I have known Dr. Crumley longer than I have known my own children. At that time, she was up in Louisburg and we needed a vet after moving down here. I will never forget one night when my cat developed fluid on the lungs and Dr. Crumley met me at midnight on a rainy fall night and pulled three large syringes of fluid off his lungs allowing him to breathe more comfortably. At that point, she recommended that I take him to the NCSU animal hospital where he was ultimately diagnosed with lung cancer (we kept trying to get him to stop smoking but you know cats... they just won't listen!). Sadly, we lost Addison but the level of caring that Dr. Crumley showed always stuck with me.We followed her to Heartwood animal hospital and she has been our primary vet for the last 20 years. There have been ups and downs with Heartwood. She had one vet who was truly awful. When I had to make the very difficult decision to euthanize my cat and took her in, the other vet walked in and said "I'm not going to kill your cat!" He proceeded to argue with me about my decision and basically made me feel like a monster. He did not "kill my cat" that day. He prolonged her suffering for another 2 weeks until I ultimately took her to VSH where they were compassionate, empathetic, and despite being an emergency vet hospital, charged less for the procedure.Heartwood is much more expensive than other vets in he area. I had a dog that required tooth extractions. Dr. Crumley quoted aroun 500 dollars. During the procedure, she called and said it was going to cost more like 1000-1200 dollars and did I want to proceed. Well, the dog was already on the table and under anesthesia so really didn't feel I had an option. Went to pick the dog up and the final cost was over 2200 dollars! Needless to say, I didn't have that kind of money. The front office person at the time was playing hardball ... told me to get a loan and apply for credit etc. ultimately they agreed to a payment plan which I spent 1year paying off.Between the experience with my cat and the surgery that cost more than our mortgage payment, I had pretty much decided I would not be returning to Heartwood.Until this spring...My dog (a different one from "toothless") had developed an infection in his toenail last summer. Took him to a vet while on vacation and she removed the toenail. He didn't get better so took him to Magnolia and the vet there said the first vet hadn't gotten the whole nail so he romeved the rest. Still wasn't getting better and took him to Youngsville Animal Hospital where she took a radiograph and said there was still a piece of nail and she amputated to the first knuckle. He did ok for about six weeks but still was reluctant to put weight on that foot. The vet said it was likely "ghost pain" and prescribed gabapentin... he got a little better.Several more months pass and he starts having skin problems and is quite lame. Took him back and I was told it was allergies and given an incredibly expensive medication (70 bucks for 2-week supply!). Seemed to help his itching but he was still lame. Took him to another doc in wake forest who didn't even look at his foot or notice the lameness and said it was allergies. That was when I decided to go back to Dr. Crumley. She didn't focus on his skin... she focused on his foot. She took more radiographs and saw that the bone in the on toe was being eaten away... most likely due to a tumor. She recommended amputation of the whole toe. I was concerned about cost given what happened with my other dog when he had surgery and Dr. Crumley was very mindful of that experience. The cost was higher than the other vet. Flip side, all the other vets had misdiagnosed the problem so at that point, the experience and insight into my dogs problem outweighed the cost factor. It has now been nearly three weeks since my dog had his toe amputated and he is doing great. He is back to his old smiley self, able to walk on all fours and has more energy and joy than I have seen in months. I didn't realize just how bad he felt until now that he is showing his normal personality! The cost of the surgery was spot on. While more expensive than the first partial amputation, I feel like she has gotten all of the tumor. By trying to save money by shopping around with other vets, I wound up spending much much more to diagnose and remove the tumor. Dr. Crumley acknowledges that their prices are higher than other vets. She said that is because they are "thorough". The evil vet who would not "kill my cat" has been replaced by a wonderful vet named Dr. Murray who is an excellent clinician and also good with humans. Overall, I am just grateful to have my dog back and realize there is a lot to be said for experience, thoroughness, and the continuity of care Heartwood provides. Thank you, Dr. Crumley and Dr. Murray! Read Less
