Visits often follow early signs such as increased scratching, reduced play, food refusal, hesitation to jump or run, or tension between pets in the household. It entails monitoring body weight, checking teeth health, evaluating joints and lungs, assessing heart rhythm, examining skin and hair coat as well as behavior analysis. Veterinarians compare the inputs to baseline records and use them to determine when it is appropriate to perform diagnostics, adjust diets, or schedule follow-up visits. Howell Avenue Pet Hospital provides vaccine administration, stool and blood testing, nutritional and oral healthcare support, chronic disease management, and seasonal care adjustment. New routines due to daycare, changes in weather, preparation for a senior influx and subsequent slowdown, and milestone-related issues can all lead to appointments. Every plan adjusts to the domestic architecture of nature stimuli in order to provide support systems that correspond to the living conditions of families. After each session, owners receive detailed notes about the visit and recommendations on scheduling and care, along with optional logs for food, mood, or motion. Pet owners who need to manage multiple or older animals can arrange staggered check-ins, follow-up home-based visits, and mobile adjustments. Been going to Howell Avenue Pet Hospital for years and totally trust both Terri McCarty, DVM and John McCarty, DVM who both have worked magic on my dogs and a neighbor’s cat. Some of the treatments can get expensive at times, but the price has been well worth it. The vet techs are also pros and let me watch as they bandaged my dog’s cut paw pad. (Cut his foot playing in a pond on some rocks). The bandage was so comfy that my dog didn’t try to chew or tear it off. He just left it on—no cone of shame required! Thank you, Howell Avenue Pet Hospital! 🐾 Read Less

I foolishly chose the Howell Ave hospital because it was close to where I live. I would not choose a physician based on that criterion. My poor cat Maya became the victim. I took her to the vet because of tooth problems. She was initially given a steroid injection. The day after I noticed a lump on her left shoulder. I feared the worst but then remembered the injection. I called the hospital and also went in person to ask the vet technician where she had given my cat the injection. I was never given the name of the technician, but was told both by the office and the vet that "normally" they would give the injection in a thigh. I kept asking if that "normal" procedure had been followed in this case, but was never given a straight answer, so I had no choice but to have a biopsy taken for $130. Needless to say, it was not a tumor but a swelling that had appeared the day after an injection and disappeared a week later. I had been told that my cat needed dental surgery to remove two teeth. It was expensive surgery, almost $700, which is more than I had and forced me to live on nothing two weeks before pay day. Stupidly, I also tagged a clause in the agreement that said that I gave the vet the go ahead to perform other "necessary" procedures beyond the extraction of the two teeth. I brought my cat in at 9 am and said that I wanted to stay with her during the surgery, but was told that was not possible, but also assured that she was going to be operated on early, around 10:30-11. I later found out that the surgery had not been done until the afternoon and that virtually all her teeth on one side and a couple of other teeth on the other had been removed. I was shocked to learn this. How did it go from 2 to virtually all teeth? My cat was also given pain medication that gave her hallucinations and extreme fear. I have never seen a cat with that kind of reaction. On top of this my cat developed an infection on the side where all teeth had been removed which is still being treated by another hospital, which now tells me that they may have to operate again on Maya to correct the mess Howell and specifically vet Betsy Klerk created. I warn anyone from taking their cat to Howell. Read Less

I've been bringing my dogs to Dr. Terry almost as long as they have been open. For YEARS I drove all the way to Amelia for my dogs vet visits (and we live in the city) until I found this vet. From the first day I brought my dogs in I knew I had found a vet for life. Terry and her staff are the best! The Doctor listens to me, my worries, and my insane babble. She is thorough, she charges an appropriate amount of money for the time she spends checking my dogs, following up with phone calls well after office hours, even calling me in a prescription for my dying dog at 10pm one night! To say they go above and beyond is obvious. I have mad respect for the skills and expertise they have shown, over and over again. Love these folks. Hands down, worth every penny. Read Less

We moved to Cincinnati in August, and shortly after one of our dogs came down with a stomach bug. In a hurry to find somewhere to take her, I saw the reviews for Howell Animal Hospital. I'm so glad we did. Not long after, we began a quick but painful road that ended in us having to put our dog to sleep. Everyone here was kind, accommodating, and never annoyed with my near daily phone calls with new questions about my dog. They did everything they could for her and when there was nothing else for them to do, they referred us to the specialist who could best help. I can not recommend this place enough and I know we will continue taking our remaining dog here for regular care. Read Less

Took a 60 pound stray here to get neutered so we could help him find a good home. The total bill came out to $372. I have had many dogs and have never paid more than $200 to have them spayed/neutered (large dogs included). Vet offices like this are the reason why people don't get their animals fixed- they take a simple and important preventative procedure and hike the price of services up to an astronomical amount. At no time were we told how much any of the services would be. The office visit alone was $45. The actual neuter service was $93. The cost for injected and inhaled anesthetics was $88. The vet said he had worms and sent him home with $71 worth of deworming medication that could be found online for $45. When we picked him up, he didn't even have a cone. They told us we could purchase one for $30. No vet who truly cares for the welfare of dogs and cats would be ok with charging this much for a simple surgery that is detrimental to help control the homeless animal population. Read Less

I lost my beloved cat Squeek over 4 1/2 years ago. I was immobilized by grief and failed to go retrieve his ashes. I have felt enormous regret about that (in)decision all of these years. I took my youngest cat to HAPH for treatment yesterday. As I was settling up the bill, one of the terrific women working the front desk told me that they had saved Squeek's ashes and she gave them to me, thoughtfully contained as though no time had passed. I cannot adequately express how much that meant to me. It was a demonstration of true compassion and respect - for me and for Squeek - that was totally unexpected. I am thankful to have this hospital in my neighborhood for all of the obvious reasons; however, the less obvious reasons also need to be shared with others. Thanks to the entire staff (I hope to know individual names at some point) for working to heal both their patients and those humans with whom they share their lives.Read Less

Our dog actually likes going to the vet! Dr. Terri has been so kind to us despite our endless list of  "first time puppy parent" questions. She has set our mind at ease many times and genuinely has our dog's best interest in mind. I like that she won't run tests just for the sake of it. When we brought our pup in because he was limping pretty badly, she consulted us on whether or not we needed an x-ray. (which amazingly can be done in-house). Based on her assessment of our dog and her acute observance of his body language, we were able to make an informed decision.I highly recommend this vet for all pet ailments.

Although it's called a pet "hospital," it's just a regular vet, plus a bunch of lab equipment. We bring our dog here as though Dr. Terri was his "GP." Read Less
