Too expensive!!!
I have probably spent over $2,500 in 2 years at this vet (not including any heartworm pills). I have 3 dogs. I have an older dog who loves to play fetch with sticks. Well, he stopped eating for about a week, so I took him into the vet. They looked him over. They did a basic check up: mouth, ears, felt his belly, etc. So they decided that he needed an x-ray and did some blood work and then gave him some medicine. Well that was about $700. A few days later my dogs face swelled up. So I took him back to the vet. I guess this time they decided to actually look in his mouth and found a 3 inch stick embedded in the roof of his mouth that had begun to rot. So they removed it and gave him some antibiotics, another $300.
A year or so later the older dog started to lose a bunch of weight. His yearly was due, so I took him and one of the other dogs in. Of course you go in there and think, "I'm not going to get everything because it's going to be so expensive." Then they end up making you feel guilty so you do everything they suggest. Well the younger healthy dog ended up being about $180 for her heartworm test, lepto, parvo (didn't say distemper on the bill so I'm not sure if that is automatically included or not), exam, nails clipped, and parasite check. The older dog needed to get blood work done and he had an ear infection. So after the senior dog blood work, heart worm test, exam, lepto, parvo, ear exam, ear medicine, nails clipped, and paracite check his total was $360. So there is another $520. And they wanted me to come back in 2 weeks to give each of them lepto boosters for an extra $24 a piece. So, technically a $568 visit. Then the blood work for the older dog came back normal, so the vet suggested to put him on prescription food because his body has stopped absorbing the nutrients of the food he is currently eating. I asked her if we could just switch to a better quality food, she said no she thinks he should be on the prescription food. Then she suggested that we get his stomach X-rayed. She said they do this somewhere downtown for about $380, but that they could do it for $300 at the vet. I told her I would think about it and that I would come pick up the prescription and get the food from Petsmart. And she said, "Well we sell the dog food here, you can buy it from us." I said, "No, I would really like to buy it from Petsmart."
I was used to it being expensive but after 2 years with 2 dogs getting sick during that time period and then this extremely expensive visit I just decided to take my itemized bill to another vet and ask them for their prices. I went to 2 different veterinarians to check their prices. The first one was $185 cheaper for EVERYTHING that I had done. The other was $160.
Also, I wanted to take all 3 dogs in at the same time for this past yearly, but they said the 3rd dogs yearly wasn't due until September. Then two weeks later I get a notice in the mail that my 3rd dogs yearly is due in 2 weeks. Really?
So, naturally as a mother of 3 children and 3 dogs I am extremely busy. I don't appreciate them telling me that my other dog was due in September and now I have to find time to take off of work again because she is actually due a month after I took the other 2 dogs. And, I don't appreciate them making me feel guilty to do all of this testing and then charging me an obscene amount of extra money for their care. It is hard for me to think that they are not intentionally over charging and offering unnecessary "precautionary care" to get a little extra profit, especially after the X-ray and dog food conversation. And by the way I spoke with other vets and they said a better quality food would work fine. We bought him the Blue Chicken and Brown Rice and he already looks a million times better and has put on weight in less than 3 weeks.
Bottom line: Good care for the animals but too expensive and (in my opinion) probably offering unnecessary precautionary services to get a little more coin in their pocket. Read Less
