I had my doubts about this animal hospital after reading some of the reviews and arriving to it. It is definitely the smallest animal hospital I have ever been to, but the level of care and concern was superb! I could tell that Dr. Sam cared about my cat simply by the way he handled him. It is obvious that he and his team care deeply for their furry clients. Also, Dr. Sam did numerous things, like a small exam and nail clipping, that other larger animal hospitals have charged me for in the past without my consent to do them in the first place. If you’re looking for a caring veterinary team and to support a small, phenomenal animal hospital, this is the one for you! Will definitely be taking my other cat and my dog to this clinic. Read Less

When moving, there are always a few professionals you hope to find that were as good as those you left: mechanic, dentist, veterinarian. I'll start off by saying that I relied heavily on the Google comments and ratings when I moved here in December, 17 for just about every choice I made. So, I write my reviews figuring I'm not the only one that does that. Jack, my 6-year-old Black Lab, is my companion and friend. He's had a rough early life, which included remova l of part of his bottom jaw because of cancer. Through it all, he's been stoic, gentle, and loving - as most labs are. So you can see why I want a good Dr. for him. After reading the reviews about Dr. Hanes and his 'old-school' approach versus the big-chain vets in the neighborhood, I took Jack to see him for some routine stuff. The staff and the Doc were fabulous. We've been back 3 times since, and Jack has a new Doctor. Hats off to Dr. Sam Hanes and the staff at Davis Lake! Read Less

Strictly for the fact that upon asking why they do not support raw-fed diets for my dog, they proceeded to say "Because that's just like humans eating raw meats". So, you're saying that that all dogs and their wolf predecessors had to cook their prey before eating? This is a red flag for a vet that just wants to make commission from selling a particular dog food -- dried dog food that has had all of the essential enzymatic nutrients cooked out, and uses filler from who knows where. I lost my lab in April, and I am convinced that it was because of the kibble. Only novice fools who know nothing about the most beneficial diet for a dog would go here -- must be why they're at the lake with the rich folks Read Less

I want to respond to the 1 star post that describes Dr. Sam as "coming off as not caring". I have been with this vet for more than 10 years, he has cared for 5 of my dogs, simple to series conditions, and even a cancer diagnosis. What seems to you as "not caring" is actually "not reactionary". In other words, if you are in a highly emotional state, he can lift you out of your frantic hole without jumping in there with you. This is actually the sign of a tremendously caring, controlled personality. He is a consumate professional. He listens and is there with a calm voice of reason even when your world is falling apart as you try to make end of life choices for your pet. He respects people and cares for animals. Read Less

Two tails up!  I took both my goldendoodles to this vet and they were super happy.I have very healthy dogs so I only go to the vet once a year to get vaccinations and re-up my heart-worm, flea, tick etc. medicine. The staff are very friendly, but the waiting area is boring.  If they had more magazines, tv, or free wifi that would make my wait more pleasant.  I am being picky and very hard to please but I gave this place an A-OK rating and if you want to get beyond that you really have to please me.The vet explained what he was doing through each stage of the process.  I am an OCD control freak when it comes to these dogs and I want to know what is going on.  I also want to educate myself as a pet owner.  These are my first two pets in my entire life and I want to be perfect for them.  This vet stands above others with how well he explains what he is doing and what I should be looking out for as a pet owner. The office is very clean but I haven't seen much of it.  Your puppies are looked at in a front area and if there is any additional need they go in the back.  I didn't go into the back because this was a husband and wife outing with two dogs.  I stayed with one dog while the vet saw the other dog with my spouse. The parking lot is plenty large but it is loose gravel.  Nothing inherently wrong with that but if you have mobility issues you may not like the uneven earth. No notable puddles the day I visited.  I look for puddles and poop because these are two things my dogs like to explore.  If you aren't paying attention they will gladly drink a fetid puddle as if it were a fine wine.  As for poop - they don't eat it, instead they like to roll their necks and shoulders on it as if it were Chanel. The grounds were clean and this is a must for me.  I understand some owners don't pickup after pets but I didn't notice any droppings around. The prices on medicine were very reasonable here - some places I have been are a bit cheaper but most places have been much more expensive.  Great job on not gouging us pet owners. Dr. Sam Haynes left my parents' dog, Abbey, suffering in respiratory distress because of what he admits was a *non-emergency* ""family commitment"" -- one that took place in the middle of his scheduled office hours!! To defend himself, he kept saying, ""I'm just one person and I can't be here all the time,"" but surely you can be there DURING YOUR OFFICE HOURS. Abbey needed oxygen to stabilize her because she was suffering and couldn't breathe. Again, to defend himself, Dr. Haynes insisted that he doesn't ""even have an oxygen tank and couldn't have done anything."" Well, then why the crap are you our vet?! Answer: You're not anymore! Abbey was rushed to the emergency care center where she was lovingly and immediately stabilized and put to sleep by caring professionals. I'm sorry, but you don't leave for a NON-EMERGENCY ""family obligation"" DURING YOUR OFFICE HOURS while an animal in front of you suffers. I wish ""no stars"" was an option! Our 14-yr old poodle was a patient of Dr. Sam Haynes. This Saturday she had a severe attack with her Congestive Heart Failure. We rushed her to the vet (having called the night before, as she was not doing real well, to find they were open from 8-12 on that Saturday). Her breathing was suddenly irregular, her chest had audible crackles from across the room (her lungs had filled with fluid from a poorly pumping heart... I am an RN). Her mouth was open and her tongue was turning blue, but we made it to Davis Lake Animal Hospital and I told the receptionist that I thought it was time to put her to sleep. (her suffering was obvious and audible) and I was in tears. She said, ""I am sorry he can't see you. He has been trying to get out the door and this is his last patient."". (BTW it was 10:30 AM...well within office hours!) He takes off his lab coat and walks out... yellow shirt and all... right past our struggling 14-yr-old family member!! We were in shock, but had no time to argue. The receptionist said to take her to Carolina Veterinarian specialists in Huntersville. On the way, we phoned my daughter who gave us accurate directions. They met us at the door, rushed Abbey into an oxygen tent and made her comfortable. They did a full exam and let us chose whether to pursue TX or euthanize her. We said we thought it was time... the Dr said she absolutely agreed and thanked us for ""not letting her suffer"". She was brought to us (no longer gasping for air and putting her little paws out toward my husband (her ""daddy""). We held her, talked to her on a soft blanket, then she was given a sedative and anesthesia through an IV adaptor. She actually laid down and just went to sleep. As far as she knew, I think she thought we were done and she was coming home with Mommy & Daddy. I hope so, anyway. They put Abbey into a small ""coffin box"" securely fastened and gave her to us with a tiny heart drawn onto it and a compassionate ""I am so sorry"" attitude and told us to drive home carefully. (no doubt because they knew how much she meant to us and how distraught we were). I had been to Dr. Sam Haynes many times. He had given my dog too high of a dose of medication, once, which I told him about. He gave my daughter's dog a medication that small dogs were not supposed to have. (That is why she knew the directions for the other vet. place.) She now goes there. (Which I would give 10 stars to if possible.) I am very aware that Dr. Haynes might have had a real, severe, emergency. But not a word to us... Not.. ""I am heading here or there"" or ""I'm so sorry"".... just avoiding us and leaving! (Right in front of us!) I would not take a dog (pun intended) to Dr. Sam Haynes. Read Less

Sam Haynes. Read Less
