I switched vets because my old vet was just money hungry and I wasn't comfortable there anymore. A friend of mine suggested Dr Jerger and was she a blessing. Within one visit he had diagnosed my dogs cancer, had me scheduled for surgery, guided me every step of the way in a loving non judgemental way and had my baby with me for another few years. I cannot express enough how caring Dr Jerger and Dr Brown are with pets. Both my dog and cat have seen them and they don’t even get nervous when entering the office. They hire assistants and vet techs that are gentle, caring, and know what they are doing. The office is on call and we had an emergency at 2AM and they called us back immediately. Unfortunately we had to make a trip to the vet, as our 9 year old APBT wasn't walking correctly. She couldn't keep one of her hind paws firmly to the ground so she dragged the entire leg. Thankfully Dr. Brown was able to squeeze us in. From the front desk girls, to the techs, to the Dr. it was a pleasurable experience. We used to take our dog to a commercial in-store hospital, but it wasn't personal and it seems like they would charge us for every little thing despite having insurance with the place. When we visited Dr. Jerger the first time, he was warm and friendly and we appreciate the time he took to listen to our concerns with our dog. The staff is also very warm, friendly, and professional. The thing I appreciate the most is that your pet is treated in the same room that you are, unlike the previous vet experiences we've had. Dr. Jerger and his staff are truly amazing. My dog had been in and out of emergency hospitals. He was diagnosed with diabetes. Not one place could help him. My friend told me about Dongan Hills Vet. I called and they told me to come in. They took great care of my dog and got his diabetes under control. Also, any questions I had all I had to do was call. I needed a vet in a hurry on a Sunday and Dr. Jerger returned my call and had me come in right away.  He quickly put me in system and went right to work diagnosing Bruno to see what was wrong. Dr Jerger is one of the most caring and understanding vets we've ever met. We met Dr Jerger when our Lucky girl (Black Lab) hurt her leg. Little did we know it was a blessing in disguise. She bounced back the next day after his examination. During this exam Dr Jerger found she had an issue with her anal sacks. Long story short, the next visit we had w him a couple months later just for a follow-up... it was almost too late, we did testing and found it was cancer! That's how fast it progressed. She needed surgery. He asked Dr Carreras to assist him (I never got a chance to thank Dr Carreras... Thank you!!) They both saved our girl. We are so grateful to have met him. It was a very tuff decision considering her age 12. I have to say it was the best decision we ever made. It's like she is a puppy again. It was a big surgery & was not easy for the dog or the doctors. They had to keep her for a week. We visited every night walked her and brought her a treat. Just to try and make her recovery easier. I have to say even when we visited in the evening Tom, Cortney & Shamus the technicians were so caring and treated her & us so well. They explained everything to us when we were there. I felt comfortable leaving her, which wasn't easy because she's never been away from us. In the end, they did an amazing job!!!  She's doing wonderfully... Our 2 year old son missed her terribly. We bring our pups here. They are very good and knowledgeable about veterinary care, and surgery. Our new adoption had an undescended testicle, and Dr. Jerger was able to neuter our pup with no side effects. They gave our pup pain killers, but the surgery was so successful, he did not show any signs of pain and was his old self within hours of the surgery. Finally, their prices are very reasonable and they do their best to not give animals unnecessary tests. I would recommend this vet to anyone and very much entrust them with my dogs' care anytime. Yesterday I had to make the difficult decision to put my cat of 20 years down. Being that she had never left the house before, I was adamant about having someone who would come to the house and do it. I found the website for Dongan Hills Vet online. When I called, the staff were extremely helpful and empathetic of my situation. They made sure to call me back for confirmation and answer any questions I had about the process. When Dr. Jerger showed up, he was kind and compassionate. He checked my cat for everything he could without a blood test and assured me I was making the right decision. He made it clear he does not put down animals if he feels it isnt their time--this was very reassuring to me. He talked us through the process and tried to make jokes/distract us to lighten the situation, which was so helpful. He made sure my cat was comfortable in the process and let us grieve as we did. He even offered afterwards to have my cats paw prints memorialized in clay for a very inexpensive price. Having Dr. Jerger to do this reassured me I was making the right decision and I am grateful and appreciative of his bedside manner and compassion. Thank God for Dr. Brown and for her care and compassion for animals.  If I could give Dongan Hills Vet 10 stars I would.  Dr. Brown and Dr. Jerger are so committed to this practice and to the animals.  We took our cat to Dr. Brown because he seemed to be in pain and was not urinating.  Dr. Brown was worried because she knew he could obstruct at any moment which is life threatening for cats.  Dr. Brown and the doctor within her went right into action!  She got him hooked up immediately to IV fluids, proper pain medication and antibiotics.  I love this place and I will forever be grateful to Dr. Brown.   I will be a customer for life.  I would like to point out how wonderful the staff is in this office, from the receptionists, vet techs and assistants who are all super kind and courteous to the pets and to the people.  P.S. our cat is back to himself, healthy, happy and bird watching from windows in our house, thanks to Dr. Brown. Once upon a time as a long time dog lover I never believed I would fall in love with an older stray cat that started coming to my front porch every so often. After I fed this cat once he started coming everyday. So we decided to keep him and name him Kobe. But of course doing so means that we would need to bring him to the vet and make sure he would get all his shots and get a check up. Dr.Jerger and his staff has been doing an amazing job! They are the nicest and most caring animal medical professionals that you will ever come across. We're not sure how old Kobe the cat is but he has a heart condition and a thyroid problem. There is no vet like Dr Brown. My cat is afraid to go in her carrier. Dr Brown made house calls to our home twice in the past week. She is so kind and so loving. She made our cat feel so calm. I've honestly never met a more kind and compassionate Dr. Than Dr. Brown. I looked up this practice based on the reviews, and it paid off. She takes her time to thoroughly examine, explain, and ensure her clients know exactly whats going on and what to expect. She taught my husband and I how to birth a litter of kittens and eased our minds telling us that it would be a beautiful experience that not many people are lucky to have...which it was. She was there for us throughout the birth along with Dr. Jerger who guided us through the birth over the phone. They were also ready to come to our home (during the snowstorm on Jan 23 2016 no less) if needed to assist us with the birth if it was necessary. Dr. Brown was with us through life...and through death as she came to our home today to put our beloved 16 year old cat to sleep after suffering from kidney failure. She was more gentle and kind hearted than any veterinarian I've come across and I value having found her and her wonderful practice. Her staff are exemplary as well. We started with Dr Carreras 20 years ago with our 2 Bulldogs. High maint dogs who we loved dearly. One had a pacemaker! Dr Carreras was wonderful through the ten years of their lives. Could not have asked for a more compassionate Vet. Present day, we now have a Beagle and Dr. Brown is his Vet. Recently his hind legs collapsed and he needed emergency spine surgery. Dr Brown is amazing ! She provided the greatest care and support as we nursed him back to health. This practice truly cares and loves the animals like they are their own. Dr. Brown recently became our new vet when our dog Merry became sick last year and I have to say she is one of the most wonderful vet's we have had the pleasure of dealing with and took such good care of Merry (and us) in her final days. I began bringing my dog here in March of this year. I had previously been very happy at Richmond Valley Animal Hospital, but I moved. I went to another vet in-between there and here that I was very unsatisfied with. On the basis of reviews and recommendations, I made an appointment at DHVP. Wow. No offense to Richmond Valley, as they took very good care of Nemo for years, but I never knew a vet could be THIS GOOD. Everyone, from the receptionists to the technicians to the vet I've been seeing, Dr. R. Jerger, is amazing. Tests were run after a very thorough explanation of what was happening and why. Results were provided next day by the doctor himself. Now Nemo needs some dental work, and having seen the people in this office care for my dog is the only reason I'm not completely freaking out at dropping him off someplace. I know he'll be in good hands. Pros: Expert veterinary care, wonderful customer service, hardly any wait at appointments, on call 24/7 for emergencies...I could go on and on. Cons: That I didn't find them sooner! As someone who treats her dog like her child, I highly recommend Dongan HIlls Veterinary Practice to all other dog parents on the island. (Or the other boroughs. For ten years we had been taking our dog to Dr. Carreras's office.  Last month we had to put my dog to sleep.  She developed a heart murmur and had a huge tumor in her chest.  Her last visit to this office was mid August, 2013.  Somehow, four veterinarians in this office missed what was obvious within five minutes to the vet at Bay St. Animal Hospital on August 23.  An x-ray revealed that my dog's condition was grave, and so we had to make a very painful decision.In May 2013 Dr. Carreras conducted a full check up--physical, vital signs, blood, urine and stool analysis, extraction of fluid from a fatty lump she had under her left leg--all negative.  While I know tests can be false negative, I don't know how they missed the development of the murmur and dismissed the signs of her inability to stop breathing and panting heavily, and loss of appetite as signs of old age, arthritis and her allergy.  He even told me to exercise her a few times a day because of her arthritis.  The vet at Bay St. said she could have suffered a heart attack from over exertion because of the heart murmur and tumor.  Imagine if that had happened during our daily walks!I read the other review that referred to Dr, Carreras as the closest thing to "St. Francis."  Well, St. Francis wasn't a doctor ,and took a vow of poverty. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have charged exorbitant prices for an incorrect diagnosis, and  I don't think he would have forgiven himself for imparting wrong information concerning a beloved pet.
