I went to this vet because my dog had a pinched nerve in his neck and I wanted to try acupuncture.  The first time Dr. Selmer was very charming and we seemed to have a good result so I went back another time even though his office is two hours away.  Second experience not so good, but he said sometimes that happens so I said, OK I'll give it another shot.  Today I made the drive in pouring rain, got to his office and his assistant, not a vet tech, grabbed my dog by the nose in order to see his gums.  My dog, who is very easygoing, yelped and I asked what she was doing.  Next thing I know Selmer is telling me he won't treat my dog.  First of all, when I pay $100 for an exam, I expect it to be done by the vet, not an office assistant.  Second, he handled the entire thing very badly; an apology was in order and he should have done the exam.  Since the office was empty, I can't imagine he was overloaded or pressed for time.  This guy needs to get his ego in check.  I drove back and forth - two hours each way - and he refused treatment because I objected to my dog being grabbed by the snout.  I don't care if he's the best holistic vet in the world, his attitude and self aggrandization more than nullifies any technical qualifications he may have.  Buh bye. I was very happy with my visit to Advance Animal Care Center. Dr. Selmer and staff where very caring, compassionate and professional. I was a bit scared and worried about my Diamonds health issues; After the initial check up, Dr. Selmer discussed how we were going to go forward and get Diamond into better health, his upbeat attitude helped me to a better frame of mind. I must say after her first acupuncture treatment her breathing and her leg was amazing result, but again we take it one thing at a time knowing there will be good days and not so many bad days. A year later and Diamond is doing well, we still have issues to address but we will get there. It's important to be patient when trying Chinese medicine, and in some cases it can be pricey, but it's the best care I've ever gotten for Diamond. Great office, great staff, and great doctor. After reading some interesting reviews here, I wanted to weigh in on my experiences with Dr Selmer and his practice. Its a shame that some people have felt they were treated unfairly by Dr Selmer but I do believe that a thorough examination of your pet with full testing, even though sometimes pricey, will long term bring better results. And I have two healthy happy cats at home to prove my case.Case #1: JBFebruary of 2014, JB, my 12 year old male cat started losing weight rapidly, eating excessively and drinking water like crazy. He went down to 9 pounds! I of course started freaking out and took him to my vet at the time. The vet told me he probably had cancer even though his blood test results came back negative. She told me to prepare for his demise in a few weeks because she couldnt figure out what was wrong with him. She was literally scratching her head with confusion. So, obviously heart broken, I started to search for a second opinion. Then I found Dr Selmer, but since he was on vacation, he referred me to a wonderful doctor at an Emergency Hospital for further testing till he returned. She did further tests and after a few weeks of waiting, JB's diagnosis came back with Irritable Bowel Syndrome which turned out to be totally manageable! Of course, all this testing was not cheap but he's my boy so I was prepared to get to the bottom of his illness. Dr Selmer then took over his care, ordered a nutritional diet and some chinese herbs to balance out his steroids. His whole concern was that JB have a better quality of life and not be so reliant on the Western medicine which can cause damage long term.  As of today, almost 2 years later, JB is a healthy 13 pound tom cat playing with his toys and purring away everyday. THAT is only because of Dr Selmers care. JB does have to go in for blood work every 6 months which does cost a bit, around $700 but the results then lead to tweaking his herbs and his food as he ages and its worth it to me to have him in my life healthy and happy.Case #2: SarahFor years Sarah has scratched at her ears. The old vet would check for ear mites, and various issues but could never get to the bottom of her ear trouble. They instructed me to clean out her ears every other day, add drops, you name it. Then they thought she had an allergy to fish or plastic so there went the plastic bowls, to be replaced with glass. Then the old vet finally concluded that "Some cats just get gunk in their ears". Case closed for them. But yet still no relief for my suffering cat. Took her to Dr Selmer after the great results with JB and he asked if he could run tests on her ears for an infection. I of course said yes and then wondered why the other Vets didnt check for that. He said it was because of the cost of the test which was about $300. I agreed to it since we had no other answers and lo and behold, infection was the cause! He put a dissolving ear medicine into her ears which melted after a few days and BOOM, Kitty has no more ear scratching! That was done in February of 2015 and she's been infection free ever since. An integrative approach to Veterinary care is not inexpensive. And it can be time consuming. But for me, the results are what speak volumes. JB was basically left for dead from the old vet. Sarah was finally given up on as well with her issues. Dr Selmer is thorough and gets to the bottom of the issues and it does cost. But if you want the best, sometimes you just gotta pay for it. Read Less

STAY AWAY FROM THIS VET!!!!  I went to see Dr. Selmer with my pet. I first called and was told that he was a holistic veterinarian by his secretary. When I arrived, this was not the case. When I mentioned this to him, he responded with "you mentioned you saw my website so you should have known". I guess it is their policy to lie to get you into their facility. He recommended a nutritional analysis because.... I still do not know why this was done. My dog was in perfect health and I just wanted to check his heart out. I trusted him in doing the tests that needed to be done and was left poorer with no answers to my questions. After spending $700 on the so called "nutritional analysis" my dogs blood work was perfect. So I spent all this money to still be left wondering what is going on with my dog. I did bring this up to him and he said "you signed the estimate". Which is true but I trusted him, as the doctor, to not rip me off and do only what needed to be done. I would stay very very very far away from this dishonest animal hospital. Read Less

After seeing 3 vets in the Huntington area and spending several thousand dollars only to hear that my 9 month old male Doberman pinscher was having growing pains and was on all kinds of drugs to help him deal with the pain. He was acting like a 15 year old dog who yelped and cried if you went near him, the lightest touch made him scream, it was like he was ready to pass on, this being my 3rd Dobie I knew there was something else going on, that's when I learned of Dr. Selmer. On my first visit with Dr. Selmer he walked into the office, I described what was happening to my dog, he looked into his very red eyes, smelled his breath, did a few other basic in the room tests and turned to me and said your dog does not have growing pains he has a stagnant liver. I looked at him and said stagnant liver, he said yes, get him off all meds, they are going to destroy his urinary tract. At that time he started my dog on some chinese hollistic medicine and did other testing as well. It turned out that my dog had Lyme disease also, which was tested twice by the other vets a few weeks prior, he was treated for that misdiagnosis also. Now my dog is a robust full of life dobie, he has not yelped or cried from pain since and he has not taken any drugs since my first office visit, I believe if it weren't for Dr. Selmer and I accepted the diagnosis of the 3 other vets my dog would have had a miserable short life. Some of the previous reviews mentioned cost as being an issue, I felt he was very thorough and yes it does cost extra money, thats something that as a person you have to ask yourself, is my pet worth it? I can tell you that Dr. Selmer was very knowledgeable and too the point. He gets 5 stars just for being able to treat my dog in the manner that he did. Read Less

Dr. Selner is great! Can't imagine the other reviewer's incident happening - he has been nothing but friendly to us and a thousand times better than our last vet. Our cat was very ill and he made sure to do all the proper tests, keep in contact with us, answer any and all questions, and he emails back quickly. It's so nice to now have a vet invested in our cat's condition, he furthered his knowledge on the illness even though we are using a specialist to chiefly address the condition.  Never have to wait long because they don't overbook appointments like other offices. The office was clean and welcoming with plenty of on site parking. When I came in, everyone greeted me with a great attitude. It was lovely to walk into a new place and feel so at home. The doctor and his assistant took care of my cat's wound and helped with amazing follow up care. I don't use a vet often, but when I do, you can be sure it will only be Advanced Animal Care Center.

Read Less

I have been a client for almost ten years. Your experience with him goes above and beyond being loving and friendly, which he is. His knowledge and experience are second to none, and he does NOT prescribe harsh medications to mask your pets illness, he finds the root cause and cures it as naturally as he can through diets, supplements, and acupuncture.
