I've seen many different vets in many states (traveling due to husbands job) this place is GREAT!!!! Not only is the staff very friendly they are very knowledgeable. The vet (Dr. Goldman) is the best. She gave us 2 extra special yrs. with our dogs and has kept our cats healthy. She knows what she's doing when it comes to animals. Staff is far from friendly or competent. Was treated like an idiot for not being an animal expert (didn't know a newly adopted cat had been spayed- yet they opened her up even though she had a HUGE surgical scar on her abdomen), despite them knowing I have never owned a cat before. Don't bring your animals unless you are okay with animals going through senseless pain (seriously, they could have just done an ultrasound!?) and veterinarians who apply zero of their veterinarian education to situations. Used this Vet when I lived in Youngsville.  Moved to just outside Clarsville, Va and HAD been using a Vet in South Boston.  Adopted an Akita/St. Bernard mix and apparently he's too large for the SoBo Vet to handle, or he just doesn't care.  Decided to take my dog BACK to Dr. Goldman and SUPER glad I did.  He can be a handful, but she seemed to work magic on him.  I'll be bringing ALL my dogs back to her.   VERY pleased with the entire office Read Less

Id' say the touch here must be gentle; how else can you express anal glands on a dog whose tail is hanging limply in front of the rectum without noticing how much pain the dog is in with said injured tail? If the vet would have LET ME ASK QUESTIONS and listened instead of trying to sell her overpriced goods and services we could have helped the dog get comfortable. Before leaving I caught her and asked if the tail could be broken, received a flash of a smile and "It happens". Dr. Elyse Goldman saved my dog's life when he was very ill with pancreatitis, involving his liver and kidneys. She was compassionate with me, and helped with my decision to treat him despite my limited budget. The vet tech who was his primary caregiver let me contact her 24/7 while my dog was hospitalized, and in the days after bringing him home. This was invaluable. My dog Charley is a "senior," and Dr. Goldman is managing his arthritis and thyroid issues. She is personable, clear and direct. She clearly cares about my dog. The office staff is competent and professional. I also have boarded my dogs here over the years, at low cost with good care. The facilities have always been clean whenever I've been there. After moving to Franklinton, I needed to find a vet for my dogs and decided to try Tar River Veterinary Hospital.  I have had nothing but excellent service each visit.  They are very caring and take exceptional care of my dogs.  Since my dogs are older, there are been a few instances were I wanted them to be seen quickly and they have always given me fast appointments.  I have nothing but praise for the staff and am glad I found them for my pets. Unfortunately, pet owner's have to sometime make the decision to euthanize a pet that is in pain. Unfortunately, Tar River Veterinary Hospital managed to make that pain worse when I was handed a bill for $105 to euthanize a hamster. Yes, I said a hamster.
