We visited Dr. Mueller for the worst reason, to put our pet down. The compassion, professionalism and tact she and the staff used in our sad moment was very helpful.

I should have posted this review years ago... I went to see the dogs up for adoption but I wasn't completely interested in the breeds available that day. Their staff made to feel guilty for not being interested in the breeds and were pressuring me in to adoption. If someone is not interested they should not be pressured. They also should not be treated like they don't care about animals. I've had 3 cats that lived long and loved lives. The staff here seem to only care about money... Read Less

They have been great for me and my dog Kaya. My husband and I actually adopted her from there in 2010 when they were Scottsville Veterinary Adoptions. Kaya developed a cyst about six to eight months ago on her back leg that ended up bursting one day. She was bleeding all over and I couldn't get it to stop. I called them up and I was able to get us right in. They performed emergency surgery that afternoon on her and she is healing well. We had to make a couple more trips due to her stiches ripping out, no fault of theirs. Due to the size, location of the cyst and the fact my dog is very spastic they wouldn't stay in. They tried all they could but eventually we just had to let it heal without stiches. Even tried some Torazadone to try to calm her down, yeah not her...lol The staff is always friendly and call Kaya and myself by name when we show up for our appointments. The vet, Dr Mueller, has been great through all this with us. UPDATE: Kaya had to go in for another surgery to remove more cysts. Again they were fantastic. The staff commented on how they love Kaya, she will just sit in the back in her cage and just watch people while they are working. Read Less

Nothing on the S.P.A. website says people who already own dogs must bring them to adopt a pup or that they'll refuse to let you adopt if you own un-altered animals. I lost four hours and am heart-broken because of their false advertising. After I was hung up on repeatedly, I finally got through to an employee. I was told to "HURRY!" if I hoped to adopt today because the puppies were "flying out the door." I explained that I was more than an hour away, and we'd hoped to bring the whole family (including our current dogs) tomorrow. I was told the puppies would not be held 24 hours, and I should come by myself now. 90 minutes later, I was allowed to meet/play with the puppy before anyone who works at the clinic actually spoke to me. I became instantly attached--he is precious. I went back to the desk and saw two families sign for and take their dogs home with them. I stepped up for my turn, said I'd be glad to take the little guy I'd fallen in love with, and was told I couldn't consider taking him today because I have dogs. I asked why I wasn't told over the phone that my dogs had to be present for an adoption, and the woman working said she must have made a mistake (it was said with a shrug, not an apology--completely unacceptable when so much time had been wasted). When she found out the dogs we adopted three years ago are whole, she was horrified. Though she kept correcting herself that she /shouldn't/ be calling me stupid, her bias about neutering made it clear I'd never be allowed to adopt from this shelter. They demand pups be neutered quickly (which means many are being altered before 6 mos.). If I'd known that this rescue, like so many others, is unwilling to speak to families on a case-by-case basis, I never would've spent more than a few minutes at their site; I wouldn't have spent three-plus hours in the car today; I wouldn't have wept all the way home over the little boy I fell in love with will never get to grow into a real dog. He'll be given to someone who allows him to be mutilated and (if they want him today) is a first-time dog owner with no knowledge of a dog's physiology or mental development. I guess I could have lied on my paperwork and claimed to be a first-time dog owner who "promised" to mutilate her new baby... as the S.P.A didn't check any references for the people in line ahead of me, I have to imagine it would have worked. So, why the long post about how angry I am? Because people who advocate spay/neuter at all costs say they can't imagine why someone would "ignore the benefit" of avoiding unwanted puppies, but they've never done any reading about the cons of neutering (especially early). Puppies neutered before they're fully grown have their physiology changed forever. Their limbs grow too long for their bodies. Their skulls don't grow enough. Their brains stop developing, and they never become "adult" dogs. Yes, it's work to be sure my dogs are supervised and well cared for, but that's part of having dogs. The mild inconvenience of being a responsible pet owner who keeps her dogs from wandering the neighborhood is far preferable to knowing that I put an animal through a painful surgery to make my own life easier. I know there are too many unwanted puppies in this world--that's why I was looking to help one of them and add to our family. I have owned a dozen dogs in my lifetime (full disclosure: some "belonged" to my folks as I was growing up). None have been neutered. None have made puppies. All have been happy and healthy. I guess I'll keep looking for an "accidental" litter to be posted on CL--or pay into the puppy-mill system for a mutt that's called by some trendy-pushed-together-fake-breed-name--or drive to that high-kill shelter in TN on my own to save a puppy before it's euthanized or turned over to a northern rescue that puts its ideals before the health of the animals it serves... but I can't possibly give my money to this for-profit "shelter" with its poor service and absolute disregard for the development of the animals they house. We see the techs and they have been nothing but wonderful. The girls at the front desk are great . Seems that some have had problems, for that I'm sorry. No place is perfect, not even the mighty Lollypop. We had major issues with a dog we adopted from there. Them losing their status was purely political and ridiculous. The place isn't a mess and the people there truly care for these animals. It's always busy, so the naysayers really have no effect on their intent to bandwagon the hate for this place. Read Less

DO NOT ADOPT FROM THIS FACILITY. If I could give this adoption agency AND vet clinic 0 stars, I would. We adopted our dog from Scottsville as a 14 month old. They stated "everything" was included in the adoption fee; neutering and vaccines. When we showed up for the neutering appt., the receptionist was extremely rude and stated that the rest of his vaccines would cost $180. Fine. Just recently, we moved to SC and took him a vet here for a wellness check. Turns out, he never received his PUPPY vaccines and tested positive for heart worms, which the vet believes he had when we adopted him. Scottsville has a reputation for adopting out dogs that are sick. Please, put your money to an organization that truly cares about animals. Read Less

People need to remember, the animals come from HIGH KILL shelters. These kinds of shelters put several dogs/cats in the same kennel/cage. They, also, aren't going to test these animals, let alone treat them. Yes, some/most of the animals, who are rescued by Scottsville, come "perfect", but, some don't. I adopted a puppy from Scottsville who came up from Georgia. She came with kennel cough. I wasn't surprised, I expected her to have "something", considering where she came from. I took her back to Scottsville. They treated her and me with compassion and great care. They got down on the floor and had her all wiggly, during our visit. We went back for a follow up, and she was completely healthy. This was three years ago, in May. She has grown to be the youngest of my three very spoiled dogs. She is happy, healthy, and "spirited". I wouldn't want her any other way! My sister was so impressed by my Daisy (named Melody when I adopted her)and the experience I had, she adopted a puppy, two years ago, who came from Tennessee. She had the same experience and treatment as me. We both are VERY happy with our additions. As far as the bad comments of the condition of the shelter, no shelter is perfect. Take a walk through Lollipop. I have. They have, sometimes, two or three, as many as four dogs in the same kennels. There are dried feces on the floors. There are quarantined dogs... I never saw volunteers in the kennels playing with the puppies, like my sister and I saw, when we picked out her Jennie, at Scottsville. (Jennie was even one of the featured dogs in one of the contests) It goes without saying, I enjoyed my experiences with these people. I can't adopt any more animals because of where I live. If I could, I wouldn't hesitate to come back here. My sister may be back. She just lost her dog, adopted before we were aware Scottsville existed. When/if she's ready to adopt again. She said she will come back to Scottville.Read Less

I adopted my dog, Duncan from Scottsville in February of 2016. When we brought him home, he showed signs of kennel cough. We brought him back to the hospital and the care was excellent. My dog got the pills he needed, at no cost to us. After a few days he cleared up, and his personality began to shine. This lovable little boy soon needed an equally active dog sibling, so my family and I came back to Scottsville in search of our next companion. Coincidently, the dog we took home was in the same kennel as Duncan. Daisy (previously Jan) is the most wonderful addition to our family. Adoption staff took amazing care of us for both adoptions, leaving me nothing but joy with my two dogs. I'd recommend this rescue to anyone, including my brother who went and adopted a shepherd puppy not too long ago. Wonderful experiences with great people. Please remember that these dogs come from many situations, not always living happy or healthy lives. Rescue is always a risk, sick dogs, just like people, can go undetected in certain situations. Every animal should get the opportunity to live in a home where they are loved and spoiled. Thank you Scottsville for helping match my family with the best dogs!Read Less

Over the past several years my family has adopted three dogs from scottsville and have never had any issue. All three dogs were healthy and happy. One of which lived 18 years with NO health issues. What people need to understand is ANY animal can get sick. Any cold can turn into something worse. To blame a shelter that has only every wanted to save animals and give them a good life is ridiculous. They take in animals from high kill shelters to give them another chance at finding a loving home.. that sounds like a rescue to me. It's awful that this organization has gotten a bad rep over a few situation that can happen with any shelter. I used to volunteer there and the animals are constantly taken out of cages for walks and play times with other animals. I will continue to recommend scottsville to anyone looking to adopt a loving dog from an amazing place.Read Less

Had a concern with health of the latest initially and they saw us 2x with no cost to us. Turned out to be nothing. I hope they take care of all customers/pets as they did us. Always seemed clean whenever we were there. Passionate volunteers walking dogs etc. They put a lot of effort bringing pets from southern states...cant imagine its simply for profit...or ill will. Hoping its a very small percentage of bad experiences...they adopt out a lot of pets... I hope things get straightened out and they can continue to find homes for pets...thats what it should be about.Read Less

I paid $450 for adoption fees which say it includes spay/neutering, lol yeah right. i brought them in and was told I had to pay for pre-blood work and extra for anesthesia, which they needed for procedure, (should that not be included?). Also when I brought them for their 2 week check up, they got booster shots (another $50). which I had to pay for since they didn't give it to them when I initially adopted them ( which would have been included). when my little boy got his shot he jumped like it hurt him and 2 months later still has a small squishy lump where they injected him. oh, my story is not over. when I got the kittens I was told they had been medicated for ring worm because of the mother cat, but were cleared when I picked up.....well now my 9 yr old cat has ring worm. after paying 120 to find that out, (at a actually good vet place), guess what I have ring worm.... We adopted our puppy, Ralph, from Scottsville in mid-December. Overall it was a good experience. I had gone in thinking that I would get an older dog (since my husband and I are in our mid-50s) but didn't really "click" with any of the ones we saw. Then we saw this 7-month-old puppy and decided to adopt him. I will say that the first month or so of having Ralph was a challenge. We had a dog for 10 years (she died in 2014) but adopted her when she was 18 months old, so had never cared for a puppy this young. He was so high energy (and also needed house training) that we weren't sure we were going to be able to keep him. However we didn't want to give up on him and felt it was our decision to adopt him and we needed to hang in there. Now we're very glad we did. He is a sweet dog and is working out fine. But had they had better adoption counseling, we might not have taken him home (when we were there, midweek, there was only one person on duty in the adoption area, and he had his hands full bringing us dogs, finding their paperwork, and also answering phones and dealing with walk-ins.) We didn't bring Ralph back there for his 2-week checkup as we preferred to bring him to our own vet, who is closer to our home, even though we had to pay for the visit. She gave him a clean bill of health and he hasn't had any health issues. (Another reason I didn't want to bring him to Scottsville for his checkup was that we stopped into the veterinary area and it had a strong "pet" odor in the waiting room. I know from long experience with our vet that this does not have to be the case. It was off-putting and gave the impression that they were less than thorough about cleaning. Maybe it was just a one-time situation but it wasn't very nice.) Overall I don't see any reason to caution against looking here for a dog, but be sure you do your homework on what kind of dog would fit in best with your family, since you may not get much help on that score from the staff. If quality of diagnosis and clarity of information is your priority, I could not speak any more highly of Stephen Berghash. I took my cat to him because I wanted to fix him if reasonably possible, to minimize his suffering if not. What recent, expensive testing failed to reveal at other hospitals, this man found with his bare hands, in minutes. Its easy to throw cash at the problem in hopes of delaying the pain. It's hard to put our own discomfort aside and focus on the animal's quality of life, in an impossible situation. If he hurts your feelings, take it as evidence of his compassion for the animals.. you are probably confusing your pain with that of your pet. This is a place that facilitates adoption of needy animals. Arguably, anyone that fails to see the resource problems inherent in an effort of this nature is probably not cognitively qualified to write a public 'review' of these selfless people. Read Less

Read Less
