We chose this vet because Dr Gillus is a vet there and he owns a frenchie boston terrier mix.  Frenchies can have a lot of issues so we felt more comfortable.  But we'd heard positive things about the hospital as well.  We've been here several times since we bought fonzy and more recently fifi home and have been very pleased with the care they've been given.   We have seen two other vets too and they were great as well.  Great explanations and seems thorough.  I highly recommend you give this place a whirl for your pet's health care needs. The front desk staff is RUDE. Consistently rude, every time. They act as if doing their jobs is an annoyance to them and they are better than everyone else. I have four dogs and was at the practice a lot. After a procedure on one, I called in the morning and spoke to someone at the front desk to see if I could email a picture to have one of the vets look at it to see if I needed to bring them in. They said it was fine, and provided me an email address. After not hearing back from anyone all day, I called back late afternoon. A different person with whom I spoke said they had not seen it yet to pass along to the vet because they "hadn't opened email yet." I cannot tell you how many times I have called to leave a message for a vet and never heard anything back. I have heard them talk badly about other clients after they leave while I'm still standing at the counter numerous times. I have been belittled about my payment methods when I used Care Credit for amounts under $300 because I "can't finance it over six months." For the record, I paid my bill in full every single time so I'm not sure why the method of payment I use matters to them. As far as their pricing goes, I think they are pretty average for the area - meaning yes they're probably expensive, but they all are around here. That was not the reason I made the decision to take my dogs elsewhere, and I struggled with it because most of the vets are great. Unfortunately you have to be willing to deal with the staff at the front desk. I feel as though when you are paying good money for a service you should at least be treated with some amount of respect and not as a burden. When it came time for me to schedule annual visits for everyone and I was putting it off because I didn't want to call, I came to the realization it was probably time to move on. Read Less

DO NOT BOARD YOUR DOG AT REA RD ANIMAL HOSPITAL. My little Pug was seriously injured week of October 10, 2017 while boarding for 3 days. Lucy's left Cornea has a terrible cut and the cornea had fallen down in her eye. Unfortunately the cut extendes full thickness . HER EYE RUPTURED. The eye was bleeding into the eye. WHEN NO ONE KNOWS WHAT HAPPENED, SOMETHING IS SERIOUSLY NEGLIGENT and every other word I can use to describe THE PATHETIC CARE GIVEN HER. Had to take Lucy to an Emergency Opthamologist shortly after picking her up. Opthamologist performed emergency surgery. Dr. removed a large blood clot and a clot of inflammation before sewing cornea. My husband and I are beyond words to describe how we are feeling! DO NOT THINK YOU CAN TRUST THIS CLINIC. We will not bring our dogs back. I really loved the vet in boone but brought him to my familys vet here in charlotte when i moved back. First off they are very very expensive for an okay vet service. Anytime I am concerned about something they make it seem not that big of deal. But their front desk receptionist are so rude, the last 4 times (2 years) I have gone I have had terrible customer service. Only place in Charlotte requiring $80 (2x$40) flu vaccine to be boarded or groomed. Full stop. I cancelled my boarding for next weekend because of it when I was there for a vet visit. I figured "Ok they can still have my grooming business". Today they were groomed and they snuck in the flu vaccine fee (I signed grooming papers with two dogs in my hand, who knew there were vaccine costs too on the forms?). Here's the best part, when I was at the vet this past weekend, with boarding coming next weekend, the lady says, "you should get the booster now, it takes a couple days to take effect." I said No, we will board them elsewhere. Today for grooming, they decided that the dogs needed boosters. Literally gave the booster the same time they were grooming. This is nothing more than a racket. Do not go here. Read Less

My boy Barkley (he's the one in my profile pix) started going to Rea Rd when he was a puppy. We moved to LA, but when we returned we tried other clinics closer to home. Sadly, after going through 3 separate clinics that treated us more like dollar signs than people & pet we returned to Rea Rd. Unfortunately, cancer had taken a hold of Barkley's spleen. Rea Rd could have offered the multi thousand dollar surgeries, but instead Dr Smith treated all of us like we were part of the family. Barkley went to the Rainbow Bridge a few days later, but Rea Rd will always be our vets from here on out if we become pet owners again. Give them a chance, they are worth it. Read Less

We've been bringing our dogs here for over 3 years, and have received top-notch care from annual check-ups to surgeries to boarding. Dr. Dozier and Dr. Michael in particular are wonderful, caring and provide a level of excellence that I've not encountered before from any vet. In the past year, we've had to put down two senior dogs and the level of care that came from the entire staff was amazing - cards, hugs, tears, etc. This is a staff that truly cared about our animals, from check-in to vet tech to doctor. When we now bring our new puppy in, they pass him around and treat him like a king. We never worry about the level of care we will receive. It might be pricier than other animal hospitals, but the quality more than makes up for it. Read Less

Dr. Smith. ALL DAY. She is by far the best vet that I have seen here. I'm a picky pup parent, and we've hopped around vets a little bit. Basically, as silly as it sounds, if I get one wrong vibe - I'm out. Dr. Smith is warm, friendly, patient and thorough. She answers all of my questions and concerns, making everything easy to understand and explained. With Thor being deaf, she is very sensitive to him and lets him take his time. I love her. I feel differently about the grooming department; I dropped Thor off here once for grooming and just did not communicate well with the groomer - then she asked me if he had to be on the leash when she brought him out to potty - I almost lost it. He's deaf, of course he needs to be on the leash outside, all the time!!!  I wound up leaving the office with an uneasy feeling about grooming and then turned around on my way home and picked him up without getting any grooming services. haha. I do not suggest getting your dog groomed here. But I do highly recommend Dr. Smith. Read Less

This is in response to Ms. Buntes review. The reason our clinic is requiring the Canine influenza vaccine for all pets that enter our boarding area is because of the recent outbreaks in 40 states including NC and the Ashville area. It only takes one dog to infect the whole facility. It is a highly contagious disease that could have a tremendous impact on the clinic and all the dogs that come in contact with an affected dog. While the vaccine does prevent the strain H3N8, it is not proven to prevent the strain H3N2. Studies have shown that dogs with the H3N8 vaccine do not get as sick as unvaccinated dogs if they are exposed to the flu strain H3N2. As a clinic, we have chosen to take the path of prevention, and are requiring all dogs that will be in our kennel area to be vaccinated with the H3N8 flu vaccine. We would have been more than happy to explain this but the telephone connection was disconnected before the client service specialist had a chance to explain why we are now requiring a flu vaccine. I hesitate to give 1 star but I would really love to. I'm giving 2 stars because the girl who actually checked me out was nice and the Vet tech was nice and handled my cat with care. I'm going to be honest this visit started out on a sour note. My cat had been acting weird and her fur had gotten gross/matted etc. Obviously something was wrong with her and I didn't have a current Vet so I called the closest one to me. They got me in that afternoon which was awesome (another reason for an extra star), however nothing really good came after that. I left work early and went to wrangle my cat into her carrier, ended up at the office early. So I sat to wait. Two of the women who sit at the front desk were disgusting people. Seriously the older women sat up there and talked crap about every single person who called or walked in. I mean hateful vile crap... I was horrified that an establishment would allow such behavior. They are nice as can be to people's face (sort of) but the minute they walk out or hang up it's just cattiness at it's worst. I absolutely almost walked out right then. My appt. was at 4 and they called me back about 415-420 at that point I'd been there for 45 minutes or so listening and watching them be catty. The vet tech comes in and I warn her that my cat doesn't like to be held etc. so she suggests they wait for the Dr. So the Dr comes in and honestly I felt like she didn't know much about cats. She kept looking at me like I was crazy when explaining what was going on with my cat. Basically treated me like I was wasting her time and all she kept saying was wow I wouldn't expect her to be so strong and fast at her age. In process of getting my cat to the vet her tooth came out this obviously, must have been what was wrong with her as she's better now (you'd think the Dr would have mentioned that as a possible source of issue). The Dr. said do we have your permission to do blood work, urine sample etc. I agreed to it as I truly wanted to know what was wrong with her. They said they'd call me back the next day with the results... so I got a call from a different Doctor who said well she has some elevations here and there but nothing definitive and well we can't really tell anything. If you want to bring her back you can but not much we can do or tell. Basically they knew NOTHING, not even a small indication of what could be wrong. Honestly I felt like they wasted my time and my money to tell me absolutely nothing, and to do absolutely nothing. Well I guess the only good thing from this office visit was that my cat lost her tooth and appears to be feeling soo much better, her fur is already starting to brighten up etc. Sorry sooo long but my suggestion to anyone looking for a Vet's office is to avoid this one. I got no sense of security in them caring for my pets, I didn't feel they were knowledgeable and any office or Doctors who would let those two women be the face of their customer service and support obviously have issues. Those women were the most awful people I have met in a long time!! Read Less

He was really suffering as he had gone really bad really fast so decided it was time for him to go to doggie heaven. Of course, I was very upset, as he was our loyal friend for many years. They gave me much needed comfort, did not push me for answers and offered to keep his body for a few days until we could decide what we wanted to do for him as far as burial. I had the terrible experience of visiting Rae Road Animal Hospital today with one of my three dogs. When I first arrived, I had to interact with vet by means of a vet technician. (This was in the form of "the vet says..."I will tell her that you said..", now the vet says..", and so on. Finally I asked to speak to the vet directly. When she came in the exam room, she was dressed inappropriately with cleavage that would be better suited for a night club. She immediately started arguing with me about the conversation that I had with the vet tech (which by the way was completely misquoted). She proceeded to examine my dog while talking to the vet tech about another patient. She talked throughout the entire heart and lung exam. This is where I mention that I am a physician and I know full well that it is impossible to listen to the heart and lungs while having a lively conversation with another preson. She was rough with my dog, who was terrified of her. She did not explain what she was doing or why. She tried to use childish scare tactics to force her medical decisions on me. Overall, she was paternalistic and rough, had very poor conversation skills, and in my view, has very little grasp of veterinary medicine. If a regular checkup went this badly, I am very fearful of the events that might follow if a pet had a serious medical problem. If I could give zero stars I would!! Read Less

Dr. Smith.

Read Less

My dog was having back to back seizures, he was about 15 years old. I called they took gave me quick appt., when I walked in they did not even ask my name, they took us to the back. We waited less than 3 minutes for a vet. They gave me 3 options for him in friendly and professional manner with approximate prices for options and what the options would entail and what results we might could expect. I think these are some of the most compasionate people I have ever dealt with. They knew the pain I was feeling over losing this little friend. Yes, he is ""just a dog"" but he was also a member of our family for many years. Read Less

Read Less

They are ABSOLUTELY wonderful - every staff member CARES about your pet! I can't say enough good about the management of this facility. They work with you and YOUR pet's needs. I never doubt my puppy is in the BEST of hands. I actually walked her back to the ""run"" where she would be boarded. I took the time to visit three times (3) before actually boarding my fur baby and couldn't be happier with the care she received! Read Less

I have been using Rea Road Animal Hospital for a few years now and the staff has always gone above and beyond for my pets. The Doctors are always very informative, explaining all the options in an understandable way and do everything they can to help me make the best desicion possible. They don't treat my animals as a chart number, but like they were their own pets. I am always greeted with a smile, and the receptionists make an effort to remember my face and my dogs' names. I would never change vets and I suggest you use Rea Road as well! Read Less
