OVH has been good to our pets. This past week, I was certain I would have to put down my beloved dog, an 8+ year old Akita breed named "Piper." She was in great pain, lethargic, and was not eating and drinking properly. I knew she suffered osteoarthritis and had been giving her glucosamine and occasional pain meds. She improved somewhat but grew worse and began snapping and growling, even at me. My wife was afraid of her. I was troubled. She needed med treatment. Did not know how to move her or get her to the vet. Movement appeard to cause her bodiky pain. OTV scheduled a tech and Vet to come to my house and sedatell her. However, I coaxed Piper out of the house with vacuum cleaners and got her in the car, drove to OTV. She would not leave the car when we got there. Not for me or the tech. She was scary, growling and snapping. Looked like Ol' Yeller with rabies. It was very sad and disturbing. Pet owners remember pets as pups. We remember all the times they love on us. I knew she hurt and she was reacting in self defense. Any movement caused her great pain. The tech had to use a rabies collar to get her out. I hated it, but it was the only way. Aftr she was puled from my car, Piper limped into the Clinic. For any pet owner, that would be heart breaking. I feared the worst. Was she going to require euthanasia to stop her disablng pain? Piper stayed 2 nights. They had to sedate her to examine and groom her. Put her on pain meds and ran tests. She had thyroid issues. They called the third day and suggested she go home, because she had stopped eating, would not drink, so she was not getting her meds. I was afraid I could not get her home. Had her pain diminished enough to get her in and out of the car? I drove there to see how she was, whether she could tolerate another trip. When I got there, they took me to her pen. I had hamburgers and a leash hidden in my coat. There was a sign on her pen. In big, red letters was written the word, "BITES." I wondered whether she would hate me for taking her from her home, tricking her, causing her needless pain, and abandoning her to strangers? When Piper saw me, she stood, and jumped up slightly on her hind legs. It wasn't much, but it was a big improvement. She had not done that for months. They opened the pen and asked me to put her collar and leash on. Frankly, I questioned whether she would snap at me, but it went without incident. The Vet promised to transport her hone, if she had problems with the car. I got her home. That was 2 days ago. She took her meds from me, as the vet predicted and her improvement is renarkable. I know she is not yet painfree, but she can run and jump. She is eating and drinking. Piper will be on meds the remainder of her life, but it will otherwise be a normal life. Glad to have my Piper back. Thank you, Old Town Veterinary Hospital.Read Less
