They admitted to not always supervising dogs in their doggie day care. As a result, a dog in their care escaped. They responded with blaming the owner for bringing him in and blaming the dog for being aggressive. Even if that was the case, which it wasn't, they still allowed an "aggressive" dog in their care and left him unsupervised. I would never trust them with my dog due to unsafe and negligent practices. I would like to share my experiences with MMAH, Dr. Covington, and her staff.  there are 2 very important times that stand out to me. The first was few years back when my 12 year old shih tzu was attacked by a much larger dog which resulted in a serious injury to her hip and leg.  The veterinarian we were seeing at the time provided us with 2 options; first to replace her hip and follow up with physical therapy for a year, the second to put her down as she was in significant pain.  As neither option was easy to pursue, he provided us with pain medication and we took her home to think about the best course for her.  I decided to get an another opinion to see if there were perhaps a better way to go.  I took her to MMAH and Dr. Covington as well as her staff were very compassionate and understanding.  Dr. Covington provided a third option; to remove her leg.  We scheduled the surgery and she had her leg amputated.  While this sounds drastic, Sadie did very well and recovered nicely without any issues.  as a result we had many more years with Sadie.  Sadie was 16 when she passed away. Now fast forward to this summer.  My very beloved 10 year old Dachshund, Lucy,  became acutely ill, extremely bloated, and could barely walk.  We rushed her to the emergency vet where she had excellent care. They did x-rays which were suggestive of pancreatitis. While we were there, the bloating decreased and we asked if it were safe to bring her home and to her regular vet in the morning. They agreed that would be fine.  Lucy's vet saw her in the morning by which time the bloating was completely resolved but she was still struggling to walk.  He said the bloating was most likely a result of extreme gas but she had a torn ACL.  She was placed on steroids and we were to limit her activity.  While on steroids she was drinking excessively and having frequent 'accidents' in the house (she never did that).  following the steroid treatment her knee appears to have healed but the pain still remained.  She again went to her vet for examination.  At that visit, she was diagnosed with diabetes and insulin was started.  She was to get 3 unit of insulin injected once a day. Her glucose was over 400. We were leaving in the next week for an already purchased trip and I was very concerned leaving her.  My daughter agreed to care for her while we were away and to give her her insulin injections.  During the time we were going to be away she needed a glucose check. My daughter took her to MMAH to have it checked. it glucose was till over 500.  Dr. Covington kept her for the day and did serial glucose checks while adjusting her insulin.  Se is now on 5 units twice a day.  After we returned home and after several days on this dosage, Lucy still was in pain and had gone 24 hours without urinating. I feared the worst and I took her back to MMAH expecting that I may have to leave without my baby.  When we arrived at MMAH they rushed her to the back to check her status. It turns out that she did have pancreatitis and would be fine after treatment and a special diet.  Today, Lucy is doing well and I am very grateful to MMAH and Dr. Covington!!! Read Less

I took my dogs here to be groomed. The groomer "mixed up" some unknown chemicals with the grooming products. Both my dogs ended up with chemical burns covering their bodies. I brought the first one in and Dr. Covington misdiagnosed him and insisted it had nothing to do with the grooming. I then got home and realized my other dog had the same thing and they were getting sicker. I rushed them both to the emergency vet who said they had chemical burns. It took weeks of fighting with Dr. Covington and staff. They wanted an "independent" dermatologist consultant to see if they were at fault. They chose him. He said it was their fault. They still fought back and only paid a portion of the thousands of medical bills. One of my dogs had all the pads rip off his feet, most likely due to becoming soft from internal chemical burns. They refused to pay for it. DO NOT GO HERE. If you care about your animals, go somewhere safe. Read Less

I've been taking my dog to see Dr. Covington for over 7 years. I moved away from a neighborhood nearby and tried another vet hospital for about a year because it was closer. However, I returned to Mitchell Mill Animal Hospital because the personal service was superior. The staff at MMAH is always kind and welcoming. Dr. Covington doesn't recommend superfluous tests and medicines. She is understanding of real life financial constraints and offers suggestions for affordable alternatives when possible. For instance, my dog had an anal gland abscess while I was with the other vet hospital and they prescribed her antibiotics and pain medicine and recommended expensive dog probiotics and having her anal glands expressed monthly. Fortunately, she recovered, but a year later she got another abscess. I took her to Dr. Covington where Esther was prescribed an antibiotic and pain/inflammation medicines with a follow up in two weeks. I gave Esther the medicines as prescribed and within two weeks her abscess cleared up. I also gave her plain yogurt as a probiotic at Dr. Covington's recommendation (no expensive dog probiotics!) for helping soothe her gut while on antibiotics. Dr. Covington didn't recommend monthly expression, but advised that I keep an eye out for certain tell-tale signs of this reoccurring. I appreciate that Dr. Covington didn't recommend regular treatment "just in case", but rather, saved my money and my dog's comfort by giving me tools to keep an eye on her and knowing what to do in the future. I highly recommend his animal hospital even if it's a bit of a drive for you! Read Less

I have been going to Mitchell Mill for over 12 years. I have 3 dogs, 2 cats that I adopted from them. I bring them for vet care, doggie day care and boarding. Dr. Covington is great. She is honest and down to earth. You know she really cares for animals. So much so, she has rescue as part of the hospital. I was very upset by the bad reviews. Unfortunately when adopting a rescued pet you don't always know what your getting into. And one thing taken care of may reoccur or lead to another. All I have to say is the have been wonderful to my fur babies. I even had the worst dog in the world. He would escape the boarding cages, run away. He was a mess. But just like me, they loved and cared for him . Also, my Mom came down to visit and her elderly dog took a turn for the worse. Dr. C treated him with love and compassion. She helped my mother through the loss of beloved pet with love and compassion. I highly recommend them to all my friends.Read Less

I adopted my puppy from Mitchell Mill 10 days ago. When we arrived to pick up our puppy, it was chaos in the office and they put us in an exam room with our puppy. The facility was kind of run down and not a place where I would want to spend much time. I understand that It was a busy time at the office but I felt very pressured to make a quick decision about whether we wanted to take our puppy home. They made a very big deal about the fact that many other people had expressed interest in our puppy and that they had to "fight people off" while we were on our way to see her. It just added a lot of pressure to making this big decision. The evening we brought her home, I saw worms in her feces. The next morning, I brought her to another vet closer to where we live and they said she had tapeworms. I was shocked that Mitchell Mill did not recognize this while my puppy was in their care, or disclose this to us. I called them to let them know, because their adoption agreement states that you need to tell them about any illnesses that occur within 2 weeks of adoption. They were very defensive and said that tapeworms are hard to identify unless the dog is shedding the segments in their feces and that the standard fecal test does not test for tapeworm. All of that may be true, as I am not a vet or animal expert, but I find it hard to believe that the first bowel movement she had after we brought her home was the first time she had shed the worm segments... Needless to say, the other vet gave her a dewormer and she is ok now.MMAH also spayed my puppy and did not send her home with an e-collar or provide us with any wound care instructions. She ended up eating her stitches after a week and I had to make yet another trip to the vet to get her an e-collar and make sure things weren't getting infected.Despite all this, I am giving 2 stars: 1 star because I called them many times when we were planning to come in to pick up the puppy and they were very patient and friendly. Second star because without them we would not have our puppy, whom we already cannot imagine our life without. Read Less

We took our dog here because it was recommended to us by someone who works with animals. We thought our dog had an ear infection and were grateful they would see him right away. First impressions; feral cats running around outside, dumpy building and a strong smell of urine throughout the building (long term problem, not like a pup just had an accident). In the hallway, where the examination rooms are, trash bags were piled to almost the ceiling (why don't they have a dumpster?).The examining room could not accommodate our 90 lb dog. Our previous vet (in another state) had a table that lowered so the dog could step on- like the one groomers use. This room had a counter top that in fact was higher than usual. Also, the vet tech and vet could not keep our dog still- we had to wrestle with him. Our previous vet had a technique of hugging the dog so he wouldn't wiggle while he was being examined. We never had to be part of the exam. Here, we even had to lift our dog's jowls so his teeth could be examined (after we suggested it).He received a couple of shots that were coming due and a test for Lyme. My husband was waiting in the waiting room for all the results when he could hear one staffer yelling in an alarming manner to another about our dog. Not professional. Also, they recommended an antibiotic, and then filled the prescription out of different bottles (so there are different colored pills). At this point, we question whether our dog actually tested positive for Lyme, but we will address it with a different vet.Overall, between the lack of cleanliness and what feels like a poor examination I would not recommend this vet. We began taking our animals here because their location is convenient to our home.  They seemed to do fine for several visits: routine shots, ear infections, etc.  Their groomer is great. We had taken our dog to have some growths surgically removed.  The stitches opened up on one area and it became infected (visible puss).  They stapled the site closed and sent him home without any antibiotics.  OK, I thought, they're the professionals and don't want to over-prescribe, I'm fine with that.  About 10 days later, though, my friend took the dog back to have stitches removed on the other sites.  One site had only healed at the deepest layer but was still a wide open gash I could fit my entire thumb in.  They said it was a tough spot to heal, sent him home and told us to keep an eye on it.  I was horrified when I saw the wound and couldn't believe they sent him home like that, again, with no antibiotics.Rather than wait around for it to get infected, I immediately made an appointment at our previous vet's across town in Cary.  They saw my dog that afternoon and cleaned the site, created a new incision for fresh blood flow, and restitched the site.  He is still healing.  I am not a vet and have no idea whether what Mitchel Mill did fits within standard care or not.  I do know though, that there is no way I was going to allow my dog to walk around with a gaping wound like that.  I won't be bringing my pets back here. This is Dr Covington and I am the owner and sole practitioner of the hospital and founder of the rescue. I have been practicing since 1996 and rescuing animals since 1998. To those of you who love to make negative comments about our rescue...I say this to you...how many animals have you rescued today, or this week or this year. My staff and I work endless hours for these animals to rescue them from HIGH kill shelters, rehabilitate them mentally, emotionally and physically, whether it is long term mange treatment, amputation of a horribly fractured leg, or try and pull them out of their traumatized coma they are in from the stress of being dumped at the shelter. These animals are dumped on a regular basis, come and walk in my shoes and go to a shelter and see the scared faces, the shivering and sometimes emaciated bodies that we see, and pick and chose who to save and who to leave behind. My staff and I spend hours working with these animals, and we have several volunteers who come on a daily basis to walk the dogs, teach them basic commands and to learn to walk on a leash. And yes we do have a professional trainer who works within our clinic and does volunteer to work with the occasional animal who needs some extra attention. How many of you have volunteered to work with a rescue dog lately??? Sometimes we even take the animals home to work with them and give them a normal environment to that we are better able to match them into a perfect home. We let our cats roam free around the clinic so that they are better socialized and to get them used to other animals. Also we usually have several rescue dogs out and around the reception area to also get attention and spend time with them. Before you criticize our rescue, our animals, come and see what we do first, and don't just judge on an 8 week old puppy who you keep for 2 days, and then return and didn't even ask about how to work with this PUPPY issues, you just dumped him back to us, and then judged. By the way, he is doing great and yes we have worked with him since Day 1...we made it a priority with our trainer and he was deemed a NORMAL 8 week old puppy, not an aggressive puppy. We try hard to match these animals with the right home and yes sometimes the match does not fit, so we try again ,but that does not mean we are adopting aggressive animals. That is why we have a 30 trial period with refund of adoption fees so that we are sure it is the right match for the animal and the family. How many other rescues do that, and certainly shelters don't have a trial period. Think before you criticize, make sure you know the correct facts about a situation or it could literally cost a life!!!!!! The former vet finally suggested putting Dean to sleep. I sought a second opinion at Mitchell Mill Animal Hospital. Dr. Covington suggest putting Dean on a cheaper medicine and special diet. Two years later the old cat is still around and loving life. Sadly I had to put my other 14 year-old cat to sleep last Fall. Mitchell Mill tried vigorously to save his life, but the old guy was in terrible shape. Mitchell Mill's staff was very accommodating and compassionate when it came time to say goodbye to Redd. They allowed me to cry and take my time saying goodbye. They made me feel as though Redd and I were the only patient and customer they had that day. They clearly care about animals deeply and the rescue is a passion. I have no qualms about giving to this animal rescue. I know good will come of it. I can't say enough good things about them. They helped make it more bearable to say goodbye to Redd. They gave Dean a new lease on life when his old vet wanted to give up. For this, they are almost more like family than the vet. Read Less

Dr. Covington and her staff are the best. Mitchell Mill Rescue takes the animals that would otherwise be put down at the local animal shelters and gives them a chance to be a beloved family member. They take the injured and the sick, and give them the second chance that no one else will. There will always be a cat to greet you at the door and puppies to charm you on the front lawn. This is a passion for Dr. Covington. I have seen the entire facility and it is awesome. It is set up to give the animals there the best experience possible and to socialize the rescues with people and other animals. They have always taken excellent care of my animals (3 cats and 5 dogs). I had to have one of my dogs put down earlier this year and could not have asked for a more comforting experience than what I experienced with their staff and the compassion they showed for my baby. Yes it may be a little crazy at times but what home isn't when there are critters running around playing and happy. My previous vet made me feel like my animals were just an assembly line product to be hurried in and out fast to make the most money. Mitchell Mill makes us feel like family. My babies love them. They are not in it for the money...they are in it for the animals. Read Less

I read the reviews below and honestly- I'm shocked. I am on my third dog and Mitchell Mill is my vet for life. Dr. Covington honestly LOVES animals and IMO it translates into a terrific Animal Hospital. The staff- from the girl at the front desk to the assistants all love animals and are sweet and kind to them. Yes, when you walk in there will be a cat or two who greet you, yes, there will be a dog or two hanging out by the receptionist's feet- IMO its what makes it such a ""comfy"" place for my pets (and me). Also, this is a neighborhood vet. They are wonderful for pets. I don't think it would be an ideal vet for dock divers ect- they do have drawbacks like feeding Science Diet ect vs California Natural and the like. However, for your pet? Perfect vet who remembers you and your animal. I have had nothing but good experiences here. Great advice, warm staff, healthy pups- what more do we need?My dogs are THRILLED to go to the vet- who can say that? Read Less

I am also shocked at the bad reviews below. I used to take my animals to another animal hospital but we always felt like just another patient. We heard of Mitchell Mill from a friend and figured we would give them a shot, and we never looked back. Everytime I go in with my pets I am greeted with a smile and a Hello. I am also usually greeted my another furry friend or two. They allow their resuces to walk around the hospital and I think that is wonderful. I'm glad they allow their animals to walk around instead of being stuck in kennels all the time. Their staff is always friendly and make sure that my pet is healthy and happy. They know who I am as well as my pet. They know that I consider my pets as my children and they treat them as such. You can tell they really love what they're doing. I too have toured their facilities and they are sanitary and clean. Their kennels are big enough for my animals to be comfortable (seeing as I have boarded before) and they have fenced in areas to be let out in during the day. I never have a second thought as to board my animals or not, I know they'll be taken care of as if they were their own animals. Read Less

My experiences with Mitchell Mill as a vet and a rescue have been wonderful. I am shocked at all the negative comments, but we are all human and no one is perfect, so I do not expect Dr. Covington, or anyone else, to be perfect. Dr. Covington has been my dog and cats doctor for years and we have always be treated with respect and the employees are very kind and helpful as well. We have boarded with them as well and toured the facitlity and it is kept clean and sanitary. They do have a rescue and many of the rescue animals can be seen throughout the clinic and I applaud them for letting them out and not just keeping them locked in kennels all day. Many of the rescues I have met there have serious medical conditions and are the ""rejects"" at the shelter so Dr. Covington takes them and fixes them. Their adoption fees are comprable to other rescue in the area ($100 for cats and $200 for dogs). I know many people with adopted animals from Mitchell Mill and they are totall satisfied. It hurts me to see all the negative aspects of something brought up when Mitchell Mill does so much for the good of animals. Not only are they a vet clinic that is reasobaly priced and fair but they save dogs and cats from shelters on a weekly basis. These ladies are angels in the human form and I thank them for taking such great care of not only my animals but the one's left behind! Read Less

I adopted a puppy and was given paperwork that turned out to be the wrong info. The dog wasn't fixed and had parasites and a urinary problem. Either the paperwork was falsified or they're just that unorganized. It's unfortunate for their animals that are looking for a good home. Don't stop yourself from looking at adopting their animals but you should assume the animal has had no shots, no deworming, and probably not fixed. Read Less

Shame on you, Mitchell Mill! My experience: 1) The dog that I had visited with and agreed to adopt was sick, but they assured me she was recovering. 2) When I went to take that dog home they told me that she would instead be adopted out to someone who had filled out an ONLINE APPLICATION for the dog hours before I had filled out my IN-PERSON application. The person who received the dog had not even met her. -- THAT'S SOME RESPONSIBLE MATCHING! 3) I asked to visit with another dog and was told that he could not be socialized. He was 3 months old.... Isn't that a little like saying a 3 year old will never learn to read? 4) After almost having to BEG to see the dog, I finally was able to visit with him and discovered that he was incredibly sick - they told me it was a respiratory infection. That was only ONE of the problems. He also had (unbeknownst to me) demodectic mange. I can only imagine how many other animals also suffered from it, especially considering the FILTHY atmosphere. 5) I had to pay for the remaining respiratory medicine. If I had adopted him a week later, I wouldn't have had to buy his leftover prescription. Instead, I had to pay for multiple visits to another vet - 3 MONTHS OF WEEKLY VISITS to treat his skin INFECTION. I have never had such a terrible interaction with a veterinary hospital/""rescue"" group. I have adopted another animal from the Wake County SPCA (sickly, as well) and that experience was wonderful. I was fully informed of that animal's medical conditions (full disclosure) and was happy to provide a donation. I honestly believe that Mitchell Mill is just that - a Mill: ""A process, agency, or institution that operates in a routine way or turns out products in the manner of a factory."" In other words, they don't see homeless animals and compassionate people - they see dollar signs. I wish I could sell my soul to the devil and pump out sick homeless animals for cash. But instead, I think I'll curl up with my loving animals, contented by the fact that I actually care. Read Less

Started vaccines way too young (5 weeks age!) and neutered too young per my current vet. I had difficulty getting them to fax records, then the ID description didn't match my pup, I adopted via a neighboring county's rescue program, and commend their efforts. But compromising my pup's health early on is a poor standard to set for the pets they adopt out! I trust my current vet's experience, research, and advice, and they are always good about honesty with me. They will wait to further vaccinate and informed me of some of the predisposed conditions my pup may get and how to observe and prevent them as much as possible, all due to early and over-vaccinating, and neutering too early, affecting appropriate organ, bone, and muscle development! And Mitchell Mill included nutrition advice that is very old school, pet food industry recommendation. My vet placed my pup on high protein, high bioavailability and digestibility immediately. I can't review on their exam thoroughness or facility, but with the mentioned shortsights I don't want to patron them either. Read Less

It's nice to foster animals, but there is a whole zoo loose in the office, and the workers don't clean up after these animals when they urinate on the wood floors, even if you politely point out a dog urinating on the floor; hence the smell. Knowing they have dogs for adoption, I went in and was only shown 1 dog, which the brought out to me while others were kept hidden. Poor thing had not been bathed and still had obvious parasites. And that's the dog they WOULD show me. The adoption fee was $250, which seemed high for a still parasite-infested dog. Read Less

Read Less

Read Less

I rescued my furdaughter Beckett from MMAH almost a year ago, the process was easy and quick...they even let us bring our other dog to meet her before bringing her home! I have continued to take her there for her vet needs (except for when they were closed at night and I took my pup to a vet ER...biggest waste of hundreds ever! They didn't even get the diagnosis right...but the next day I went to MM they said it was obvious what she had and she was back on her paws in no time!) The staff is awesome and helpful as well...I recommend them for all their services! They truly care :) Read Less

Mitchell Mill, Dr. Covington & the entire staff goes above and beyond in the number of pets they rescue and the care they provide. We recently adopted Tiny Tillie from them, but they also assisted my daughter with a pregnant stray she took in. They supported my daughter and Kali, the mother dog, through her pregnancy, help in the care and fostering of the puppies, and the eventual adoption process for the puppies. My daughter kept the mother dog and one of the pups. Mitchell Mill is a super supportive organization that gives back so much to the entire community, all for the simple love of animals. We received all the paperwork for the pet and were given a health history and if we ever had any questions they were right there to answer! They also want to stay in touch and check on the pet and make sure things are going well and I highly value that personal interest they show. I've seen a certified dog trainer out at MMAH that can help you if you have training questions for your new adoptee as well. MMAH and staff are dedicated each day to providing homes for rescued pets and in turn they offer us (the public) a special place where we can find our soulmate and missing part of the family! We adopted a puppy here and noted that he was having behavioral issues with grawling and biting adults in our home. We returned the puppy to the Animal Hospital and they immediately put the puppy back up for adoption. They stated that they were going to do an evaluation on him. I would not think that they would be able to do this in a matter of hours. They were very disfunctional here. We got very attached to the puppy and hated having to return it. I just hate it for the family that may adopt him if there is truly something wrong with the puppy!!!! Read Less

I too am surprised by the few negative reviews. Dr. Covington and her staff saved the life of my beloved 12 year-old cat after he developed megacolon. I had always been pleased with my former vet until big Dean became ill. The poor cat went through a painful ordeal and was put on expensive medicine that did nothing.
