I have been taking my beloved mixed breed pup Dita to see Dr. Maples since 2014. When I adopted her in Charleston, SC in 2011, we got a complimentary vet visit and I got so incredibly lucky to find an amazing independent vet right behind my neighborhood in Johns Island, SC. When I moved back to Charlotte, I was worried I would be stuck with a "big box" vet or a larger animal hospital where she might see a different vet each visit.  Finding Dr. Maples and South End Vet was such an amazing blessing!  The entire staff truly treats my dog like she is their own, and they are equally caring and patient with people.  Dita had a lump on her ear last year and my mom and sister took her to get it checked while I was out of town. It turned out to be a mast cell tumor, and my mother was devastated.  When i talked to her and my sister after their visit, she said she was so impressed by Dr. Maples compassion and patience with her when she got upset at the office during the visit, despite her fact that he had never met her before.  My sister agreed and said he was professional, honest, and kind during the whole visit. He told them I could call with any questions or stop by when I was back from my trip, and I took him up on it. He didn't charge any kind of visit or consultation fee for all the follow up he did with me personally after her initial diagnostic visit and was very honest about her options and supportive of my choices.  It was a long road that also included a special veterinary oncologist and surgeon, but sixteen months later, Dita the one-eared wonder dog is kickin' it cancer-free with the help of South End Vet!  We are proud to be extremely satisfied clients and highly recommend them to everyone we know! I decided to take my newly adopted, 10 year old Aussie here after reading positive Yelp reviews about Dr. Maples. I have never met Dr. Maples as a different vet was at the office the day of my appointment. This vet and the technician were very sweet and great with my dog; however, I will never be returning due to my experience with the office manager. I called after my appointment with a follow-up question about provided services and the manager immediately dismissed my concerns and refused to let me speak with the vet or schedule an appointment. Never in my life have I experienced such unprofessional customer service. As a new client, it was extremely discomforting to learn that if I had a legitimate concern to discuss with the vet, I would be prevented from doing so. I called again requesting to speak with the vet to provide feedback on the service I received from the office manager, and was again told no. I was finally contacted by Dr. Maples himself. While I'm sure Dr. Maples provides top quality care, I was baffled by the lengths I had to take to reach him and how I was treated by the front-office staff. I have been to several different vets in the Charlotte area and South End Vet tops them all. I have two dogs (a small 13lb dog and a medium size 45lb dog) and Dr. Maples and staff has been amazing with them both. One of my dogs is very skiddish and erratic and his patience with her has been amazing. The staff is always friendly and they always remember the dogs names and tendencies. I took all of my three pets due to circumstances on the same appointment. Not only they fit my new puppy in, but Dr. Maples spend a good amount of time addressing each pet's concerns. We were very happy with our experience here. They were very thorough, took time to answer all of our questions, and even pretended to be interested in all of the "I am obsessed with my pet and going to share a bunch of fun facts about them that you don't care about."We left feeling informed and that they made recommendations in a non-pushy kind of way. They were honest about our options regarding various tests, vaccines, etc. that are suggested for all cats, but also included their opinions about if they thought our cat specifically needed them all based on it's lifestyle (indoor/outdoor, around other animals, etc.). We have been going to Dr. Maples for over a year now. Great location and have always gone out of their way to see us short notice. You might be able to get cheaper vet services somewhere else but I can assure you this office is worth the extra few dollars. They are batting 1,000 currently on treatments for our Boykin Spaniel. Every time we've had an issue (worms, ear infection, stomach virus) Dr. Maples has effectively treated our dog on the first visit. I really can't speak highly enough of this vet clinic! Read Less

My dog Rufus became a patient of Dr. Maples in February of this year. Before that we had been at Banfield due to our travel schedule and wanting a nation wide network. Now that we don't travel as much it is great to have a vet that you see every time and not a rotation of who is available. The front desk folks are really nice and prompt with any requests that they get. They have convenient hours and a great location. Dr. Maples was really through with his examination and was great with Rufus. He also gave some great tips about trying to keep his teeth clean. I rarely write reviews, but feel as though my past week warrants a review. First of all, we had an appointment on Friday to get our last round of puppy shots at Dilworth Animal Hospital. They called me Friday morning and said they needed to cancel, but couldn't fit us in any other times on Friday or Saturday. I explained to them that we had to get these shots since Chewy had a daycare evaluation on Sunday and I had to go out of town for work the following week. I was SOL, sorry so bad, too sad.I called South End Vet around 10am begging them to fit us in, otherwise I wasn't going to have arrangements for my last minute work trip. The receptionist was so kind and polite. She put me old hold while she consulted with the Doctor regarding our predicament... And Dr. Maples squeezed us in that day!! He picked up Chewy and hugged him before starting his medical evaluation and he was extremely informative and personable. The vet assistant Avery was also awesome on recommendations for this first time dog mom.Fast forward 3 days later... Chewy laid in a pile of ants during lunch and had swollen eyes when I got home from work. I called South End Vet (since they will be Chewy's forever medical provider) and they told us to come in just to be safe. I cannot say enough good things about South End Vet! I recently moved out of the country and need to go through a long and detailed process to get my cat ready. Sien at the front desk was extremely helpful and I could not have done it without her. She was always available for questions and was speedy with her replies. Every staff worker is so friendly and you can tell they LOVE what they do! They really are invested in your pet and treat them as if they were their own. Dr. Maples is very knowledgeable, skilled and personable. I always felt like my cat, Cooper, was in good hands. Long story short, I need to do an adult declaw and was very apprehensive about it. Dr. Maples and I discussed the pros and cons. The surgery was done with a laser and my cat was running and jumping and playing the very next day (despite my efforts to try and get him to take it easy!) and didn't need further pain meds. I came in as an emergency at 8am on Saturday. The staff was nice and very helpful. They didn't preach at me about my baby boy being overweight and they were so informative, I felt totally comfortable. They were there to make things better and keep everyone, including mysel, feel better. Read Less

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Maples and his staff at South End Veterinary Clinic. They squeezed my cat in as a new patient for a last minute appointment after I noticed a severe change in her behavior. Everyone was extremely friendly, and I loved the vibe of the office. It was clear these people have a love for animals, and a passion for taking care of them. Unfortunately, my cat was worse off than I expected and I had to make the difficult decision to end her suffering. Strangely enough this experience is what truly won me over to this team. Dr. Maples explained everything to me, in details that I could understand. He didn't sugar coat things, but was very gentle in explaining my options, and giving his recommendations. My experience with the other staff members was limited, but they were all very kind and sincere in expressing their condolences. I even received a condolence card in the mail with thoughtful, handwritten notes. I think what makes this aspect mean so much is that even though we were new clients, and even though I have no immediate need to give them further business, they treated me and my cats like we were life time clients. If I ever find myself ready for another pet, I cannot imagine taking them any place else for their veterinarian needs. Read Less

I started going to this location when my 2nd pup was just a baby (~ 6 yrs ago). It was once a different veterinary practice so when I learned ownership changed hands a few years back I had a little anxiety and wasn't sure what to expect. That said, it was all for nothing! Dr. Maples and his staff are excellent and they treat my pups like they're family. They're always very welcoming and actually talk to you (not at you) about what your pets needs are and give you suggestions when there are problems and listen to what you have to say. They have by far exceeded my expectations of a veterinary clinic. Even though I moved from Charlotte up to the Huntersville area, I refuse to change my vet for this reason. Dr Maples and his staff are one of a kind.  The office feels like a small town vet and the entire team is really great.  They are very welcoming and Dr Maples has been excellent with helping me understand a variety of issues.  He always takes the time to explain options and discusses the root cause of issues. This hospital is now owned by Dr. Maples and he's an incredible vet! I've used him for all my doggies for years and wouldn't use anyone else. I just switched my 5 dogs from the hospital I've used for years to his hospital, althought it's much further away. He's very knowledgeable, and won't recommend test or medicines your animal doesn't need. Prices are great and much lower than I've been paying. By the way, the office staff couldn't be nicer or more helpful so the ones in the 12/27/11 review must have left :) Three cheers for this hospital. I love it! Read Less

I loved this office when it was Southend Vet Clinic and Dr. Hawkes was there. Now, the clinic is awful, the staff are rude, and they care nothing about my dog. The owner is only concerned about profit and their hours are inconvenient. I was finally able to locate Dr. Hawkes and have followed her to SouthPark Vet (even though I live directly above Mixed Pet!). She is the BEST vet we have ever had (and we have gone to a lot). I called to bring in my new puppy and they were able to fit me in though they were busy. When I arrived, I was greeted with smiles from every one and was given a tour of the hospital. How great is that!? Dr. Merlo was so thorough explaining everything. I was a little nervous since this is my first dog ever, so I had lots of questions. She and the staff seemed so knowledgable and prepared me for what was to come including shots, spaying, and house training. When I left I felt so much more prepared than when I walked in. Dr. Hawkes is the most down-to-earth and laid-back doctor I've ever met- she's wonderful! With a brand-new puppy (and several parasites as well) I was EXTREMELY nervous and overwhelmed and she's coached me through the worst of the worst. Her advice is straight-forward and she and her staff are very easy to relate to. I wouldn't take my dog anywhere else! Dr Hawkes and her staff are great. The care and attention that they provide for my pets is wonderful. They just opened in 2006 but the staff has all been in the veterinary business for many years. The office has the most up to date equipment and even has a laser that Dr. Hawkes does surgery with. I could not be more pleased with this great group of people. Read Less
