Again Dr. Berkowitz and his staff came to the rescue. When our dog Nell went down with a very nasty internal infection Jay and his staff didn't hesitate to stay late after practice and perform life-saving surgery.I have used Jay (Dr. Berkowitz) since the late 80's when he was a "mobile" vet, working out of his van and I have to say that the expertise, care and compassion are second to none. When we moved from Port Washington out to Huntington we experimented with other practices, but we are back with Old Shore despite the 1 hour drive to get there.A huge thank you to all of you in the practice. He was horrible. I took my cat in for a well care visit just wanting to get my cat on record with a new vet, as my old vet left the state. Dr. Berkowitz dragged her out of the carrier so roughly she was terrified, hair standing up all over her body. He didn't do much of an examination--didn't palpate her abdomen or do any blood draws (I don't even remember him using a stethoscope on her)--and he didn't give her even the legally required rabies vaccination. I was concerned about her weight, and he barely looked at her and said, "It's fine." (I asked a different vet, and she is, in fact, over weight.) He was snotty and condescending to me and obviously didn't care at all about my pet. Maybe he's good with dogs, but don't take your cat there. Read Less

I moved to Port from the city about a year ago and now Dr. Berkowitz is my go to vet! I've never met a vet that actually wants to save you money and is so generous with his advice and guidance. I can't say enough positive things about this vet. I truly feel like my dog is in good hands. As an older dog he developed a rare condition overnight and he was able to diagnose and with some creative thinking was able to get the medication to treat it. They don't even make this medication for dogs since the conditions is so rare. He's always busy but will always take the time needed in the office and follow up afterwards. Doc B is the BEST!!!!  I am a single mother and have a hard time paying for things. Especially vet bills. I love my animals so much and I bring them in when they are sick. Sometimes its the cat or dinner and he knows that. He treats me with the utmost respect as he does my animals. My dog has been hit by a car three (yes you heard it) three times!  Doc has taken such good care of my little guy.  Georgie is his name. He is a yorkie. We have been taking our animals to Dr Berkowitz for several years and he and his staff have always been a true pleasure to interact with.  Dr Berkowitz takes his time during each visit, clearly likes animals and always asks the right probing questions to help him with his diagnosis. My first dog, Pepe, had congestive heart failure and partial paralysis in his back legs at around the age of 12, but Dr. Berkowitz's treatment was able to keep him going another four happy years. Currently, I live in Levittown, but I still bring my new dog, Thor, all the way to Dr. Berkowitz in Port Washington for my veterinary needs. Whether it's for an appointment or an unexpected medical matter, if you want a vet who cares, who knows what he's doing and who is able to think outside the box to help your pet, then he's the guy. Dr. Berkowitz is a fabulous vet-caring, compassionate and very knowledgeable. Years ago he nursed my boxer puppy back to health from an extreme case of kennel cough that made a turn for the worse. When it came time to have my boxer cross the rainbow bridge (she was 12 1/2), he was beyond wonderful, walking me through the process. I was recommended to Dr. Berkowitz by a friend (15 years too late).  I needed to take my pet for an exam and I knew it could possibly be one the last.  Dr. Berkowitz and his team got me in for an appointment immediately, addressed my concerns (all of them) with compassion and caring, and made me feel like I was in a safe environment.  I had been to 3 other vets over the course of my pets life.  NONE were like Dr. Berkowitz.  He treated Buddy, gave him medication and made me feel so comfortable.  When I left his office, for the first time ever, I didn't feel like I was being robbed.  He performed some tests, gave him an injection, medications, and drops to go.  I could not stop bragging about his office to everyone I spoke to.  He did everything he could to help, when he knew himself that I was going to be left with a very difficult decision.  I brought Buddy home.  2 days later, I called them back.  I knew it was time.  When I got there, I did not want to go through with it even though I knew it was time.  Dr. Berkowitz shared a personal story of his.  He wanted to make us feel better.  And he did.  I knew I needed to make the decision.  Dr. Berkowitz and his team were so sensitive to how my family felt.  I asked him if I could hug him afterwards.  He let me.  What a sweet man.  I recommend his office a million percent.  Thank you Old Shore Animal Clinic.  I will be bringing my other dog to you starting immediately and telling everyone they should bring their pets there as well!
