Southpark Animal Hospital

This place is more interested in lining their pockets than the health of your pet. Gone here for several years out of convenience and always left annoyed at all the additional "recommended" tests that provide no helpful information and cost hundreds. They also recommended extracting a tooth for nearly $800, second opinion said wait and it will come out on its own, which it did, no problems. Last straw was refusing to authorize petmeds to fill my dog's heartworm prescription, requiring a heartworm test first. They performed this test two years ago and told me it would not be necessary again if she remained continuously on the medicine, which she has. Guess they changed their tune, or maybe that's only the case if you buy the same meds from them at double the price. There's a reason they can afford the extensive renovations they're doing - they'll rip you off. Read Less

Dr Hawkes is AMAZING. She genuinely loves EVERY single animal that walks through her door. She is patient, kind, and REALISTIC! i have been at his vet clinic for years...no one here is pushy or demanding. they will make sure you get worked in for a sick visit same day. also to note... i have an 8 year old daughter who fancies herself a vet in training.. both Dr. Hawkes and Dr. Larson have allowed her to view xrays, use equipment,  and asked her questions as though she had ACTUAL input. i would never expect this from a vet, but really appreciated it.***I do NOT and would NOT believe any negative reviews about SPV, or any of its Drs...the front desk staff is great, and i have never had anyone who was not kind and compassionate at every visit!! I have been a customer here for 12 years. First with my chihuahua and now with my two cats I adopted. I trust them implicitly.I had to recently make the decision ( my first time:() to put my cat to sleep.Dr Hawks conferred with her other counterpart Dr's to save her if we could. The empathy I felt from her when I made the decision to end my babys' pain ( my little cat porcupine) was nothing short of incredible.I hate that Dr. Hawks has to be that empathetic support so many times a DAY for people, but she also sees so much joy too. We used to go here but will never go back. They misdiagnosed my dog multiple times - with the most serious one telling me he had hip issues and to literally "do nothing" about it, even after they did X-rays and my dog was walking on only 3 legs for months.  The worst part was that when I called to get a copy of my X-rays, the doctor scolded me, tried to tell me no, and then hung up on me!! It was the most unprofessional thing I've ever witnessed. I paid $400+ for those X-rays and have a legal right of obtaining them. Turns out he had a torn ACL and was in a ton of pain!! Dr Keri Hawkes is just wonderful. My animals just love her and we have gone to her for over 15 years. She has treated some very life threatening conditions. We have 3 pets over 19 years of age. (2 Persians and a Labtreiver mix). She knows her stuff! Read Less

I can't say enough about the superior care we've always received. SouthPark Animal Hospital has been caring for our dog for 14 years and we wouldn't trust him to anyone else. I can't recommend SouthPark Animal hospital enough! I have been going there for about 4 years now with my two dogs. I am pretty sure I have seen every doctor there and they have all been kind, compassionate and thorough. The staff always asks if my dogs can have a treat before just giving one. I really appreciate that since my one dog has a sensitive stomach and certain types of treats causes diarrhea! Dr. Keri Hawkes is the best! She is a truly gifted vet. Passionate about what she does, and cares for your pet like it's her own. Dr. Hawkes is extremely knowledgeable and will be honest and straight forward with you about the pros/cons of any treatment she recommends. Our dog Chief absolutely loves her and is excited every time we go there! The staff is great as well. Very friendly and accommodating. I would highly recommend Dr Hawkes.  I recently brought my aging cat to the office because she was declining in health pretty quickly.  Dr. Hawkes explained our options carefully and did not pressure us to do extensive ( expensive) testing.  When the bloodwork indicated a serious condition, she again laid  out our options with great compassion.  She stayed with me, and cried with me, when we let our sweet cat go. Unfortunately, I had to put my dog down yesterday which was extremely painful decision for me.  We were shown compassion and genuine care from everyone there at SouthPark Animal Hospital.  I cannot emphasize enough how appreciative I am to have Dr. Hawkes as our vet.  She has a genuine interest in your pet and has always taken the extra time to address any of my concerns.  I am amazed at her ability to empathize too as if it were her own pet.  Yesterday, she reiterated why I chose SouthPark Animal Hospital to care for my animals.  I don't know if she will ever know how grateful I was to be able to say my goodbyes with such care, respect, and grace.  This doctor stands in a league of her own and I am thankful to have found Dr. Hawkes and this practice as a whole. I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Hawkes. She saved my dog's life when he went into respiratory distress when he was a puppy.  She cried along with me when she gave me his prognosis and warned me that he may not survive and I needed to be prepared.  They had a vet tech ride with my Dad and pup and administer oxygen on the way to the emergency vet.  They also called ahead so there were Vets waiting at the door when we arrived at CVS.  The amount of empathy and care they showed to me during a really difficult time was incredible.  After his surgeries, Dr. Hawkes called CVS to consult with Muggsy's surgeon and called me every day to give her opinion on how he was doing.  I know he wouldn't be alive today without her quick care! This was almost 3 years ago and I will never forget it! For Muggsy's yearly check ups (and allergy check ups) I have gone to Dr. Hawkes and also Dr. Estes.  They are both wonderful and take a ton of time to listen to my questions and give me thorough answers.  I highly, highly recommend this vet. We have had such a positive experience with the staff and doctors here.  We have three dogs and one cat and they always welcome us by name.  Our animals receive phenomenal care during their visits as well as when we board them.  Prices are very reasonable and the location is centrally located.  A special thank you to Dr. Larson who saved our dog's life last year.  He was incredibly compassionate, straight forward about the situation and used language we could understand.  It was a very scary time for us and he, along with the staff, couldn't have been more gracious.  As our dog recovered at home, we received daily calls - sometimes twice a day -  from Dr. L or a member of the staff to check in.  Highly recommend! I've taken my dog twice so far and won't be back. While the doctors seem to be competent, their lack of respect for my time is unacceptable. Both times I was in, I sat in the examination room for about 30 minutes past my scheduled time. If they don't respect my time, they don't respect you as a customer/patient. Everyone at South Park Animal Hospital is so patient and kind.  We have a grouchy 1 year old cat and a crazy 1 year old shepherd mix and the staff knows exactly how to handle each of them.  Our dog recently had an infection that required medication and SPAH made an appointment for him to be seen within an hour of my phone call to see if they could fit him in.  They even called a couple days after he started his medication to check on him!  Thankfully he's much better now.  Thanks, SPAH, you're our favorite!  (they're stuck with us now) Read Less

We see Dr. Mercer and I have to say the care he provides for my dog is wonderful. If I call to ask questions, he always calls back and will spend as much time as he needs on the phone with me to answer my questions and explain things to me. He has also randomly called plenty of times to check on my dog if we previously had a bigger issue we were dealing with. He honestly cares about his patients and their families. My dog is very shy/uncomfortable around people but Dr. Mercer's calm demeanor is perfect for her. She always seems comfortable around him and never puts up a fight in the exam room. SPAH has been the vet for my cats and dogs for the last 15 years. The staff loves my animals and swoon over my dog everytime I bring him in. If you request to see the same Dr. you can. An example of how wonderful they are, one time I couldn't bare to bring my 14 year old cat in the office to have him put to sleep. He was dying of Kidney Disease slowly. Because I was such a loyal and long time customer and lived closed by, and I told them I was having a hard time emotionally bringing him in, Dr. Mercer came to my house at my request, with a vet tech and helped him pass while he lie comfortably in his favorite spot next to me. They were wonderful and he talked to me camly and waited patiently for me to finally say I was ready to let him go. Their prices are a little higher than most, but I am paying for the quality care and personal service they provide me and my animals. I highly recommend them. Read Less

I cannot say enough good things about South Park Animal Hospital.  I have been bringing my my two dogs to this office for several years and give every visit an A rating.  From the office staff who is extremely helpful and friendly (who doesn't love Lori?!), confident techs and exceptional care from all of the vets, what is there not to love?I have a 10 year old lab mix and a treeing walker coonhound mix that is 11.  My hound is both deaf and epileptic and has the most sensitive stomach on the planet.  Needless to say, I frequent the vet's office more than I'd like too.  (Thank goodness for VPI.)  As far as pricing, it is comparable to past vets that I have been to in the Charlotte area, i.e. Long Animal Hospital and Commonwealth Animal Hospital.  Let's be real, vet visits aren't cheap no matter where you go.I love, love, love Dr. Keri Hawkes.  I have never had a veterinarian make me feel so informed and comfortable with the decisions that I am making for my beloved pets.  As much as we would like them to, our pets obviously can't tell us when they aren't feeling well.  When a diagnosis is not straightforward, Dr. Hawkes will inform you of all of things that could possibly be causing the problem and will thoroughly explain what course of action she thinks would be best for treatment as well as any other options so you are completely informed.  Her love and compassion is undeniable when she walks into the room with you and your pet.  She obviously greets you but the real greeting goes straight to your animal as she is immediately down at their level, petting them and asking for kisses.  She is a true gem.Cons:  (I'm being picky here.)  A lot of vet offices are located on busy roads for obvious reasons.  It would be awesome if the parking area could be somewhat fenced off so that if for some reason, your dog broke free from your grip, you at least have a chance of getting them before they are immediately in Park Road traffic.  The traffic there makes me nervous every time I get out of the car.  Told ya I was being picky but it's the only con that I can think of.Highly recommend! Dr. Hawkes was born to take care of animals. We found her long ago when to needed a new vet to help our nervous dog Molly. Dr Hawkes figured out how to cut Molly's nails! ( Believe me, this is miraculous) Dr.H. has  also cared for our family's many other dogs over the years. She has a warm personality and great sense of humor.Plus, she has been a wonderful role model for my youngest daughter, who talks often about being a vet, just like Dr. Hawkes!We recently lost  Molly at home, age 15... I stopped in to get meds for the other dogs and saw Dr. H. through  the reception window. She came out to the waiting room, gave me a hug, and started to cry. Wow. We met Dr. Hawkes when the previous vet screamed at me after Molly bit her, peed, and pooped on the awful metal table during a traumatic "manicure". Molly was difficult, for sure. So we are extra thankful for a compassionate and intelligent person like Dr. Keri Hawkes. Read Less

Dr Keri Hawkes is the absolute best! She is wonderful with my dogs and cats alike, (even the grouchy ones) and has saved a couple from life threatening emergencies. We are new to the area and took our cat in to South Park Animal Hospital. The front desk staff is rude and unprofessional. The vet became very rude to me after I told her I didn't want vaccinations that had nothing to do with the reason I was there.  She was rude to me the rest of the time and was rough with my cat.  When I told the front staff that the vet was rude and made me uncomfortable, she just shrugged uncaringly. I will never bring my loved animals to this place again. Read Less

I will not be returning as a client due to an extremely rude female doctor that attempted to reprimand me for questioning the services rendered as well as the amount of the bill. It is our right as a client to ask questions about what we are paying for as well as question the care for our animals, and as a business it is their job to make the clients feel comfortable enough to do so. They did the very opposite and unfortunately most of my prior visits there have been met with rude cold customer service. If they can't provide their human clients with respect and kindness when we are the ones footing the bill it is unnerving to think how they treat the animals when they are in their care. Read Less

We are from out of town with our dog and she contracted some fleas. We didn't think to bring any flea medicine so we called this vet and they prescribed her some meds without even an appointment and costly evaluation. I was in and out in 5 minutes. These people are awesome, very courteous, and very friendly. Minus the fact I didn't directly deal with a doctor, the staff and service was great. Read Less

Need shots for your furry friend? They can schedule an appointment within the week easily. If you can't get in during the week, they offer Saturday office hours, but on a first come first served basis. Great location off of Park Road (intersection of Park and Selwyn). Clean facility. Prompt  and friendly service.I know that they cannot be exact with pricing, but having a list of services and approximate prices would be very helpful. They asked to clip my pup's nails, but didn't tell me it's an additional $15 (spotted it on the Yelp "tip" section afterwards). Having not gone to a vet, I assumed it was part of the overall check up. While they saved me having to give my pup a manicure, I would have liked to have known before getting the bill. When you have a wackjob of a dog, it's a bit challenging to select a vet. Dr. Hawkes is not only a skilled veterinarian, but she is also so wonderful with our wacky pooch. She makes us (and our dog) feel at ease every time we come in - whether it's for standard vaccinations or urgent care. The entire staff works together and it's nice to see that they value each others opinions and expertise. I love my dog to pieces and the staff here makes sure that he's well taken care of and is as comfortable as possible.We've brought our dog in for everything from standard rabies vaccines to an injured leg. The vets here definitely take care of their "patients" with lots of patience!The office itself is sunny and clean and (as mentioned previously) the front desk staff are super nice. Price wise, let's be real, a vet visit is never cheap, but the prices at South Park Animal Hospital are fair if even a bit more affordable than other local vets. I will absolutely continue to bring my pup to Dr. Hawkes and we may even look into their boarding rates! Read Less
