I started taking my dogs to Colony Park initially because of it's proximity to my home (who doesn't like being able to walk your crazy dogs to the vet?) but I have been continually impressed by the care that the entire staff takes with my dogs. They know our dogs by name and you can tell our dogs enjoy going there. When we have had emergencies, I have always been able to get an appointment right away. We use them for boarding and I find their prices to be less than other places in the area. During this past snowstorm, Colony Park staff sent me a video of my dogs playing in the snow and even let us pick the dogs up when the office was technically closed because they knew that we were walking distance to the office. It's that kind of care and concern that makes me feel good about having Colony Park take care of my precious pups. Read Less

We love colony park animal hospital! They took great care of our dog for 10 years. We recently had to put him down and they guided us through the tough decision and followed up after. Have seen Doctors Hughes, Tom, and McKinney for years and they are all wonderful. Especially appreciated doctor Hughes’s encouragemt of non-surgical alternatives before surgery several years ago. I moved away from the area 5 years ago and continued with this team. Thanks for your care throughout the years. Highly recommended! Read Less

My experience here was horrible . There was only one technician there that was very pleasant her name was Ashley. The receptionist/front desk personnel were not animal friendly or welcoming. I felt that Dr. McKinney was very racist, she saw an African American family that had 2 purebred olde English bulldogs that were updated on all of their records and was upset because she couldn’t pinpoint anything wrong with my dogs as to why she couldn’t provide the service I was requesting. And upon raising the table to evaluate my dog, she refused to put the table down ( knowing that my dog was scared and heavy) she made the technician struggle to pick her up and put her down back on the floor. I would not recommend anyone to bring their pet to this animal hospital. Read Less

They are SO great with my dog and are very professional and knowledgable. My family has been going to this hospital for over 23 years and they have always been professional and gentle to all of our animals. They genuinely care about the pets that come into that hospital and it shows through every interaction they have with the pets inside and outside of the waiting room. We have gone to them when we had to put our childhood dog(s) down and they made sure they were comfortable and at peace before passing. I recommend this hospital to anyone who lives in the triangle area! They are wonderful. 10/10 Read Less

I always recommend Colony Park to friends and clients as the entire climate there is friendly, open and professional. And what is really important to me is that I have a very holistic approach to the medical care for my dogs. The vets that I work with at Colony Park respect my views. At times they may present a different perspective, but it is always an open dialogue. That, combined with the excellent medical care my dogs receive there, is the most important ingredient in this relationship. Read Less

We're new to Durham from Chicago - with two big rescues who are a bit flipped out at their move. We tried one vet in town and weren't comfortable - then we came to Colony Park. What a difference! Professional, personable, knowledgeable and funny - and so good with both the ten- and five- year old dogs who can't figure out where they are and what is going on - particularly since they both needed tooth extractions. Procedures fully explained in advance, x-rays provided to show the "why" - and comprehensive "de-briefing" after so we can advance-manage any issues. Plus numerous phone calls to follow-up. Wish I had ten stars - if you are new to town, trust these guys / gals. Read Less

Very professional and courteous. They fit me in (lat minute) on a Saturday when I found out my cat had tapeworms. They also offered lots of advice on how to reintroduce my two cats (who are aggressive toward each other). The facility is very clean and well-maintained. I've met with three different doctors and three different assistants/technicians who were all kind and professional toward my kitties. One of my cats also knocked over a shelf of equipment (whoops) and they were patient and professional then as well. What I think also sets them apart is their online records. I can view when my cats are due for their rabies shots, send messages, or view what kind of services have been done for my cats in the past. It's a very smart way to keep both the veterinarians and the clients on the same page. I can't comment on whether the prices are comparable to surrounding clinics, but my bills seemed reasonable and the front desk ladies went over the bill with me before I paid. Overall, it seems like a fantastic facility. I would recommend anyone new to the area or in need of a regular veterinarian to this clinic.Read Less

My whippets and I have been patients of Colony Park Animal Hospital and Dr. Suzy Hughes since the early 2000s. The care and compassion from Dr. Hughes and staff over the years has been amazing. I choose Colony Park primarily because of Dr. Hughes - many of my whippet friends had recommended her and I have never been disappointed. Just this last week my 10-month-old female was in to be spayed - Suzy's last words to me were "I will take care of your baby." And she did and always has proven that my dogs are in the very best place possible. My wife and I have been using Colony Park for all of our pet needs for going on 20 years now. We would not have it any other way. The Veterinarians there - as well as office staff - feel like family. Our 17 year-old Lab only knew Colony Park - and Richard Hawkins saw her through some rough times. But Joyce McKinney was there at the end, and continues to help care for our younger Lab. However, Susanne Hughes, Alison Klaitman, and Erin Tom have all spent time with our girls at one time or another - and we trust each one of them to provide the proper care care and compassion. The rest of the staff - too numerous to list - are the best. However, I must give a shout out to Rita. I never write reviews, but this place made me mad today. I have been to them once in the past for boarding my dog overnight and they seemed very legit. My friend was busy so at the last minute at 5 pm and called to let them know I would board overnight. When I got there they said she would also need her Decemberparvo shot because she is still a puppy which was reasonable to me. After my 12 hour shift I came to pick and my dog and was found out I also had a $190 bill! Without me even saying anything the girl at the front the first thing she said is she will have the vet speak to me.... I could tell this is a scam they have done before. The vet took me to the back and when she saw my face she said there must have been a misunderstanding bc she thought I wanted my dog to have this "full work up" where she got a rabies, ear medicine for ear infection and some other BS. Long story short even after "taking off unecessary things" my dog bill was $120! They were wrong for their "misunderstanding" and I will NEVER refer anyone or bring my dog back to this place!Read Less

Dr Klaitman is the best!  Kind, compassionate, and great with my dog.  I did not realize how wonderful she truly is until I met Dr McKinney when my dog had a leg injury and Dr Klaitman was out of the office.  Dr McKinney is rude, judgmental,  a know it all, and uncaring in my opinion.  My dog had seen Dr Klaitman for her annual check-up the week before and all was well.  However in the leg injury appointment, Dr McKinney went on to disrespect her colleague  to me and tell me that my dog shouldn't be on her food (that Dr Klaitman said was fine) and that my dog needed to lose 10 lbs (while Dr Klaitman said 5).  So not only is Dr McKinney rude, she's a dog fat shamer!  Also, while examining my dog, she was very awkward in handling her, and my dog was shaking like crazy and very nervous.  Never does this happen with Dr Klaitman!  While my dog was extremely nervous, Dr McKinney did not once reward her with a small treat like Dr Klaitman does.  Dr McKinney went on disrespect Dr Klaitman by telling me all the things that were wrong with Dr Klaitman's recommendations for my dog.  I can't write what I really think about Dr McKinney because it would not be approved by Yelp!  My recommendation to those interested in Colony Park Vets, is to always see Dr Klaitman and never Dr McKinney.  You don't need her sass! If I could give them 0 stars I would...this is a long explanation but bear with me. I just moved to Durham and had to find a new vet that offered boarding for my 3 1/2 year old Pit Bull. Colony Park came highly recommended to me so I thought I would give it a shot. Upon arrival, a young girl who was clearly new was checking me in. She was a little slow, but friendly and I didn't mind waiting to make sure she got everything sorted out. The vet tech that took my dog back was rude. She didn't speak to me and just took my dog without letting me say goodbye. That wasn't that big of a deal, just not the experience I was used to at my previous vet. I let them know upon check-in that my dog has allergies that cause skin issues and that he was just getting over an ear infection. I needed them to refill his ear drops because he is prone to ear infections. They said they would need to examine him in order to refill his prescription, so I agreed to let them examine him in order to get his drops refilled. He also needed a couple of shots in order to be boarded, which I also obviously said were fine. I left and felt pretty good leaving my dog in their care. I had my roommate pick up my dog the day before I returned from vacation. I let them know his name and they said it was no problem. I left my credit card on file so my roommate wouldn't be stuck with the bill, naturally. I received an email from Joyce McKinney, one of the Vets at Colony Park on Thursday night at 10:45 PM explaining that my dog does indeed have a skin infection and an ear infection. (Duh, I told them that upon drop off.) She told me she had some questions but to give her a call on Monday when she would be back in the office. My dog was scheduled to be picked up on Saturday. My roommate called me after picking up the dog on Saturday and let me know the office manager who checked him out was rude. She charged my card, handed over 4 prescriptions, and sent him on his way. No follow-up care instructions, no information on what medication had been given to him that day, nothing. He called me to let me know that he had the dog and he was fine, and I asked how much the total bill was. Not only was I shocked to hear they didn't dispense the ear drops as we discussed at drop-off, they gave him 4 other medications totaling over $160! Nowhere in my Thursday night email was I informed of the charges or treatments that were being given to my dog - she simply stated exactly what I knew. My dog has skin issues and an ear infection. Dr. McKinney took it upon herself to begin treatment without consulting me about cost despite me checking the box on their paperwork saying "I want great treatment for my dog but there is a limit to what I can have done." I responded to Dr. McKinney's email, furious about the vet bill that was now double what I was expecting, and she gave me a call. Not only did she berate me for "letting my dogs skin problems get this serious," she blamed me for not responding to her late night email inquiring about what the charges would be. I had, in fact, called the office first thing Friday morning to ask, but was told Dr. McKinney was not in the office and to call back on Monday - exactly what the email said. I wasn't able to leave a message for her.  Of course I would have accepted treatment - I want my dog to be healthy. But I can't believe how I was spoken to by the Dr. and how they just took it upon themselves to treat him without consulting me. What if I wasn't able to afford all of that treatment? They are rude and crooked and I will NEVER take my dog back to Colony Park. Read Less

I felt I got mediocre care for a very high price at CPAH.I recently moved to the area and needed to get my cat caught up on her vaccines and have another minor issue checked out on her.  While I got all this accomplished, I wasn't particularly impressed with the care she received. I also felt I was presented with some treatment options that may not have been necessary, and was not given the prices up front. When I called to make an appointment I got a "rough estimate" of the price of my visit, and ended up paying $100 more than I was quoted. Of course, my pet is worth the extra $100, but I did feel slightly taken advantage of. Also, the woman that greeted me at the front desk was friendly enough to me, but very rude to the customer in front of me. She thought he had skipped ahead of me in line, but he actually hadn't. Overall, the care was fine but not great, the staff was not overly friendly, and the prices were higher than I have ever paid at a vet in other states. I don't think I'll be returning to Colony Park. I have been a client of Colony Park for 4 years and have been really happy with my dogs' care.  All of the vets that I have seen have been professional, knowledgeable, and very caring.  When I had to say good-bye to my beloved yellow lab, the staff were kind and very sensitive to my sadness.  I couldn't have asked for a more gentle, lovely good-bye.  I always feel as though the vets are very current and up to date with their veterinary knowledge.  The support staff are great and I often leave the clinic feeling as if I have just been with friends. Dr Hawkins is my primary vet (totally awesome), but the rest are wonderful as well.  A great animal hospital! Read Less

Dr. Hughes is the best vet I have worked with.  She is very intuitive about a pet's needs and problems.  I took my overweight, senior cat Gizmo to Colony Park for his annual visit when I moved to Durham.  I had concerns about diabetes which was Dr. Hughes first concern, as well.  Sure enough Gizmo was diabetic.  We went through a long process of trying to stabilize the disease, initially through diet only, and then diet and insulin.  Gizmo was still as feisty as ever on insulin, so it wasn't until Colony Park monitored him over the course of a day that we found out his blood glucose was dropping far too low on the insulin.  Dr. Hughes did not waste any time taking Gizmo off the insulin and recommending going back to diet only to treat the diabetes.  Gizmo has been on a canned food-only diet for almost 2-years now and his diabetes is stabilized (without insulin!!).  He is healthier and more active than he's been in years.  I worked for a pet rescue organization for five years when I lived in SC and we coordinated care with several local vets, all of whom recommended a dry food diet for pets to help their teeth.  Gizmo grew up eating only dry food, so the shift to canned food was not an easy one.  Dr. Hughes explained how the shift for veterinarians to accept that a dry food diet (high carbs, low protein content) may be contributing to diabetes was also not an easy one, and many vets are still resistant to the idea.  Gizmo's improved health and energy has made me a firm believer.  From Gizmo's initial visit to all of the treatment and monitoring to eventual stabilization, Dr. Hughes was unassuming, gracious, and supportive.  I can't recall a time when she ever said "you should" do this or that.  She always laid out the treatment options and let me decide what was best for both me and Gizmo.  Of course, I always took her advice because she was so easy to work with.  Dr. Klaitman performed dental work on Gizmo and I was as equally impressed with her as with Dr. Hughes.  Everyone from reception to the vet techs were more than accommodating.  My only small recommendation would be to create a separate cat waiting room, or take cats back to a room right away to help with stress levels.  There were always lots of dogs in the waiting room.  Don't get me wrong, I love dogs, but my cat doesn't.All in all a small complaint.  This is a 5-star clinic.  I live in CA now, so I no longer see this vet, but if I could move Colony Park out here with me I would! I recently started taking my dog to Colony Park after I moved to the area. My brother-in-law recommended Colony Park and they have been taking good care of his senior Chow mix for some time. The staff at the front desk are always friendly, the doctors I've seen are warm, friendly, and kind. They have a Web portal where you can keep track of your pets medications and vaccinations, and they send you e-mail reminders whenever you're due to come in for a checkup.  Overall I have enjoyed my experiences with Colony Park and I recommend them to people who are looking for a vet. In addition, they offer a free initial exam when you adopt a pet from the Durham Co. Animal Shelter - that makes me love them even more! Read Less

My dog has a record.  She was the runt of her litter, so she has had quite the laundry list of issues over her short six years. Luxating Patellas, Epilepsy, Bladder Stones.. PLUS, Chihuahuas are generally stressed out, so picking a vet that we are both comfortable at is never an easy task.We tried this place out on recommendation from our house's previous homeowners, and since they had good taste on the house, I decided to give them a try.  I came in prepared with a pre-printed patient sheet and all of the medical history I could get my hands on, and the staff was awesome about it.  They ran off copies and made sure I got my originals back, and the techs and vet spent lots of time informing me about what they were doing and why they were doing it.  Since she has epilepsy, she is on drugs on a regular basis - they made sure to get me a list of pharmacies near my home so I could get the right dosage at a reliable place. :)I got a call the NEXT DAY on her test results!  Seriously, that was awesome. Not only because they were good results, but because that's faster than I get a call back for MY test results! :)The only downers - its a little smelly, and a little pricey.  I paid $15 to get my dog's nails trimmed?!  That's almost as much as getting MY nails trimmed (and polished!). I love their location, away from crowds and cars, best for pets that already sense they're ""not in Kansas"" anymore when they go to the vet. My load of critters love this vet...lordy, they've never enjoyed ""vetting"" so much :] Great geriatric care for the oldies, with calm compassion and helping them and me every step. Primo training advice for the new crazed pet, excellent monitoring (poor expereience in the past was eased when they took the time to explain the asst is always checking vitals, digital monitor is connected throughout anesthesia etc), explain their methods, protocol, and standards to the nines, and communicate with cats and dogs as great as they do with people. I like to say the ""room staff"" talk dog/cat, and the receptionists speak ""pet owner."" I've gone to over 10 hospitals in the last 10 years in the Triangle depending on where I'm living, what rescue or personal critter needs what service, emergency, and quality of care. I'm a repeat client at CPAH for the last 5 years. I go monthly with problem or consult and Allison Klaitman, Suzy Hughes, and Richard Hawkins are AMAZING docs, their staff of exceptionally kind and smart ladies causes my crew's tails to wag furiously, and they really have a great touch, judging animal reactions, symptoms, and truly listening to my input as the pet owner, who observes them daily, instead of relying so heavily only on what they see, hear, and feel in the exam room. When a highly technical disease/injury arises, they refer out to specialists, and still follow us closely, calling and emailing consistently throughout the ordeal(s). The efficiency, passion, and intelligence of this team of folks cannot be beat. Please take your pet to them and see, you'll be hooked as I and my cats/dogs are. Be sure to stop and smell the lovely flowers as you enter ;] Read Less

Provided standard care and service while I was there for 3 years. Many different staff there changed, but a few faces stayed I noticed from visit to visit with my dogs. Adding 2 more years to their distemper parvo vaccine made it 3 times costlier. Preferred experienced vets as they'd diagnose without running too many tests... if my dog had an ear infection the first and second time and it was yeast on the slide, the ""veteran"" vet didn't do yet another slide the 3rd time to confirm it, didn't charge exam, and refilled the antifungal ear med. I pay for more diagnostic tests with younger, less experienced staff trying to figure it out. Everyone has always been friendly and outgoing, I will give them that! Read Less

I have been going to CPAH for 12 years with my other two dogs and have had excellent care with those and now this dog. He came to me just two months ago and developed a tumor on his front leg.

From the greeting when you walk in the door, to the gentle care provided by the Vet Techs and Vets themselves, to the checkout experience, we continue to be impressed. We've been clients for the good times, when introducing new critters to our home and the sad times, when the time comes for a loved one to cross the Rainbow Bridge. It's the relationships that we build with all members of the Team, especially Dr. Alison and Rachel, that keep us coming back. She has been there as long as we have been coming and it's simply a joy to always see a familiar face at the front desk!

Read Less
