About a week ago I came in for the first time to have one of my rats euthanized. She was rescued from a horrible situation and in the year that I had her she never quite warmed up to people, and tended to bite HARD on whatever hand came towards her. I stressed the need for her to be handled as little as possible when I made the appointment. They kept that note in the appointment details so both the vet tech Tyler & Dr. Bender were aware of Gwyneth’s temperament ahead of time. I was assured that they could use gas anesthesia before the injection for an added cost to avoid any bites to people & any extra stress for Gwyn, which made me feel much more comfortable. (Of course Dr. Bender decided to palpate her tumors and for once in her life Gwyn didn’t bite, which made me look like a liar, but at least it all worked out.) Tyler, Dr. Bender, and Vicky the receptionist were all extremely sympathetic & understanding of the situation and were clearly working to make the process as easy as possible for me & Gwyn. I hate that my first visit here was a euthanasia at 8:30am but no one made me feel put out for starting their day off with it, and I’m so thankful for all their help & compassion. Read Less

I've taken both my special needs hedgehog and one of my sugar gliders to Avian and Exotic and had amazing experiences both times! Their customer service is truly top notch and I was so impressed with Dr. Emanuele. She was obviously very knowledgable about both species and handled both of my little grumps with visible expertise. I felt very confident during both visits that my pets were receiving the highest standard of care. Also, the vet techs and staff at the desk are so friendly and pleasant that I actually look forward to vet appointments! Read Less

We've been going to Avian and Exotic for 5 years, and have never received such unprofessional treatment till today. First we had an extremely snippety assistant named Ryan, who was incredibly condescending. We were told to return after 45 minutes to pick up our bunny after tooth surgery. When we got back after 45 minutes the doors were locked and there was a sign on the door stating that a staff meeting was in progress from 11:30-1:00. We were supposed to pick our rabbit up around 12:00. They neglected to let us know that they were going to have a meeting. Why would you not tell someone ahead of time that you are going to have a meeting and not to come back until after 1? They were completely unprofessional and the "office manager" did not even seem to care. She simply stated "we did not know you had left" even after the vet told us to feel free to go for lunch or out until our rabbit's surgery was done. There was no apology from anyone in charge. Only one assistant named Kimberly seemed truly apologetic. We had to pay almost 400 dollars for bad service and an attitude. Needless to say, we have found another vet and will not be returning to Avian and Exotic. They have lost a long term customer (of 5 years) due to their poor customer service. Read Less

I have always had great experiences here. I've been coming here since I moved to Cary about six months ago. The vets really seem to care about my two guinea pigs, and they have never been anything but nice, helpful, and knowledgeable. They are a tad expensive, but given the level of care they show, I don't mind that too much. The option to use CreditCare is pretty awesome. But I have to say that my most recent experience was not a great one. I visited family for Thanksgiving and needed to board my guinea pigs for 5 days. I called up the office and was told that the price would be $20 per day for my two piggies ($100 overall), which is about twice the price I would've paid for boarding at the Pet Pad, which is reasonable. The actual bill ended up being a little over $200. I was charged for an initial exam and nail trimming for both pigs, and an extra $8 per day for my second guinea pig. I am more than thankful for the care shown to my piggies, but the pricing is a little outrageous and I would not have taken them here for boarding had I known. Just thought I'd share my experience for those thinking about boarding here. Exceptional service, but too pricey. Read Less

Took two of my birds here today to get their leg bands removed and have some other things done(nail trims, physical exams, and some lab work). This was my first time going here and it absolutely exceeded my expectations. Everyone was super friendly! Got in a little early and filled out the paperwork for being first time patients and we were shown to a room right away and got into the exam. They were really patient and understanding with my young birds, especially my flighty cockatiel. They were also very patient with me, a worried bird mum. Everything went by quickly and efficiently, they answered all of my questions and I didn't feel belittled once. We did have an issue where my cockatiel got nicked whilst having his band removed but it was not the staff's fault whatsoever. They attended to the wound quickly and did not want us to leave whilst the wound continued to bleed which was understandable. While waiting for the bleeding to stop they offered us beverages which I thought was very generous, I've never been to a vet that showed such hospitality. It did take a little while before being able to leave but that's only due to my cockatiel's wound wanting to keep bleeding. I'm really glad they were extremely thorough and cared as much for my animals as I do. I have zero complaints, I would suggest them to anyone who has exotic animals, and I will definitely be taking all of my pets here for the duration of their lives. Read Less

I have been a regular client of Avian and Exotic for over 15 years for the care of several guinea pigs and now my rabbit of 4 years. They are simply the best for exotic pets and I wouldn't go anywhere else. I have read some posts complaining about the cost. Yes, owning a pet is expensive if you want to take proper care of it, which is something that needs to be seriously considered before ever owning one. There is also inexpensive pet insurance for exotics that will cover medical bills for sickness and injury, which for my rabbit, is only $120 per year in premiums. I pay for my rabbit's 2 semi-annual checkups out-of-pocket, and fortunately, have not had to use my pet insurance yet. That will probably change as he gets older, but at least I have some peace of mind that the insurance is in place to help offset any big medical costs. Read Less

On Friday March 17th, my chinchilla was brought here by my brother due to her being very lethargic, not eating, and not going to the bathroom. Usually we go to Bowman's Animal hospital, but the exotic vet wasn't in until Tuesday so they told me to call Avian and exotic animal care. Doctor Emanuele did her exam and told my brother everything is checking out fine besides the tooth disease and an infection in her mouth. They had to use anesthesia to trim her tooth. The doctor told him its very common for chinchillas to have teeth problems and made it seem like a minor issue. They tried to hand feed her while at vet, but they had a hard time getting her to swallow any of it. Nibbles was sent home with antibiotics and pain meds. However, she was in the same condition she was when she was brought there; very sick. The next day Nibbles started to get a lot worse. I called the emergency vet listed on their page due to Avian and exotic animal care being closed to see what they suggested, but they claimed they couldnt give any medical advice over the phone. Nibbles died about 10 minutes later. I feel as though this could have all been prevented if the proper blood work and tests were done instead of assuming it was just an infection in her mouth. There was obviously way more going on. I will definitely never come back here again. She had no right sending her home in that condition. Nibbles may have had a chance and be here today if she received the proper care.Read Less

At the beginning of the year, my beardie Misha developed a small patch of what I suspected to be yellow fungus on his tail. I took him to a different vet who wasted time and money by giving him a liver test because his tongue was yellow (as it was supposed to be) instead of testing for fungus, and wanted to just put him on antibiotics without knowing what it was, which I refused, as it can cause yellow fungus if that wasn't what he already had, so they told me to use SSD ointment on the spot for 2 weeks. After 2 weeks the spot had doubled in size and spread to more of his tail, and the vet wanted to start him on antifungal shots, which sounded like unnecessary pain for a lizard. Instead I took him to Avian & Exotic care, and I could tell they knew what they were doing and cared about my little guy. They put him on an oral antifungal and antibiotic, which I fed to him on leafy greens, in addition to a probiotic supplement. To this day, he is in great shape. Healthy as can be, super active, and no more discolored patches :) Read Less

Around thanksgiving I noticed that my oldest Sulcata had a snotty nose. Through the holidays it got worse, she was coughing and sneezing, sleeping A LOT, and barely eating and not very active. I brought her (along with my other juvenile sulcata) for checkups in February because I read about respiratory infections leading to pneumonia...and death. Dr. Eckermann-Ross and staff were great with my girls! They did indeed both have upper respiratory infections, and we're treated with antibiotic injections. The nurse stayed with me and showed me how and where to do the injection on Smallz, then aided and guided me while I gave Shorti hers. They definitely take care of your pets, and care enough to make sure you can handle giving medications at home. If I couldn't do it, or had trouble, I could bring back them in and they would do it for me! I even received a follow up call from the desk staff a few days after, and Dr Eckermann-Ross herself cheking in around the 3 week mark to see how they were doing and if I needed more antibiotics. I don't like seeing all the posts saying they're expensive...this is an exotic pet clinic only. Of course you'll pay a little more because they're specialists. Who else could I take my African Tortoise to and have the specialty care they need? Plus they do boarding! Boarding for exotic pets! That's awesome. I'm lucky that my wife has a good friend with 3 boys that take care of our pets while were gone. But I wouldn't hesitate to let them keep my girls for us. Who better than a veterinarian to leave them with! Overall, a first visit for 2 juvenile Sulcatas, fecal test, bacterial test, and antibiotics for both for 3 weeks, out the door cost was $350ish. I don't think that was bad at all. And my girls are doing so well and I love seeing how playful they are now that spring has come! Read Less

Read Less
