My roommates and I got a cat while living in Henrietta so we started taking him here. They always answer our questions as well as they can, are incredibly friendly and take good care of our cat, Fodi. He hates the vet in general but they do everything they can to make the visit bearable for him. They provide towels, and usually let us into an examining room while we wait so the cat doesn't have to sit with all the dogs and noise in the waiting area. No one likes paying for a vet visit and the price is my only complaint, even though I know it's something that must be paid. Thank you Suburban for keeping our cat happy and healthy! Read Less

Switched over from Henrietta Hospital on Friday, and wow this place is a 360 from Henrietta Animal Hospital. I remember even coming here as a kid bringing our family pets here, the customer service and compassion for animals hasn't changed here. I went to bring my cat in thinking she had worms, but the doctor was asking questions and he couldn't find any. Then I said just look at her butt and he said that sometimes the glands can get plugged. Instead of pushing medication or do this or that, or its my fault; like the other animal hospital always seems to be like. He goes we can easily take care of it in the back and get her updated on her shots. Seriously if you have a horrible vet, or something seems off. Bring your fur babies here Read Less

Okay so I went here earlier this year with my two kitties. Everything started off relatively okay. The doctor was kind and the staff was inviting. However, we were mislead to believe that our vaccines would cost much less than we ended up paying. When I asked the front desk why this was so they simply said it was the doctor's charges that she had applied. That was the only explanation we received.......how is that fair??? My boyfriend and I paid a lot of money for our services, more than we really have to pay, and the only explanation was "that's just how the doctor charged you"?The only reason I'm givign this place 2 stars is because of the caring vet assistnat that held our animals while the doctor did her examination. Thank hyou for being kind and please never change. We will be taking our business elsewhere where charges are fairly applied with explanation. Read Less

After 20+ years of driving an hour each way to see my vet in my old home town, I am thrilled to have found Suburban and feel comfortable making them "the new usual". Dr. Fisher and all the staff have been exceptional with our very, very nervous Great Dane, all 120 lbs. of her. Their patience and kindness have been exemplary. The staff and Dr. Blair also demonstrated their depth of compassion when what we thought would be a routine visit for our kitten turned out to be his last trip. Stephanie hugged me and cried with me at the heartbreaking turn in events, and the kindness of the entire staff eased the burden of a terrible day. Like all MVA operated hospitals, prices can be a bit dear, but the quality of care is outstanding and we have never had a hard sell on any additional procedures or products. Our questions and concerns are always answered respectfully and the Doctors are always willing to discuss various treatment options and prioritize according to restrictions in our budget, time and wishes. I have been looking for a veterinary practice like this for two decades; so glad to have found them! Read Less

I just moved back to Rochester and was looking for a new vet- I saw good reviews about this hospital so thought this would be a good choice. I was told to get there early before my first visit to fill out paperwork so I got there 15 min early and was put in a room to wait. I wasn't given anything to fill out and waited another 40 min prior to someone coming in. I was then told that they needed all of his records for his history but I was not told to call and have these sent over ahead of time so they didn't have any of his paperwork for this visit (making it somewhat useless to ensure he was up to date on everything he needed). My dog's old (16) and when I first scheduled with this place I asked if they were able to "get dogs in quickly to be seen" once they're established there because sometimes he has issues that come up all of a sudden and I was told that they definitely would be able to. However, the first time I called in for an acute issue that needed a tech appointment I was told "I should book these appointments 3-4 weeks in advance because tech appointments are usually full at that point" which is very frustrating as it's sometimes impossible to predict when something might happen that far in advance. I also needed to get heartworm protection for my dog and asked several times when checking out at the first appointment AND at the follow up tech appointment if there was anything I needed to do prior to this- I was told that no, I could just call a few days before I needed to pick it up. When I called ahead as instructed to schedule a time to pick this up I was then told that I needed a heartworm test done before I could get this which means I had to bring my dog back in for yet another visit!! (Even though he had just been there twice!)The only positive is that the vet I saw was very friendly and thorough with her exam which is the only reason I stayed. It was just a frustrating initial experience to not be told things correctly and have to bring my dog in multiple times because of this. Read Less

We have a regular vet that we take our cats to, but one of them became ill and needed to be seen right away. So we called on Suburban Animal Hospital and they were fantastic. They treated our friend with the utmost compassion. Nothing against the other vet; there's just a more clinical feel to that atmosphere. He employs great knowledge, but lacks warmth. At Suburban, everyone was so friendly and welcoming. The technician and the doctor explained every step of the procedures as well as our options. Our questions were thoroughly answered. My daughter really handled everything; I just transported her and our pet. But I was pleased with all aspects of the service from start to finish. Read Less

I'm so glad I found this hospital! My dog had a full body rash for over a year. It started in San Diego and I had gone to two different vets in hopes to get the rash cured. They did rounds of antibiotics on her and prescribed her some lotions, but sadly they didn't work. My dog was scratching constantly and had fur falling out excessively. I came to this hospital and saw Dr. Blair. He took samples of her skin and prescribed her steroids that worked like a charm! The rash never came back and I'm so thankful! Read Less

We are new to the area, and I chose this vet based on their Yelp reviews. The facility is clean, and they provide all the usual services that one would expect from a vet. The wait time was short.  They insisted that we test our dog for heartworm. Our previous vet always recommended it, but allowed us to skip the test since our dog never missed a dose of her medication. The risk with heartworm is that your dog can become sick if you give them the preventative medication if they are already infected. Since our dog took the medication 2 weeks prior to her appointment, and didn't become sick, we believed the test to be unnecessary. Unfortunately, they were only willing to provide a prescription for more heartworm prophylaxis if we agreed to perform the blood test, and the phlebotomy process for this unnecessary test did not go well. Our small dog is very easy going, and usually tolerates her vet appointments. The the techs were too timid to hold our dog's leg securely, and as a result stuck her multiple times (3 needles, and multiple sticks per needle). Hours later, our dog is still shivering at home. The day started off by calling this veterinary office around 0820 hrs. We left a message asking if we needed to bring our dog in for kennel cough or if they were able to complete a prescription by phone. The secretary said that she would leave a message for the doctor and he would return our call. A second call was made around 1100 hrs. We asked the same question and the secretary gave us the same answer. A third call was completed at 1126 hrs. I had asked the secretary if she could just ask the doctor the simple question of making an appointment or getting the prescription by phone. She replied stating he was busy and he usually returns calls around noon time or when they get time. I asked the secretary if she was in the same building as the doctor because it seemed as if I were talking to a call center. Well, the secretary said the doctor is in the room next to her. The doctor did return our call at noon. He said that we would have to bring our dog in tomorrow. For such a simple question couldn’t that have been answered at 0820 hrs. We brought our dog to our new veterinary office after we explained he had kennel cough. The veterinary bypassed the normal procedure of just having us walk through the front, but instructed us to use the side door to avoid other pets catching the same. Good luck if your thinking of bringing your pet to this office. Read Less

My daughter strongly suggested we go to Suburban animal hospital because she LOVED Dr. Blair. In deed we went and he was wonderful, very compassionate when we had to put two dogs down. Purchased new dogs, used the $75 coupon to get the dogs fixed at University because you can't BEAT that deal. We used Suburban for everything else though. We boarded our dogs here before and didn't have a problem. The nice thing was if they found anything else while your dog was there when they did their scheduled exam, they called us before doing ANYTHING, to get approval. Same for our daughter, they call before any additional treatments etc. So on Labor Day weekend, we made reservations to board our two dogs. We were given a price and were expecting the $200 ish for boarding as well as we knew our one dog was due for exam and shots. Well after we're on the road they call to advise it's going to be an extra $200, because our other dog needed an exam and shots as well. That's a significant increase so I was upset (their excuse was when we made the reservation he was ok, but then in the two weeks since we made the reservations, his old immunizations expired. REALLY!! And you didn't "see it". So I was upset, but we were already out of the state. When I asked for the office mgr, she said he had to have the shots THEN or he couldn't stay... What could we do, we were already out of the state!! So I'm ticked, but what are we going to do, they're getting an extra $200. Then we get back and our daughter goes to pick up the dogs for us, since we had to work and there's an ADDITIONAL $60 because they had to put medicine in his throat because he was homesick and crying alot. What happened to the call to get permission before any additional treatments/meds??? AT THIS POINT WE MUST BE GETTING PUNKED!! So now our daughter pays for the additional $300 that we didn't have any clue about when dropping the dogs off. I called when I hear about it and said I wanted to talk to Dr. Blair. The receptionist said is that because you're going to dispute the additional $60.00? I told her I wanted to discuss the whole visit. So originally I felt the issues were totally with the office staff. I waited and waited, and... well still waiting, no call. So clearly this "situation" was condoned by the doctor, that's the only reason we could imagine we didn't get a call back from the Dr. when he knows, at this point, they have a VERY disgruntled patient. I wouldn't expect this behavior from our children's dr., why would I expect it from our fur babies dr? I really feel like disputing the $60 because permission was never given... nor was it ever asked for. Needless to say, this visit has cost them a number of  "patients".. We WON'T be returning and will tell all that ask what happened. Us finding a new vet may have been averted.. even after being charged well over double what the visit was going to call, by the doctor making a requested return call from a client that just paid them over $600 for a weekend stay!! My dog  was always a little scared at  her vet appointments. After a traumatic incident at home, vet appointments became too much for her to handle as every time she was physically restrained, she would completely panic (screaming and thrashing) and try to bite.  It felt like torture to bring her to her vet. Then I got a reference of another veterinary hospital- Suburban- that  specializes in treating anxious animals.  Dr. Blair and Dr. Doobar were able  to give my dog vaccines,  draw blood, and examine her without restraining her physically. This took some mild medication as well as extra time with a great deal of patience, treats, and care to cater to her needs. She was treated on the floor using distractions and calming techniques taking more than three staff and thirty minutes.  She did not bark, cry, or agress once, remaining relatively calm throughout. The cost was the same as any other appointment.  Now my blood pressure is lower having the relief of a vet that my dog can return to and knowing that she will be well cared for and protected by vaccines. I bring my dog in sometimes just to socialize him b.c he is still a puppy & they always make time to greet him & help socialize him. I can't say enough about Dr. Buckenberg- she helped with our last dog which was a very tough situation. I recommended my mom to her who has a older chihuahua that was VERY sick & the other vet she was seeing spent months trying to help him but he just kept deteriorating (to the point where my mom spent thousands in the animal ER.) Within a few months of seeing Dr. Buckenberg - she had him feeling, looking and doing DRASTICALLY better. 3 years later- he is healthy, happy & still alive b.c of the medicine & regiment Dr.Buckenberg has him on. We both credit her with saving his life. She is always helpful, knowledgeable & isn't scared to research more or alternative ways of dealing with tough situations. I've been a pet owner all my life, and of course have had some critters who had mild to severe to lifelong health problems, so I've spent a lot of time at vets. The doctors at Suburban Animal Hospital, and I believe I've had appointments with or spoken with all of them, are universally intelligent, professional, observant and skillful. And they've all excelled at explaining the problems and the various solutions clearly, with detailed alternatives outlined for care. Our rescue dog arrived in January with a ton of problems, emotional and physical, including food and inhaled allergies, but thanks to Suburban staff's ongoing recommendations and insights, and a great trainer and exercise guru, he's happy, well adjusted, calm, has hair again, and is as well behaved and cooperative as one can expect with a part spaniel/part Australian shepherd. Took our dog there after the dog hurt his arm. Was told by a vet there that we should wait 2 weeks to see how our dog would feel and then we would do x-rays. We were given some pain medication for him and some medicine and we waited. We then took him to Jefferson Vetinary Hospital as their x-rays were significantly cheaper and the Vet noticed right away that our dog's elbow was BROKEN!!! Took an x-ray immediately and the results were correct. The vet then spoke to a Surgeon who said that if we had brought him in 2-3 days from it happening, she could have saved his arm. Instead we now have to have his arm amputated. I know the dog will be fine and many dogs live great lives with 3 legs but its sad to think we were given HORRIBLE advice from someone that should've known what they were doing from the start. We will never go back there again and most likely I will seek legal action for the advice given that was false.Read Less

I discovered this hospital when acupuncture was recommended for my arthritic, elderly dog. I was so impressed with the staff and Dr. Hall's caring nature that we switched to Suburban permanently! What I'd thought was the end of the road for our dog turned into two more years! We were so thankful they helped us to enjoy 15 wonderful years with our beloved dog. Her comfort and well being was always of utmost importance to Dr. Hall. I cannot say enough nice things about Dr. Hall--she is very professional, but is clearly in this business for the love of animals. The bonus is, she is also absolutely wonderful with people! :) Read Less

We have looked into reviews of several places to board Spencer. We love Suburban as our vet to take care of our fur-babies and we have had wonderful experiences when boarding Spencer here. Even if there is a "glitch", they are excellent with customer service and making sure they exceed your expectations and work to rectify any issues. Spencer always comes out with high energy and his tail wagging. This is what we look for, that his is Happy to go there and happy when he comes out. We love the Boarding Report Card he comes home with. It includes important info as to when he ate last and went to the bathroom, as well as behavior report with personal comments from the staff. It also has pictures for us to see how much di he had in his Buddy times. Thank you to Shannon for the excellent customer service and to all the staff for taking care of Spencer!!Read Less

I just moved back here to Rochester from North Coast California. My poodle had begun having seizures in California, which I believe was due to the massive amounts of flea products we had to use there. (with the drought, the flea population has exploded)So I arrive here in Rochester with a poodle on seizure meds. Her prescription was running out from the California vet (who was awesome too) and I needed a refill. My sister uses Suburban for their little dog and so I went there. The place was clean, friendly and great! The staff was super nice. The tech who came in to do a quick temp and stuff was not too good. She threw her hands up and left after my wiggly poodle wouldn't stand still on the scale, but the other tech who came in with a laptop for details on her was great. Dr. B who came in after that was TERRIFIC! Great petside manner and was super informative. She was very understanding of my situation and we went from there. They did ask me to get all new blood work in 30 days, (even though I just had a full blood work up in Cal after the seizures, barely 2 weeks ago) but Dr. B tried to limit what was needed and understood my situation. Over all, at this point, I would recommend them to anyone! They even took my poodle in the back for nail trim. She did great. I have a problem with groomers as my poodle doesn't like to be touched with a brush or trimmer. Go figure, a poodle who doesnt like to be groomed. Oh well. Great experience! Read Less

I have been with Suburban for over a year and can not say enough positive things about the practice. From the minute you walk in the door, it is clean and the front desk people are welcoming and usually ready to great your pet by name! They never seem to overbook so there is no chaos in the waiting room and I've never had to wait more than a couple of minutes. Dr. Hall has been treating my aging shepherd with acupuncture with great success; they also worked me in immediately with a cat emergency when I was trying to leave for vacation. Moved into the area recently so I didn't know where to bring my cat when he was getting sick. He was vomiting quite a bit but I had to go to work, so I had a roommate bring him in and they were very accommodating, explained everything to her and gave her suggestions to pass along. She never felt like they were pushing anything on her and everything they did for my cat made complete sense to me, even though I wasn't in the room. The vet and vet techs gave us a lot of good, quality advice which we both really appreciated. I'm willing to do what needs to be done to take care of my pet, but I don't have a lot of money, so I want somebody who I can trust to tell me what he actually needs, not what they want to make money off of. Both my roommate and I felt like we got that and I really appreciated it, especially since I was already worried about not being able to be there. Read Less

I recently moved here and was looking to find a good place to take my cat Molly. Suburban far exceeded my expectations, everyone here is very accommodating, patient, and friendly -- the service is just phenomenal! I have taken my cat here for both exams and boarding. Definitely would suggest adding the "Buddy time" if you have a pet board here. When I came to pick Molly up I got a card with different photos of her enjoying her "Buddy time" and a report on how she did with eating, etc. I never received that at previous boarding places so I was very impressed. I also highly recommend Dr. Hall!! She is very patient and caring and when I was unable to answer her calls, she even took the time to write me a detailed email describing Molly's hyperthyroid condition and the different tx options available. I recently referred my friend to Suburban and she couldn't have been more happy with Dr. Hall as well! Read Less

I love this vet! Thankfully, I haven't had to visit for anything other than Wembley's annual appointments. It's an all around good experience. The staff manning the front desk are quick to help you as you walk in. I just love that they refer to the cat as the patient: "Is this Wembley here, ready for his appointment with Dr. Silberg."I'm always so surprised how clean they keep it in there, especially after seeing what the  room looks like after Wembley's visits -- puffs of cat hair and scattered catnip. The waiting room and appointment rooms are spotless. Dr. Silberg is wonderful. He remembers details about Wembley from our visit a year ago (likely due to good note taking), asks questions about how he's been over the year, any unusual changes in behavior, etc. He also shares some great info about new studies on keeping your pets healthy. He recently mentioned that plant soil can contain parasite eggs so be cautious of house plants or use sterilized soil. Wembley is our first pet (as adults) so the tips are super helpful for us. The other thing that's quite amazing is how calm Wembley is with him. Our cat is feisty on a normal basis, but with Dr. Silberg there's no biting, scratching or any bad behavior, especially considering how foreign of an environment it is for him.Even though this vet is a little out of the way for us, I'll continue visiting because of the excellent care Wembley gets with each visit. I highly recommend this vet for your pets!P.S. I also witnessed some great customer service when I was waiting for the final paperwork to print out. A woman came in with her pet bunny for her appt. at 3pm and mentioned that she had to pick up her daughter by 4pm. She wanted to make sure she'd be out in time. The receptionist checked with the doctor who said she was running behind. In any other situation, I'd assume the appt. would have to be rescheduled. But the receptionist quickly accommodated this lady by getting her in an appointment room to do the basic vet tech screening then they offered to board the bunny and have the vet look at her while the woman left to run her errands. Awesome, awesome veterinarians! I took my puppy for the first time today, and we had a wonderful experience.  My dog loved the techs and the vet, and had no problems at all.  Their annual exam was the most comprehensive that I have ever seen, and they explained each step of the process.  They gave my dog a 'report card', detailing his health, and explained procedures (along with pricing) that they thought would be useful.  The vaccinations were also inexpensive compared to other places that I've taken my puppy, including VetCo (at PetCo). What a great place. I brought my dog here for boarding a week after a hellacious experience where another place LOST my dog (so I was a little damaged).  The boarding is $22 ($11 a half day). Your dog gets placed in a fairly small cage (they have larger outdoor ones too but... it's winter) with a blanket (you can provide or they can). They'll bring your pup to pee/poop 4-5x a day. Nothing glamorous. But their attention to detail is awesome. They ask how much food/when to feed. They make sure your pup is up to date on all vaccinations. They write down everything you gave them and give it all back! They give you a tour of the facility- it's clean, not too many other dogs. They welcome you to call and will give you updates. They offer buddy play time for $4 for 15mn. A bath with ear cleaning/nail trim for $20. But the best part? (besides picking up your dog!) The best part is the TOTALLY precious Doggie Boarding Report they give you WITH PICTURES to tell you how your dog played/slept/ate/pooped/etc.I'll re-update my review when I go to the actual vet but so far, I'm smitten. They are very straight forward with you about what vaccinations your dog actually needs vs. what vets typically try to get you to give them to get more money. They explained everything I could ever want to know about my dog and told me in detail what they were doing each step of the way.  I recently moved to Syracuse, and really dread finding another vet.  I loved  them so much I'm considering keeping them as my vet and driving so I don't have to attempt to find another vet as great as them! We just moved to the area and needed to find a good, clean place to board our two dogs. So far we've left our dogs kenneled at Suburban three times (1 night, 4 nights, 6 nights). Each time the facilities have been very clean and our dogs have been well cared for. The staff continually comments on how much they liked having out dogs and how friendly they are. They are always very clean and the dogs hardly need a bath even after a week's stay! Initially they insisted on keeping our dogs in separate kennels, which I was concerned about as they are so used to being together. However the tech in charge of the dogs was happy to put them together once she met the dogs. Cons: The dogs are kept in large cages during the day (not my first choice, I'd rather they had runs,) but they are let out into the runs in the yard several times a day. They offer a whole list of services for your pets from nail trimming to a vet exam. While I prefer to be present for my pet's physical, it's nice to have the various options. I like the security of knowing that they are kenneled at the vet's also. If there is ever a problem, I know they'll be taken care of. Read Less

I would recommend Suburban to all my friends/family (and I have.) I've been been going here for years (brought both my last and current dog here.) The staff is always friendly & helpful. She is now taking care of my Great dane puppy Rocki & he actually gets excited to go to the vet! Both my family & my pets are grateful for Suburban & Dr.B.Read Less

Read Less
