I relocated here with my 2 dogs less than a year ago. One was healthy and had never had any issues. The other was very ill and had been getting excellent care from his previous specialist. The care he had been getting previously was allowing him to have a good quality of life and he seemed to be doing better since his treatments had begun. When I got here, I needed to refill his medications so I found VSH (specialists qualified for his type of care). I read the reviews but was skeptical since I know how expensive veterinary care can be. On the initial visit, all records had been sent including x-ray's, CT scans, ultrasounds, biopsies, bloodwork, medication list, etc. All had been completed within 2-3 months of arriving at VSH. The vet looked at the large tumor on the top of his head and had just stated she had reviewed his records, but said she wasn't convinced of his diagnosis. She wanted to redo all of the testing and quoted me around $10k-$12k "with no guarantees of prolonging his life expectancy" and refused to provide him with his medications until she was able to perform the testing again there at their facility. Unnecessary! I spoke with his vet back home and we came to the same conclusion.... I'm sure you can understand at this point what that was...
His health deteriorated so quickly within the next month that I had no other option but to not let him suffer any longer.
Then, my other dog had a dry hacking cough for 24-48 hours and I couldn't get him in anywhere else for a few more days so I took him there. I had a different vet this time. At first she told me what she believed to be his issue and stated thousands of dollars in dx testing. At this point I was already skeptical and on edge over the one I just had to let pass and the ungodly amount of money they'd already quoted me for now both of my dogs (upwards of $15k-$25k). I started pushing back. This time, this vet was honestly very helpful and worked with me to get him the right treatments, medications, and plans for future evaluations. She was wonderful!
My dog has been doing very well with her. However, one medication is very expensive and even MORE expensive with their "dispensing fee". I was able to get 100ct of his medication for $202 CHEAPER than the 90ct because of this "FEE". Now, this isn't his vet, but the office! So, his 90ct medication was $360, but 100ct of the same medication was $158. When I tried to refill his medication recently, the office manager stated that she would do me "a favor" and allow a weeks worth to be filled (true, he had not been seen there in a month-month and a half but his vet did say that she would work with me on this due to financial strains but he would need bloodwork to check his liver and kidney function with the meds. And he did have an upcoming appointment, but I digress). Again, the cost for the initial meds were $1.58 per pill ($158 for 100ct), the cost for 15 pills (my "favor" - as was repeated numerous times) was $60 - $4 per pill!!! Some favor, huh?
I wanted to believe that this place wasn't just about the money, but the more I find out, the more I have learned... It isn't ALL of the vets or staff. Some of them are wonderful. But when you overhear a member of the staff say, "Well I understand her concerns but she needs to realize that this isn't just a veterinary clinic but an actual business" to another member of the staff about another pets caregiver (or even possibly about me... Who knows) when they thought no one was around to hear... on top of my own and others experiences... It's kind of hard to dispute that there are some definite issues going on with how things are being ran here. I will not be back at this office, but if the last vet I saw there went to another clinic, I would be happy to follow her wherever she goes.
