We ABSOLUTELY love Dr. Star. We have a french bulldog puppy who gets so excited when you go to him. Speaking from a dogs point of view , he is fantastic with them! My dog is so comfortable with him and I believe it truly is because he knows how much he loves dogs. They NEVER have pushed anything on us, and by that I mean products or procedures. He always answers my questions and educates us on what he thinks is best for our pup. Although, in the end leaves it up to us to decide what we want to do. He has a very laid back behavior, and never yelled at us for thinking a certain way. I'm sure though if you were really treating the animal wrong that would be different just because I can tell he really does care. He has a 24 hr emergency line that we have actually used once and it was one am on a Saturday , in which he answered immediately . He never was mad that we called , never gave the impression that we bothered him and he even called back the next morning to check up. Lastly , his staff deserves just as much praise . The girls that work there either at the desk or with the vet are amazing. My dog Buddy a Boston has been going to Dr Star from a puppy Dr Star helped him when he had a very bad cough. It is just a little to far for me to drive with traffic and bad weather so I had to find an other Vet closer. I hope only they are as good as St James and Dr Star was for my dog. They don't care about your pet, and so unprofessional. My cat doesn't eat, and breath so heavy, but the doctor said he looks fine, everything is normal, and threw me a $730 bills for a lot unnecessary tests, like AIDS and leukemia, which just did one month ago. I would like to start by saying people who say that this doctor is nice and well mannered is an absolute outrage he has no bedside manner he's nasty overpriced and when I brought my dog in the have staples removed after being spayed I told the doctor that I noticed her ear was all red he told me he couldn't check on her ear I had to make another appointment and pay an extra $69 just to be seen after paying $535 for the whole spaying process I do realize that people need to make money to live but when you're a vet I really feel that you should put the animal first not worry about the almighty dollar. When they call the next day to check on the ear I informed them how upset I was and hurt that a doctor would do that and they told me you're sorry I feel that way but there's nothing they can do. They also strong-arm you into buying heart guard from them saying that my health care plan for my new puppy is not an effect if I'm not buying from them which to me is total bull crap considering the price is three times as much as if you get it online. Do yourself a favor if you haven't used his vet yet check around and find another one he is not worthy of your pet and he doesn't really care about it he only cares about making money. After reading these reviews I was compelled to post my experience with St. James Animal Hospital. First let me say this if your a pet owner and you aren't aware that they are lives that come with a anticipated cost of care then you entered into it without doing YOUR homework, don't blame a business who was not involved in your decision making process to become a pet owner. With that out the way having purchased my baby Bonsai from Shake a Paw and following up here was a better experience than anticipated. Yes my puppy needed some measures of intervention but Dr. Star and his staff made every visit pleasant for me. Just as we raise our children and will experience bumps on their growing pains, it is a relief to know I have vet services to cushion the blows. My German Shepherd pup has made great strides under St. James let no ill intention of a review deter you. Never in my life would I go to this place again. My wife brought our 2 yr old dog there for a urinary track infection and left with a 853.89 bill. And the craziest thing about it is they did not even do the proper test to diagnose a urinary track infection. Read Less

Dr. Star is very thorough and thoughtful. Explains everything he is doing. Answers any questions you might have. Him and his staff always get back to you. They keep you informed of any tests, etc. They are compassionate and love the animals. We went with our first 2 dogs when we moved to St. James. And they were very thoughtful and considerate upon their passing due to cancer. Although I never had a problem with the Dr. or staff, I always thought he was ridiculously over priced. In October I was charged $500 for a well checkup & shots. I started pricing around to find they are 3x more expensive than most offices!!! I was going back because they accepted Care Credit which they no longer do. All I have to show for it is a maxed out credit card!!! Went to a different Vet today for an ear infection and with medications paid $89 CASH!! only 3 stars because there was no big problem, but felt I had to say how nice the staff and doctor was to us.Brought in our new puppy who was having a poop issue.Leave it at that one of the techs came in and spent a good amount of unrushed time to discuss caring for the little guy and answered all questions. I had been going here for the last three years with my dog. Until today. I waited 45 minutes for an annual checkup. I was waiting alone at first. Twenty minutes after I came in, a gentleman with his dog walked in and was seen 5 minutes later. His appointment was at the  same time as mine. I was early and he was late. When I finally got in to see Dr. Star I pointed this out to him. He shrugged. No explanation. No apology. I asked him why I waited and the other person didn't. He replied ' I don't know the situation. I just take care if the animals. Really??? The animals don't pay you, the owners do. As such, you need to have better customer skills. He then told me that I had a bad attitude. I told him I would be taking my records, my dog, business and $$ elsewhere. It is worth noting that he was not educated in the US, but rather some small school in the Caribbean. Stay away, stay far, far away... If I could give this place a negative number I would, such disrespect to their clients and the girls in the front have childish attitudes should not be around animals or people. Been going here for a little over a year now. Everyone's always thorough and nice. They seem happy to answer our questions and accommodate to us and our pup. They're a little pricey but vet care isn't usually cheap. Parking can be a little difficult at certain times, but overall I would definitely recommend saint james animal hospital Read Less

I recently got a new puppy and the pet store referred us to Dr Star. Having other dogs, and having had expierience visiting many other veterinarians and animal hospitals over the years I have to say I am very pleased. The doctor and staff are all very nice and helpful and efficient. Reading the other reviews I'm shocked about what some of the others said. Especially with the pricing.. In general veterinarians are not cheap so if you can't handle paying the bill don't purchase a pet. I've been to animal hospitals much pricier. I would recommend this st James animal hospital to any of my friends and I will start taking my older dogs here as well. Read Less

do not go here. They have me discounts because I got my puppy from peebles pet shop. But it's no discount at all. My dog had parasites and they said the medication was free but every time they test the stool it's 50 bucks and this is my 6th time testing it not to mention all the other costs. They're not treating my dog properly just so they can make money off him. I asked if I could just get the meds with no stool testing because I knew he was still sick because he had diarrhea, his hair is course and he's coughing and they told me no because they have to no what parasite it is... Wasn't that what the other 6 tests were for? They don't care that my puppy has been sick for 4 months while this parasite sucks the life out of him. They'd rather make money. I bought a puppy a few weeks ago from a breeder and he gave me a five year health warranty and a free office visit with St. James Animal Hospital. I was told of a prior condition and when I went into Dr. Starr he told me it was no big deal and won't cause any health issues. I right away loved the staff and Dr. Starr. Everyone there loves my puppy so much and I have only been there a few times and they already know my puppy. I do not feel over charged and if anything I feel like this is a very affordable vet. I have been using another vet who wants $15 more for an office visit fee on my other dogs. I can always call this vet with any questions and all of them give me a good response and also they give you Dr. Starr's cell phone number in case of an emergency which I love!! I will be DEFINITELY using then for my puppy for as long as I can! Read Less

after reading the 2 reviews that are on here i was kinda worried about going here. i too bought a puppy from peebles pet shop and i wanted to use the health warrany. the warrany was exatly what the paper the pet shop gave me. if you read the paper it does not say the whole appt is free is says the drs exam is free. along with a parvo shot. the wait in the waiting room was a little long but once i got into see dr starr i understood why he was very complete with his exam he took his time you could see he acually liked his job. he explained everything he was doing. yes there was a charge when i left but that was to cover the flea and tick prevenative as well as the heartworm prevenative which any responsible pet owner would know that is necessary. my puppy did have a parasite but after reasearching it i saw that all dogs and puppies have it and under stress it can act up. as a repeat pet owner anyone who was expecting a perfect puppy is better off with a stuffed animal. St James Animal Hospital are the biggest shysters on Long Island. Stay away from them. Let me tell you about my story. I bought a puppy from Peebles Pet Shop. My puppy had kennel cough and parasites. They sent me to St.James. My so called free 1 year free health medical warranty after one visit cost me $150.00. Our family wanted a perfect puppy but it turned into a dark nightmare, thanks to this crew. My suggestion: stay away from these rip-off artists. Read Less

This place is a rip, totaly over priced and Dr. Starr is out to get your money. There is no reason for these people to charge the amount they charge and there are 'fees' for everything.
