Although our situation was probably (hopefully) not the norm for most, I have to say that this group handled a very tough decision to put down our dog in a very professional and caring manner.  They were also very caring during the times when she needed medical attention. For those who don't really want all the details in the long post below, the bottom line is this group does a good job scheduling, communicating and making you feel like they care about their patients. And they do an even better job in those areas with the end of life process. For the one review I read regarding the high cost, I would tend to agree that costs for caring for your pet without insurance can give you sticker shock, but that same sticker shock would happen if there's no personal insurance coverage for yourself as well.  I can't speak to any price/care comparison to other vets in the area, but they are certainly cheaper than the NC State Vet ER group! Our 10 year old Maltese had some health issues that had to be addressed with both medicine and ongoing checkups. It started with a costly diagnosis from the NC State Vet ER and moved to Care First once the medicines were prescribed. All the staff were friendly and seemed to love their furry patients.  The front desk staff were always smiling and so friendly.  The wait times were usually very small and the vets were always attentive and listened to your description of symptoms.  On her last day of life here, our Maltese had a hard time getting her breathing down to normal and panted excessively.  At one point, she suddenly stopped breathing for a short moment and then returned to a listless state.  After getting in the car and rushing back to Care First, we called to let them know we were on the way and that she was in and out relative to her breathing.  They had someone meet us at the door and rushed her into the back to resuscitate and stabilize her.  The vet came back to tell us the bad news that with all the issues she had been having, her quality of life would not be the same since those issues are what led to the day's event.  They gave us time to consider our options while keeping her stabilized with oxygen.  The moment we made the decision to put her down, they led us back to where she was on the table with an attendant holding the oxygen tube near her mouth since she couldn't be intubated.  They patiently waited for us to give the go ahead and it went pretty quick.  Even after it was done, they allowed us to stay there holding her and led us to a waiting room to be with her for awhile.  Even beyond that day, they called to offer condolences and even had flowers delivered.I know it's very hard to pay out large amounts of money for your pet when they are in need of medical attention, but if you ever have to experience the above, I feel Care First would be a very good choice to provide the care and support for your pet.Highly recommended. May I first say the the staff and the doctor that I saw were very friendly and went out of their way to make me and my cat feel safe and comfortable. I just don't understand why a supposedly lover of animals would place more importance on money than caring. My cat wasn't eating and seemed out of it and since he is 17 years old, I took him in. They told me a blood panel would cost between $200-400 and I almost needed to go to the ER after that little bomb dropped. They were very matter-of-fact and didn't blink when I told them that all I lived off of was an SSI check monthly. I don't get how they do not have some kind of a consideration for folks that are in crisis and don't have the entire amounts of cash to pay for such a large amount. I left and paid one hundred and something for the physical and a hydration injection. I called another place that I had gone to in the past and they said they would charge $180.00 for an exam and blood work which I thought was far more reasonable. Read Less

This review is about the heart of this place. I can't speak to their vet services but I want to tell you about how amazing their team is. I found this dog in my parking lot today. My husband and I are 1) moving to another state 2) leaving for an international trip 3) selling our house -- all happening this week. So, I call Care First and tell them the situation. The angel, her earthly name is Kate, says "Of course we can scan him. Come on in hunny." I go in with this dog and immediately start sobbing because see sentence 4 (I'm exhausted and emotional), and now I have this dog that I can't abandon, so I'm sobbing. They swoop me into a room, make sure I'm breathing, and get to work on trying to find the dogs owner. They do find the owner, I attempt to reunite the sweet boy with said owner, and it appears she's abandoned her senior pup. When I left with the information, she told me if I needed anything to call. So I did because under the circumstances we couldn't keep the pup. They took him in and unfortunately had to call animal control per protocol. With all of this said, the way they treated a sobbing mess, non-paying customer was outstanding. I don't know how else to extend my gratitude than to say if you or your pet needs an angel, Care First has one -- two actually. How the front desk treats you says so much about an establishment and this place has some of the best.tl;dr: they have an attentive and caring team that will do their very best for you and your pet. The staff members greet us by name and are always so friendly and professional. When we travel and are unable to take Pepi with us, we board him here as well (once as long as 8 days) and never have had an issue. The facilities are always clean and grounds are always well kept. Mugs has been going to Care First on Oberlin since she was 8 weeks old. She goes for the vet, school, camp, boarding, and grooming. Everyone there knows her and she is always so excited when she realizes where she is going! It is so comforting knowing that she is in good hands when she is there. The trainers, Devon, Alexandria, and Brandon are so talented and she loves to work with them. She has even tried her hand at painting! April always does a great job making her look beautiful (especially with the bows on her ears!). Rebecca and Mary made sure that she had a great birthday. this review is for their boarding services only: their kennel staff is dangerously incompetent. I boarded my pet there, and they need to take medication with each meal, or they show very specific symptoms. I wrote clear directions on both the bottle of medicine and case of food. Two days into boarding I get a call that my pet is showing those exact symptoms and they want to do an exam. I could never recommend anyone take their pets to a place that shows such a lack of care for animals. Take your family anywhere else if you want to trust that someone is actually caring for them. EDIT 12/28/17 The animal hospital contacted me and have said they have changed their process for new comers because of my review. They also offered to help me retroactively get me on a plan so I'm not paying for the $600+ all at once. Unfortunately, because I used a credit plan they can't help all that much. I did not use care credit for my follow up visit that they charged me for though. I wish I could get a refund for a standard follow up, but aside from that they attempted to help me out but it didn't work out. The person I was in contact with was extremely helpful. However, the people I first met with on my visit were not. Therefore, I cannot change my rating. I just want people to know that they did reach out and try to amend the situation but there were a lot of hoops I would have to jump through in order to get 'semi-refunded'. 10/2017 This place is extremely overpriced. I thought my dog's spay would be within a reasonable cost, but it was $600 out of pocket and when I asked about pricing plans they blinked at me as if I had $600 laying around. I am currently paying of loads in student loans and I just moved so my finances are a little tight but I wish they had gone over costs with me before just asking for $600 like they were borrowing a dollar. I came back for a post-surgery check up a week later because of lumps on her belly and I wanted to make sure my dog didn't mess with her sutures and they: 1. Charged me for a post surgery check up. 2. Whisked her off to make sure she didn't have worms in her diarrhea when there was an obvious 90% chance it was from post-surgery side effects (that's more $) 3. Her cone had cracked so reasonably I thought they would replace it with no extra charge since I had just paid the hospital $600+ OUT OF POCKET but NO, they charged me. They never said, "Well, we'll have to charge her for the cone on top of her surgery and 1 week check up." They waited until I got to the counter. So I have paid this place $800 in the one week I have known them for one surgery and one check up. The amount I have ever paid from personal hospital visits in the last 10 years COMBINED is only ONE FOURTH of what this animal hospital has charged me. And I just moved and my past vet was no where NEAR these outrageous costs. As a newcomer, I wish they had sat me down first but really they CARE FIRST about the money. I even see the greed in their eyes. My last vet was so warm with me and genuinely cared about me and my pet and introduced me to their pet plans. I ask about their pet plans and it's like, "Huh? You aren't super rich?" I wish city corporations had the same genuine Southern hospitality as my previous veterinarian. Read Less

Care First is unmatched in caring for their patients and families. Towards the end of our 14 year old dogs life, Dr. Mendise called me twice to discuss his quality of life and assured me of their care for our personal decision. On that very difficult day, Olivia and Dr. Wages handled our family and our ole pup with the utmost respect and love. The staff set up a room for us prior to arrival, so that we didn't have to "check in" amid the busy waiting room, brought numerous bo...xes of tissues to us, and gave us as much time as we needed to say our goodbyes. We left with a complimentary paw print of our precious dog which helped ease the grief of leaving alone. After a long day of grieving, they sent us a beautiful bouquet of flowers to our home expressing their condolence. We were overwhelmed! Care First is an amazing veterinary practice.  Everyone there is so nice, caring, and knowledgeable.  My dog, Bunny, loves to go there for vet visits, day care, and grooming.  She starts wagging the moment we get out of the car!  (And most dogs are not happy to go to the vet - but Care First is different...and so much better.). Bunny has had several illnesses and every time I call, they see us immediately.  I have seen all of the vets at various points and they are all excellent.  They don't just come in and examine your pet and leave.  They take the time to answer all of my questions, they are always petting Bunny and acting so sweet with her, and they also follow up with phone calls when she is sick, to see if she is getting better.  I have had several previous pets at a different vet practice and there is no comparison.  Care First is absolutely first in my book! We travel for our work, and live all over the country, but I always use this location as home base, require that all other vets in other states include them in care strategy when we are away from home, and always come back here for status updates and check ups. You simply cannot go wrong with these wonderful people. Believe me, I've had to use Veterinarians in 5 other states over the years, and I trust no one as I do this group of dedicated and bright individuals. I wish I could post a picture of my little guy because at 18, he looks and acts like a young pup. That can be directly attributed to the care of this teamRead Less

Wonderful experience. Dr.West and the PT staff helped us avoid ACL surgery for our lab mix Gypsy. Her physical therapy program strengthened her muscles and with their help we were able to finally get Gypsy to lose some weight, also helpful in preventing surgery. Dr. West was very patient getting Gypsy to enjoy her water therapy sessions. The staff at the front desks was always helpful and patient - getting us weighed in and making sure our appointments were on the books. This is an update on our experience with the physical therapy program offered at Care First and Dr. West. With that said, Dr. G is our "primary care" vet for all our pets. It's been 2 months since our dog's last PT session and she continues to do well. I thought I would need to continue the therapy periodically, and may need to in the future, but so far not yet. I have a happy, "twirly", playful, full-of energy, 10-year old pomeranian who 5/6 months ago came up lame. This dog was a breeding female at a puppy mill with a permanently dislocated patella and something happened to her "good" back leg. With the patella issue alone she along walked on 3 legs and the thought of her ever walking and bearing weight on all four legs was unthinkable even after consulting an orthopedic specialist. She continues to walk and bear weight on all four legs, twirls, runs, barks and now plays with and runs with other dogs so much so I'm comfortable leaving her in an open-play, doggie day care facility if needed. I've continued the Phycox small bites twice a day and she does have pain medication she takes at night "just in case" she has any discomfort that we can't detect, but you would never guess that she has any leg, hip, or patella issues. Last but not least, Dr. West is also just incredible with these animals. My dog adores her and more importantly trusts her. Well worth the time and expense and I would highly recommend this course of treatment to anyone who has a pet needing physical therapy due to an injury or a pet needing treatment for pain management and/or better mobility. Amazing each and every time! They have a wonderful group here. We have three dogs and have come to CareFirst multiple times for various reasons and they've been able to gracefully and successfully help us with all of our concerns. Among many of our experiences there, our most recent stands out the most. Our girl tore her ACL right before we got married, so after meeting with Dr. G he recommended trying physical therapy before we resorted to surgery. We met Dr. West and she explained how therapy worked and what we could expect. After speaking with her, we decided to board our girl while we were on our honeymoon to rest and start therapy--what an awesome experience. We've never boarded our dogs in the past so we were nervous nancies and did call to check on her a couple of times. The wonderful front desk person connected with Dr. West who took time out of her busy day to talk with me about how our girl was doing in regard to being boarded and therapy. Above and beyond in my opinion! Dr.West, the PT group and the rest of the CareFirst group are all beyond friendly, talented, passionate, patient and thorough. They provide detailed write ups and always take the time to answer any questions you may have. We highly recommend them! Read Less

I can't express enough how thankful I am to have CareFirst as my pets' veterinary office! For starters, when I first adopted my dog, Alex, he was a bit rambunctious and needed a lot of training. I enrolled in the weekly group class training on Wednesday nights, and would drop him off for supplementary training as part of their Day School program for additional work. I also utilized the Day Camp services quite a bit to help him expel some of that excess puppy energy. He always came home tired and happy, which was a huge relief to me with a busy working schedule! And the best part, when I would drop him off for school or camp, I could also schedule his routine shots and they would administer them as part of his day before I picked him up. I get my cat's shots done here, as well, and the vets and techs are also so gentle and friendly with both my pets. Whenever one is sick, all I have to do is call and they provide me with at-home care advice before having to take them in for a visit. They're diligent about following up after a pet has been sick, or just to check in in general to make sure all is going well after a visit. To have a veterinarian that is reliable and caring like that just means the world as a pet owner. CareFirst is a great all-in-one veterinary office that I would, and do, recommend to anyone! My pets love Dr. Riego and all of the staff. And Jody might be the friendlist front-of-house person I've ever encountered at a vet's office. It's always a pleasure to visit! Read Less

This is a shout-out to Dr. West who handles the physical therapy services at the Glenwood location.  I have a rescue pomeranian who came to me with a permanently injured right leg/hip due to a luxating patella - though it could have been repaired as a puppy her "owner", who ran a puppy mill, neglected to do and so the issue became permanent.  When she was given to me to foster she was not walking at all and my vet at the time in Florida put her in physical therapy for 6 weeks and we saw improvement with her "good leg" but no improvement with her right leg.  She has never been a dog that will go for a walk but she was able to always get around.  After adoption and a later a relocation to NC in 2013 she came up lame one day a few months ago and was unable to walk at all.  She was put on bed rest and pain meds 3 times a day for two weeks but still was not able to walk well and her xrays now showed extreme arthritis in her good hip.  Dr. G gave me two choices - a buggy or try PT again with Dr. West.  She had done well with her first PT experiences years ago so I decided to give the PT a try once again.  It's been 3 months and I could not be more pleased with her progress.  We started with 3 weeks of intense PT - twice a week - and now are in once a week or once every 10- 14 days.  Dr. West is highly knowledgeable and is GREAT with the animals on a one-on-one basis.  My dog adores and trusts her and there is no fear when I drop her off.  She is now walking on all FOUR legs - not the prettiest walk - but walking, "twirling", running very short distances, etc.  Although she is still on a pain medication  I've decreased her dosage to once a day along with Phycox small bites supplement which manages any pain/inflammation she may have that she's not indicating to either of us.I highly recommend their PT services to anyone.  Well-worth it! I love the holistic approach and the results have been amazing. Dr. West cares so much for the animals and her passion for what she does compares to no other I have seen. When paisley walks in to be treated she is completely at ease with Dr West and the treatment is so effective you can see immediate relief. I never thought I would see my dog walk into a vet hospital and lay down and take a nap because she is so relaxed. A review of CareFirst's puppy class - It so much fun and we learned a lot! Jasey Day was our instructor and she was great! Our puppy's confidence grew and she handled the things he was uncertain about (such as being touched by strangers) with care. I like the way the class is set up - that you buy six classes but have eight weeks to finish them so it's no big deal to miss one. The only thing I didn't like was that this way of doing it can make for some big classes and each individual doesn't get as much attention as they might need. Jasey ended up splitting our class in two, which was much better! Our dog will be going back for the next level soon. Read Less

It has taken me several months to write this review as the devastation one goes through upon the death of a pet has been difficult. Simply put, my one and a half year old yorkshire terrier died after months of vet visits with CareFirst that begin in February where the vet informed me during every visit that she was, and I quote, "perfectly healthy". They have very nice front desk people but frankly, I don't need nice people; I want intelligence, care, and competence in my vet and someone who will do everything in their power to save my dog's life. I very incorrectly assumed that CareFirst would possess the "caring" quality that their name inappropriately suggested. We took my dog to CareFirst multiple times between Feb to July because we noticed diarrhea and a decrease in activity and every checkup revealed nothing. Every single visit ended with the vet telling us she was "perfectly healthy". The diarrhea continued day after day and every checkup produced no results. We gave her dewormer once and then antibiotics. Nothing worked. We went on vacation for a week and left my dog in the caring hands of my mother. That Friday, my mom could tell she was very sick so she took her to CareFirst. They told her that she was dying and that she would need to pay several THOUSANDS of dollars for an overnight stay. Upon the vet's consultation with my mom, she was extremely rude to her and even referenced a medicine for my dog that she had said was a dewormer but was actually a completely different medicine alltogether! My mother caught her in the mess-up wherein she became even angrier and unprofessional. Her name is Dr. Lisa. My mother left and chose to drive the 5 hours to TN to visit her longtime vet there. I will be writing a review of Kingsport Veterinary Hospital's wonderful, intelligent, kind, and competent veterinarians very soon as I appreciate everything they did during that time. Not just one but three different vets saw my dog in Kingsport and immediately put her on IV. Not once did they give up on her, holding out hope that they would be able to heal her. She got a little better. She had auto-immune disease, enlarged liver, low blood count, the list goes on. On July 3, during my ride to TN to visit her, 4 hours in and 1 hour away, I get a call that she had a seizure and would not make it. She passed away and I wasn't able to see her. She would still be with me today if we had caught the illness sooner and CareFirst did their job correctly. She was my first dog and I miss my beloved pup dearly. I am very disappointed that I did not seek an alternate opinion after multiple visits with this terrible establishment that seeks to reassure the owner rather than inform and treat our animals' illness. Please do not make the same mistake I did; stay away from this vet hospital and seek the many other options of animalcare elsewhere. I will never return to CareFirst nor go to any of the chain locations in NC for fear of experiencing the same staggering incompetence of this Glenwood CareFirst Vet Hospital. Read Less

They both were bubbly and so wonderfully nice to me AND my dog -- even taking a couple minutes to play and pet my dog (who was already SO nervous about getting his shots).Dr. Ford smashed a peanut butter treat on the table for my Corgi to be distracted with/lick, while she gave him his shot -- he didn't EVEN notice! It was so wonderful. I've also been taking the Puppy K training class with Jasey Day (one of the trainers) -- which is a 6-week class bundle with 1-hour classes every Thursday for $120. My little puppy went from hiding in the corner/under seats, to cavorting around the room with a female Schnauzer during off-leash puppy play-time. This animal hospital ROCKS! Read Less

I recently got a cat I have never had a cat before (or any pet on my own) and was a bit unsure where to go. I choose Carefirst because of the location but I am so glad I did! Short of it, nice vet techs, vets explain everything, they do follow-up calls! But here is my experience...The vet techs greeted us with a smile, they did some cat talk to Charlie (my cat) and when he was weighed outside of the check-up room, mentioned how he was literally the cats meow...she mentioned how everyone wanted to pet him and mentioned how handsome he was...he really is! Then the vet came in and said "this is the famous handsome cat everyone wanted to meet".  This made feel like they treated him like their own!Charlie got shots and we scheduled his neuter appt. and the next day they called to make sure the shots didn't affect him. I really liked this! Went back for the neuter, they called when he was out of surgery and when I picked him up, they told me how he was a great patient. They told me how to care for him and when they made a follow-up call, gave me pointers on the litter problem. Really impressed with them but then again, I've never owned an animal! Read Less

I just started working with CareFirst because we're fostering a golden retriever (through the Neuse River Golden Rescue). The amount of genuine care that pours into the work they do is so refreshing. They're so thorough with their approach to solving problems. I was pretty stressed out about the health status of this poor golden that I would be fostering. But, I was immediately put to ease when the doctors and staff quickly tended to her to make sure all would be well. Another very important quality of CareFirst is how thorough and CLEAR they communicate.

We are so grateful for the wonderful team of staff, doctors and groomers ( Barbara) over the years and will return if our family embarks on a new future, furry friend! THANK YOU!!!! Our toy Pomeranian is 18 years old, and has been a patient with Care First Glenwood since his birth. They've gotten us through puppy, juvenile, adult, and now senior issues with our fur baby. They have done this with patience, professionalism, and great care for this ever so important member of our family. I do ask specifically for Dr Ghneim, not because the other Veterinarians aren't as qualified, but because he knows our history and he always takes the time to explain to us exactly what is going on and has been a such a huge source of support as we have traversed some serious condition treatments and care.

Read Less

I took my dog in last week because he was throwing up. I can understand doing a X-ray and a blood test to make sure there is no blockage or poison. After many other test on things I had never heard of before they found nothing, all test were negative.  The conclusion was he ate something that did not agree with him.  Really, I paid over $1000 dollars for an upset stomach. I feel the group there was adding on additional charges without seeing if time take care of the issue. Read Less

I too have had a bad experience with Carefirst animal hospital on Glenwood. The vets come in and out and don't even explain what they are doing. They look quickly at the eyes and ears sometimes, not even every time, then go to the back and let the helper come in and examine the dog, then come back and say my helper said that everything looks good. When you try to ask questions, they are in a rush to get to the next patient and make you feel uncomfortable.  Waste of money to pay for vet visits when they are having their helpers examine the dogs and answer my questions.  I didn't pay for a helper to answer my questions I paid for a supposedly caring and intelligent veterinary doctor to answer my questions. Read Less

The vets, assistants, AND dog trainers here are all wonderful! I've had appointments for my little puppy with both Dr. Ford and Dr. Ghneim.

Read Less

Loved CareFirst at Glenwood, sad we moved too far away to keep going there. Everybody was always super friendly and took great care of our Bernese Mountain Dog, Jackson. He was unfortunate enough to require a couple of treatments for different accidents and every time we felt he was very well taken care of. I can only recommend this place. Every doctor was great to work with. Thank you!

You don't feel confused or anything when you leave the office... which is nice when you have a lot of meds to administer a dog!CareFirst gets an  A++ in my book on every level of business! Read Less
