Dr. Howe is awesome! I take my 3 guinea pigs here and she always knows what she’s doing! I love that she cares for exotic pets and loves what she does. Awesome vet! They are pricy though. $75 for one visit just to bring my guinea pig in.. plus all the other fees/medications/etc. but will do what’s best for my piggies. Recommend this place!! Read Less

Very friendly staff! Bruce is my first puppy to take care of on my own so i wasn’t sure what shots he needed or how the whole vet visits worked but the whole staff was very helpful and very caring! I very much liked that a week after our visit they sent a card say thank u for trusting us with the care of Bruce and if we need anything please call ( little things like that matter!) overall very happy with my choice of this animal hospital! I've been taking my little man Noodles here for years..... he has two dental surgeries here and most recently has been treated for a major injury. 8 years ago was the last time i stepped in to this hell hole. I was 21 years old and my cat Wicket was 17. I grew up with her and loved her more than anything. Never having had to put down a pet before, when it was time i asked the Vet to simply walk me through what was going to happen and to let me know what was coming before it happened. He told me he was going to inject her with something to just relax her. I was expecting her to fall asleep. Well what happened was her tongue fell out of her mouth and she was dead. I was horrified. No warning. To this day i am haunted by that image and the bedside manner of the Vet. How Hard would it have been to tell me what could have happened or that tbe injection was her death. Dr. Howe, the vet techs and the entire staff at Hawkins Animal Hospital are great! We have been using them for a couple of years now and are could not be happier with them. We used to be clients at Sachem Animal Hospital and are sorry we did not switch vets earlier. From the moment you call Hawkins Animal Hospital whomever answers the phone is so nice and sweet. We have never waited more then 5 minutes in the waiting room. We always see Dr. Howe and she is the best. We recently had to make the difficult decision to put our beloved cat down. Dr. Howe did not rush us one bit to make the decision while we spent a long time in the room saying goodbye to our cat. They took a imprint of our cats paws without us knowing  when they took him in the back to put a IV in him and when were we leaving there with our hearts heavy they presented us with "Paws of Remembrance". A beautiful mold of his paws prints with his name on it. We will forever treasure this. We also received a beautiful sympathy card from them today. BEWARE this is the ABSOLUTE WORST VET you could ever take your pet to. If you love and care for your pet I URGE YOU, DO NOT STEP FOOT IN THIS PLACE!!! The office looks clean and nice enough until you actually deal with the employees. During my first visit I not only waited an excessive amount of time, even having an appointment scheduled but as soon as the vet came in, she was immediately pulled out due to an emergency with an irate customer in the waiting room causing police to be called. Being a patient person I let it go and continued to wait some more. After doing a few tests and an $800 bill later, I left with a $20 antibiotic and was told my dog is fine. If that was not a negative enough experience, fast forward to about a year later when I need to take my dog to an animal hospital due to an emergency and need his records... WHAT A NIGHTMARE!! Clearly in an emergency, these records are needed right away, obviously this staff does not care. I was told after I signed a release it would take up to 24 hours for the vet to review and approve the request. I explained it was an emergency and needed right away but was told there is only one vet on staff (clearly not true by all of the previous complaints about different vets). This staff was anything but helpful and made what was already a stressful and worrisome time much more difficult due to having to argue with their incompetent staff (the woman was nice but clearly had no power, then a man got on the phone very rudely thinking he is the be all, end all). AVOID THE HASSLE AND RIP OFF!!! If you're from the area and need a nice and reliable vet, go to BEST FRIENDS, its only 5 minutes away. Read Less

The Vet at Hawkins Animal Hospital told me that my dog had a heart problem and needed an MRI to determine the best course of treatment well I had them do the MRI  they charged me $1200.00 and turns out my dog did not have anything wronge with her heart, they just stole my money as far as I am concerned. Never again would I bring any on my dogs there and I would strongly advise everyone to stay clear of this place. Read Less

Dr. Howe, the vet techs and the entire staff are the absolute best at Hawkins Animal Hospital! I found Dr. Howe at the Hawkins street fair almost 2 years ago and the minute I met her I felt comfortable and trusted her. I asked her a dozen questions (and probably made her crazy) and she didn't hesitate to answer every single one of them.  Dr. Howe also explained that she does Reiki, on her patients and explained how it works, I was totally amazed and intrigued. I started bringing my 10 year old Maltese to Hawkins Animal Hospital and Dr. Howe became very in tuned with my baby so when he started to act unusual she immediately asked me a couple of questions and recommended that we do some testing, she said she thought it was Diabetes and she was correct!! I was totally devastated, and freaked out, but with her calm, soft and gentle demeanor she ultimately calmed me down and explained how we were going to get him back on track. I am so happy to say that with much help from everyone at Hawkins my baby is doing incredibly better!!!! They are all always professional, helpful, caring and never rushes you whenever you need them!! Her gentle approach is such a comfort when you are there with a sick animal. She is sweet, knowledgable, and clearly LOVES her patients. I stopped going here because every time I'd go, there would be a different vet taking care of my kitty. The last time I was there, I dealt with a woman vet who wanted to remove my male cat's penis because he had crystal blockage. She also wanted to perform a multitude of unnecessary tests giving me an estimate in the thousands. I decided to get a second opinion and went to Dr Dring at Just cats and she took excellent care of him, laughed when I said Hawkins vet wanted to remove his penis and do a bunch of testing. She fixed him up wonderfully for 3 days and only charged me $500. Note: my male kitty is still perfectly male and fully in tact and hasn't had a blockage since. I won't return to Hawkins Hospital ever again. And I hope that quack of a vet I had there isn't allowed to be a vet anymore. I don't recall her name, unfortunately. I give 3 stars because there were times I had nice experiences with the staff and other vets. Read Less

Paws down, the BEST Animal Hospital Around! I couldn't have picked a better Vet for my Puppy Casie! The most knowledgable, caring, patient, loving and friendly staff you could ask for! Unfort, my Puppy was attacked by a pit bull yesterday, but everyone kept us calm and re-assured us that she will be okay...Guess what? She's doing much better! Dr. Howe and her staff saved our dogs life yesterday. She drove our precious Goldie to the animal emergency hospital in her own car with her staff and stayed with her until they stabilized her. They were so caring and amazing when I had to go through one of the most devastating losses in my life. Dr. Howe did all she could for my beloved Snowball. The heartbreaking decision was made on a Friday afternoon close to closing time and they let me bring him in and didn't rush us. They even gave us a keepsake paw print and sent us a sympathy card signed by the whole staff!!! Although I have been going to Hawkins Animal hospital for 20 years, it has gone down hill fast. I brought my cat, Bella, in a few weeks ago because she was throwing up. They took a urine sample and called to say it was lost. Brought her back for another, we get a call saying urine sample came out fine, call us if you need anything else. Well, yes, she is still throwing up. I then called and they proceeded to ask me what I wanted to do. It would have been nice for them to give me what the options were instead of having to pull the information from them. Yesterday I made an appointment for my other cat, Callie, had to change it to an earlier time, but they forgot to change it in the computer. After taking time off work, now they want me to make another appointment. I would not recommend Hawkins Animal Hospital to anyone. Read Less

Dr. Howe and her staff used to be great, I don't know what happened, but they're all about money now!  I went in for my puppy's three year Rabies shot, I was a few months late and she gave her a one year shot instead, without telling me!  Then she demanded fecal tests every six months and to prepay it (usually once a year). We had a disagreement over it and I refused to pay $40 for something I wasn't doing at that time.  The person at the desk said "some people come back in a year to do it"!  Well I'm not giving her cash flow with out a test!  Also six days later my girl had a major seizure and the vet left for the day and they wouldn't get a hold of her!  I changed vets and received a letter discharging me!  If you don't care about money go there!  I care more about my pets, then unnecessary testing!Dr. Howe, I was NOT abusive to anyone on your staff, I was told you were unavailable when Maggie had her first seizure and NO BODY from your hospital even called to see if she was ok!  I was supposed to receive a three year Rabies and Parvovirus/distemper shots and only received a one year Rabies and three year Parvo/Distemper, and was supposed to receive a refund according to your office manager for that and never did!  I was clear what Maggie needed when I made the appointment.  I was not going to prepay for a fecal that I "had a year to do"!Just because we disagreed about the fecal didn't give you the right to NOT respond during an emergency when you were the last vet to see her!  NOT practicing good patient relations!!!! All of the staff at this hospital are amazing.. They took such great care of my cat Stormy when he needed an emergency surgery last week. I couldn't be more thankful for Dr. Howe and how she stayed an extra two hours just to have everything in line for his surgery the next day. My dog Charlie has been my beautiful companion for 18 long years. He started crying out in pain at 4:00 am in the morning. Nothing we did could console him. He was unable to stand or sit , eat or drink it was heartbreaking. I walked into Hawkins Ave Hospital with my poor little friend having never met them before. I can't begin to express the kindness I encountered. Charlie was greeted with love and compassion as if he were an old friend of theirs. It was rather obvious that Charlie was suffering greatly and it was in his best interest to euthanize him. Heartbreaking experience that was eased by the gentleness of the loving veterinarian. She put Frankincense and Vetiver essential oils on his head to make him calm and spoke with such genuine kindness to both me and my Charlie. I would recommend this practice hands down. The fact that they are all trained in Reiki (a Japanese relaxation technique) can be felt in the air. Loving Loving place I can't say enough about them. Read Less

Brought a lost dog in to check for chip to help find the dog's owner/home. we were informed we were getting there at just the time they were closing for the day, the staff was all extremely kind, patient, pleasant, informative, and helpful. the dog we had with us, though not ours, loved it there he didnt want to leave. i cant speak for services but as for level comfort (for human & animal) and energy and staff experience, I was surprised at how well they run their center. A great place. Smells and is very clean. The staff, from the receptionist to the doctor, are all very nice and very animal friendly ( something you don't always find at a vet which is shocking). We brought our 12 year old doxie in who was a bit afraid but Dr. Howe was so soft spoken and calm with her, even let her sniff the stethoscope before she listened to her heart and chest. I brought my dog here for an exam and to check out her ear infection. I made an appointment for 9am. When we were in the room the doctor was very rude and was rushing because she had a busy day ahead of her. If you were too booked to see my dog then why even have me come in for an appointment?? My dog was nervous and was shaking her head. The doctor was criticizing my dog for not staying still, obviously she has an ear infection and is uncomfortable. You are the Vet and I'm sure you've seen dogs that have been uncooperative but don't be rude to mine. My dog had hair in her ears that needed to be plucked, they brought her to the back room to try and get it out. They came out not 5 minutes later and told me they can't do it, they would have to sedate her to get it out. She continued to tell me that she can't do it today because she was so busy with appointments. They gave me a quote for almost $300 to get all of these vaccines, tests, and to sedate and treat her. I said no thank you and left.A week later I brought my dog to another vet to see what they say. They plucked her ears just find with no sedation and I paid half of what I would have at Hawkins. I would not recommend this Vet. I was there only this one time but with my experience I would never go back. Read Less

My doberman was misdiagnosed with epilepsy and medicated with anti-seizure medication for a year. She had a case of whip worms that spread to her brain. She seizured horribly one day and had to be put to sleep. The response they gave over the misdiagnosis was pretty much, "Whoops! Guess we killed her!" Don't go here if you love your pet. Read Less
