What a disheartening phone call with Smith Ridge recently. My 16 yr old dog has been going to Smith Ridge since a puppy. I called with an emergency in that my dog was having stomach issues that had moved to the next level from just loose stool to throwing up. Having been such a long term client of the practice and Dr Ruskin's I had hoped they would agree to squeeze him for a consult and advice. Dr Ruskin was booked with no openings so I asked that she be made aware of my concerns and worries and despite knowing my concerns she did not find any time to see my sick boy. Instead, she recommended (through the receptionist) that I take him to an emergency vet for IV fluids. Keep in mind she had not seen him or even spoke to me about him, yet recommended this. He had been drinking water at least twice a day so I had no worries about dehydration I just wanted her advice and input on his stomach issues that seemed to be getting worse. After convincing the, not very compassionate receptionist, to ask the Dr. again if she would see him I received a call to once again be told she has no time to see him and I could see the other doctor in the office under an "emergency visit" but that Dr Ruskin ultimately believes (sight unseen) that he'll need fluids and that could not be done at Smith Ridge because as the receptionist reminded me multiple times "they close at 5". It was somewhat very surprising to me that Dr Ruskin could not find any time to see such a long time client in distress and was fine with sending me off to some emergency vet for IV fluids.  I can't imagine all the pets she was seeing that day were in distress as my boy was so why not find 15 mins to make me feel better by just taking a look. All my 'scheduled' visits in the past with Dr. Ruskin have been great but it was in this emergency that it became clear to me that any Dr who would not find time to see or speak to the owner of a sick dog is not the doctor I want my boy seeing.  Fortunately I found Dr Willimann of Veterinary Care of Mount Pleasant who was happy to squeeze my boy in, even though she was also booked all day, and gave me wonderful advice (btw Pumpkin is a miracle food for bad stomach) and medicine.  No IV needed. I took my dog to  Dr. Marty Goldstein (this was awhile back)   and he hardly even looked at him but he insisted  on showing me  a photo book  of all  his "miracle cured" animals. That should have tipped me off.  But he played on my emotions and I allowed him   to operate on my dog.  After the operation he admitted that he was not a board certified surgeon and told me he had almost cut a tendon in my dog's  leg and was afraid his leg would be useless.  I almost fell over. It was not cut -  but thousands of dollars later my dog passed away. After a vet visit, my dog  was always in great distress. Marty  would Inject something Into to his leg - he never  told me exactly what it was-  and It bothered me that I was never allowed into the room when they administered the shots. I loved my dog so much- he was a very special animal- and I highly regret bringing him to Marty Goldstein who really only cares about lining his pockets, in my opinion.  I would never recommend him to anyone. Honestly, I'm not sure what to make of this place. I found their help average, minimal, and extremely expensive. They had very few recommendations about what to do to tackle my dog's cancer. Just a few supplements that they had in stock and then vague but not clear recommendations for key supplements that I learned about outside of them. There are key supplements given to dogs who have the kind of cancer that my babe did, but SmithRidge only kind of mentioned one of them in passing when we were there.Overall, they were responsive when I called to talk with Dr. Ruskin, but advice and what to do was hard to come by and even unclear. For example, whether or not to do Vitamin C therapy. I could have gotten it 6 weeks prior than I ultimately did, but the Dr. made it sound like it wouldn't be helpful - only to then say weeks later that it would be and she had wanted my boy to come in right away. After the Vitamin C the Dr cheered how my dog would be around for a long time - no other proactive things recommended. My babe only lived 3 months after his cancer diagnosis.I'm also suspect about how much more knowledgeable they are than regular vets. All along I thought my dog's cancer was caused by mold exposure that we both experienced. My primary vet did nothing when I had asked months prior, about proactively doing something for my dog because I had become so sick from the mold - surely it was doing something to him too. (I had even seen a major change in his stool.) When I brought this to the attention of SmithRidge the Dr. told me that it was highly unlikely that the mold had anything to do with the cancer. (We were exposed to mold in my air conditioner from June-August. I found my dog's cancer lump in late November. Other holistic vets have since explained to me that there's always a triggering event - a final mix in the cocktail that causes cancer. The mold was severe and oppressive - it was one hell of a triggering event.)I returned to SmithRidge for Vitamin C. And my third visit was because I thought I had overdosed my dog on an herbal supplement. When I arrived the team was actually worried about my dog's stability and immediately put him on oxygen. I asked the Dr. point blank if it was time to let him go. She told me not yet - there was a chance that we could stabilize him and sent me to the nearby vet hospital for a blood transfusion. (Meanwhile I incurred a $1200 bill at SmithRidge seemingly in a matter of 20 minutes.)At the hospital the staff vet took me aside and told me that indeed my dog was in such deteriorated condition that it was really only fair to let him go. I assumed this vet had spoken with Dr. Ruskin at SmithRidge and that this was her recommendation as well because SmithRidge had made it sound like they were already in communication with the hospital and that the two were keeping each other up to date. It wasn't until several hours later when I was still torturing myself about what to do, that the vet at the hospital told me that she had not had the conversation with Dr. Ruskin and that Dr. Ruskin was on a half day and had already left. I was left there to trust the western medicine doctor - many of others had already failed us before and Ruskin and I had just discussed this before I took him to the hospital. In addition, the vet at the hospital said that Ruskin was under the impression that I wasn't ready to let him go and that's why she sent me for a transfusion. (The hospital vet thought he wouldn't last more than a day or a week max with a transfusion.)Essentially, I was left to navigate a very difficult situation with no input from SmithRidge only moments after they charged my card $1200. -- My awesome creature is gone. SmithRidge should have been checking in with me directly or provided clear instructions about what to do at the vet hospital. They could have been clearer in their communication overall and as the go to's for dog cancer, I would expect them to have more ideas for care. No one did anything proactive about possible anemia, or trouble clotting blood, etc. And these were key factors in the deterioration of my dog's health. I would expect this place to be proactive and not so reactive. There are other holistic vets out there and when I get my next dog, I won't be going back to SmithRidge. They seem very good at taking money while providing little advice. $1200 just moments before my dog was given the prescription to be put to sleep - and the hospital then charged an additional $650. AND to this day I've never even received a call from them about tests they had sent out or to acknowledge that they know that my dog is gone. Seems like someone was taking advantage of the situation. I finally found a vet who speaks my kind of language.  If you are looking for a true holistic vet, this is the place to go. The staff and doctor were so sweet to our puppy giving him all sorts of attention. Everyone was super nice! We had an appointment with our previous dog with Dr. Marty, but he passed three days before his visit. I really think if we got him there sooner, they would haved saved him. They are devoted to treating the root cause of illness and not masking the problem with a bunch of toxins.  The hour and a half drive was well worth it! Read Less

For those who found their reception indifferent, my advice is to hang in there.  I have been taking my 12 year old female cocker spaniel to Dr. Shane at Smith Ridge for over a year.  Initially, the environment was so unfriendly I wasn't sure whether it was personal or not.  Over time I guess I passed whatever milestones and today I am greeted with friendliness and always treated with respect.  The treatment is always supplements first.  My Taffy has slimmed down, become relaxed and less aggressive even around people I know she doesn't care for, seems to have fewer allergies and in general is a healthier dog since she's been going to Smith Ridge and Dr. Shane. Before you call them, read this. These people dropped the ball and then refused to bend their rules to help my dog.  They do not care.  Made and appointment for phone consult - Goldstein is 600+ just to talk to him, one of the other vets is $360 - went with one of the other since Goldstein was booked up for a bit.  A lot.  But I want my dog to live.  Gave them info on my vet, made appoint.Several days later, an hour before the consult, I get a call stating that they have to cancel because I never filled out the paperwork they say they sent in an email.  I told them I never got an email - which was just confirmed minutes ago - they never sent it.  They dropped the ball.  I asked to do an email consultation because the next appointment they now have I will be in South America preparing to get on a ship for Antarctica.  Gone 3 weeks.  I didn't want to wait that long for my dog to get started.  I could have had my dog sitter start with a program as soon as I talk with them. They told me they will only consult on the phone.  Refused to budge.  Told me to buy a phone card and to be available when I'm at the bottom of the earth.  Sickening lack of compassion. These people dropped the ball and then refused to bend their rules to help my dog.  I will find somebody who actually cares. And a question for Dr. Goldstein re: the exorbitant fees -- How much is enough for you? Read Less

We just started bringing our nine year old pembroke welsh corgi, Barclay there for holistic treatments and integrative medicine at the recommendation of some close friends. I wish I had learned of this veterinary practice sooner! We plan to start bringing our 10 year old Bengal Tiger/Maine Coone cat mix, Orin here too. It is located in Westchester and we live in Manhattan, but it is worth the long drive. Last week we first came to them at a very critical point in our pup's health. They were very instrumental and most effective at stabilizing Barclay with vitamin c intravenous fluid drips, ozone therapy, acupuncture, herbal shots and supplements. I must give Dr Jenna Lenarz credit for mitigating a precarious prognosis that was given to us by an emergency animal hospital in NYC. Dr Jenna is knowledgeable as she is compassionate, and we just adore her! Dr Rushkin is also wonderful. While Dr Rushkin wasn€t our attending physician she made it a point to check in with us and offer advice and support for Barclay. Smith Ridge Veterinary Center is a treasure and a Godsend. The doctors, technicians and staff have such a wonderful rapport with the animals. Unlike some veterinary practices, they do NOT rush through appointments at all. Quality time is spent gaining the trust of the animals, evaluating records & animal health and vitality, and answering your questions... To my surprise, Barclay did not need to be muzzled while getting catheters installed, temperature checks via hind quarters etc and other uncomfortable procedures. Dr. Jenna, and the wonderful team of technicians talk to Barclay and communicate with him throughout every procedure thus allowing him to gain their trust and also feel dignified. In return, he is amicable and cooperative. I also do not have to fight to get Barclay through the door whenever we come here. He enters willingly and he is also very happy to do some shopping for treats in their little €general store€ while I check him in at the front desk. Read Less

Amazing vets and inventive holistic treatments. I don't trust any other vets, they always go beyond to treat things from all angles and avoid invasive treatments when possible. Some staff are friendly and helpful, some are plain rude and insensitive. One front desk person never seems to be in a good mood and is consistently difficult, which is heart breaking at times, especially when pets are fighting for their lives. I also have wished they were open, or someone was on call, during the weekends, when my pets were very sick it left us in a very difficult situation. And it never fails that emergency situations always seem to happen on the weekend or a Friday night! ER vets don't understand the work they do and it's always difficult to communicate about supplements and holistic treatments they don't use and aren't familiar with. I hope they can manage and train front desk staff to be as patient and loving as the vets they hire, it would make a world of difference. Read Less

Where to begin...I wish there were enough positive words to describe our experience with Dr Jenna at Smith Ridge. We first came to Smith Ridge after using a vet that prescribed to traditional medicine (always resorting immediately to antibiotics, vaccinating without titers, etc) from the beginning we understood that Smith Ridge took a integrative approach to the care of animals. This in fact was why we choose them. Dr Jenna was wonderful sharing with us the approach they took at Smith Ridge and sharing research to support their practice. It was not a lecture, nor did we feel pressure to prescribe to a "new way" of doing things. They gave us information and the rest was left to us. Over the course of our relationship with Dr Jenna, she has positively transformed our dogs lives.  She approaches each dog as if they were her own. There is genuine care and concern when we come to her. No question is too small. She always makes you feel like you are the most important client. Most importantly, the dogs respond to her positive care. Our dogs are truly thriving. We have seen our older dogs actually seem to turn back the hands of time, while our younger dogs are off to a great start in life. My husband and I know our dogs are in good hands at Smith Ridge both with Dr Jenna and the caring knowledgeable Vet Tech staff. From the moment you walk into Smith Ridge, the front office treats you with professionalism and helps to make the stay/visit at Smith Ridge a positive one. Over the years, I have taken two adopted Black Labs to the vets at Smith Ridge. They gotten excellent care, some for very difficult to treat issues that would be difficult to find else where. The first was being treated by a veterinary oncologist for a rare form of stomach cancer. Expected life span with this diagnosis and surgery and oncology treatment is very short. Smith Ridge helped build up his immune system and help keep his quality of life very high until the very end, about a year longer than expected. The second adopted Black Lab was being fostered in New Orleans prior to his adoption by us. He was nursed back to health by his foster family and received standard treatment to try to deal with heart worm. The treatment didn't work, and neither did some alternative techniques that were tried. After we adopted him, we brought him to Smith Ridge. An alternative treatment was offered that was customized for him. No pain, no restrictions. No bad reactions. The treatment worked and the heart worm condition was cured.Since then, he was been treated for a variety of other issues, including a food allergy. They the identified the culprits, and we changed his diet with great results. The preventive care and other sustaining techniques to help maintain his health have been very effective.Currently, he is being treated by Dr. Randie Shane. She is caring, has a great rapport with Beau, and provides outstanding care. The staff, technicians, resources, and other doctors at Smith Ridge have been a pleasure to work with. Read Less

I have been going to Smith Ridge Veterinary Center for over twenty years. During this time I have been afforded the opportunity of working with Dr. Marty and Doctors' Ruskin,  Lenarz and Shase.   These Doctors are the "best of the best."   They are not just veterinarians they are individuals who are devoted to the well being, comfort and health of all our four legged friends. Everyone at Smith Ridge make the trip a pleasurable one, the reception staff, back office, the vet assistants; are all genuine, caring individuals .  I have recommended them countless times over the years and have always received grateful thank you for those recommendations. I started  practicing a holistic approach to my pups health 20 years ago.  On Nov. 4, 2015 I lost one of my friends, Scout, an 18 1/2 year old cocker spaniel, . She was the oldest patient in Dr. Marty's practice and they made sure her last days were comfortable. She passed peacefully in my arms.  I know in my heart and mind that her long and healthy life was derived from following the holistic approach which I learned and continue to learn from the doctors at Smith Ridge and especially because of the care afforded her by them.  She is survived by her 6 year old Golden retriever sister Bree.  Last week I brought her to Smith Ridge for her annual teeth cleaning. I live in New York City and several friends asked "Why drive 2 hours each way, there are plenty of vets here."  My answer was simple, if I had to drive to California to find the care, love, professionalism and security I have at Smith Ridge, I wouldn't think twice.  I am truly blessed to have found them . My Sienna was diagnosed with a cancerous bleeding stomach tumor by an internal specialist vet 3 months ago. She was originally 18 lbs and was down to 14 lbs. Surgery / biopsy were not personal options for me as it meant she would have to be put down if cancer was confirmed. I am not in favor of chemo and prefer to give QUALITY of life vs. quantity and did not want to do treatments that would make her sick. I was given meds to keep her comfortable and told to enjoy whatever time she had left. After calling 2 local holistic vets and 1 cancer specialist, none of which showed any urgency to my situation, a friend of mine told me about Smith Ridge Veterinary Center.  I decided to make that call the next heard and felt my urgency and told me to come in the next morning. It was a 2 hour trip up and a 2 hour trip back and it was worth EVERY minute of the drive, including the traffic.Dr. Jacqueline Ruskin saw and examined her and after reviewing her records, recommended a supplement program after a 3-day IVC treatment. Sienna's tumor stopped bleeding and she had clear bright eyes again, her coat was shinier than ever, and she had pep in her step and a bounce in her walk again!!!!!!!  She was going on very short walks, growling at her brothers and sisters again and climbing the steps which she hasn't done in awhile. She was so weak right before taking her for the treatments I thought she was going to pass right in the car on the way to Salem that first day for the exam and evaluation.  The doctors and staff at Smith Ridge even made a room for me to sit with her for her treatments and their vet tech staff held her for hours on her second day.  I can't say enough about Smith Ridge and especially Dr. Ruskin. THEY SAVE LIVES AND GIVE QUALITY TO THOSE THAT HAVE NO HOPE. Even if she still had the tumor she had more time. More QUALITY time with me. Sienna passed on February 2nd, 2016. She had 3 months to the day of LIFE after her diagnosis. She was pain free, eating, wagging her tail, and loving me until the night before she took her last breath.  She passed at home, peacefully surrounded by her family, next to me, pain free, stress free, and ready to fly. There are no words to thank Dr. Ruskin and the folks at Smith Ridge for those precious 3 months.  99 days........99 times I go to wake up with her, hold her, feed her, snuggle her, tell her I love her and receive her love with had no boundaries for me.  I have Dr. Ruskin to thank for that........99 times over.  I woke up every day thanking God she was still with me. None of us have guarantees for tomorrow. These 3 months showed me that we need to be thankful not just when our pets get cancer but every day.  99 hugs x 99 times a day, 99 mornings, 99 nights........THANK YOU DR. RUSKIN! Read Less

I met Dr. Goldstein in the early 80's when he had a smaller practice just up the road. He was "holistic" when holistic wasn't mainstream and my initial experience with him was outstanding. My dog had a strange skin condition that nobody could figure out, but one look and he knew exactly what it was and prescribed thyroid medication. I had rescued the little Cairn from a vet whose previous owners had brought her down to be put to sleep because of the skin condition. He instead allowed me to take her home. I have gone to other vets over the years due to geographic convenience, and while they were all good, the vets here speak my language, so I find that even though the prices might be a bit higher, in the end, I'm spending the same or less because I get right to the source of the issue. They don't look at me sideways when I don't want to give steroids or tons of vaccinations and instead want try natural remedies. In a word, Terrible.Add Terrifying and Abusive to the description, and you might get the picture of what we experienced here. Our cat was killed here, as a result of absolute Negligence, on August 4th, 2010. Our cat suffocated to death as both Dr. Jaqueline Ruskin [incompetent] and Dr. Goldstein himself bumbled about when a downright arrogant and untrained Vet Tech TORE THE TRACHEA OF OUR ELEGANT SIAMESE CAT WHEN PUTTING IN AN INCUBATION TUBE!No Doctor present practiced basic lifesaving techniques that they should have learned the first year of Vet School. A Tracheotomy should have been performed immediately. Instead, they unbelievably shot her with Epinephrine and were so pathetically ignorant to the fact that she was turning blue and 'blowing up' because she could not breathe! Our elegant Siamese cat died a horrendous death at the hands of stupid, ignorant, arrogant, incompetent, and diabolical individuals who had no common sense or caring for someone's beloved family member. The lies, and deception that took place after this horrible incident are horrifying, to say the least.About a month after the shock of our cat's death, I get a charge on my credit card for $895 for the entire charge of the surgery.... as though my cat was alive and well and the surgery went perfectly! Are you kidding me? I fought with this money-grubbing vet center for more than 10 months to get this charge reversed and taken off of my Amex bill! The nasty, argumentative letters from the manipulative, totally WICKED "Office Manager" named Melinda to Amex were outrageous and astonishing.Any "Holistic" center that has such uncouth and sick behavior is clearly NOT "Holistic" in any sense of the word! This wretched entity [who is literally a demon from Hell] who runs the office ONLY cares about raking in as much money as she can regardless of WHAT THEY DO TO YOUR BELOVED FAMILY PET!And whom does she work for? DO NOT believe any of the "marketing" or "Public Relations" tactics from this rotten-to-the-core group of people who are both unsophisticated and uncaring at the end of the day. They will NEVER take responsibility for killing, hurting, or terrifying your pet on any level. I am extremely Holistic in all aspects of life, as  I am a Holistic Nutrition Counselor, Journalist, and Environmentalist. I believed we were going to the best place possible for our beloved Siamese, only to find out that Smith Ridge Vet Center has people like Dr. Jaqueline Ruskin, and other people there who are not only incompetent but the exact OPPOSITE of Holistic or even remotely Honorable in their practices. Dr. Goldstein, when he is around [and he was present during the horrible killing of our cat] might do something for a Celebrity's pet, then create a buzz for himself, but for everyone else.... you are just about the money and very little "Holistic Practices" come into play.It has been a nightmare for us to deal with the pain and sorrow this incompetence has caused us. Again, don't believe one word....NOT ONE WORD.... of the marketing of this diabolical place of horrors.--Dr. Ruskin has been charged with Second Degree Negligence by the NY State Veterinarian Board who reviewed this case. The only reason she did not lose her license over this killing of our cat is because we could not have a Necropsy since this office quickly froze her body afterward. Otherwise, she would have been charged with 1st Degree Negligence and her license would have been revoked. Read Less

Initial Reaction: I'm surprised there aren't more reviews on this place. I took my puppy there for a routine check up, he saw Dr. Ruskin and was completely comfortable, she answered every question I had and even took time for my puppy to play and comfort my pup before she started the exam. They take a very moderate approach to medicine which is exactly what I was looking for. Disclaimer:  Prices....You get exactly what you pay for! Being a poor student myself I did feel a slight twinge when I heard the price and dutifully handed over my credit card, BUT the staff and doctors were so amazing I realized it was more important to spend money on great health care than toys, fancy treats, and other unnecessary things. Conclusion: If you want the best for your pet, there is no doubt in my mind that Smith Ridge is it. This is a review for Martin Goldstein and his stellar team of vets at Smith Ridge. When my golden retriever Tipper was diagnosed with inoperable liver cancer, "Dr. Marty" and his team were highly recommended by several people, so I took her up there. The fees are wildly expensive, but with a comprehensive program of holistic meds and phone consultations, we were able to prolong Tipper's life two years, and most of the time she appeared to be happy and healthy. We actually didn't have to travel up there much at all, and had her monitored by our vet in the city. We dealt with another of the associates, and in truth I don't think I ever actually met Martin Goldstein at all. Dr. Marty is also "veterinarian to the stars," including John Travolta, if that matters to you. His book "The Nature of Animal Healing" amazon.com/Nature-Animal… is a wonderful handbook for caring for your little monsters. Read Less

Read Less

RUSKIN! Read Less

Before I had a phone consultation with Dr. Goldstein, I'd been through a lot with a dozen of holistic vets across the country. Just like anything else, there's good one, better one & the best in any profession. No doubt, Dr. Goldstein is the best in the country, I'm sure he is the best in the world too. Not just my babies(6 cats) better health, he changed my idea of "being healthy" too. I'm very grateful. Read Less

My little dachshund Blue was diagnosed with Cushings back in January 2008.  I consulted with several vets, all of whom told me the same thing:  that my only hope was to give my dog a medicine that contained DDT,  for the rest of his life -- and that I would have to wear gloves to give it to him!!  I was so upset!!  I had Dr Marty Goldstein's book so I called him up.  He has such a great perspective on natural healing for pets and was truly inspirational whenever I spoke with him.  He put Blue on natural supplements and even though Cushings is a chronic disease, he remained stable and off any pharmaceutical products for the rest of his life.  I can't say enough about Dr Marty -- I trusted him so much and everything that he said that I wish he were my doctor!!!  (And I would love it if he would bring back his radio show!!!)  THANK YOU AGAIN Dr Marty and Smith Ridge!!!  I will see you again!! Dr. Goldstein is semi-retired, so now I work with Dr. Seo, who is wonderful also. Read Less

While I agree that this vet practice is expensive, I feel like my pet cat received tremendous care from Dr. Ruskin that was worth the price. The difference in superior level of care has been astonishing.

After all, I am willing to drive and hour to get there! Read Less

Read Less
