I had been looking for a practical, cost-effecive, caring vet for a long time and am very happy to have found Dr Redman.  We have been using him for about 10 years and his level of caring and communication is excellent.  He lays out options but doesn't push expensive interventions, diagnostics, or procedures.  He doesn't do x-rays, ultrasounds, or have many technologies -- he''ll send you to another vet for those procedures. He takes away my anxieties about choosing to ride out our pets' illnesses and injuries when appropriate.  Thank you to this old-school, no-nonsense, practical, caring, and helpful vet! Read Less

Dr. Redman obviously cares way more about your pet's health and your sanity as a pet owner than he does about making a buck, and that's why we'll keep going to him for as long as we're in the area. My most memorable interaction with Dr. Redman was when our dog was having digestive woes, and he asked us to bring in a stool sample. He picked it apart on the examining table with us in the room and explained what the, uh, stuff in the stool meant for our dog's digestive issues. It wasn't pretty but he did it without charging us and now we know what to look for when our pupper isn't feeling well. Other great things about Dr. Redman: he has dispensed advice for minor problems over the phone without making us go in for an appointment. He is very honest about what treatments are necessary and which ones are not, as well as when you should be worried and when you should relax and let nature take its course. He's a bit strange to talk to but not in an off-putting way. As I said, you can tell he really cares about your animal. And the rest of his staff are very warm and friendly, too. Read Less

I feel like this place and their "old school, father-knows-best vibe" is polarising... I was not a fan. I want to let prospective patients know how this place is and not be blinded by only positive reviews and then be very disappointed during a visit.Dr. Redman prides himself on not doing any diagnostic tests and just blankets his own dogs (by his own account) in de-worming medicine regardless of the situation. He recommended we do the same nonsensical thing with our dogs. He is very old-fashioned, as others have mentioned and apparently liked, but to me it came off as an unwillingness to consider new information/drugs on the market, which is not an ok sentiment to have as a healthcare provider (to dogs or humans). No one in the office was rude, just inefficient (no computerized database, which led to confusion over handwriting at another vet). If this kind of place jives with you - that's awesome. Our dogs had a good time; I have no doubt that Dr. Redmond loves animals and wants to do good by them, but I cannot agree with his attitude. Read Less

I was very tempted to come here based on these reviews to find a vet for my cat, whom I just moved with these past two months here. However, I called them beforehand just in case it wasn't suitable -- unfortunately I didn't get to speak with Dr. Redman who sounds like a very good doctor, but with a female dr. whom I can't recall the name of, and by god she was rude. Before I even got to explain the situation with my cat and finish asking my question, she continuously cut me off and immediately berated me for how I treated my cat because he was being aggressive to the other kitty who lives in our place. I was spraying him with water, because isn't that the least harmful thing you could do to a cat who was attacking a kitten?! I did not even finish speaking, and when I cut her off to explain more, she interrupted again by saying "I was still talking." Yes, well, so was I, and she didn't even know what my questions were yet.By the way, "you should google why he's behaving this way" is the most stupid and unprofessional answer I have ever heard of. Is that even what a real vet should say? Why did she think I called the hospital instead? She also told me not to bother taking the cat in for a medical check-up which I appreciate for honesty, but at the same time, google will never give me the answers I'm looking for.If she was more polite and answered my questions, I would have immediately come here because I know not only does she care for my pets and problems, but she also respects me as an owner. She made me feel incredibly offended and I haven't even gotten the chance to come to this hospital. Call me childish and whiny, but I would have been a potential customer, and I hate leaving bad reviews to a place that could have been great if one person didn't immediately make it an awful experience. Dr. Redman is the best! Diesel and I have been seeing him since he was adopted. Dr. Redman has kindly guided me through everything - from vaccines, to food selection, to flea medication, panicked calls about diarrhea and itching bald spots. Diesel is my first dog, and I feel so much more confident knowing Dr. Redman is in my corner. I can feel that he truly loves and cares for the animals. You can see it from the homemade beef treats in the waiting room to the way he handles the animals, remembers their names, and the copious amounts of time he spends explaining things. He focuses a lot on preventive care, which is so important and not the most common these days. On another note, he is affordable, fair, and honest. As a grad student on a budget, I definitely appreciate that. He's referred Diesel to a dermatologist and even though he examined him, he didn't charge us for a visit. We've also been able to get him on the phone, saving us an office visit. I know how hard it is to find an honest, kind, and competent veterinarian. Diesel and I are truly lucky to have happened upon Dr. Redman and his staff at Vine Veterinary. Read Less

We REALLY like Dr. Redman. He's very down to earth, explains his professional opinions very thoroughly, and doesn't ever recommend anything unnecessary. He much prefers to treat non-disease problems through environment and behavior before suggesting meds (for example, allergies); that being said, he was open to putting our dog on a med that was the only real option for treating her urinary incontinence, but explained to us how we could gauge the minimum amount she could take to effectively treat the issue - that is, he was suggesting that we not overmedicate her with the 'prescribed amount' if less would work just fine. When our dog cracked a nail, he removed it but didn't want to put her on prophylactic antibiotics because dogs have been licking their wounds for millennia... I really appreciated that because of all the problems that over-prescribing of antibiotics has caused - that being said, if actual signs of infection develop he will THEN prescribe antibiotics, which is entirely reasonable.Another reviewer called him 'old school' and I agree and I LOVE that about him. He's not the kind of vet who will guilt you into anything just to make a buck, and I've certainly run into that with other vets. He's not into over-testing, but when he does suggest a test, he'll explain it and why he wants to do it, and it totally cool about you saying 'no.' I hope he never retires! Read Less

I really like Dr R's way of explaining things honestly and in detail. But best is his rapport with our dogs. Last year our nearly 12 yr old Rhodesian Ridgeback female got bone cancer, and he helped us medicate for pain, and euthanize when pain was no longer controllable. As we put her on the table, Dr Redman assured her that she would have no more pain. Literally as he put the needle in the vein, she licked his face. Dogs know.Read Less

We have been taken our three dogs to Dr. Redman for almost two years and did varieties of procedures including wellness check-up, vaccine boost, deworm, heart worm treatment, allergy test, dental cleaning, and potential tumor diagnose. Dr. Redman, the primary vet in this clinic, is a smart, experienced and down-to-earth vet who does not waste any of your time and money. His old-school style is not only practical but almost...charming. We and our pups always have a pleasant time visiting his clinic. Here are a few things he does to make our life easy: 1. Q&A on the phone without charge: When we have doubt we are encouraged to call first. It saves the appointment fee (which is ~$45), and more importantly, our time and his time. He sometimes makes suggestions on treatment we can do at home, which ended up working multiple times. We also do all of our heartworm preventative prescription on the phone. 2. Walk-in and Pick-up without appointment fee: Dr. Redman offers walk-in between 10AM-1PM, six days a week for shots and prescription pick-up. If it is just booster shots or annual deworm treatment, we can come in during the hour and get it done in a few minutes. And again we do not need to pay the appointment fee. 3. Good record keeping and reminder in timely manner: The information of pets are cross referenced to their owners' names in the clinic, so they are aware other pets you have when you call about one pet. And they do make an effort on synchronizing regular visits for different pets to save owner's time. When we got a new dog last year, they recommended to bring the dog in for the first round treatment/check-up when we came in to get the annual shots for another dog, so their schedule can be synchronized and we only need to come in with both dogs once a year. We also get reminders about all the shots in mail 2~3 weeks ahead of time. 4. Relatively cheap and no sales: $45 per visit (if you need to see Dr. Redman) is cheap. If we do have an acute condition, this is not a price we will hesitate on. Dental cleaning for our 10-year-old westie, who never had a cleaning and has been on wet food, is ~$160. We got quote for 3~4 times as much elsewhere, probably because most clinics do it under full anesthesia. And the result was great. I never tried their boarding service, but the price is very reasonable in the area. They do not send ads via email or mail, and we never feel pressured to buy anything when we were there. When the dogs are treated, Dr. Redman will not only list all the treatment options to let us choose, but also recommend the generic drugs first. 5. All the employees in the clinic are professional and nice. My dogs come in without fear and leave happily, with no negative feelings about vet. They are also quick - I almost never wait more than 5 minutes there for any procedure except the teeth cleaning. We recommend him to everyone we know. I think good practice brings him enough business that he actually prefers getting each business done quickly and clean, just like our hospital should have done. His philosophy and approaches saved our money and his time. What a win-win. Surprisingly, he also spends enough time with us when needed without rushing into the next appointment. We just adore him. I've been taking my cats and dog to Dr. Redman at Vine Vet since 1999, and I have never been anything but thrilled with him - I strongly recommend him to all of my friends. He's such a good guy and really cares about the animals he treats (and their owners). He looks out for his patients and ways to save them money (even if it means less profit for him). For example, when I called him about an eye injury in my cat, he told me not to bother bringing her in to see him, because he was fairly sure he was going to refer me to an animal eye doc, and I should save my money (and time) and just call the eye doc directly.  He is always happy to talk over the phone (sometimes in lieu of needing to visit), and he's cheery and friendly with me and the animals. He also has time slots where you can drop in for shots without an appointment, and you can drop your pet off before work for a checkup and pick them up after work. His team does grooming and boarding as well. Also, I've never had trouble getting a prompt appointment. I can't recommend him highly enough. Read Less

Dr. Redman is an old school kind of vet. The kind where you can call for advice, and he's happy to talk over the phone. When my 15 year old rottie was bleeding out of her nose, his advice was not to bring her in for tests. Rather, let her be and only bring her in if she was in pain. When she was eating gravel (!) they gave us the options of tests (blood and otherwise) or switching up her food to see if that was a cheaper and easier fix. This is no fancy-pants vet, which I like. They always match the price on flea and heartworm meds if you find it cheaper elsewhere. I also boarded my 2 dogs there for 2 weeks and they were totally loved on and well cared for. Dr. Redman is straight-forward, does not do unnecessary vaccines or procedures, and gives you advice on how to save money. He healed an abscess that her previous vet could not and did not make her wear a cone, as the other vet did. He said it wasn't needed because of the location. Made the cat much happier! He even answers the phone himself when he can. He calls you personally to discuss things rather that having another person relay a message. I have been to vets who seem to just want money. Dr, Redman is not like that at all. I have brought her in for annual vaccinations and he told me which ones she no longer needed due to her age. Other vets would give the vaccines anyway. My only (sort of) complaint is that he does not have a specialist there weekly to provide ultrasounds or X-rays. He refers his clients to Triangle Veterinary Emergency Clinic, which costs $150 just to walk into the door. This is only a 'sort of' complaint because I like the fact he will admit it if he does not feel comfortable monitoring a condition or disease. For the well-being of the animal, he is willing to send them to specialists. Read Less

Dr. Ken Redman and his staff are the best. Our Samoyed, Portia, was 12 years old when we moved to Chapel Hill from Virginia. She started to have problems with her hips, bladder and bowel control, as well as skin and ear issues. Since she was already an old lady, Dr. Ken was terrific about understanding that we didn't want to be overly aggressive in her treatments. So we tried a lot of different approaches. Some were helpful and some were not, but I felt like we were completely in synch with how to proceed. We also boarded Portia at Vine when we travelled since they gave her her own room, dispensed her myriad of medications, had the special food there, and did not charge us extra for the extra work in cleaning up after her ""indiscretions."" They bathed and groomed her. We felt like she was very well taken care of in her last years of life. We'll be getting another dog soon, and Dr. Redman will be the first person we take our new puppy to!

Read Less
