Overpriced and incompetent. I had my dog spayed here. When I asked the doctor when I needed to bring her back for a follow-up, he said I didn’t have to because they used glue which would dissolve on its own. When I got her home and inspected the wound, there were staples. Then, I needed to get her heart worm medication. I got her first two doses from them. I then tried to order a six month supply from Chewy. They wouldn’t approve, first claiming she needed a heart worm test (she didn’t), then claimed they would only give one dose at a time until she’s a year (her breed generally reaches adult size by 9 months) because the meds are weight based, then they approved the six month supply, then they rejected it, then they approved a three month from chewy, (chewy only sells in 6 or 12 month supply), then they said they wouldn’t give a prescription until she’s a year, but would send me 2 pills in the mail for $63. (Chewy was going to charge $123 for 6 months). I will NEVER use this place again. No one knows what’s going on. You get a completely different answer every time you speak to someone. I’m calling the licensing board to formally complain. Read Less

There are no words to express my gratitude to Dr Cavallaro and her most professional staff. If it were not for her my dog would not be alive today.  She went above and beyond what I ever expected from a doctor . Her knowledge, professionalism and compassion got me through a very difficult time when I thought there was no hope for my precious dog. I was very impressed at how quickly she diagnosed him.  I got some test results within an hour.  This is because most of the tests were done at the facility.  She thoroughly explained what was happenening. She also gave me the time I needed to ask any questions, never rushing me.  I was also impressed that she called me for updates on how my dog was doing.  I have never even experienced this type of care for myself as a human being.  It's very comforting to know there are still some people out there that care as much as Dr. Cavallaro does. She answered my questions and quieted my fears.  She was truly a blessing to me and my dog.  My dog is happy and healthy and enjoying his life thanks to her !!It's also important to note that the facility is extremely clean and modern.  The staff is very courteous and professional as well.  I would highly recommend Dr. Cavallaro and Bay Street Animal Hospital if your looking for true professional facility. I cannot come up with the words powerful enough to describe my "above the norm" experience with Dr. Cavallaro and Bay St Animal Hospital. My dog was recently diagnosed with bone cancer and ended up having her front leg amputated. If it we're not for Dr. Cavallaro's superior expertise and knowledge my dog would not be alive today. I have been a client of her's for 15+ years and never have seen anyone so perfect in her diagnosis. Her level of care not only is exemplified by her but also by her staff. They all treat each of those animals in their care as if it were there own.  You can be assured if you pet is in the hands of Dr. Cavallaro and her staff you will have no worries! Read Less

I'm so happy to have found Bay Street Animal Hospital. I have two cats who had not been to the vet for years. One is a particularly fractious cat when it comes to vet visits and, over the past ten years, no other vets could (or wanted) to handle her. Doctors at Bay Street did, and did it well. Both were treated for ailments that became acute within a one week period and now they are thriving. Kind and caring vets and doctors. Thank you. Read Less

Starting with the front desk staff, to the technicians and every Doctor we have seen at this practice you are shown how each team member truly loves their job. The hospital is exceptionally clean and all of the tests were performed on site. The first time we used Bay Street Animal Hospital was years ago when we needed emergency care for my first dog. She was old and arthritic and could not walk. One of the doctors from Bay Street Animal Hospital came to our house to assess her. Unfortunately, there was nothing they could do and we had to make the difficult decision to put her to sleep. The doctors and staff from Bay Street Animal Hospital were kind and considerate. They made my dog comfortable and treated her and our loss with sensitivity and respect. We now take my current dog, Rambo,  to Bay Street Animal Hospital.  The office is always clean and never smells like there are animals on the premises. The doctors take the time to make my boy feel comfortable and treat him gently. When we had a health scare with him, Dr. Candrilli (she is wonderful) calmly and succinctly explained the problem and our options and gave us the information we needed to make the best decision for him. They also offer many different options and services to help keep animals healthy, including acupuncture and herbal remedies. I will do anything necessary to keep my baby safe and healthy as long as possible and that includes getting him the best care possible. Bay Street Animal Hospital offers that high level of care for this very important member of the family. We will continue to take Rambo here. Read Less

An awful place.  Cats deserve better care.  I scheduled a grooming appointment for my mom's cat on June 10th so that when my mom was celebrating her 90th birthday on the 17th the cat would be able to meet her guests. They called  to say it had to be rescheduled to the follow Saturday.  With all the deliveries and planning I now had to take the cat to the groomer on mom's birthday!    Well that appointment was rescheduled as the groomer called out again.  We reschedule for June for June 25th.   No call so I head over to the office an was told that the groomer had an accident and all appointments were rescheduled to Sunday.  I said I was not called and the response was that I never had an appointment.   They checked the computer and confirmed that I "never had an appointment".  Is this how to run a business?  They didn't offer me another appointment, no false apology?  I have to call out their incompetence.  Where is the pride in your business and respect for a customer?   Don't go here unless you want to experience the same bad treatment.  I would like to call out the names of the people on the business card I receive as poor business owners:Theresa A Cavallaro DVMJustine Candrilli DVMKeith Gorgon DVMRobert B Cohen VMDPeter Donchik DVMMalgorzalta Lepkoski DVMIf you've had a similar experience please post here. A Wasted Evening or Forgotten in the Exam RoomI had been recommended to this place by a friend, I got to my appointment early, was shown into an exam room forty five minutes later (now a half hour past my appointment time) and waited an hour and a half on top of that, finally I went out and was told by the front desk person that they had not known that I was in there and had not been seen yet. This is the same lady who made sure to get all my billing information. It turns out there was an emergency case, which is fine but then someone should have gone and told us that A) We might not be seen for some time and B) Perhaps we should rebook.I was assured that someone would be seeing us, after waiting another fifteen minutes and not hearing anything I went out again, the receptionist said that we were next but she did not know when the doctor would be able to see us. "It could be five minutes or twenty five minutes." I came in at about 08:30 it was now close to 11:00 and I had to leave. Even then they said we could reschedule, why? After they wasted my evening?Mind you that they called me the afternoon before I came in to make sure I was keeping my appointment so if they were so backed up they should have extended me the same courtesy and called me or told me when I got there I might not be seen until late that night or perhaps have another doctor on call to handle the overflow; we were told by another person in the waiting area that several other people left and rescheduled. The receptionist said that all the other people ahead of us were still waiting to be seen, is that supposed to make me feel better, that I am not the only chump stuck in exam room limbo? They seemed caring, the place was clean, however, I cannot tell you the quality of the service they provide as I was never seen by the doctor. I'd say if you don't mind waiting awhile use them as they are open late, however, I won't! Read Less

The staff are welcoming and always helpful. I've boarded my dogs there as well and in all 20 years, NEVER have I been dissatisfied! I also rescue, I bring my rescue pups/foster pups there as well. I had a pup (who has now since passed) with special needs, they never took advantage of me financially through testing unnecessarily, it was just the opposite. They were very upfront about what I would be looking at financially and if it was necessary or just to "satisfy my need to know, which won't change the outcome ". I appreciate their honesty, loyalty and love for all animals. I wouldn't recommend any other place. When my special needs boy passed on, they cried along side of me. This DVM killed our beloved dog Napoleon a beautiful nine year old miniature pincher. She operated on him without our permission ( Informed Consent ) she did an exploratory laparotomy on him despite two abdominal ultrasounds that were negative for a foreign ingested object and a Barium Study that was also negative . The second surgical procedure was a Pyloroplasty of the pyloric canal to treat a condition known as pyloric stenosis that our dog did not have.  Dogs with pyloric stenosis will regularly vomit up partially digested food and most dogs are born with this condition and some do develop it later in life but Napoleon was not at all symptomatic of this condition at any time in his life.  The pyloroplasty procedure that this murdering greedy disgrace of a DVM performed on Napoleon did two things that killed Napoleon ... Her inexperience in performing this surgery resulted in the dog getting a SEVERE and fatal bout of pancreatitis confirmed by Red Bank Veterinarian Hospital where Napoleon was referred to by the scumbag responsible for this nightmare Keith Gordon Napoleons regular DVM at this hell hole of a hospital. The second thing it did that killed Napoleon was it completely failed collapsing and completely closing off the dogs pyloric canal this was discovered during surgery to insert a J Tube into his lower intestine bypassing the stomach on his last day alive at Red Bank. Napoleon was being fed through a nasal tube and after continued vomiting and not being able to hold down the liquid food supplement being administered his only chance at survival would be to start feeding through a J Tube. During this surgery it was discovered by the surgeon at Red Bank in a last ditch effort to save his life that Cavallaro's pyloroplasty had failed and reconstructive corrective surgery had to be done called a Bill Roth procedure. Napoleon died just five hours after this last attempt to save his life after the butchery and criminal deplorable care he received ay Bay Street Animal Hospital. Keith Gordon and Theresa Cavallaro killed Napoleon it's that simple and I challange Theresa Cavallaro to respond to this review and defend her negligent irresponsible actions that are in stark contrast to that of the standard of care of veterinarians licensed by the state of New York. What licensed DVM in New York State would operate on a clients dog without speaking to the owners of the pet offering complete Informed Consent and getting the permission to operate on their pet. We had are right to a second opinion stripped from us by both Gordon and Cavallaro.  The DVM's at Red Bank could not believe the deporable condition Napoleon was in telling us on his last day alive he is by far one of the saddest cases to be referred to them that they have ever attempted to save ... 18,000 dollars in total veterinarians bills and Napoleon was handed to me in a white cardboard box to be laid to rest and I'm sorry for my use of language in this review but if this was your beloved family member butchered by these two scumbags Gordon and Cavallaro how would you feel and how would you react.  I challenge either one of them to defend their actions and produce the signed informed consent that myself or my wife would have needed to sign granting them permission to operate on our dog...And one last thing a veterinarian can take matters into their own hands regarding a decision to operate on your dog in a life and death matter such as a dog rushed in hit by a car a situation that poses a life and death matter at that exact moment where immediate action is warranted. Napoleon was not in anyway shape or form in this category and the record proves it his blood work the abdominal ultrasounds the barium study ect...A complain has been filed with the NYS Licensing Board against Gordon who once noticed of my complaint sent me a text message threatening me telling me I CROSSED A LINE... That complaint is still pending and Cavallaro's complaint will be filed once a determination has been made on Gordon this was not my preferred way to file the complaints I wanted both at once but the board wanted it done this way.  I don't expect much or anything in the way of disciplinary action to be taken by the board after all fellow veterinarians sit on the board my hope is they will see in this case the obvious incompetence and neglect carried out by these two disgraceful veterinarians..... My household has received incredible care for all 5 of our pets, until recently. Two days ago our oldest two were diagnosed with positive Giardia blood results so all animals needed to be on meds. My partner and I have called a collective 5-6 times - in the last 24 hours alone - since then about the urgent necessity of a pill form for all pets since a) the cats aren't eating the powder, nor the dogs, b) we are both told pedantically "oh they will eat it eventually," despite the knowledge and experience that they won't and are not, and c) I personally incurred over $120 toward an emergency doctor office visit on top of antibiotics as the bites from one of the traumatized cats are infected. (The staff seem to have a sense of entitlement and one female staffer had the nerve to be defensive by my perceived tone as I was shouting over Midtown traffic - and APOLOGIZED for such!) Sorry folks, but I don't need to validate how you feel or how you perceive my message: your staff dropped the ball and clearly cannot pass a simple message (or 6) regarding needing the right form of medication for our household after a $341 vet bill - human error, but own it. You just need to apologize and deal. Thanks to you and your white privilege and entitlement crossing professional boundaries, we are the ones hurting. Not you.Read Less

A tumor doesn't grow overnight! unfortunately by then, the tumor was too big to fix. it got so bad to the point to where he couldn't walk up & down the stairs and could barely walk. We've been taking my dogs there since before I can remember and honestly, it has a heartwarming staff, fantastic facilities, and amazing doctors. They not only go above and beyond in care (clipping nails and cleaning ears) but they remembered which of my dogs was which, and are more than happy to answer questions my younger sister has (and she has a lot). Even before my current three dogs, we took my first dog there. They cared for her from one year until the end, and were always careful about the arthritis she had and were very happy to see her. Even in boarding, they remember to keep two of my dogs together (as they have separation anxiety) and are always watchful and mindful about their needs. They even check the wrinkles to make sure there's nothing wrong we can't see (as I have three pugs). They pay special attention to my blind and deaf dog, and I've never seen any vet's face light up the way these do when noisy dogs come in. I recommend wholeheartedly. Read Less

Been taking my 2 dogs to this vet hospital for several years now and in the beginning things were good....prices were low staff was pleasant .but, over the past 2 years prices have really went sky high! my older dog began having problems : listless lethargic not eating on evening. i decided that I would take her to this hospital first thing if she didnt improve. the dog was no better in the am so I called this office first thing and the receptionist was really quite rude! After explaining the situation the woman had the nerve to say "" everyone thinks their animal is on deaths door!!"" Well my old girl was... After seeing the vet, the tab started going up: x rays, IVFluids , etc.... Dont get me wrong I would have done anything to save her but after all was over, I took a good look at the charges: $35 for a IV pump just to name one! I didnt buy it ! And 3 hours after entering that office all i left with was a collar and a hugh bill! Plus the cost of cremation brought the total to just under $900! I just feel like we were ""had"" This vet may be good but WAY overpriced! I do think I was somewhat taken advantage of in our hour of need. And with what the receptionist said that sad morning, i dont think i will back. Read Less

Bay Street Animal Hospital has been a life saver to my girlfriend and me, We have a chihuahua named Abby who is very finicky, like all chihuahuas. But she, in particular, has low self-esteem and very bad panic attacks. She begins to shake uncontrollable and yelp and scratch the door. We have gotten complaints from tenants and calls from the landlord every time she has been left alone. Our original vet was too rough with her, so we switched to Bay Street Animal Hospital. They have been very patient and gentle with her and always know how to relate to her. Recently, a medical emergency forced me to make long-term daily ""babysitting"" arrangements at Bay Street Animal Hospital while I go to work. Abby is the first client in and the last client out everyday. Even though this is on a day by day basis and sometimes my schedule forces Abby to have to stay overnight, the staff has been pleasant, patient and completely understanding. Abby has also adjusted very nicely to being baby-sat. She won't stay with anyone usually, but she walks right over to whichever staff member greets her. There is always a great smile on their faces, and when I walk in late and apologetic, they nonchalantly let it go, making me feel like I am more than a client... I am part of the family. Thank you, Bay Street Animal Hospital. If not for you, I don't know if we would be able to keep our baby, Abby. Rich Read Less

We (native Staten Islanders -(1955 and 1963) and our pets have been life-long clients of Bay St. Animal Hospital, and have known Drs. Cohen and Cavallaro since they were at Rosebank Vets ? since 1988. They have SHARED our experiences with our pets throughout their lives. Our previous dogs, Honey and Barkley, were very well cared for by the doctors and staff. In addition, our families have been clients as well, with their own pets, for many years. (They still speak glowingly of the relationships.) These vets took the time to offer the best possible treatments, without us spending a fortune on unnecessary surgeries, etc. that would have been so traumatic for our pets. Instead, they helped us to be well-informed pet owners, and were ALWAYS there for us when we needed help or had a question. Especially when it matters most. When each of our dogs became terminally ill, the most important thing they conveyed was the quality of life (for whatever remaining time) and helped us through those awful, awful times. Our first dog Honey (age 11) spared us from ?making the decision?. She passed away on her own, but we were COMFORTED to know that she was under the best of care in their hands (Dr. Cavallaro). When we saw her to say goodbye, she looked very peaceful, tucked in blankets to keep her comfortable. Most of all, we knew that SHE FELT SAFE with them! We received condolence card, and even their own pets comforted us as well! When our second dog Barkley was diagnosed with chondrosarcoma at 12 years of age, we were never pushed into expensive surgeries or treatments, but to give him the best affordable care possible and keep him happy. That was their goal ? NOT the money! When it came time to say ?goodbye?, Dr. Cohen was absolutely wonderful and caring, and so was the staff. We never thought that we could withstand the experience of euthanasia for our pets, but this was a positive experience (if you can call it that). All that mattered was our pet?s comfort and ?easy transition?. Every step was explained to us before and after. They even gave each of us a card with his paw print and a lock of his fur to keep. Now tell me if that does not demonstrate caring!! They were so thoughtful and understanding, and we will never forget that, ever. Now our current shelter dogs Chyna and Jericho (littermates) are patients as well. These dogs have their own ?issues? and are not that easy to work with. Nevertheless, it is ?no big deal? and they receive the care and exams (and grooming) that they need. Although they are not the best patients, any problems are taken into consideration on the pets? individual needs. And they don?t push our pets past their comfort zone, or stress them out. As a result, by now, they are a bit more confident going to the vet/groomer and like the attention they receive. (Even though our pets are still a handful!) WE UNDERSTAND THE FEELINGS OF ALL PET PARENTS. But PLEASE remember that the vets and staff have a difficult job working with patients who can?t tell them what hurts, and their (understandably) upset human families. And in the worst case scenarios, these professionals are extremely affected as well. We know. We have seen it. Could anyone deal with daily heartbreaks such as they endure? I think not. And yet the pull themselves together, and with a deep breath (I?m sure) have to move on to treat the next patients, giving their full concentration. I would HIGHLY recommend Bay Street Animal Hospital to every caring ?pet-parent? and their ?fur-babies? !! - Geri & Paul C. Read Less

Veterinary Care : Dr. is Good, but they milk you for all they can get. They medicate unnecessarily. the Staff is cold and phony. I don't like that they take your animal in the back and you can't see what they are doing. Then they charge you for tests they said they did, you don't know because they took them in the back. Boarding: I was thinking of boarding my dog there last summer, I asked to see the facility. They didn't want to at first. when I insisted, they left me waiting for about 20 min. (my guess to clean up) when I finally went back there, it smelled, and when I asked about an exercise area she told me they just take them out back to go to the bathroom 3 x's day. I asked to see the outside area. it was so small 6x6 and the concrete had fecal stains on it and urine stains. The girl told me they usually clean that down but they were too busy. The dogs looked bored and depressed. I asked if someone plays with them, she looked at me up & down and replied of course we do. She looked like she herself was overwhelmed, tired, and annoyed. she asked me if I wanted to book a reservation- I said ""No thank You"". I took my dog with me on vacation. The End! Read Less

The staff at the Bay Street Animal Hospital has been outstanding. We recently transferred treatment of our dog and our cat there as they had chronic problems which others had difficulty getting a handle on. Dr. Lepkowski diagnosed our pets' problems accurately and treatment thus far has been excellent. All of our calls and concerns have been addressed. The front office and tech staff is responsive and all messages are communicated. And the price is right. Read Less

Been going since they first opened I use Dr. Robert Cohen also Dr. Donchik and Dr. Combert, they are all very warm to my dogs. I love this place always felt they care about my dogs and any problems they have are taken care of. They also have a pet hotel on site with people there 24/7. They have full rooms which is great since I won't leave them in a cage. I adopted two chihuahuas and they are always greated by staff by name before I even check in. They have many vets on staff and always able to make an appointment. I wouldn't bring them any place else. Read Less

Read Less

I should have wrote this review years ago. We have been using this vet for over 20 years. Dr. cavalero is an excellent vet, however more recently we went and saw a different vet due to an emergency..... Dr.         Is the most caring and compassionate Vet we have ever met. In addition to her bedside manner she performed the most thorough exam of our Daisey girl.  She was there for us calling and checking on Daisey. Helped out with a follow up as well. Prices are prices. They are neither expensive or cheap. This is for your pet... Your loved one.... Bay Street Animal Hospital is the best choice... I have more to add... Will update.

The End! Read Less

I've been a client of Bay Street Animal Hospital since they opened. My animals get the best care without question. I drive from the other side of the Island past 4 or 5 other vets to work with Drs. These two doctors will always tell me the truth about their care and not influence me hoping to make more money--the animals are the most important thing. When you love animals as much as I do, you want their medical care the absolute best and that's what they get at Bay Street. Read Less
