Northwest Animal Hospital

Columbus, Ohio
General Info
Northwest Animal Hospital is a Columbus-based vet practice devoted to ensuring pets across the community receive excellent, all-encompassing care. Located in Columbus, United States, the clinic is renowned for the professional and reliable approach to animal health which creates a supportive atmosphere for both animals and their owners. The experienced team provides personalized wellness plans, regular check-ups, and a broad array of treatments for pets. Services often include Orthopedic Surgery, Dermatology, Cardiology, Diagnostics, Behavioral Counseling, Anesthesiology, and Boarding. The procedures are performed in the clinic and aim at helping patients prevent or respond to the problems associated with poor oral health. The building is suitably constructed and equipped to ensure no animal anxiety during visits, thus facilitating the achievement of set goals. Pet owners frequently remark on how caring and communicative the staff is, which enables them to build a lasting relationship with their clients. Northwest Animal Hospital is continuing to grow as a pillar of the Columbus pet-owning community. The clinic’s professionals are always ready to help, whether it is to support young pets in starting their life journeys with good habits and practices or to assist senior ones struggling with chronic health issues. Their dedication to animal welfare is also apparent in their desire to constantly learn and stay updated with the latest veterinary medical developments. This ensures that each pet receives the highest level of care possible. It also promotes responsible pet ownership and community engagement, making it more than just a practice. Northwest Animal Hospital in Columbus structures veterinary visits to fit seamlessly into daily life while also addressing household needs and specific pet health goals. Ohio's model is equally accommodating to varying lifestyle choices, given the nature of today's society. Each visit begins with questions about household changes, new foods or supplements, energy levels, social behavior, and bathroom habits. Veterinarians perform head-to-tail physical examinations to check joints, muscle tone, oral health, skin, weight history and internal sounds. Afterward, they record their findings. Northwest Animal Hospital offers preventive exams, vaccinations, internal testing, and support for weight, diet, and pain management. It also conducts dental evaluations and provides in-house care for allergies, ear infections, and mobility issues. Depending on the animal’s age and health status, vets may recommend staggered visits to treat chronic problems and seasonal appointments for regular checkups. Advanced care targeting the latter may include labs or imaging as symptom patterns or behaviors change over time. When they discharge, clients obtain hard copies and have perpetual access to the charts, timelines, and reminders. The optional follow-ups, besides the basic ones, are based on design (severe cases of the pet type) and lifestyle. Households with multiple pets or caretakers often bundle appointments or stagger visits for convenience. Professionals might suggest implementing behavior plans and making changes to home mobility equipment, depending on individual needs. Northwest Animal Hospital seeks to establish a less stressful and more predictable veterinary experience in Columbus. The ability to build momentum through consistency while adapting to life in Ohio empowers me to take action early and remain aware while I feel supported.

Horrible! They are more interested in taking pictures of your animal for their FB page than they are in your pet's health. A nurse, or vet technicians as they call themselves, made notes about my reason for being there and approached to take temperature without even asking if my dog would be comfortable with it. It wasn't the first time I was taking my dog to a vet, and I knew he hated thermometers up his butt, so I had to stop her. The senior vet student then walked in with another nurse for the check-up and simply grabbed my dog. They did not have treats that my dog would like so they had no idea how to keep my dog calm. I have a very submissive animal who only hates having his behind touched (because of thermometers, of course). They mishandles him so much that he had to be muzzled. Even then, he submitted and sat down. But the vet student continued to use her long manicured nails to poke my dogs belly! Dr. Hird then walked in to mishandle my dog some more. They dragged my dog onto their examination table (which is shocking because my dog will happily climb those when given the command). It was so bad that I had to hold my dog to keep him from getting any more aggressive and then just tell the doctors to stop! They then proceeded to prescribe me steroids and "calming medication" for him. If my dog were aggressive, he wouldn't have walked up to them to apologize for barking at them, once his muzzle was off. They did not care to ask me about any current medication my dog is on or any allergies he might have, until I enquired! WTF. They even charged me $30 for a smear that I was not consulted about. Like "here you go! Take this massive bill we drew for making your dog uncomfortable and these tests and treatments you did not approve!" The doctors and staff are full of bullshit and have ZERO compassion for your animal. They not only will ignore your pet, but anything you have to say because they think you are stupid. Compare this experience to my experience at OSU, my dog did not even want to leave the doctors there because he got pampered so much. Every step was explained and the cost of treatment was discussed with me before taking further steps. Read Less

I have been taking my cats to Northwest Animal Hospital for years now after trying several other vets. Some of the things that stand out about this place: 1) Attentiveness of the whole staff. Every staff person I have encountered seems to not only know the details of my animals and their needs, but also is thoughtful about any concerns I might have. I feel that every person working there wants to make sure my cats and I get what we need. This makes a huge difference, especially when something is wrong with my pet! 2) Each of the vets that has helped me has taken the time to answer every last one of my questions and given me resources to better understand my animals. 3) Quick response to emergencies: When my animal has a sudden problem (way more often than I'd like) I call and they always seem to be able to get me in within an hour or so. 4) They check back with me. I get calls from the office afterwards to make sure that everything is going as expected. The person calling is kind and patient, is familiar with my situation, and makes sure all of my questions get answered. 5) My cats feel safer here than any other vet office we've gone to. Whatever they do to get the "Cat Friendly Hospital" status, it works. My cats don't freak out. (I'm sure the cats-only zone helps.) I'm grateful to them for taking good care of my cats--and me. We actually live in Los Angeles, but while my husband and I are on travel out of the country our yorkie, Azaylah (Zay), is staying with my parents. She's 14 with kidney disease and so we had to find a vet here in Columbus that could take care of her while we are away. We found Northwest Animal Hospital on Yelp, along with several other nearby vets, we picked this one at random and were pleasantly & quickly reassured we chose the right place. Great friendly staff who are very patient and helpful. The office is clean, decorated well and cozy. There is even a little children's play area and a separate cat waiting area! Definitely recommend this quality vet to take care of your furry family member! Read Less

My dogs LOVE coming here.  Yes, they LOVE the vet.  The staff is so friendly and gives them tons of attention (and treats), which makes them happy.  They've helped us through some complicated medical issues, which makes ME happy.  I used to live within walking distance of this place but even after moving and being closer to other vet offices I still come here. My dogs have as much fun going to the vet as they do on a walk, so I really can't disappoint them and take them elsewhere!  Appointments are usually pretty easy to get (especially if you don't mind which vet you see, which I don't).  The only issue I have is that they don't have any evening hours.  I don't get home from work until 6:30 on weeknights, so the only day I can take them is on Saturday.  I really wish they had one night a week where they were there until 7 or 8.  Otherwise, no complaints. After being a client for nearly 20 years, I am done with NAH. Today I found myself APOLOGIZING for showing up at my appointment time with my mom's dying cat. (There were 2 other clients ahead of us) Dr. Kolb did come in for 5 minutes, stood in the doorway, and told me, "That's bad" as the cat was laboring for breath. He "guessed" that the cat had congestive heart failure, and then talked to me like I was an idiot when I asked questions about what we could do, how long the cat might have, what was likely to happen in the near term (so my mom would have a chance to say goodbye.) Dr. Kolb asked me if I had never had any experience with someone with heart failure, like my questions were stupid. I took the cat to Medvet, where, after X-rays and a chest tap, AND a diagnosis of terminal cancer, not heart failure, he was put to sleep. No more of my (many) pet health care dollars for NAH. Read Less

Horrible! They are more interested in taking pictures of your animal for their FB page than they are in your pet's health. A nurse, or vet technicians as they call themselves, made notes about my reason for being there and approached to take temperature without even asking if my dog would be comfortable with it.

I have been bringing my animals to Dr. Hird for 12 years now. With her guidance, knowledge and genuine care for our animals, Dr. Hird has helped my wife and I provide the best possible care for our little ones! NWAH is a big reason why our 20 year old cat, Spitz, is still eating and playing like a cat half her age. Every staff memeber at NWAH is kind, considerate and empathetic. They genuinely care. I would never bring my "kids" anywhere else and I've recommended (and bragged about) Northwest Animal Hospital to so many people over the years. Thank you so much NWAH! Read Less
