Thank  you for your kind treatment of our Labs.  Surgery done on one was a success and your diagnosis and subsequent euthanasia today on the other was heartbreaking but necessary.

My sweetheart Murphy is blind and diabetic and experienced crystals in his bladder which causes him pain and no able to urinate. I brought him here only because his primary care Veterinarian recommended bringing him here. Best thing ever was driving here to this hospital. Upon arriving we didn't have a wait they immediately took Murphy back and started helping him. All the vet assistants were nice and also very gentle with him. His doctor was fabulous and though I'm aware of all that was happening he still broke everything down into what, how and the plan of treatment.Moving forward Murphy had to stay for surgical removal of the stones and crystals from his urethra and bladder.  The surgeon called be before the surgery and talked with me for at least 30 mins and was very in detail about what was going to take place. At the end of the day he called me back to inform me Murphy had done well and that he'd need to stay a few days to ensure he pees etc and his levels come down for his glucose. I'm proud to say as I sit here now I'm picking up my fur baby and taking him home today! These Veterinarians and assistants and front desk ladies are simple the best! You won't go anywhere and receive such stellar service and I do mean that! The building is very clean and nice inside with bathrooms for us humans should you need to use them.. Thanks to everyone for helping my Murphy Read Less

Our GSP had a tick in his eyeball and we didn't want to wait until morning to see our vet. We called this emergency vet and they told us we could come in and that they would help at no cost if the techs could manage to wrangle the tick out. Meanwhile the other vet place wanted $93 just to step foot in the door! Our little guy can be very shy and the tech was so patient and kept reassuring our Raufoss everything was going to be okay! Her name escapes me (brunette/curly hair) but she was absolutely awesome! Thank you so much to everyone there! We appreciate the kindness and helpfulness with our pup! Hopefully we won't have to go back but if we do or someone we know needs an emergency vet we will recommend this place! Read Less

This isn't a completely negative review. I did enjoy a few of the vets and techs. They did a fairly good job, I believe, aside from telling me that an MRI for my dog would be around $1-$2K. Try $4,500 at NC State. My 7 year old dog spent the last 5 days of his life at this emergency vet and then at NC State, only to find out that he had brain cancer and inflammatory brain disease. He came home from NC State on a Monday night, and he pretty much just gave up on life. He was in a lot of pain, and it was very obvious he was suffering, so we had to make that decision for him. He was my best friend and he was way too young. This has been 2 months ago, but a few key things about how it was handled still bother me.We take him in at around 11:45PM. Me, my mother, and one of my very dear friends. They direct us to a room and have us lie him down on a blanket, only to have us pick him back up a minute or two later to go and weigh him. Why? Why didn't they have us weigh him when we were first carrying him in? This is the front desk girl, by the way. Fairly certain her name was CRYSTAL. I guess she didn't realize OR care that he was in the most pain he had ever experienced in his life. Then she weighed him. She told me the total of what the euthanization was going to be, and then told me the cut off was 60 lbs, which he was right at. Therefore, it ended up being an extra $50 or so. No problem, front desk lady, I've only spent about $6,000 at this point and I'm losing my best friend. Would you like me to add some gratuity to this bill as well for your stellar customer service?!The lack of tact from this individual only gets better. We take him back into the room and lie him down again, as the doctors get ready for this horrible situation. Not 5 minutes later, this SAME inconsiderate front desk girl came in, as I'm spending the last minutes with my best friend of 7 years, and hands me a clipboard asking me to pay. I was too emotionally drained to be pissed at that moment, but afterwards, all 3 of us were. We spend our last 15 minutes with him as he begins to thoroughly howl in pain in his sleep, as to which my friend took it upon himself to get up and go searching for the doctors letting them know it's time. He was put down at 12:30AM on June 12th, 2018. As if not the worst day of my life, it's also sad to have these negative memories of one's lack of social skills, customer service, and downright emotional sympathy. This may be protocol for this front desk girl's job description, but myself, and the others involved found it extremely unacceptable and disrespectful. Very unhappy with this!! Read Less

Overall, my dogs treatment was exceptional. I know they did everything for my Harley that they could. Dr. Richmond was great and very reassuring, but something just doesn't sit well with me about what happened when I brought my dog in. I had rushed him over from my personal vet who pretty much had prepared me for my dog to die. When we got there he was rushed in and had tests done. Dr. Richmond came in with a positive attitude and explained that my dog was stable and he was looking good. She was very hopeful that Harley was going to take  a turn for the better so that got my hopes up after our personal vet telling me he wasn't going to make it. She recommended an ultrasound and of course an overnight stay bc he was so sick. What upsets me is, I asked a tech if I could see him before I left bc I knew he was not in the best condition and he was old so I wanted to see him just in case something did  happen. I was told that they were to busy, had 30 other animals in the back, he was already hooked up in ICU, and they would have to get two people to carry him out.  So, after paying the deposit, which was about $1200, it was to much of a hassle for them to let me see my dog. Given the positive note from Dr Richmond though, I left understandingly. I wish I would've demanded seeing my dog after paying out that kind of money though because little did I know that would be my last chance to ever get to see him again. Dr Richmond had called the next morning said everything was fine. Harley was stable they we're just waiting on the ultrasound. Well, they got the ultrasound and all of sudden things had gone down hill. Dr. Richmond was worried, but she would call if she saw any changes. I was never once offered the chance to come see him. She called an hour and 45 minutes later to tell me my dog had died. Then, I was immediately transferred over to reception where we had to pay for the rest of the bill which was around $600 and change. I paid almost $2000 dollars! I did not expect this to be a cheap visit. I knew it would be expensive, but what I didn't expect was to be treated as an annoyance or inconvenience for asking to see my dog before I left him to die with strangers.  I didn't get to say goodbye and I didn't get the closure I so desperately need right now. I just feel like this office was very insensitive to the situation. To be paying that kind of money, I feel like they could've been a little more understanding and sympathetic to what I was going through as a dog owner. Pets are like family members, and I feel like he was just a number to them. I am kicking myself for walking out of that office without seeing him one last time. I think the office could use some sensitivity training. There was no sympathy whatsoever. That's why I can't give this place 5 stars. Read Less

Apparently when you’re the only overnight trauma facility in town, you don’t really need to focus on training the front staff on professionalism or offer even close to fair prices. My dog, unfortunately, was referred here for an overnight stay for IV fluids and an ultrasound. When we first arrived, we were completely ignored by the front staff for a good minute or so - they were not talking with other clients or on the phone or anything - they were highlighting blank forms....and when I approached - without even looking up at me was told “it’ll be a minute.” I understand that working in a trauma center must be very stressful at times, but if the staff is that jaded when it comes to dealing with customers going through a traumatic event....it’s time to move on to another career. Anyways - it didn’t get better from there. When it came time to go pick my dog up so my dog could undergo emergency surgery - we called ahead from my vets office so he would be ready to go- and when he arrived of course he was not ready and found out they were waiting on their payment system to come back up which had already been down for 1.5 hours so they could get their final 20% (after paying $1100 when we dropped him off for ONE NIGHT STAY/ultrasound) that we owed knowing good and well that we were in a time sensitive situation. Even after explaining, again, that we needed to go ASAP and that our vet cleared his schedule to perform the surgery for us - it still took them almost another half hour to bring me my dog. They finally offered to make a copy of my credit card so we could take our dog to his surgery and said they would run it when their system came back up. Why didn’t they offer that option originally? They also said they could possibly do the surgery for us that evening for $3k which is why we took him to our vet who graciously acted quickly and preformed the surgery immediately after seeing the ultrasound results - and for $625- not even close to $3k. I would gladly pay whatever amount of money is needed to save my dog but don’t appreciate getting taken advantage of. It’s not lost on me that an emergency facility would understandably be more expensive, however that’s a bit extreme and doesn’t seem fair. There was nothing positive about my experience at this place (with the exception of a dr who did actually call me and explain the ultrasound results - she was professional and communicated as expected) It’s clear it’s nothing more than a business for them- no empathy, no customer service, no sense of urgency....I highly recommend you consult with your primary vet before ever taking your pet here if possible. I am very grateful for emergency services for my pet, and the doctors who assisted me were good, thorough, and took the time to answer all my questions, however, the clinic itself was really dirty. If it had been busy when I was there I would understand a bit more, but there was only one other person there. It was dirty enough that I didn't want to sit down and was really concerned about infection in my dog if they had needed to do any type of surgery. Every room I went into (waiting room and examination room) was so incredibly dirty. HUGE hairballs like tubleweeds were rolling around, it looked like they hadn't mopped in months. The exam table had old fluids on it from a previous pet, as well as the on the floor and on door. I was worried about all that getting into my pet's open wound and causing infection. If she isn't allowed to lick her wound, surely she shouldn't be allowed to get whatever that fluid is in her wound. Read Less

I had to take my fur child here in the middle of the night after he had woken me up by itching himself like crazy. I saw that his face had swollen up like a balloon (clearly he was having some sort of allergic reaction) and I immediately called this facility to see if they were open. They were very friendly and explained exactly how to get here and what to do once I arrived. Seeing as how it was the middle of the night I was one of the only customers there, but I was appreciative of how quickly they got me in. The vet (can't remember her name!) was super nice and informative, and she even saved me some money by deciding not to run unnecessary labs. She quickly treated my pup with some Benedryl/steroid shots and had me stick around for a little bit to make sure it was working. I appreciated her taking the time to explain to me what she thinks happened and how to treat it. It was pricy (as it usually is when you don't have pet insurance) but that was expected. I would highly recommend using this facility if you have a future need /emergency for your pet. I accidently shut my poor doggies tail in the door last night and brought her here because I was worried she may have fractured it. From start to finish the service was wonderful - the front office girl was SO kind to me as she could definitely tell I was really upset about hurting my dog and the interaction from the on call nurse and doctor (Dr. White) were both fantastic. They were prompt, thorough, and knowledgeable and made me feel very comfortable with my dog's care. I was made aware of the cost of each procedure as well as the necessity of each exam as we went through the diagnostics of my dog's injury which I felt made them above average. I really appreciated Sue calling to follow up today on my dog and am very grateful I was able to get such good service for my best friend last night. Oh and we were also followed by Dr. Turner who checked in on us several times and genuinely cared about our doggies well being. I couldn't give the 1/2 star. Half for picking up the phone.  Front desk person was not friendly at all. We waited for more than an hour when this lady came out with her dog. She was upset. She said that she waited for 20 minutes right where we were then at least an hour inside and nobody even acknowledged them or say something about the long wait. The receptionist just ignored her and picked up a call. When the lady with the dog told her she's very unfriendly, she smiled sarcastic. Then I told her too. Waiting area cold with 3 wooden benches. 2 water fountains, not even a magazine you can look through. 2 tvs. Politics. Front desk person kept going somewhere inside then come back, watch tv, laughing at the political jokes then leave again. I work with public daily. I'm a stickler for great customer service. This was no good customer service, no place I'd take my baby. It is one more hospital on College Rd that closes at 11. It is also 10 dollars cheaper. We did get to go there. Initially, when I dropped Rocky off for an evaluation by Dr. Williams, I was upset because it took several hours to get a call back regarding his findings and recommendations. However, after Dr. Williams returned my call, I realized that the delay was because he is so thorough and wants to ensure he has time to answer all questions without being rushed . The staff at the reception area, triage, and ICU were also very patient and caring, and never made me feel that I was being a bother when I called to check on Rocky. Being away from home when your pet becomes seriously ill is nerve shattering.  Will we find good care on a Saturday evening?  Can we trust the people?  This is the situation we were in on May 20 in Oak Island NC.  Away from our usual vet, but realizing our little dog was suffering, we sought the help of this center.  We were so very fortunate.  She and we were in the best hands possible for the difficult situation we faced.  The care and compassion was beyond compare.  Unfortunately, our little fur baby was In such distress that it was out of our intense love for her that we made the difficult decision to end her suffering.  The staff eased us through the process in a way that made us glad we ended up in their facility.  We opted for cremation and two days later we again made the journey to Wilmington to pick up our fur baby's ashes. Once again, we were rewarded for our decision with excellent care.  Her ashes were preserved in a very nice wooden box with a brass plate for engraving. A card with lovely sentiment on the loss of our pet, as well as a sprig of fresh rosemary (a symbol of remembrance).  They had also included a plaster imprint of her paw with her name and date.  Needless to say we were blown away at the compassion exhibited by this group.  I readily recommend them for all who love their pets and want the best care possible. Several years ago our dog had routine ear surgery. He did fine during the surgery. However, during the night he went into respiratory distress and died. My husband and I are both medical professionals. After speaking with the vet, we believe that he had too much pain medication and perhaps was not being monitored enough post op. We understand there are risks to surgery and that medical professionals are human. We were devastated as he was like a child to us. The vet also felt very bad and actually cried with me. It was a devastating experience. The vet called a few days later to check up on us. I asked her about the bill and she said "don't worry about it, it's handled." My husband went to pick up our dog's ashes and also asked about the bill. We were told not to worry about it. We never recieved one bill in 8 years. Eight years later our new dog was hit by a car. We really did not want to return to this vet. However, we wanted to be able to visit our dog daily and wanted his treatment close by. He needed surgery to fix both of his hips. When we arrived they said we still had a $2000 bill. I explained what had happened. The old vet no longer worked there. We are very honest people and would never just not pay our bill. We really were told years before that the bill had been "handled." As stated before we never got a bill in 8 years. After our dog had been hit by car, the vet was very kind and took time to explain our options. I would give the vet and medical care he recieved a 5/5. The reason I would only give this place 2 stars is the treatment after his surgery. I was promised 6 months interest free on one payment through their care credit card and 2 years interest free on the other enourmous bill. Right away I noticed that I was being charged interest on the card. I called the credit card company and was told the mistake was on the vet's end. I called them twice and my husband also went in to try to fix their mistake. We were told they would look into it and fix problem. The next month problem was still not fixed and I called again. Same thing. Life got busy, I have 4 children and my payments came out automatically. I just assumed that after three phone calls and a visit to vet, our problem would be fixed. I dreaded looking today, but saw that after 7 months I am still being charged a high interest rate. I find it very frusterating to have to call so many times to fix a problem. I would not recommend using one of their credit cards. I have used the care credit card in past to pay for braces and have had no issues. I never would have used this payment option had I known the high interest rate. I hope that I do not have to return to this place. I called again today with no response. My only option is to try to pay off this high interest rate card as fast as possible. I feel like they were very dishonest with my credit card. We have good credit so our credit score has nothing to do with the interest rate. Read Less

Our cat Ziggy was attacked by a pit bull on Monday afternoon and we took him to the Animal Emergency Hospital immediately. Hospital staff took him back instantly when we walked in with him. A doctor talked to us that night, showed us his x-rays, explained the injuries she had found so far and said that she would continue looking for more injuries. They kept him in the hospital in the intensive care unit for the next 3 days. During that time, Dr. Ned Williams talked to us frequently both on the phone and in person, keeping us fully informed of Ziggy's status and our treatment options. On Thursday night, despite all their efforts, Ziggy died. We knew Ziggy's condition had taken a turn for the worse on Thursday and Dr. Williams had gently prepared us for the possibility that he would die. Despite Ziggy's death, we have nothing but the highest praise for Dr. Williams and the staff at the hospital -- they treated both Ziggy & us wonderfully and we are absolutely confident that they did everything medically possible for Ziggy. In addition, we saw and greatly appreciated that they treated Ziggy with TLC. We are very grateful to Dr. Williams and the rest of the staff for trying so hard to save our Ziggy. . I knew we were all in loving care as we kissed her goodbye.Read Less

My cat was very sick and I brought him in around 10pm on a weeknight. The staff was courteous, the Doctor was excellent and examined him very thoroughly. The diagnosis and treatment were correct and all results were sent to his regular vet as expected. I was given a quote on arrival, which ended up being consistent with the actual bill. The wait was a little long and it was somewhat pricey (maybe double regular vet), but that is expected for an after hours visit. Overall very satisfied with the level of service, and my cat is recovering nicely. Read Less

We came over to the emergency hospital because we had an EMERGENCY. Our dog was puking and leaking blood and diarrhea so we had her covered in a blanket. The vet tech saw us from behind the counter and asked us to have a seat. Another dog came in and his back legs weren't working so he took precedent. My wife and I understood that, yet we were forgotten about. After waiting 25 minuets the tech called our name and at the time our dog stopped breathing in the lobby and died. That got her back behind the counter very quickly. Thankfully Dr. Alicia Burkett worked her behind off and brought Willow back to life. I am extremely grateful for her and her skills and her passion. Thank you Dr Burkett for going above and beyond and helping us through tears and fears of losing our dog. You are great at what you do. It's tough to review fairly because the front end operations and actual vet care drastically differed. There was no communication of how long we'd wait or what the flow of operations were when we checked in so our heads were in the sand. There is no other option around Wilmington during the night. When you go make sure you communicate the severity of your animals issues and you might have an experience that's worthy of 5 stars. Read Less

I was referred to this hospital by another vet. I took my Golden Retriever to another vets office because his stomach was hugely distended after being x-rayed. The doctor wanted to transfer him to Animal Emergency & Trauma Hospital to be observed over night, to get pain meds and fluid through IV, and walked hourly; which the vet called ahead. When we arrived and explained to the receptionist; her response was its "only food bloat". We were told several times that someone would be out to talk to us. My dog was very dehydrated; I asked the receptionist if we could get a small bowl so I could give him some water. I was told no because someone would be right out. An hour and half later when I kept seeing people leave, no other patients coming in, and two vet techs talking in the small room by the receptionist desks; I requested the disk with the x-rays and medical records from the other vet. One of the vet techs who was socializing in the small room over heard me and started to give me an attitude about how busy they were earlier in the evening. Because of the lack of service and communication we left with our dog. All I wanted was some communication. Originally, I was told a vet tech would be out to look at my dogs stomach so I could give him a little bit of water; which never happened. Praying I was making the right decision, my husband and I took him home waking up every hour over night to walk him and give him a little bit of water at a time. Please train your staff in communication. I understand emergency come but all you have to do is tell people who are coming in it's going to be a while and don't have your staff socializing for extended period upfront when you someone waiting to be seen; it looks bad. We were only a transfer we didn't need another examination. I pray I never have to use your hospital!!!! Read Less

We were in town visiting our children for Christmas when our dog suffered a bad cut under his eye. The staff and doctors were very professional and the attention and advice by the doctor was excellent. The doctor took the time to explain the various treatment options and their consequences. We followed her advice and our dog is completely healed with no consequences. I have read some of the other comments and believe many of them to be misinformed. The fees and costs are very reasonably given that the hospital is only open after hours for emergencies and cannot enjoy the normal flow of revenues that other vet offices receive. Just like regular hospitals, the emergency room is a high cost facility. Read Less

My boy made a great recovery and he loved Dr. Burkhardt (hope I spelled that right). The technicians and vet were so kind and let me say good night to him because he was staying over night.

The vet (can't remember her name!) was super nice and informative, and she even saved me some money by deciding not to run unnecessary labs. She quickly treated my pup with some Benedryl/steroid shots and had me stick around for a little bit to make sure it was working. My dog had to have an ACL repair. He was an overnight guest for 3 nights. I wholeheartedly recommend this clinic to anyone needing specialized surgery for their furry friend. When we picked Rocky up, his incision and perianal area were very clean. It was evident he had received excellent care. Read Less

Williams and the rest of the staff for trying so hard to save our Ziggy. . I wish I could give them 100 stars. Read Less

We don't live in the area but have a beach house in the area where our family was to gather over Thanksgiving. Our Bassett Hound,Agnes, was dying of lymphoma. Knowing this may be her last trip to the beach we made contact with a local Vet in case we needed to put her down while here. It became obvious that Agnes's time had come on Thanksgiving morning and the local Vet's office was closed. Starting with the phone call to the emergency number the Vet had provided us, to the visit to their very nice facility, to the careful explanation to us as to what was going to happen and most especially to the compassion shown by Dr. White and her staff, It could not have been a better experience. Those of us who spend a lot of holidays here are fortunate to have this facility available to us. Read Less

Taking your beloved little dog to urgent care on a Wednesday night is never fun.  I found the doctor and the vet techs to be very professional and warm. The receptionist and waiting area, not so much.

Read Less

I was in there barefooted and no bra (a complete wreck) the lady at the front desk saw how distraught I was so she checked in on them getting my fiancé and I a room to wait in every five minutes. My boy made a great recovery and he loved Dr. Burkhardt (hope I spelled that right). The technicians and vet were so kind and let me say good night to him because he was staying over night. This place has the worst wait time. Our dog was transferred her just for overnight watching. No consultation was needed as they were to follow the normal vets protocols. 2 hours to get him taken back. Then when we were told to come in to bring some food and let him out, we waited in a room for over two hours because the doctor didn't even know we were there (although it was announced on the speaker twice). I get that it's busy but there's a complete lack of communication. If there were another animal emergency vet in town we would absolutely go there. Read Less
