Please, if you cherish the life of your injured or dying pet, for their sake, do not take them here. My brothers small dog was mauled by a large aggressive dog at the park and with it being Memorial Day weekend, he had no choice but rush him here. I can assure you that this place takes full advantage of the fact that they are the only place available on holiday weekends. They let my brothers sweet dog lay suffering while they gave him the options to either A. Pay up to $700 to put him down(completely astronomical if you ask me) or B. Pay $12,000 for a surgery with a 50% chance of survival. Yes, you read that right- $12,000!!!!!!! I understand that medical treatment can be expensive, but that is outrageous! While my brother and my whole family scrambled trying to find a way to either pay for the surgery or set up a payment plan, they let the suffering animal lay on an operating table. Dying. My question to them is- would this be how you treat a gun shot victim rushed into the ER? “I’m sorry- I can’t start the surgery until I have an entire payment plan set up. I know this man is dying, but too bad”. Literally the same thing. I’m truly not sure why they are in the animal business because they clearly have no care in the world for precious animals. I would not put it past the employees of this center to drive past dogs on the side of the road and leave them there because, who’s going to pay for the surgery?? If you have lost a pet in their center due to not being able to pay their OUTRAGEOUS charges- I’m so sorry. Again. Save your animals life and go somewhere else! Read Less

DO NOT GO HERE!!!!! If I could give 0 stars, I would! I don't even know where to start. This place is nothing but a scam. The veterinary doctors are RUDE and condescending. They took $3,000 from us and still could not figure out what was wrong with our puppy. Then treated us like killers when we wanted to discharge her because they were INCOMPETENT! Our 13 week old puppy was there from Friday to Sunday and refused to eat. I visited her Saturday and she ate for me. But once the food was gone, I asked for more and they said they would take care of it and basically told me to leave. I asked if they would please call me if she still refused to eat and I would come back. They said they would. I called again Saturday night. The person who answered the phone wasn't sure if my dog had eaten but said they'd definitely call me if she hadn't and I told her I would come right in. We went to pick her up Sunday at 3:30 and they informed us she STILL HAD NOT EATEN! THEY NEVER CALLED ME! They had a Vet Tech discharge us. They didn't even have the courtesy to bring the doctor in to talk to us even though we spent a small fortune there for them to do NOTHING! I requested the doctor come in and when she did, she was nasty. Acted like she couldn't even be bothered. Please, I beg you...do NOT take your pet here. They basically gave our puppy a death sentence. We ended up taking her to the Hilton Animal Hospital and they were fantastic! They properly diagnosed and are treating her. And now our puppy is on the road to recovery. Go anywhere else but here. They have no clue what they're doing. They do not care about your pet. DO NOT GO HERE! Read Less

4 am visit for my dog. When I called, the receptionist was cold and insensitive. Within the first 30 seconds was told “$120 just to walk through the door, and if euthanasia is needed , that would cost $______ (cant remember price, I was too irritated). I said we don’t even know what is wrong yet- she cut me off and said “cash, card, no checks”... her tone made my daughter cry (she was on speaker) and had no choice but to go. Care was unclear— a lot of could be this, could tha...t... $1700 would find out. I know it’s a business- but seriously- it was a seizure- and my vet had no problem diagnosing that with no tests. I probably wouldn’t have been so bothered if there was a different attitude with the receptionist when I called in the middle of the night. But there is no where else to go close by— so no choice. The initial phone call ruined any chance of me feeling like my dog’s best interests were at heart. See More Read Less

Our sweet kitty, Annie, got very very sick out of nowhere last night. Within twenty minutes, our sweet girl went from completely normal to almost dying in a mere twenty minutes. By the time I got her to the vet, she was rushed back and they called "Annie triage STAT". She was so sick, we thought she would die. Everyone there was so compassionate and skilled, and while they were clearly very worried, they moved mountains for her. She had a tumor on her spleen that had ruptured... and she was bleeding internally. Her temperature was super low, her blood pressure was so low they couldn't even get a pressure, and her color was terrible. They transfused her, removed her tumor and her spleen this morning, and have cared for her on the highest order. Miraculously, she not only made it through surgery, but has bounced back so well that the vets and vet techs all sound amazed. Obviously, we had a great outcome against all odds, but that's not why I'm giving this incredible animal hospital five stars; it's the people there that have impressed us. Their diligence, judgment, skill, compassion, and their excellent communication made one of the scariest and saddest nights of my life bearable. It's hard to express our gratitude in words - "thank you" seems insufficient. We would recommend them to anyone with an animal in crisis. The peace of mind knowing that our sweet girl was in great hands helped quell part of our fear and her survival is down to their skill (and she's a spunky little thing and wasn't ready to go yet.) We got to go visit her this evening, which was great, and our sweet little thing purred as we petted her, even in the cone of shame and with three lines still in her. Seeing her meant so much to us, especially considering how she looked the night before. As if by some miracle, we may actually be able to bring her home tomorrow! THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts. See More Read Less

I can''t say enough amazing things about this place. Our Jagger (1.5 years old belgian malinois) was is terrible shape from a esophagus perforation from a stick. He was given a 20% chance of living. We were out of sorts with all of the over whelming information. The people at VSES were completely amazing, answering all of our questions and concerns making Jagger a priority, we must have called them every 2 hours. To the front end, techs and doctors there, they all did a great... job. Which made it even better is that Jagger pulled through and he has been home with us for about 2 months, without a feeding tube and without any surgery. I see a lot of people complaining about cost. I am a healthcare professional and yes, it is expensive but imagine having to do life saving measures without insurance on a human, it would be 10x times more. Worth every penny because we have our boy back. I want to extend a huge thank you to everyone at VSES of Rochester, we truly appreciate everything you do!! See More Read Less

We had to take our dog Amira in yesterday afternoon for urinating blood. Of course it happened shortly after our vet closed for the day. She was also shaking and her nose was warm. It seemed that it was busy as there was no place to sit down because there were so many people there. I thought we would have to wait a while for Amira to be taken back and evaluated. But that was not the case, someone came right out and took her back to triage her. Within minutes they were back as...king us if they could cath her for a urine sample. Of course we gave them permission. About 15 minutes later we were called into an exam room and the vet came in and explained everything to us about the possibility of a UTI. The vet was very caring and helpful and supported my choice to send out the urine for a culture to be sure Amira was on the right antibiotics. We had to wait 30 mins for the result of the urinalysis and they let us stay in the exam room so Amira could be kept calm and relaxed. The vet then came back in and stated it was probably a UTI and even asked if I wanted an antibiotic that was given once or twice daily. Amira is not a fan of pills so I chose the once a day. The vet completely understood. After the vet was done talking to us a vet tech came in and gave us discharge instructions. Every staff member that we had interaction with was great. Despite how busy it seemed to be we were in and out in about 2 hours. Thank you for all your help! See More Read Less

So to start out, if your pet needs hospital care it is going to be expensive. There is no roundabout way to get away from that. If you love your dog like a member of the family and feel they deserve the best care possible then this is your place. They are very upfront with diagnosis and treatment. I brought our 8 Year Old Welsh Pembroke Corgi to them as she was in Renal failure and required 24 hour IV and monitoring. I could barely bring myself to leave her but I knew it was the right thing for her. I could have gone an easier and cheaper route through my local vet but she would not get the 24 hour care she needed. The staff was professional and nice. I called every day in the evening and they would email me pictures of my Foxy girl. I once even called at 1am because I had just gotten done working and they still sent pics that night. I know that my pup isn't going to last very long but they got her back to being perky and eating. Her kidney levels were better leaving after her stay in September than the were last June at my local vet. In short, if you care about your loved one you will put them in the hands of professionals. It is really important for me to publicly thank the staff at Veterinary Specialists & Emergency Services for taking excellent care of my baby, Bella.  She had a mass growing in her ear which made her prone to chronic ear infections that needed to be removed.  Dr. Hoffmann was professional, compassionate, courteous, and did a great job as Bella's surgeon.  He kept open communication with me and encouraged me to continue checking up on Bella to during her overnight stay at the hospital.  I called several times and the staff there were wonderful and gave me updates every time I called, which I really appreciated since I was so worried.  It has been nearly three weeks since Bella's surgery and she has recovered so well.  She is almost back to her old self, which makes me really happy that I got the surgery when I did.  I have no reservations about recommending others to go to VSES to find good care for their pets and truly thank everyone at VSES for taking care of my little princess! Never have I brought my pet to a vet where I wasn't allowed to be present when they 'check her vitals". I was there with my ill dog who was petrified and uncomfortable to be there in the first place, and then they pulled her away from me, practically dragging her because she was so scared. Ten minutes later they put me in a room where I was expecting her to be after getting her vitals checked, but she wasn't. They say the vet will bring her in when she comes in. After half an hour I ask the desk if there's a reason she can't be in the room with me while we're waiting for the vet.. "oh, let me check". Two minutes later the vet appears. Providing veterinary care 24/7 in emergency situations is expensive. These folks are the best in the business. They are very transparent regarding their fees. They do require a deposit and payment in full at the time of service completion. This is just good business and what needs to be done to ensure their doors stay open. Unfortunately, we've had to take several of our pets to AES over the past two years. Malcolm has been seen twice by Dr. Wilder. In the first instance, Malcolm consumed a large amount of prescription medications. In the second, he cut his paw on ice and required stitches. Dr. Wider also recently card for our Boston Terrier, Steve, who potentially required back surgery. We intended to have the procedure completed, but AES recognized marked improvement over night and determined that surgery was no longer the best course of action. In all of these situations, the veterinarians and staff that we encountered we're kind, thoughtful, and clearly dedicated to their work. Yesterday, we unexpectedly has to bring in our beloved calico, Barley. She had deteriorated quickly, over the course of a few hours. Eventually, we had to make the difficult decision to euthanize her. Our vet throughout this most recent visit was Dr. Dodge. Upon meeting, Dr. Dodge introduced herself and disclosed that she was Deaf and would need to read our lips. I immediately became concerned that communication would be a barrier during this difficult time. This was certainly not the case, however. Dr. Dodge quickly impressed is with her knowledge, compassion, thoroughness, and kind nature. She took care of Barley and us. We cannot thank her enough. So many complaints about prices and it's completely unwarranted. These are highly trained, highly educated employees using highly specialized equipment, and making themselves available around the clock. This is not your typical country vet. This stuff costs money. Any pet owner out there needs to get pet health insurance. We have it on our pets, it's extremely affordable. Cost shouldn't be your determining factor for treatment of your pet. Quality of life should be. The staff have been excellent. While people were hopefully enjoying the company of friends and family on Thanksgiving day, Dr. Flesher and her staff performed life saving surgery on our cat. Whenever we go here it's not a great day, we're going because there is an emergency. But the staff help calm you and help make sense of a stressful situation. Everyone from the front desk employees to the surgeons to the interns, everyone has been great. If I had my way I'd never have to visit the VSES again because that means my pets are healthy and happy. But that's not realistic. I understand other cases were much worse than mine but after hours of sitting and it only took you 20 minutes to check him out and say nothing was wrong is a bit ridiculous. Then he just gave me some pain medicine for him and that was it. $200 and four hours later. Took him to my vet as soon as I could the day after Christmas. Awful Double ear infection. So bad he had to get surgery on both ears. On four different medications. But the emergency vet "didn't see anything wrong". Will never come back and I'm beyond mad I wasted time and money and my bunny had to suffer two more days to get the proper care. Which only costs $380 for visit, surgery and medication.Read Less

If I could give these people half a star I would. They are money hungry, careless, and advantageous a$$holes that use heavy scare tactics during times of crisis to extort money out of their customers who are distraught over a sick or hurt pet. While I'm grateful that they have saved my pet, I am furious that a vet is willing to be careless while treating my pet just to push major surgery WITHOUT discussing the possible repercussions from such a surgery. Their carelessness has lead to further problems and complications that will last a lifetime for my pet. I'll leave any person who might need to bring their pet to this clinic with a few words of advice... Do not let them know you plan to transfer out until you're ready to do it, Do not let them scare you into unnecessary treatment wait for a second opinion from your own vet if possible, and most importantly DO NOT TRUST THESE PEOPLE they are not here to help you or your pet they ONLY want is your money. I have never had a worse experience at a veterinary office. I was told by my vet to bring him here for an ultrasound and sample of the fluid in a mass in his chest. The results indicated he had one of 2 things....both fatal and both untreatable. When asked if we wanted to send the fluid for testing we requested that it be held until we were given the opportunity to speak with his primary vet. Thank goodness we got a second opinion!! Our vet reviewed and noticed that he was never tested for a simple bacterial infection (treatable with antibiotics). She immediately gave him antibiotics and called over and asked his fluid be sent for culture. Turns out they DESTROYED the sample. Now in order to find out we need to have the sample retaken....O and I have to pay for another office visit, meds and sedation. Are you freaking kidding me!!! These people do not care about the well-being of your pet at all. I have never once seen an actual vet when I was there....only the "emergency coordinator". When they called for the results of the ultrasound they simply read the report from the paper (which would have been helpful if I went to med school). I had to use the diagnosis sheet to get on Google to understand what my cat actually has. Not only that but I was told my cat would be sent home with an appetite stimulant, however when I picked him up his discharge sheet said no medication. Had I not asked he would have not been given this. Clearly this vet (Dr. Wyer) had every intention of sending my cat home to die without a second thought. O and in case your reading this Dr....he is responding to his antibiotics and has been doing very well. I WILL be having a second sample drawn due to your incompetence and having it tested for an infection. Thanks for being the most horrible vet on the planet. Read Less

On Friday and Saturday, April 15 & 16 they treated my dog Bodoni for injuries sustained in a dog attack. I want to thank them for the calm, kind and compassionate care they took in his treatment. Unfortunately, Im sad to say Bodoni died the following morning from complications sustained in the attack. I know its cliché, but Bodoni truly was my best friend and he taught me what unconditional love is. I will miss his energy and love of play he ALWAYS wanted to play. Bodoni lived a fun-filled life and he will be dearly missed. His zest for life made me laugh and got me through the toughest times, which makes it even more difficult because he is not physically here to help me now. I am truly blessed to have had him in my life and humbled by the outpouring of love and support. Please pass along my gratitude to the rest of the team that took care of him that night. In particular, Dr. Kimberly Dodge and Isaac, who were very kind and compassionate, explaining everything and answering my questions. Read Less

I've had nothing but positive experiences with this hospital. We first had to go there on a weekend when one of our dogs was having sudden trouble getting up. We were seen promptly, and our dog was examined and given medications for a back injury, no unnecessary tests or treatments done, and I thought that the $150 bill was very reasonable for an emergency doctor visit. Since then, I've had frequent contact with Dr. Koch in internal medicine, as our other dog has developed late-stage kidney disease. Dr. Koch has been nothing but extremely knowledgeable, honest, and willing to communicate and explain all findings to me. I've been on the phone frequently with his staff, and everyone has been professional and helpful. Responses to my questions and recommendations have come quickly. It's been extremely tough for me to come to terms with what's going on with my dog, but I truly feel that everyone involved has had her best interests at heart and that we're doing all we can to keep her as healthy as we can for as long as we can-regardless of the road ahead, we've had quality time with her past what I thought we were going to get a few months ago. Sure, vet bills add up, but it's what I would expect for medical treatments, and the care and peace of mind are worth it! Read Less

I see a lot of poor reviews out here. I imagine the loss of a pet can cause some strong emotions. In fact I've experienced many of those losses in the past. Indeed the service and care my daughter's pet received here was expensive. But it was worth every penny once I saw the look on my daughter's face when her friend came home. The office staff and doctor were kind and understanding of the situation. They were caring when delivering the news and went the extra mile to ensure my family's needs were considered. I'm truly grateful for the attention they gave us. And all of this for a guinea pig, who has quickly become a member of our family. Thanks so much for everything! Read Less

Read Less

I took my dog here recently in extremely serious condition. I was seen immediately and my dog was triaged almost as soon as we walked into the door. I was let into a private room where within 10 minutes, the Veterinan came in an explained the gravity of my dogs condition. She answered all my questions and listed all my options. I felt very comfortable with their diagnosis and decided to humanely euthanize my beloved dog. After that decision, I was allowed to spend time with my dog for the last time. This place is very professional and fast acting. I would take my animal here again if an emergency arose. Read Less

I know my dog was just shoved in a crate and ignored for a 1/2 hour, terrified, when it would've set them back 10 seconds by bringing her to me. Pretty disgusted by this money mill. Read Less

We'd also like to recognize Lynette who provided us with ongoing support throughout the course of the evening. She made an awful day much more bearable. Read Less

Instead I'm just glad I have access to such a great group of talented caring professionals. Read Less

I just wanted to describe our positive experience. We brought our 13 year old cat who was suddenly extremely ill in after our vet was unable to get her in for an appointment though she was vomiting blood and incontinent. I walked in and they had my cat out of my arms to see what she needed in less than a minute. This was after waiting all day for our vet (past tense) to work her in. They provided information about cost and options throughout the experience. They did not pressure us at all to attempt treatment that had little chance of success. The bill was in the end less than they had forecast. I am very grateful for the care they provided, it was worth every penny. Read Less

I've had to be here for 2 of my ferrets. For my one ferret for the end of his life at the age of 13. The other after a household accident he's healing from in the first photo. The staff has been very compassionate and has given great care to my ferrets during these tough times. I know that a lot of these reviews are probably negative because people don't want to give a positive review to a place where their pet died but they gave them the best care under the circumstances. Mephistopheles, the younger ferret healed up great and I'm glad they saw him so quick and for a reasonable price. Read Less

Not a huge fan of this place, my dog had vomited and was coughing alot. I took him in and we were placed in a room for over 2 hours before anyone ever came in. I get things are busy and there are more important things that arise (I'm a nurse myself). The staff needs to keep people updated on what is going on. I paid $125 for a doc to look at my dog for 5 mins, tell me he should take carafate and pepcid for his belly ache and nothing for the cough? I call my vet this morning and bring him in, he is being treated for Kennel Cough. Wrong diagnosis and poor service. Read Less

Brought my bunny in at 11:45 on Christmas Eve because his ear was swollen shut. Nobody even looked at him until 3:00 in the morning. The vet even told us "I put him on the back burner because we had other patients come in" then went on to tell us he just thinks my bunny hit his ear on something which made it swollen.
