.. 3 hrs later, and another $380 was told my dog did indeed need the surgery. Had I had your establishment do the surgery with the 2/3 days of overnight stays afterwards it would have cost me upwards of $10,000.00. I brought my dog somewhere else, she received the surgery within 2 hrs of leaving and it’s costing me approximately a 5th of that. Shame on you for making me feel like I may have to put my dog down because your prices are so inflated I’d have to take out a loan to pay them. The staff that answers the phones.. are very nice but grossly uniformed and the fact that my dog received no real treatment because you had not received my Consent aka been paid yet is disgusting. I will never recommend your establishment because it is very clear that money far out weighs your concern for the patients you treat! Read Less

I came into Long Island Veterinary Specialists for an emergency at 10:45 pm Wednesday night and, although I was told (both on the phone & in person) it was an hour and a half wait, we were not seen until 3:00 am Thursday morning. We saw Laura Fiore, DVM. Although she has an awful professional reputation among my family and friends, I didn't have another option. Dr. Fiore came in after reviewing my cat's blood work and notes from our regular vet, did *not* do a physical exam on my cat and began to list treatment options in response to what I explained was the presenting problem. At the end of the consultation, she informed me she would be taking my cat into the back for 'a minute' in order to take his temperature. My cat didn't return for over a half hour, causing concern. A tech informed me that the vet, Laura Fiore, was only now performing a physical exam on my cat. When Dr. Fiore finally returned (I was the LAST person in the waiting room) she began listing the drugs (which they coincidentally sold in-house) she was going to place him on. One of the medications listed was in the same class as a drug my cat was already on.. so, like a well-versed owner, I inquired about this. Laura Fiore instantly went on the defense. She smirked while explaining the drug class the medication fell into and how that would assist with the problem. My cat was already on a benzodiazepine for that reason so I just wanted to make sure this new drug was a necessity versus tweaking the dosage of the medication he was on. Dr. Fiore became snippy and rude. Before parting ways I requested a copy of her notes to be emailed directly to me. Dr. Fiore was less than thrilled but agreed to send them to me as well. Good thing too because, although I provided her with my vets' information during the appointment, she STILL sent the notes to the wrong vet's office. Overall, Laura Fiore, DVM, didn't interact with my cat (her patient) & had an unapproachable demeanor. I would not recommend them. Read Less

I do find that drs and management are very much about the $$$ and not what is best for the animal. We were not prepared to spend 3k on our pup. My dog went in for surgery and had to stay for 3 days. She had never slept away from home before. However, knowing well-trained staff would be there with her overnight was very comforting. They told me someone would call between 10 and 12 every morning to update me, and not only did they call BEFORE 10, but it was one of the doctors who called each time. They personally checked on her, fed her and walked her...not an assistant, not a vet tech, but a veterinarian! They didn't rush off the phone...they listened & answered all of my questions. Our dog woke up with a really bad cough at 0400 on Memorial Day. She sounded like a goose - as if she wanted to get something out but nothing. This was the closest place to the south shore with the best reviews so we drove out an hour later. A very nice gentleman did an intake as soon as we walked in, although we did wait a while to see the actual vet. Almost an hour later, she came in. She said that it was probably an infection and gave us antibiotics. For the time being, that We hide the capsules in a lean meat (turkey or chicken) but she's been taking them. We've also been giving her honey. So far, the cough has been significantly reduced. I really appreciated that someone from the office followed up to see how she was doing. While this place is a little out of the way for us, we would certainly recommend it and come back should another emergency arise. Read Less

My dog was diagnosed with glaucoma in both the eyes. he lost eyesight in one eye and could barely see from the other eye. I took him to many eye specialist, everyone one said they cannot do anything because he will eventually become blind. but Dr John S. Sapienza did some test on him and informed us that he has glaucoma in one eye but the other eye is fine , only need to give drops to produce tears. His eyes/ cornea was scratched up. The drops he have gave were like a miracle. My baby's one eye is fully functional and he can see from that eye properly. He doesn't bump into things anymore, there is no redness in eyes. I brought our 19 year old dog in yesterday while he was having a seizure. As soon as I walked in, the staff came around the counter to assist me without asking any questions. They lovingly took our dog and put him in intensive care. They were able to subdue his seizures and cool him down. His fever was 109.5. The vet saw me shortly after and discussed our options. I told her that I had to wait for my wife to make a decision. They were extremely patient and compassionate with us. Ultimately Jake's time with us was up and they helped to make our decision an acceptable one for our family. Everyone from the front desk to the technicians and the person that handled the financials were very compassionate and the expenses were surprisingly less than I had imagined. At one of the most distressing times of my life, every member of the staff did all they could to help me through. I am particularly grateful to his surgeon, Dr Leyva, for his dedication, skill and humanity. All the doctors and nurses in the intensive care unit took such great care to monitor my dog's condition and keep him comfortable. Without fail, every member of staff was patient and encouraging. Someone even dug my car out of the snow and refused to accept anything more than a hug in thanks. Dr. Kim from Long Island Veterinary Specialists is an absolute miracle worker. Just when we had thought our dog Chip was going to lose his sight, Dr. Kim showed us the path to recovery all the while preventing him from surgery. We were sure that there were no options left after Chip's eye had not opened for weeks, and the mere wave of a hand near his face made him wince. We were all heart-broken at the signs of his pain, and previous suggestions simply did not work for him. Dr. Kim informed us exactly what to do with his treatment, and motivated us to be stern with keeping his cone- collar on at all times. She really stood by us as we fought against this devastating ailment, and never gave up hope that we weren't going to get through this together. She tended to Chip with such love, care and professionalism, we are forever thankful to the work that she does. I brought my dog in for eye surgery, he had distichiasis. I had VIP pet insurance for him. When we meet with Dr. Sapienza, we discussed the insurance I had and he said no problem that he has dealt with VIP Pet Insurance and they cover most of the surgery. Well, after the surgery and I submitted the paperwork to get reimbursed. I found out that Dr. Sapienza filled out the paperwork codes wrong and I wouldn't be getting any money back. I emailed and called Sapienza and he finally did respond, he said he wasn't going to redo the paperwork and that I should just make a lot of noise with the insurance company to get the money. He is pompous, dismissive and his claim to fame is working on Regis Philbin's cat. The reason why I did give 2 stars is because he did do good work on my dog. But for him as a person, he would get 0 stars. I would not recomend him to anyone I know. A good bedside manner of another doctor is worth traveling someplace else. Yesterday, I took my keeshond for an appointment with Dr. Panich. Not only did my dog not receive the standard of care, but he did not receive any care at all : 1. She did not examine him or take any tests, even though I requested this (and I was charged $240.00); 2. My dog was to be taken off of paxil, although on the phone she said she would check how to do this and know by the date of my appointment on my appointment, she told me this was not her field and to just stop it when I told her this medication could cause bad results to my dogs health to just stop it, she said it is not the same in dogs as in people and if he got sick it would just be very drowsy, queasy, not wanting to eat (Yet she earlier told me she knew nothing about this on the phone she indicated she would consult with another dr which she never did). She also said he could be sick a couple of days I asked if I should bring him in if he gets sick and she said no, why pay $300 to bring him in. 3. She was unprofessional, condescending and abrupt. She would not let me discuss my dogs problems at all; 4. She diagnosed a steroid (which my dog has had bad reactions to in the past and is listed on the web as having possible serious side effects -- I also checked with other vetinerary providers on this) without checking the medical records sent over, without consulting with me, without examining the dog or taking any tests at all. 5. I was given 3 different versions of how the steroid should be administered. 6. When I asked her about my dogs very dry and peeling nose she said it was all right minor (his nose is cracked and has pieces flaking off) 7. I called the office and told them and asked for a refund they said to me why did you pay the bill (someone named Lexi). In summary, I was charged for a service I never received ($240.00) my dog was prescribed medicine which could have been harmful to his health and well being as well as being advised to just stop the paxil, she was indecisive about how to administer the prescription and she put down a fictious drs name as a referral who I have never heard of (what happened to honesty?) This does not seem to be consistent with what a vet should be she seemed to have to concern at all about my dogs health, comfort well being and I would like, not only, my money back but to get her educated on how to care for animals well being. She obviously does not care. Read Less

Brought in my 3 yr old guy tonight after he got a hold of one of my medications-- I had called the ASPCA poison control center and they said bring him to a vet asap. As we were leaving home he was starting to show behavioral signs that he definitely wasn't himself and I was pretty worried. Front office staff at LIVS were calm and friendly on the phone and in person. When we arrived my boy was seen almost immediately. Dr Lieberman was nothing short of phenomenal. Before I knew the prognosis I told her point blank I absolutely adore this dog do WHATEVER must be done for him. (I realized later I had essentially just handed over a verbal figurative blank check-- but faced with the situation I genuinely felt like money was something I would handle later.) After he was fully evaluated it was determined that he was (Thank goodness) NOT in a critical situation but should be carefully monitored for the night. Dr Lieberman came into the room and explained all of my options and that he was stable enough to go home. She explained he could be monitored in the ICU overnight but it would be at least $2,000+ and the medicine he had eaten was extremely unlikely to cause any permanent damage. She could have easily walked into the room and just told me he needed to stay there overnight and I would have not even questioned it. But Dr. Lieberman didn't do that -- she was direct and honest---and since he essentially was safe and just needed a close "mom-eye" monitoring him for the night I brought him home and saved THOUSANDS of dollars. And not only was Dr Lieberman honest, thoughtful and thoroughly comprehensive in my boys care and evaluation, she actually took the time to completely explain the biochemistry at a cellular level to me --exactly WHY the overdose of this particular medication was not dangerous. Overall my experience with LIVS was outstanding. Dr. Lieberman is a living example of a truly extraordinary vet with awesome doggy AND people skills. I genuinely don't believe my boy or I could have been treated with more care, thought, kindness or honesty. A+ --- 5 stars. Read Less

Our Siberian Husky, Achilles, developed severe allergies last year. His beautiful clear face was ridden with sores and open wounds. He would itch endlessly and really no medication or topical creams seem to help. We went to our regular vet and then to another to get a second opinion but to no avail. Finally, we decided perhaps we should see a specialist and after some research, came upon Long Island Veterinary Specialists and the vet, Dr. Rada Panich. Dr. Panich was an absolute pleasure to deal with. She was very gentle with our Achilles and was extremely knowledgeable about his ailments. She gave us several tablets and topical creams for him and to our good fortune it did the trick. Not only was he back to his usual beautiful self, but she left two very skeptical dog parents, true believers in the meaning of "specialist". We would, without a doubt, recommend Ms. Panich to anyone dealing with severe pet allergies. Read Less

Read Less

Read Less

Someone even dug my car out of the snow and refused to accept anything more than a hug in thanks. I have never seen a hospital, for either people or animals, where there is such consistent expert care combined with empathy and efficiency. I shall always recommend LIVS to anyone in need of specialist veterinary services. Read Less

I lost my cat this past week, during eye surgery they discovered numerous cancerous masses that would have only given her a very short time if we were to bring her home. This came so unexpected since she was supposed to be coming home the next day with her eye all better. Both Dr. Marino and Dr. Sapienza were nothing but kind and compassionate as well as the front desk staff. I received constant updates during this ordeal so I never felt out of touch as to what was going on leading up to her diagnosis. I was also not rushed into making a decision. This was such a heartbreaking day for us and they did everything they could to help ease the pain of losing our little piglet. Read Less

having had dogs for more than 30 years, i have had my share of dog illnesses and dog hospitals. i must say, during a most stressful time, there was not a person who was not compassionate and caring-and i mean not only the doctors but even the women who answer the phone. everyone was wonderful and i would never go to any other animal hospital . and the doctor was not in a rush, we talked, we discussed options and i must say, we were on the same page .all in all, a pleasant experience during a stressful time. I had an emergency with my hamster named Popcorn at 1 am tonight (I won't get into details about what happened... it's pretty grotesque). The vet saw me right away and did everything in her power to make the cost as low as possible. They were all very friendly and didn't act like it was insane to bring a hamster to the vet at 1 am! I am so pleased and would definitely recommend this vet to anyone!!! It's so amazing that they are open 24 hours. Read Less

It was truly a blessing to come across such thoughtful care, and I recommend Dr. Kim to anyone with an irreplaceable furry family member. Read Less

Some doctors just don't realize how important it is to treat people correctly. Read Less

Read Less
