I love our vet, Dr. Sarah at Birkdale Animal Hospital SO MUCH. She spent like 45 minutes with us today to get to the bottom of a VERY scary episode that happened with our kitty Oscar last night. Turns out his pancreas has healed itself and he may not need insulin anymore! He was having a low blood sugar attack!!She sat on the floor with him for the exam, talked to him, petted him, and then talked over all the possibilities with us. She really listened to everything we had to say, and then she asked to see the pics I took of him last night when it happened. From those, she decided to do a blood glucose test, and his level was too low to read!I'm so glad it's something we can fix by feeding him (the piglet) and stopping his medicine. And I'm so glad our animals have caregivers who clearly love them as much as we do!!! Mark and Sarah have been our vets for 8 pets and something like 20 years now. Dr Mark and his team are the best of the best. He and his team helped keep our yellow lab (Cayman) alive a few years longer then most vets would have given Cayman a chance. Years after we lost Cayman Dr Mark and team helped our family dog Bruce with a torn ACL. The surgery and recover was affordable and care and recovery easy with the physical therapy that was laid out for us. I cannot say enough good things about Birkdale Animal Hospital. My cat has had skin issues for her entire life. After taking her to multiple places, including an animal dermatologist, we went and saw Dr. Mark. He did some tests on her and even checked in with me a couple of days later to see how she was doing. It was obvious that he cares a lot. After the results came back, he finally determined what her issue is. He put her on meds and she is now back to normal! We also had another (senior) cat that was urinating all over the house. After MANY discussions, visits, and emails he guided us to the conclusion that was best for all. I have been taking my Golden-doodle and Schnoodle to Birkdale Animal hospital for the last seven years and I cannot say enough great things about this place! All the doctors, technicians and staff are so professional and legitimately care about the safety and well-being of our animals! The care they get there is phenomenal! My doodles have been treated for ear infections, eye issues, anxiety issues and my Golden-doodle even had surgery to remove a mass when she was just a year old. They take time to explain all options and listen to all my concerns. They even call after a few days just to check up and make sure my fur babies are doing ok. My dogs are actually excited when they arrive at the facility due to all the love and affection they get from the whole team. We've been patients of Birkdale Animal Hospital for about 6 years with our 2 dogs and we started going here because it was convenient to our house and they often had appointments readily available. Dr. Etter helped us through the devastating diagnosis that our 9 year old rescue mix had liver cancer and helped us make difficult decisions and even helped us with the financial burden of the bills piling up, by reducing some services, etc. When it came time to say goodbye to our old man Moe who lived another year almost exactly from his diagnosis, Dr. Sarah was incredibly compassionate and professional through the whole experience. No one wants to experience the loss of a pet but when you have to do it, you hope that you have chosen a vet that is courteous and kind and understanding because it's really the only thing that makes the situation bearable. We took our dog Gracie in to Birkdale Animal Hospital yesteday just to get her Distemper immune...but the visit turned into an incredible appointment that helped me understand my dog better. Our dog suffers from great anxiety since we adopted her years ago. Dr. Regina took extra time to address our concerns and put us at ease. Dr. Regina even followed up with email with PDFs on what we spoke about and how better to help Gracie, along with information about medication that would help Gracie's anxiety to ease my mind. My boxer puppy had a very rough start in life and I thought I was going to lose her at one point. She had a weakened immune system and picked up many illnesses. We had previously gone through several vets in the area and she continued to get worse. My friend had recommended me to take my very sick girl to see Dr. Mark at Birkdale Animal Hospital about a year ago. Since the very first visit, I knew this was where we needed to be all along. We've brought our pitt mix here two times now, and I should just say that our fur baby isn't the best around strangers. However, he LOVES coming here (what a weird dog)! The staff welcome him and he ran right up to the ladies up front. The nurse walked in and he was loving on her, and he even did the same to the doctor! If they were mean/rude to him in any way at all, I'm sure I would know about it, because he has such a good judge of character. So the fact that my 60+ lb blue nose loves everyone here makes me believe they treat him well. We are traveling around the country for work and my visit today with Dr. Mark made we wish we'd be in Charlotte longer.  He reviewed (and gathered!) our previous records from various vets and told me my our nearly 11 year old Katrina rescue was in great health. I took my pup here because our current vet was unavailable, and I really needed to take my pup in before the weekend for a minor skin infection. Im so glad I found Birkdale Animal Hospital! We've only been once, but it was a night and day difference from our current vet! The office is adorable and very clean! The front desk staff and vet techs were so sweet, and really made my shy pup feel comfortable! Dr.Regina took her time with us and I never once felt rushed, or that I was asking too many questions! Much like other reviewers, I find too that they do not force their products on you or tack on unnecessary costs. She recommended a fish oil supplement for my dog's dry, itchy skin (a major issue for him right now) and offered their product as a convenience, but said I could also get something comparable at my place of choice which is so appreciated! My wife and I thank our lucky stars often that when we moved to the area without knowing anyone or anything about it, we just happened to pick Birkdale Animal Hospital to provide care for our pets.Our animals have had some serious health issues in the last year and a half, and the care and compassion we get from EVERYONE at Birkdale is absolutely amazing. The doctors there TRULY care about animals and understand pets' places in our lives. We moved here four years ago from New Jersey where veterinary care is all about the money...with Dr. Mark it's all about the animals!  He's kind, compassionate and doesn't try to tack on extra fees and unnecessary services.  When we found a lump on our dog, Zoe's, side, Dr. Mark immediately did the surgery on her even though it wasn't his scheduled day to operate.  He basically saved our Zoe's life since it was a cancerous growth.  We are forever grateful and tell everyone we know how wonderful he is! I love this veterinary clinic.  I bring my precious cat here for toenail clilppings and unlike another clinic in the area (see my other review to find out who) they allow me to go in with my cat while the technician clips her nails. I hold her and reassure her while the tech clips her nails. This is the way a vet clinic should operate.   Don't go to other clinics, where they make you wait in the waiting room while they do it behind closed doors. My Neapolitan mastiff fell seriously ill suddenly just after moving here. I called them first thing in the morning- not being a patient and they took my pup in immediately anyway. Dr. Mark greeted me- I was a sobbing mess, and he was very kind and so good with my sick baby. The staff got my records transferred without bothering me during such a stressful time and Dr. Mark called to keep me updated on exactly what was going on and was able to keep me halfway calm- which is NOT an easy thing to do. I've been taking my cats here for 8+ years and couldn't be more pleased with the care they receive. Dr. Mark is very thorough with his examinations and explains as he goes, which is something I appreciate. If the situation is more advanced, he gives options for treatment and let's me decide based on finances or probable outcomes. The same can be said for Dr. Cathy and Dr. Sarah. The vet techs and front desk staff are top notch, showing compassion and care to my pets (and me). The entire operation is run like a well oiled machine. In the past I've been to other animal hospitals where you seem to sit and wait...and wait...to be seen. That is not the case here. You are greeted immediately and taken to an exam room, where a vet tech will get the ball rolling with all of the prep work before the vet comes in. By the time she's done the vet comes in. They've got it going on!I also like how I can drop my cats off for a "work-in" appointment if they're totally booked. This has worked out fabulously every time. They'll call me when they're ready to be picked up and they discuss the findings. I recommend Birkdale Animal Hospital to everyone I know. BRING YOUR PETS HERE ASAP!!!!!!My husband and I are first time dog owners.  Birkdale Animal Hospital was close to our house so we decided to try it out.  We can't believe how lucky we are that we chose this vet.  The staff is AMAZING.  From the first time I called to make an appointment to meeting the veterinarians- every step has been an absolute joy.  It is very clear that they care a lot about our puppy and even about us.  Although our puppy is embarrassingly hyper, every member of the staff is supportive and tells us how great she is and how wonderful we are doing.  They are the most kind and positive people we have ever come across.  In addition, they do everything in their power to make our lives easier.  They try to help us save money and we can tell that they are being completely transparent.  And they do this completely unprompted which is almost unheard of nowadays.  During our appointments they have offered us several unprompted options as to how we can save money.   We are in awe of their trustworthiness, honesty, kindness and quality of care.  The only negative thing we can say is that they don't offer human medical services because they are so awesome that we would go see them for our ailments as well!! If I could give more stars I would.  Both Sara and Mark are the nicest vets we could ask for.  They do not try to "tack" on extras that you do not need to make a quick buck off of you.  They give you options on how to care for your pet and the whole time they are supportive and knowledgable.  We were use to going to a vet and leave with a guilt trip (we treat our dogs like children).  Our beloved dog, Jack, had a tumor that was crushing his spinal chord and the compassion and care shown to our dog and us was more then we could have ever prayed for.  We had only met these doctors two weeks prior and we felt like our family friend was helping us say goodbye to our pet.  Their staff is very professional and  knowledgable.  When we called all of the staff knew what was going on and could answer our questions - this is rare at a vets office - to find staff that are so in tune with their doctors. I would call and just tell them my last name - they immediately knew I was calling about Jack.  I highly recommend this vet and we will be bringing our Lab and any future furry family members here going forward. What a great vet! I feel completely comfortable bringing my two doxles (dachshund-beagle mixes) here for appointments and for boarding. I feel particularly good about boarding my dogs with their vet instead of another boarding facility on the off chance that they need veterinary attention while we're out of town. My dogs really love coming here and have not shown any apprehension about their vet visits or about going to "camp" (as we call it). They actually seem to love it here and seem to be campaigning for most-popular-dogs status. Before we leave, they always give the staff lots of kisses as a thank you!My only complaints are that you can't pick your pets up from boarding on Sundays because they're not open, and I'm not sure they did the greatest job trimming nails on my dogs' last visit. But they do a great job with grooming (though no bandanas, if you're really into that sort of thing) -- my dogs smelled so good and were so soft when I brought them home!Also, woo hoo! 300th review! Big problems (like your dog may or may not have torn an ACL) or regular vet care this is the first and only place you need to go! I have visited several Charlotte vets, but was referred here because I thought Jacks knee maybe serious. I was heading out of state for the holidays the next day and wanted to know what was going on. A new patient and asking for a same day appointment, this office could not have been more accommodating and sensitive. An honest, friendly and thorough exam by the doc and we were on our way with what we needed, not what he wanted to sell us! (The man got on the floor in dress slacks to examine and pet my shedding lab! HOW AMAZING!) The front desk, vet techs and the doc are amazing! If they treated humans I would be there---but since they don't, my furry buddy will. Mark and Sara!  They have taken excellent care of our labradoodle, JoJo, and I am so glad to have found a vet practice that I trust.  I can tell they really care about dogs just by their demeanors and attention they give to my dog during examinations.  They also have many years of experience and have handled my dog's issues with skill.Drs. Mark and Sara are extremely gentle and have calming dispositions.  For example, they examine my pup on the ground so she's not nervous being on an examining table.  They also give her treats when administering shots to keep her preoccupied.  It's so nice having vets who think of these little things to make our pets comfortable!Their vet techs are top notch as well - they have always been so sweet and gentle with my dog!  I can hear them talking to her when they take her to the back area for a test or bordatella shot, and it always makes me smile.  I highly recommend this practice for your pet's care!
