I wanted to share an experience I had at valley cottage animal hospital. I don't want to get into details about what happened to my dog because I don't know and neither did valley cottage animal hospital. She was my best friend in the world. I loved her more than anything. Valley cottage animal hospital tried multiple things to get her better, the last thing they tried was Intravenous antibiotics. I got a call to come down to the hospital because she was taking a turn for the worst. After a discussion with the vet, we decided the most humane thing for pepper was to put her to sleep.  The vet brought pepper in to a room and began to administer the serious of drugs to put her to sleep. She opened up the port and injected the first medication which was supposed to relax her. The liquid began to leak all over the floor and down my leg. My husband spoke up and told the vet that the liquid was leaking and she said "that's ok", she then administered the second drug with the same outcome. At this time Pepper began thrashing around. This time I spoke up and I said the liquid is spilling on the floor to which she replied that's ok she's still getting it. The third drug was administered and she said "it's done now". About 20 seconds later pepper get up and began to cry out in pain. After crying she began to vomit blood. I asked the vet what was happening and she ran to the back and came in with another vet and this time they injected the drug in to the back of her leg. Soon after Pepper died. Putting your dog to sleep is never easy. But what happened to Pepper was unfair. I'm not sure how much of the drug she got the first time. The port was either not in correctly or the needle wasn't correctly attached to the vein. Which made me think, maybe that's why the antibiotics weren't working. Pepper suffered and she didn't deserve that. What happened was traumatizing and cruel and when I went to talk to the owners about my experience they asked me if this was "all about money". After discussions back and forth they agreed to "re-train" and always check the ports on dogs before they are euthanized. It did nothing to bring pepper back.  I still walked out paying over a thousand dollars. I will never be going back there, not because of the way I was treated but because how they treated pepper. This is my cautionary tale to you. Read Less

Valley Cottage Animal Hospital was not my fur babies doctor but since her doctor is 45 minutes north when she was clearly ill a few weeks ago we had to rush her to VCAH as they are 5 minutes away. I knew going in that Allie wasn't going to make it and they were nothing but kind and caring.  They gave me time with her before and after. I was so upset and forgot to ask if i would be able to have her paw print and a few days later in the mailI received a condolence card with her paw print signed by a lot of the staff.  I was so grateful for this and my dad set me up to be able to receive Allies ashes. The pet cemetery not only provided a box with a picture frame with Allies ashes but also a clay block with Allies paw print. I can not speak for their medical services as Allie only went there once as a baby (which was a good visit just ended up with a family vet over the years) but I must say please keep doing what you are doing for grieving families. Ive spoken to others who have dealt with other animal hospitals and they didn't receive all the services and kindness i did. I truly am grateful that I have all this to remember Allie. Its all because you guys do the thinking for us while we are too upset to deal. Read Less

I give 5 stars because I don't believe one bad apple should spoil on a whole. There are a few outstanding incidents that I have dealt with. It was only with one female doctor over the years. I am not alone in that there are negative feelings towards this one doctor. Several "patients" and a couple of employees have confirmed the same. I don't believe this doctor would harm an animal but, she does make you feel uncomfortable. She's very rude and negative and you will pick up on that easily. I believe animals sense negativity as well and is all the more reason I won't bring my pets to her any longer. ---- There were a couple of times in the past where this hospital let me go on a payment plan. I appreciated this very much. I understand when people say they are expensive. I think all are. They need to get paid so they can continue to care for our pets. I understand it may seem that they might be more interested in money than the animals but, that is a tough call. If that is the case aren't human doctors like that? Either way, I have been going to this animal hospital for many, many years. They do care and I feel most of them really give their all. There is an animal hospital within walking distance to where I live but, I still choose to take the half hour drive to Valley Cottage. Read Less

I want everyone who reads yelp to know that my beloved dog Aja  had nothing but the best care from VCAH. I have been using them since 2004 when I got my very first yorkie Aja. She was always treated with great care and compassion by everyone. Dr Collins was her primary vet. She always referred Aja as her "Little Mouse" when she was examining her. Aja went to heaven on April 26,2018 after succumbing to kidney failure. I attribute her 14 yrs of life to the care she received over the years from VCAH. She received all her annual exams and dental cleaning and her special food from VCAH. It's comforting to know the 3 days and nights she spent there she was cared for 24 hrs a day by caring staff and drs. This is a hospital that lets you come anytime your pet is in need of care. Because of my work schedule I called at 4:30am for updates and always was given the most updated results with a compassionate voice on the other end. When I made that painful decision to let her go Dr Downing and her assistant let me have as much time as I needed to say goodby to her and she went her peacefully. I received a condolence card signed by all the doctors and to my greatest surprise was her paw print on a card. Right after letting her go was sadden that I never got her print done before she passed and thought it was a lost opportunity but I was so overjoyed when I saw her paw print I cried. Now I can have a necklace made of her paw print and have her memory forever thanks to the extra personal touches VCAH provides. Our pets are our family and everyone at VCAH makes you feel like family when you bring your pet in for care. I am forever grateful to everyone who works at VCAH. Read Less

I brought my 10.5 year old Yorkie to VC on the evening of February 8, 2017 because he had been shaking, falling down and had not been eating all day.  I was told when I called that Dr. Collins, my vet would not be in and that he would see Dr. Livingston.  I had no choice because something was wrong with him.Dr. Livingston told me that she was going to do some x-rays of his belly because it looked distended and that she was going to draw blood.  I left for an hour and came back to hear that his Pancreatic levels were high and that from the x-ray she could see some of his heart and it looked a little enlarged.  When we asked her if she took an x-ray of his leg that he kept falling down on she said No, that would cost you another $300.00!  Are you kidding me?I then asked her what the prognosis was and she said "I don't know".  I was totally baffled especially after I was given a bill in the amount of $712.87.  She gave him what I believe was an injection to settle his stomach.  She also said if he does not eat by Saturday I should bring him back.  I left there with nothing, NO answers.  I ended up bringing him back on Saturday when I saw Dr. Collins.  In my opinion, Dr. Collins is a very professional individual and a wonderful vet.  She came in, looked at Nico, who by the way, when I brought him in to see Dr. Livingston had 104.1 temperature.  Dr. Collins looked at his records from the first time I brought him in for his checkup 7 months ago.  She said his temperature was 103.5 then so he is just a "dog that runs hot".I was told by Dr. Collins that Nico had a "bacterial infection" and was given an antibiotic injection, a vitamin and I believe an anti-nausea injection.  We left there with a bill for 142.25 and was charged a well visit even though he was there two days before.  I took him home and for a week -- he seemed okay.  Long story short, my Yorkie left for the Rainbow Bridge on Friday, February 23, 2017.  Diagnosed by another wonderful vet with severe Pancreatitis whose inflammation was so bad it was causing kidney failure.  Also enlarged heart with some valve disease.  I did receive a message from VCAH expressing how deeply saddened they were, but did not mention any of the issues. Sorry does not cut it.  I do not want my money back but a little more care, compassion and concern and recognition of his issues would have been nice.  Sorry but I would not recommend them to anyone. Very one be aware that this hospital makes up bogus letters of bills owed. When you ask them for copies they cannot give you the original letter with the date that it was sent, or signed. They give you a copy of a letter dated the day you ask them for one. The employee said that was how their computer works. It doesn't maintain the original letters sent or signed . I called today cause I needed to put my dog to sleep after being paralyzed for 10 years. I had admitted him there in 2007. From that time to now I was just informed that I had an outstanding bill from 2007. I asked them for copies cause they said it was sent to a collection office. All they can give me was the actual statement with 3 letters that had no date when issued or signatures on them. Very disappointed that all they could worry about was this bill and not my feelings. So my wife and I found this dog yesterday in the middle of the street..this dog could hardly walk it was dragging its back feet so we stopped and I picked up the dog and I could feel the rib cage. When I looked into the dogs eyes both eyes had white goo all over it the dog couldn't even see..when I looked through the matted hair the dog had wounds all over the skin..the dogs paws were raw and had red rash under its belly..wasn't paying attention if it was a male or female so ...I don't know the sex of the dog..anyway..I rushed the dog to valley cottage animal hospital. I explain to them where I found the dog and ask them if they would please help this dog. I said is there any chance you're going to put his dog down they said that would be the last resort. They said they would try to get the dog better and it will go to Hi Tor animal shelter if it got better so I said can I call in a week to see how the dog is I would love to adopt this dog and give it the life it deserves. They said they couldn't give me any information on the dog if I was just releasing the dog into their care that I would have to call Hi Tor animal shelter every day to see if the dog was there. To make a long story short I called the animal hospital today to ask about the dog. And I was told that the owner came for the dog just after we had left and they gave the dog back to the owner, from what I was lead to believe after no medical attention was given. I was livid I said how could you give what appeared to be an abused dog back to the owner they said they had no choice. Valley cottage animal hospital claims that they never got the persons name or address that picked up the dog. But they were able to get my name my address for finding the dog this makes absolutely no sense. So my wife called animal cruelty and explained the situation. This makes absolutely no sense at all to me and I'm very mad and upset that this dog is back with an owner who clearly does not know how to take care of an animal. We were lead to believe the dog needed immediate medical attention but still they let the dog go to its owner without getting any information on the owner. In my opinion the animal hospital should be looked into for this mistake. It breaks my heart to see that someone can do this to an animal...omg I'm sooooo mad See More Read Less

For example, many expensive tests were prescribed for a cat that wouldn't eat. I then went home to think about things first, when lo and behold, I noticed a tooth now protruding from her mouth. The tooth fell out and the cat started eating again. On the whole, I am very impressed with the care my pets get here. I would not recommend the place based on my final experience when I had a very sick cat in their care. They would have milked my wallet and they lied to me when they said the cat was improving. When I got to see the cat, it was suffocating and I had Doctor Tortorice put the cat down and a ton of white fluid drained from my cats nose. That was the end for me. By the way, they also LIE to Yelp and have legitimate reviews scrubbed off..... take that for what it is worth. They are in big trouble and their reputation is damaged by their GREED and bad attitude. Thanks for the snarky answer.. you need to look at the date and not tell me I haven't been in your place in 15 years..... your math skills stink. Read Less

I brought my dog in as an emergency on Wednesday. The staff was kind and compassionate, my usual vet had already left for the day so we saw the emergency vet for that day. She did a thorough exam & diagnosed his problem and set up a treatment plan. I took my dog Zoe to this animal hospital for 15 1/2 years and have always found that the staff and doctors are compassionate, understanding and take the time to explain everything to you.  Perhaps people that complain about waiting for 30 min in the waiting room could give these drs a break, as they are spending quality time with you and your pet and you wouldnt want to be rushed.  The first 2 years of her life she had major surgery for eating carpet padding (didn't even realize it-she snuck under carpet when i was out) and the 2nd year for eating rocks!  They were marvelous.  Continued to go there until the end, I currently am devastated by having to say goodbye to our beautiful loving Zoe, she had a debilitating spinal condition, had lost 20 lbs and couldn't walk or stand any longer.  Dr.Collins came to our home to help put her out of her misery, both my husband and I were so upset and this doctor and her assistant were so comforting.  She reassured us that we were giving her the best gift possible, she consoled us and took her time talking with us.  They were extremely compassionate and were very gentle with our best friend.  As I sit here thinking of my beloved animal, I received a bereavement card in the mail, personally signed by the staff and a lovely note from Dr. Collins with a reminder that they have grief sections every month with a qualified counselor to help you get through this dificult time.If I were to get another dog, I would not hesitate to go here.  And yes, I think they are expensive but what do they saw "You get what you pay for", and they are worth it.  Get pet insurance, it certainly helped with the operations when she was a young pup.Jean R Read Less

It truly surprises me to read so many of these negative reviews. I have been taking my pets to Valley Cottage Animal Hospital for years, dogs and cats. As a pet sitter, I even had to rush one of my client's dogs here and I was treated with the same kindness and compassion I have always been extended. I have had a handful of true emergencies after hours and can honestly say that I haven't experienced the time and money issues that others have. Even with regular appointments, the wait time is minimal and they are happy to explain and breakdown the costs prior to any service. For my cats, Dr. Nicholson is the vet I choose. This doctor clearly loves animals, is extremely knowledgeable on felines and is just wonderful with them! She will talk with me about options, always giving me the choice on which path to take, but providing her recommendations. I have never been pressured or felt I was misdirected. I have always had excellent experience with Dr. Collins, as well,  who, over the years, has taken great care of my dogs and other pets. She, in particular, was the doctor who treated my cat, Willie, years ago in an emergency when I rushed him in moaning and his face swelling. Ultimately, he had to be put to sleep, but she wasted no time calmly ushering us into the nearest room and taking care of Willie quickly and with ease so he didn't suffer. She then turned to me and advised me not to worry about payment at that time, as she could see my distress over the situation. They billed me days later and sent a condolence card as well. In fact, they send paw prints of my animals who have passed with condolences every time. They even helped me years ago when I brought in a number of cats that needed spaying/neutering due to a litter born to a stray in my yard. They discounted me and Dr. Collins provided me with medication for one of them (for an infection) at no cost. I tend to stick with these 2 doctors if I can, though we have seen Dr. Downing in the past and she was good as well. I feel for all of those who had negative experiences, but I really want to stress that the many, many times I have been to Valley Cottage have been good ones. I trust them, they are up-to-date in their procedures and facility and I feel they want the best for my pets. They receive excellent care here. Shout out to the vet assistants as well, who are always kind and sweet to my babies. Be sure to speak up about a cost break-down. They have always been accommodating when I have asked about options and costs. Read Less

Even one star seems to be too much. I brought my rabbit to see Dr. Maidhof on Saturday afternoon, after she had seen her primary doctor earlier in the day and was diagnosed with early GI stasis. She had gotten a bit worse, and there were no hospitals closer to us with a doctor available to see her, so our hope was to have her get fluids and antibiotics. The doctor insisted on giving her pain medication as well, which I was hesitant to agree to as she was already depressed but I was assured it was safe and he would dose her low. Her temperature was low, as well. At no point were we told that her prognosis was poor. At no point were we encouraged to hospitalize her or even to try and warm her up. They did not bring in heat discs. Someone even started vacuuming outside of the exam room - where a sick and scared rabbit was. The recommendations were bloodwork (which wouldn't be in until Tues/Weds) or radiographs, which he felt were not warranted because he did not feel anything obstructive but could be done to rule it out. I declined both as my rabbit was not even handled appropriately - on several occasions, she was left uncovered and unattended on the exam table despite that I said she was typically nervous when she was feeling well. When taking her temperature, they held her up in the air with her back curled and her face uncovered. The fluids she was given didn't appear to be warmed, which was also concerning. Lola died on the ride home, 15 minutes after leaving, after becoming recumbent and developing shallow breathing. I recognize she was ill. My issue is that, as said, at no point were we told that the doctor was concerned about her prognosis. There was very minimal communication. When I called the hospital to let them know she had passed, I was put on hold for an extended period of time in which two people asked why I was on hold. I was then told that the Doctor was "in a procedure" and the receptionist "didn't know when he would be free or if he would be free". They asked the issue, and I explained it again and was told they would "go talk to the doctor". I hung up after another extended hold. He called several hours later and expressed that he was highly concerned about her temperature and overall state when he saw her and did not feel she was going to pull through regardless. The call was disconnected and I did not hear back. This practice left a very, very bad taste in my mouth. Things may not have turned out differently with Lola, but it is just terrible that I can wonder if they could have been if I had been to a different practice. Read Less

do not come here. they don't care about the animals, they just want to make money. they don't even know what they're doing. I called last morning because my sphynx cat had a premature kitten. the doctor kept questioning how I know this is a premature, etc, because I sound young, instead of telling me what to do in the late morning hours where everything is closed. she eventually said I either have the option of hand feeding or leaving the kitten there for a minimum of $3000. I had picked / bought formula for the baby and followed her instructions. I went to petsmart today for any other formula and they said god forbid I continued what the doctor instructed me. the amount of food, how long it wouldn't last, and how long I was told to keep giving it to the kitten meant basically infection and death. workers at PETSMART knew better than here AND nanuet emergency that didn't even want to deal with my situtation. horrible! Jeez, I don't know how all of these bad reviews got here. My three well taken care of kitties have had nothing but a great experience here. I have taken my cats here for both check ups and minor emergencies. I love the doctors, it's great to work with doctors that truly care about their patients. They do all they can do to take care of our fur babies and do so with professionalism and sometimes some down right appreciation of their cute fuzziness. YES, it is expensive but to me, it's worth it as I know they are getting the best of care. Even the facilities and support staff are up to snuff and make you feel like this is no ordinary practice.... I almost feel like its people worthy :).My only critique is every time I go there seems to be an excess of vet techs talking and gossiping loudly in back, perhaps if they reduce their staff a bit they can save their clients a few bucks. In my opinion, the absolute worst. Will bleed you for every penny you have while doing what appears to be an absurd number of tests and recommending treatments that do not work. At the end of all that, as was the case with my cat, your animal might still be sick. (My cat had a urinary tract disorder, a very common ailment in male cats. I have taken my cats to VCAH for about a year and until two months ago, I would have highly recommended them.  My opinion changed after a young vet sutured a small sore on the neck of my healthy one-year-old cat. Within two days the area had turned into a gaping wound. I took her back and a different vet diagnosed an infected abscess related to the first wound and said it needed to drain and should not have been sutured. When I told the first vet one of her colleagues had diagnosed an infected abscess, she seemed shocked. She had no idea her own treatment may have made my cat's condition worse. She said she never mentioned other treatment options to me because, "You were so worried about money I knew you wouldn't want to pay for it. Besides, I have already given you a discount."There is more to this story but it's unbelievable. The upshot is my cat had to be hospitalized and it took more than two weeks for the abscess to heal.  If this was a misdiagnosis, I can understand - no one is perfect. But this vet refused to listen or to explain. Even though I took my cat to VCAH four times in five days she scolded me. She was dismissive when I asked questions and this interfered with my cat's treatment. I have owned pets for decades and I have never experienced a vet with such an attitude. There are some very good vets on the staff of VCAH. For example, when our kitten developed incurable FIP, Dr. Petro treated her with great compassion. But, more often than not, my pets have been treated by young, inexperienced vets although there are pictures of more senior vets on the website. I am disappointed because it was handy having a 24/7 vet in the area but I won't risk another visit to VCAH because of this traumatic experience. Read Less

I had a 24yr old cat that suffered a stroke... She needed to be put down. I called a half dozen facilities in Westchester County, where I live. While they all seemed pleasant and kind, not one of them was under $300.. I decided to try Rockland, and the first place that came up was Valley Cottage. They quoted me $103!! I spoke with them for a bit and scheduled an appointment. When we arrived with Sammy, they were involved, compassionate, caring and patient. We were completely satisfied with how they handled this most difficult situation, especially in light of the fact that they were hundreds of dollars less then all the Westchester quotes. But then, two days after the procedure we received a condolence card signed by the staff, as well as information to attend a complimentary bereavement sessions... And to boot, two cards with Sammy's PAWPRINTS!!!! As far as I'm concerned, and for far more than half the cost - this facility and it's staff will exceed all of your expectations to get you through this difficult time. BRAVO VALLEY COTTAGE!!! If you are looking for professional & compassionate care for your beloved pet, look no further than Valley Cottage Animal Hospital. After years of superb veterinary care for our pets from the vets & staff of VCAH, we recently moved from their service area to a different part of the country. Last Sunday afternoon, I was out for a walk in our new neighborhood with my dog, Toby, when an uncontrolled pit-bull attacked him. After the pit was pulled off, I checked Toby several times for injuries but it wasn't until Monday afternoon that it became evident a fast-moving infection was building in a hard-to-see bite wound. Since we had not yet established a relationship with the local animal hospital and it was a few minutes after their closing time, we were instructed to drive our sick dog to an emergency clinic over an hours drive away along unfamiliar rural (and pitch dark) roads. We feared it would be too much for Toby, so in a panic, I called Dr Collins. Even though we are technically no longer active clients, Dr. Collins did not hesitate to instruct me what to do, then called in a prescription for an antibiotic to a local drug store. The escalating infection and fever was halted within hours. There are no words to express my gratitude to Dr Collins for being there in our hour of need for our beloved dog, as she and the staff of VCAH have always been for our pets throughout the years we lived near them. PS: Lesson learned:If your pet is attacked, always bring it to a vet immediately to check for injury! Read Less

After many years we recently got a new English Shepard dog and since VCAH is so close to our home and is open 24 hours a day I thought we would give them a try as our new Vet. Well I can say I am very very happy we made the choice and Dr. Nicholson has been amazing with our dog. He was sick when we first got him and Dr. Nicholson saw us immediately and took the best care of him. She was available for phone calls when we had a question and even called to follow up on how he was doing. We just went back to have him neutered and microchipped and again Dr. Nicholson took great care with him and once again followed up on his well being. She truly loves animals which is apparent by the way she greets, cuddles and talks to the dog whenever we go there. The entire staff has always treated us with the greatest respect and always always answers any questions or helps whenever they can. True sometimes it gets a bit busy but it must be for a reason, no one stays that busy without patients!!! Nothing is inexpensive these days and to be honest I have found their prices so far to be fair and just in case something should happen we now carry insurance for the dog. I was there last night for 2.5 hours and left without treatment for my dog.  I called at 5:00pm to say that I had an 11 lb maltipoo that had stomach issues, had not eaten or taken fluid for 48 hours and was no longer producing urine.  They gave me an appointment for 9:00pm, this should have put me off immediately but it didn't.  They have treated my other dog in the past for stomach issues, $2,500.00 the first time and $5000.00 the second, so to say that they are expensive is an under statement.I got to my appointment at 8:50 pm, I was finally placed in a room at 10:40pm, and then left there for 30 minutes.  I was the last person in the place, I asked the receptionist what was going on, she returned and told me that the vet was wrapping a wound on a cats tail.  Now obviously this cat was there a for an extended period of time because it was not brought in while I was there, so really, you leave an emergency animal waiting while you perform routine wound care.  At that point I left, my previously lethargic dog was walking around a little, I brought him home, put two syringes of water into him, and I will take him to my own vet today. Each time that I have been there, the wait time has been ridiculous, the treatment has been expensive, and they try to pressure you into test after test after test.  They did this with my other dog the last time to the tune of $5,000.00 and the dog was 13 years old.  I know I should blame myself, but when you are so attached to a pet it is easy to not think rationally when they appear to be in pain.   Anyway, needless to say, I will not return, only sorry I didn't read some of these other truly terrible reviews before I made my first visit there 4 years ago. Awful experience. Took our young (1+ yrs) dog there due to recent sudden exercise intolerance. When we first walked in, I noticed there was urine on the floor and only later realized that it was from my dog who was so scared he peed on the floor! My dog is well socialized and always curious and friendly, and he has seen several vets with everyone always commenting on his sunny demeanor. It just goes to show how much fear he sensed as soon as we walked into this place. The vet we saw was very young straight out of vet school, and clearly was just there to make a buck, with absolutely no connection to animals. She barely listened to what I told her was wrong with him, got things wrong multiple times and merely rattled down a list of expensive tests she can run, getting annoyed when I declined them. When I questioned her on the potential for certain infectious diseases, she rattled off book knowledge, clearly missing the ability to apply it to her patients. Being a PhD scientist myself, I was floored by her lack of knowledge and understanding of basic disease principles. We agreed that she would run a blood panel and she wasn't even able to draw blood - kept poking and poking our poor pup who was at this point clearly in distress, and ended up taking him to the back to finish the job. When she brought the dog back out 30+ minutes later he was panting and completely stressed out. We ended up being there for almost 4 hours (!!!!), and we did not come in for an emergency but had a regular appointment, and when we asked whether we could return for the recommended x-ray the following day seeing the length of time we had spent there already due to her inability to juggle her workload were told we had to pay again. Upon reading her doctor's notes (which were not even accurate for the most part), which I had requested for my reference, it was very clear that she was trying to sell us on many expensive tests and was very upset by me asking detailed questions and not buying into her pitch. The best part was that when I requested a copy of the blood work, which according to the vet was perfect, there were some clear signals in the blood work, which I would have never known about had I not asked to see the results. Needless to say, I went to a different animal hospital to get a second opinion and had a completely different, entirely positive experience at much more reasonable rates (VCAH is outrageously expensive, even during regular house). Another dog owner mentioned to me that they wanted to amputate his dog's leg  at VCAH. The owner took his dog elsewhere and the dog still has his leg and is walking normally.  Bottom line - if you want a caring vet and not get ripped off, I would recommend staying away from VCAH. Awful, awful practice!!! Read Less

Valley Cottage Animal Hospital at 202 Route 303 in Valley Cottage, NY is all about the money and their bottom line. We brought our beloved, healthy Rottweiler in for a wellness exam and her annual vaccinations. A few days later, our dog was unable to walk, in excruciating pain and no longer eating. We took her back to Valley Cottage Animal Hospital, where they wasted her precious time taking x-rays, ultrasounds and claiming she most likely had a tumor or cancer. They sent us home with oral medications knowing full well she was not able to eat. Hours later we rushed her back because she was vomiting and her leg had swollen up to 3x its normal size at the injection site (from the vaccinations administered by Valley Cottage Animal Hospital days before). We believe at this point they administered nothing more than pain medication, but only after wasting more time insisting they review their ignorant estimate of costs with us. After admitting/leaving our baby at the hospital and while driving home at 2:30 a.m., the hospital asked that we return to give them a $500 deposit toward the estimated bill (after we already paid about $1,000 earlier in the day). The next morning we transferred our dog to Cornell University Veterinary Specialists where she was immediately diagnosed with a sepsis infection and began treatment. How can one doctor so clearly diagnose a life threatening infection when the doctors at Valley Cottage Animal Hospital insisted it was either cancer or a bad reaction to the vaccinations? Sadly and tragically, our baby died at Cornell from complications stemming from the infection she received at her wellness visit at Valley Cottage Animal Hospital. Valley Cottage Animal Hospitals incompetence in recognizing their unfortunate mistake cost our dog valuable time, unbearable pain and suffering, and in the end her precious life. Our dog would still be alive if we never took her to Valley Cottage Animal Hospital. The doctors at Valley Cottage Animal Hospital either lied to us or were grossly incompetent. While our baby lie dying on a stretcher waiting to be transferred, they were still denying any wrong doing, insisting it was our dogs fault (her immune system fighting the vaccine), and their top priority at that moment was making sure they received payment on the small balance due on the bill. They never showed an ounce of compassion, never said or did the right thing their concern was getting paid and insisting we take our dying dog out the back door, not the front lobby. If you love your pet, please stay away from Valley Cottage Animal Hospital because THEY ARE ONLY CONCERNED WITH MONEY.Read Less

I have been a client of VCAH since they first opened.  They are accessible 24/7, and for that I am appreciative.  Having had a sick Bichon for 14 years, with diabetes, heart murmur, high blood pressure, renal failure, pancreatitis, cataract surgery, because of their expertise, she lived as comfortable a life as possible.  Costs are high everywhere.  I now have insurance on my Havanese, and use Care Credit for interest free payments.  Every vet knew my dog, I tend to gravitate to Dr. Atkins or Dr. Collins, but I have never been disappointed.  We were able to visit my dog late at night while she was hospitalized.  I used Costco for my of my Rx for my Bichon.  You get the best care, I will always stay with them.

When you want serious, knowledgeable, first-rate care for your pets, Valley Cottage Animal Hospital will surpass your expectations. I have had some very poor experiences at some other Rockland vets. For example, many expensive tests were prescribed for a cat that wouldn't eat. I then went home to think about things first, when lo and behold, I noticed a tooth now protruding from her mouth. The tooth fell out and the cat started eating again. On the whole, I am very impressed with the care my pets get here. I have also taken advantage of their 24 hour emergency care.  My latest appointment was with Dr. Collins who is just as caring a person as she is skilled, a very good choice if you have a cat. So grateful to Dr. Maidhof for his great care and expertise in exotic animals. I took my one year old dwarf hamster to Valley Cottage Animal Hospital at 7:30am this morning after I noticed she had labored breathing and was making a strange clicking noise. Understandably I was freaking out so early in the morning trying to find a vet that was open before 8am. I called VCAM and thankfully they offer 24 hour care. They were so nice over the phone and told me to come right over. They put my baby on oxygen and administered antibiotics. She's doing much better and I have Dr. Maidhof to thank. To say that she is an amazing Dr just doesn't describe enough how fabulous she is! The techs and front desk staff are also absolutely wonderful. I heard that VCAH got some award the other day. I find that hard to believe. If they were to get an award, it should be how many vets come and go at this place and the vet practice with the highest rates for services. I was a customer from 1987-2008. They were very high priced in comparison to the other vet practice I used before moving out of the area. Read Less

Read Less

I went to petsmart today for any other formula and they said god forbid I continued what the doctor instructed me. the amount of food, how long it wouldn't last, and how long I was told to keep giving it to the kitten meant basically infection and death. workers at PETSMART knew better than here AND nanuet emergency that didn't even want to deal with my situtation. horrible! Read Less

Read Less

All this hospital cares about is money. Horrible communication and very little compassion and understanding. This is the first review I've given on Yelp because they're service is so bad. I wish I would have read reviews before I brought or should I say BOUGHT my dogs here. But who thinks about money when they're pets are in need of emergency care? DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR BUSINESS. TRUST ME.Read the other reviews posted as well.

Just like us humans, you never now what will happen and insurance is a necessity. Read Less
