I visited this vet on a recommendation from a friend after wanting to change from a previous, very good veterinarian I had used for over a decade with three dogs. Compassion is a small older shop/house, not as boujee as the new super trendy vet hospitals popping up around Charlotte, which is fine, but is it quaint or is business slow?  Staff was all very friendly, they do have free roaming "house" cats, like some vets do. I met with various staff over three visits, and was never discouraged. Friendly. Knowledgeable. Caring. My only gripe is Monetary. Each visit was a little pricey, with "extra" must do's or he needs, let's check this items. For a surgery I was quoted a said price, that oddly increased two hundred dollars the morning of said surgery. When questioned, they had forgotten item A and an error on item B on the initial quote......Really?  Embarrassing way to run a business.  Honor the price you give a customer, which they didn't.  I love my animal and I will not be returning to this facility. I wish them well and hope you found this review helpful. Read Less

Don't trust the 5 star reviews. We went their a few times with our two late dogs. The vet ignored us and did a test for hypothyroid on our very senior girl who was already on several medications. Told her not to do the test because even if she had low thyroid we wouldn't add more medications to her system. The bill was higher than usual and the place was packed, people waiting behind us. Just after paying & starting to leave a tech came running and said "you forgot Kimmie's meds". I asked "what meds"? Answer - - for her low Thyroid. I said "I specifically told vet not to test for it, we wouldn't give her another medication at that age (like 16. . .) Called when we got home -- they refused to refund the medication. Got a 2nd opinion and vet said "any vet who knows what they are doing would know that testing for low Thyroid when a dog is on Phenobarbital is a waste as 99% of the times they will test positive whether they have it or not". Emailed her what 2nd vet said and she wrote back SCREAMING at me, how dare I question her word, etc. etc. she went on forever. A real "loose canon".  Do yourself and your pet a favor and really ask around before you choose a local vet. This was a while ago, and that experience still upsets me! Read Less

Compassionate Care is exactly what you get! I love all the staff here! Everyone is knowledgeable and provides detailed explanations of everything. They provide pricing before services are completed, so if you don't like the price (like several other reviewers have complained about) then you don't have to commit. The best vet and service I have ever received and I will never go anywhere else. Both Dr. Johnson and Dr. Webb truly care about the animal they are caring for! Great follow up, great personable service, and amazing relationships. The receptionist staff is also wonderful and always very kind and supportive. Best vet I have ever been to. Read Less

We've been taking our high maintenance pups here for many years. I can't speak to their prices, because I've never comparison shopped. But we've always been so happy with them; I've never felt the need. Dr. Birch is our main doctor and we love her. Last time we went in we saw Dr. Hendren and loved her too. Docs, vet techs, front desk - everyone here is great. Another thing I love about them is they are email capable. I can email them a question, a prescription request, whatever - they always get back to me quickly. I love everyone at Compassionate Care! I can't think of a more appropriate name for this clinic! Dr. Birch, AND the vet techs, were always so loving to my cat, Red. When Red was diagnosed with a tumor in his abdomen, Dr. Birch kindly walked me through his treatment options, with a focus on quality of life. She never once pressured me to choose the "latest-and-greatest" technology or other expensive treatments. Her guidance resulted in eleven months of quality life for Red, more than I had ever hoped for. And when it was time to let him go, Dr. Johnson was the one assisted us (Dr. Birch was on maternity leave). She was so gentle and caring! She brought Red a pillow to lie on, and fed him lots of kitty treats. Then, after he quietly passed over the rainbow bridge, she let us spend as much time as we needed to say goodbye. It was the best euthanasia experience I have ever had. I want to also give kudos to the office staff. They always took the time to converse with this nervous mother of a sickly cat. I also had pet insurance, and they always processed my claim forms both quickly and cheerfully.. And let's not forget Marilyn and Monroe, the office cats! Marilyn is always ready and willing to let you stroke her fur, whether it's to quiet your nerves or just to say "hi!" Monroe? Well, it was fun to pull up in front of the building and see him staring out the office window at you! I'm sure he's saying "Welcome, welcome!" when he sees you! LOL! I wish I hadn't had to move away. I was looking forward to a long history of compassionate care for all of my fur babies, present and future! These are people that truly care. They go above and beyond for you and your furry families. I'm so grateful that when we moved here we chose them. Even before we were patients, we had an episode where our chihuahua hit his head early in the morning and we just stopped in on our way to an emergency vet when we noticed they were open. They checked him out, (despite their busy morning schedule) and we left knowing that our dog was okay and what to watch for. We just lost a really amazing dog yesterday. They (especially Dr. Birch -formerly Dr. Hessey- because he was her patient) absolutely helped us get an "extra" 3 weeks of really normal, happy, quality time with Mica... despite his cancer. I couldn't ask for anything more than that. They all sincerely grieved with us when we had to set him free. They have gone above and beyond the call of duty for us over and over and over. Everyone there is absolutely great and wonderful and invested in their patients. I'm so glad we have a vet we can trust with our precious family pets. Every one of those vets at Compassionate Care has helped us tremendously in person and many times over the phone at one time or another. On September 4th 2015 I placed a call into the office of compassionate care due to a refill for flea and heartworm medication being denied from their online store. I asked the receptionist why this request was denied, and she said because she is due for a heartworm test in October, I kindly asked why I wouldn't be able to get at least this months supply. She replied well we can do that and for October but that's it until she gets her test done, in a very snarky short manner. I replied that I am considering taking my dogs elsewhere, she then said okay. Not once during this whole conversation did she offer to set up an appointment, or place the order for the 2 month supply she said I would be able to get. I have been taking my dogs there for a little over a year, and I don't feel like they know what customer service is. I would not recommend anyone go to this veterinarians office.Read Less

My first experience with Compassionate Care Veterinary Hospital of Charlotte was outstanding! Our little miniature Schnauzer Tucker had been vomitting for 7 days (on day 5 he vomitted up a good amount of a dog toy rope that our younger dog must have "deconstructed"), and our "home" veterinary clinic (whom we love) referred us to Compassionate Care when their xray machine was being repaired. From the moment we walked into the veterinary hospital, we were greeted warmly and made to feel welcome. Everyone expressed genuine concern for our sweet dog, and we knew we were in good hands. The xray tech Emily was wonderful. It was obvious that she adores dogs, and Tucker was immediately comfortable with her. The office administrator asked if I wanted to go home for the hour they would be keeping Tucker for the second set of barium test xrays. When they were finished, I was promptly called by Dr. Hendren, the attending veterinarian. She was just as wonderful, asking if I wanted to see the xrays. She had been in touch with our vet concerning the xrays (knowing that if surgery to remove any blockage was required, Tucker would be transferred back to Matthews Animal Clinic for the procedure). Dr. Hendren and Emily had already sent the xrays to our vet at Matthews Animal clinic, and she explained that she believed Tucker did not have a blockage remaining (the rope most likely caused the initial problem and then created irritation in his stomach which led to more vomitting). However, she graciously deferred to our vet for the final decision. Additionally, Dr. Hendren advised that I return the next afternoon (24 hours later) for follow-up xrays to be sure the barium had been fully processed. We did so, and she was elated to show me those xrays as well, while still graciously deferring to our vet for a final diagnosis. Emily burned a disc with the xrays for us, and our vet talked with us and confirmed that he agreed fully with Dr. Hendren's diagnosis. Tucker did not have any remaining obstruction, and he would be fine. To top it all off, one of the xray techs that second visit came out to the waiting area to ask if they could clip Tucker's nails while he was being treated, and two days following that visit Dr. Hendren left a voicemail checking on him and wanting to make sure he was doing well. Wow! We truly could not have asked for a more professional, compassionate or attentive staff than those we encountered at Compassionate Care Veterinary Hospital of Charlotte. I highly recommend them, and we will always be thankful for their intervention when our little "furry baby" was sick and needing medical care. Read Less

Absolutely amazing- I swear I will never go anywhere else. I went in today with my two baby rats, one with an abscess and one with respiratory issues. I was a little nervous because I know vets don't always see rats often, and they're only 18 weeks so they're still very young. EVERY one of the staff members was enthusiastic to have us as patients. The doctor and her assistant we're loving and patient with my babies. They allowed them all the time they needed to calm down, as it was their first vet visit and were very nervous. They pet and played with my rats, even baby-talked to them like I would! They were so kind and gentle, and I ant imagine getting the same experience anywhere else. The facilities were quaint and clean, not even an ounce of pet fluff to be seen! Believe it or not for once the name fits. also do keep in mind that 4 stars from George R. equals 7 or 8 stars from most Yelpers. This is a tough one, often when you visit a vet it's for sad reasons, which was the case for this visit. Big C, really sucks.  We first went to this vet because it was close by, then we've been back because the vibes are really really good. Both the vet and her assistant have INCREDIBLE DOG SIDE MANNERS. Between my rescue dogs and my parents adoptive pets I've been seeing vets all too often over the years and the norm always is ... LET ME OUT!! Let's go home now, now? I'm scared ... now? now! Let me climb on your lap! At this clinic rather than picking up the beasts to place them on a table both the nurse and the vet get down and dirty on the floor and the dogs love it!!  Check out the photos of Nana my Yellow Lab during her examination, and no they're not staged. I can't say from a medical aspect that this doc is better or worse than another, but other than making both Nana and Charlie ( Shepherd/Airdale +whatever mix)   incredibly comfortable she also definitely gave me the impression of being totally competent. The practice is run very professionally, the exam is $50 then everything else runs up a la carte, which I was presented with ahead of time. Yeah this can run into some serious money but I don't think their prices are excessive overall and the advice that I was given on the best course to take has been very down to earth and sensible so far ... unlike some Animal Hospital in West Palm Beach that pretended to give a damn and proceeded to try emptying my bank account because my mothers cats had .... fleas! Sorry that was then. It's an old building, but it's clean and freshly painted and although it's on Monroe  rd. there's nothing dingy or dreary about the practice itself.  I don't know about cats (yet) or little dogs but I definitely recommend this practice for treating good sized dogs. It seems to be pretty busy but not so that you can't get an appointment  for the next day if need be or to make serious follow up calls. Pretty impressive overall. Read Less

Read Less

They provide pricing before services are completed, so if you don't like the price (like several other reviewers have complained about) then you don't have to commit. But we've always been so happy with them; I've never felt the need. Dr. Birch is our main doctor and we love her. Last time we went in we saw Dr. Hendren and loved her too. Docs, vet techs, front desk - everyone here is great. Another thing I love about them is they are email capable.

Read Less

They pet and played with my rats, even baby-talked to them like I would! They were so kind and gentle, and I ant imagine getting the same experience anywhere else. The facilities were quaint and clean, not even an ounce of pet fluff to be seen! I've had two cats and have brought both of them to Dr. McGarry at Compassionate Care - she is absolutely marvelous with cats. This place has always treated my pets well and kept them in good health.

Everyone who works here is so dedicated to their job and you can tell they enjoy it. This is the only place I'll take my cats now! I know they're in good hands and will be treated like family. They still check up on my cat who was in for surgery a couple of months ago. I love how much they care about the pets that come through their doors. Read Less

Read Less
