The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center

Columbus, Ohio
General Info
The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center in Columbus interprets pet behavior as a communicative language expressed through tail position, stillness, sound, and pacing for households across Ohio. The initiation of examinations does not occur through physical contact but through focused attention. Staff observe micro-behaviors such as animal eye contact patterns combined with breathing responses to voices and movement tendencies toward or away from motion. Care then unfolds in parts. The way pets anchor their bodies or lean and stiffen determines how external checks on their skin, coat, and joints are performed. The emergence of trust signals triggers subsequent internal reviews for teeth abdomen and heart rhythm. During this time, pet owners deliver contextual information about alterations in their daily patterns alongside new auditory stimuli that provoke their pets' reactions and shifts in walking or feeding schedules. The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center provides a range of services including early-life exams and diagnostics along with energy balance strategies and oral health planning plus age-related joint tracking and illness-specific mapping. The duration of timeframes fluctuates according to behavioral patterns. Certain appointments progress rapidly due to unmistakable consent indicators. Certain developmental processes extend gradually across multiple phases which allows the animal to assimilate each step. Quiet areas and pause zones remain accessible for pets requiring recalibration before they proceed. The focus of post-visit care revolves around the concept of household translation. Observe sleep patterns while considering routine reintroduction techniques and monitoring silent indicators such as family withdrawal tendencies, appetite reduction, and spatial defensive behaviors. The tracking of timing along with symptoms is recommended to owners. At what time does restlessness emerge? During which daily period do hesitation levels reach their maximum? The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center assists families throughout Columbus and nearby Ohio regions by recognizing behavior as a living signal which pets communicate through daily pauses nudges and shifts rather than during crises.

Our sweet Buster was not breathing when we arrived . He was taken by gurney back to where they intubated him and then tried to lower his body temperature. He was not going to survive. The staff was so caring and gentle. He had developed an infection that simply overwhelmed him. These wonderful folks allowed him to slip peacefully away . They comforted us and tried to explain what had happened. Thank you OSU vets and staff for being there for all of us. May the Lord bless and keep you as you deal with the trauma of life. Read Less

The emergency fee is high, but the actual veterinary care outside of that is relatively affordable. Read Less

We just moved to Ohio and while walking our dog on a leash around the neighborhood our dog was attacked by another dog who had escaped its yard. I quickly did an emergency vet care search and found Ohio State University Veterinary Hospital. I gave them a call and they were very helpful and calm on the phone. I’ve seen some of the negative reviews talk about this place being expensive, but it is equivalent of a human ER but for your fur baby. Medical emergencies are never cheap but they are saving your loved ones life, you can’t put a price in that. Also, (maybe this is a new change due to the negative $ reviews) but they made it very clear over the phone that upon walking in we would be “charged” $300. $150 is for the walk -in and diagnoses etc and the other $150 will either go towards the price of treatment or you will get it back if it is not needed. Upon our arrival they immediately recognized us from my description on the phone and they met us at the door. My husband filled out the paper work while a vet tech introduced herself to me and Axel (our dog). Through the whole night they kept us updated with our dogs status. We were there from 8pm-3am. The reason it took so long was because they wanted to use the minimum amount of anesthesia to be safe for our pup which I greatly appreciated. (Unfortunately our pup did not want to go to sleep and fought the anesthesia for a long time lol he’s a tough cookie). But once they safely had him sleeping the surgery went pretty quick. Once Axel was starting to wake up he became very panicked so they offered to bring him out to us sooner rather than later so that we could help calm him as he was recovering from the anesthesia. The whole time I felt like the entire staff was very helpful and caring. They even took extra time to help get two small bags of ice for my hand and my husbands hand which were swollen from trying to get the attack dog off of ours. Long story short, if you have a pet emergency I highly recommend Ohio State University Veterinary Hospital. Yes, you will initially be charged $300 upon arrival and depending on how severe your pets injury/illness is they aren’t God so there’s no guarantee, but they will do everything possible to save your fur baby and keep you as comfortable and informed as possible through the whole process! The care, expertise, and communication of the OSU CP clinic is amazing. The clinicians  and students are competent, up to date on best practices in the field, and incredibly understanding and attuned to behavioral issues. The clinician I saw, Dr. Schull, exhibited a vast knowledge in the treatment of anxiety, and was a hoot to boot. In addition to up to date pharmaceutical support, she gave a lot of practical advice in the treatment and training of a high energy working dog. Great reputable clinic. Dropped off a cat in critical condition I found on the road. They took her/him right in and gave me a good samaritan form to complete and that was it. Very caring group but I tried taking my dog in for routine care and since it is a teaching hospital I had to put the brakes on the number of various specialists they recommended coming and checking out my new adoptee. I was thinking merely to establish a vet but by their recommendations I was nearing 1 grand on who needed to assess and what the various procedures would cost. My new dog is an old boy, half blind, very few teeth however he is a happy playful guy. They wanted to scan his eyes with those specialists, clean and fix/pull teeth with the dental peeps, assess bowel function, and on and on and on. I didn't have that much money. Took him to a local classic vet in town for second opinion who scoffed at the price tag I was quoted. My dog wasn't in pain, nothing more could be done with eyes, teeth not causing pain because they're just no longer present. He checked him out thoroughly, cost $54. Wow, so the vet clinic is an institution, great school, people, and intent I'm sure but watch your wallet. It made sense with it being a learning clinic they would really try to get all their students and specialists exposure but man... don't clear people's pocketbooks! Read Less

We first came here after our brand new puppy had recieved emergency treatment for Parvovirus somewhere else to update his shots, as we had made the mistake of trusting a breeder who lied about his age and his vaccination history. They offered free "happy visits" before doing his shots, as he was very uncomfortable with the vet and the vet tech on his initial visit. Unfortunately, this also meant we paid for the initial office visit when nothing was actually done, but it wasnt a big deal. Eventually, Jethro warmed up to the vet tech, Jen, and they accommodated him with a new primary vet when he continued to be afraid of the one we first saw. They usually take good care of my dog, but they charge a lot more than most places. I recently called in after hours because my dog had gotten out of his crate during the day and was vomiting. I was told that he should be brought in, and that there would be a $150 emergency fee just to be seen, and that they would want to do some scans that would cost another $150. There is no reason, in my opinion, for a fee that high or for suggesting expensive tests before even seeing the animal other than to profit off the fears of worried pet owners. Ultimately we decided to watch him overnight before bringing him in, since he was still eating enthusiastically and wasn't lethargic. While we've always recieved adequate care, I was disappointed in this experience and will likely try to find a good vet closer to home who provides good care and doesn't resort to mechanic-like worry tactics to get more money. Here's my complaint--although the OSU clinic has generally done a good job with my dog, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2015 and was treated with chemotherapy, it's clearly a teaching hospital, which means that you are often seen by students rather than vets.  I get it--it's a teaching hospital, and I have patience with that.  But when my dog needed pain pills today, they refused to prescribe them, even though they had copious records dating back two years.  The last time I brought her in was three months ago, when they confirmed that the cancer had returned.  So now, after we have spent literally thousands of dollars for her care, they want me to bring her in again in order to refill a pain medication, despite the fact that she's in pain and regardless of the fact that it'll cost me $100 just to confirm what they already know (she has cancer, she's in pain).  I call bullshit. I want a moderate rating that isnt really here. I've had mixed experiences at  both OSU and MedVet-- some first rate and some bad, and I've spent at least $30,000 to $40,000 at both places combined over the last ten years.  Like MedVet, Columbus's other specialty clinic, OSU is indefensibly overpriced: the cost of specialty veterinary care should be a scandal, as they charge flat fees and human medical specialty fees in a world where insurance doesn't cover bills like it does for human care, and a world where vets know far less than human specialists do. There's no excuse for this -- it's just raw greed. But OSU helped my Maltese live to a ripe old age despite cancer, and I appreciated one faculty member's warning that surgery might not get all the cancer -- it didnt. Treatment can be oversold. On a bad note, my Chocolate Lab had extremely disturbed sleep and was clearly uncomfortable -- for months on end, neurologists kept sending me home with Tramadol when the dog actually had bone cancer that went undetected for a long time. In that case, I spent thousands of dollars on care that did little or nothing for my suffering dog. Again, I've had good and bad experiences at both OSU and Medvet. OSU's new facility is wonderful and people who work there are usually kind and caring -- some exceptionally so.  Being at OSU means interacting with students and that takes time, but faculty always seems to be involved. If my dog had a specialty-vet problem, I'd still go to OSU.  But I resent what OSU and MedVet are part of when it comes to gouging the public.  They know people love their animals and management takes advantage of it -- people exploit the lack of competition, and it doesnt make you feel very good about the decision-makers. We moved to Columbus and decided to go to OSU vet clinic because we assumed that they would be inexpensive and experienced working with a wide variety of clients. We thought wrong. The residents, staff, and vets are nice but their appointment times are inconvenient and they overcharge for services. For example, they recommended preventative dental cleaning for my cat, estimated at$600 not including tooth extractions nor the pre-procedure lab work that needs to be done exactly one week before the cleaning. I couldn't schedule the lab visit because they don't have weekend hours and only have appointments 8-2pm during the work week. Both the cat and dog have to take sedatives before the appointment because the animals are afraid of needles, but even then, they were unable to get necessary labs like heart worm. Their previous vet clinic never had a problem getting labs from the dog and we just have to drop the cat off for any procedures. So I called a private animal hospital in the area and they quoted me $230 for teeth cleaning and labs are free! Both can be done on the same day and I just need to drop the cat off in the morning and get her in the afternoon! So I switched vets for both the cat and the dog. Read Less

So this review only reflects a quick trip here just to pick up some blood. I really didn't have a visit per say. Coming to the OSU Veterinary Medical Center is quite easy if you know your way around OSU if not, Google will be happy to guide you to the right destination. I had to use Google because I never went to OSU, so I don't know my way around campus that well. Once you have reached the destination, you must get your parking validated whether you are here for a visit or like me just a quick pick up. So I got validated to park at the front lot by the entrance to do a quick picker upper. I passed the front doors talked to the front desk staff and they reached the lady who was in charge of the blood bank I was to receive. Christine met me downstairs with the blood in the cooler and it was an easy process. Just paid for the blood and received it in the cooler to give to my vet.The only thing I wish, was I could have checked the amount given because I found out the next day they gave us a high dosage of blood for my puppy so she could only get half of what was given. Next time they will just need to check the dosage and make sure it's the right amount, other than that I have no issue with this place. It's a very nice facility and I'm sure that they take extra care of your four legged loved one. I could see this by just speaking to the staff upfront and seeing how much they really care about these furry friends that come inside each day for special care.I would recommend OSU VMC to anyone that needs special care or blood like me for their four legged loved ones. I am sad to see so many bad reviews here. My dog has been going to OSU for over a year and half since I found out he had cancer and I have had nothing but wonderful experiences. In Feb of 2015, my 10 Year old dog, Coby, was diagnosed with a soft tissue sarcoma. It was surgically removed by my regular vet but did not have good margins so he was referred to OSU for radiation treatment. Coby underwent 18 radiation treatment over 4 weeks and even though he hates the vet and is scared of strangers, he did very well with both the doctors and technicians. They took wonderful care of him and allowed me to do his check ups at my regular vet. I am happy to report that 18 months later, there is no sign of regrowth. However, at one of Coby's usual 3 month check-ups in June of 2016, our regular vet noticed that Coby's lymph nodes were enlarged. They ran a few tests and initially diagnosed it as metastatic cancer from his sarcoma and referred me back to the Oncology department at OSU. Once back there, the doctors suspected that the original tests were incorrect and they were right. To my dismay, I had to pay to repeat the tests but Coby was then correctly diagnosed with lymphoma. His lymphoma is unrelated to his previous cancer. I was devastated but the doctors discussed his prognosis and treatment options with us. They were able to send out a test to determine what type of lymphoma he has and Im so glad we did. Turns out he has T-Zone lymphoma, which has much longer survival times than all the other types! We started chemo right away but he was taken off after just a few weeks because it gave him diarrhea. The doctors have always been extremely concerned with his welfare and talk to me frequently. Coby is now on oral chemo at home and doing very well. I hope to have him for quite awhile yet and we will continue our now monthly appointments at OSu and will be happy to do so.All of my experience has been with the oncology department but I have found the doctors to be extremely knowledgeable, caring, and understanding. They are always willing to spend time talking to me about how hes doing, answer any questions, and discuss treatment options. They always want the best for him. The only real negative things I have to say is that it does get expensive quick (but we all knew that, and really when you look at your invoice, its not that bad, it just adds up), and for oncology you always have to drop off and pick up later. That's annoying to me but not unmanageable. Being a dog groomer I can understand how that works better for them, and they usually have him done in an hour or two. And lastly, you will get many different doctors. This can be hard if you get attached to one but I like pretty much all of them. And that's difficult for me. Young, new doctors are always the most passionate and I guess that's what I like about them. They truly love the animals. Read Less

Let me start by saying that Dr. Millward is amazing. She listens to you and is very compassionate towards your pet. She let's you handle your pet, which means they are in as little discomfort as possible. They are willing to discuss the cost with you and provide you with all options. The only, and what could be a major problem, is that the support staff is not very well trained. They lost my dog's poo sample and made mistake with my billing that I was quick to catch. They usually know very little and sometimes can offer no help. The clinic is usually packed which means you end up spending hours there. The discharge summaries take forever to arrive. The only reason I keep going back is because my dog is comfortable there. Read Less

I took my German shepherd to the OSU clinic twice, once for an emergency after a bite at a dog park and once to the regular clinic for vaccines and a physical. The emergency appointment, besides being the typical vacuum of cash, was fine and Nala was stitched up accordingly. However, her follow up to remove the stitches was a disaster. A medical student attempted the removal after a 30 second consult with the veterinarian. The student botched it, pulling the stitch the wrong way and getting it stuck. It's a teaching hospital, so this was an understandable mistake that I wasn't too upset about. The student did the correct thing and asked for help. Next came 4-5 vet techs plus the veterinarian at staggered times in an attempt to remove this stuck stitch. Eventually, one of them yanked so hard that not only did the stitch come out but the entire wound was peeled open, creating a painful, bloody, and overly stressful situation for my dog. Instead of stitching her back up, which would have required them to sedate the dog a second time (which I would have refused to personally pay for since this was their error), instead they chose to attempt staples... While she was awake. Cornered, with 4 people holding her down, they inserted 7 staples, only 4 of which were located properly since the dog was squirming and trying to get away. Removal of the staples several weeks later was fine and there were no other issues.Next came our clinical visit a few months later. Again, only a 30 second visit with the veterinarian before a student was tasked with immunizing my dog with the typical stuff. She missed at least one of the shots that dribbled down my dog's back thigh. I had to pay for it anyway.Overall, the other times I have called in for help or to schedule appointments there has been a huge emphasis on coming to their emergency clinic instead of regular hours. Their front scheduling staff is incredibly rude and unhelpful in person, but generally decent over the phone. Overall it's all about their bottom line. The emergency clinic charges you $175 which must be paid in full before they will even sit you in an exam room. Any recommended course of treatment will cost additional. I dropped off a stool sample a few weeks ago and was appalled at the number of dogs and individuals in their waiting room and hallway, which explains why there is never any time to answer your questions or to spend examining your dog. They're simply trying to fit as many bodies through to door each day as possible.I transferred to the husband/wife OSU veterinary graduate duo at Northstar Animal Hospital in Upper Arlington (they also have an additional location). They're wonderful, spend as much time with us as necessary, and even called and spent 10 minutes on the phone over Labor Day discussing treatment options going forward. I would recommend them any day over an OSU clinic. So much for a world class veterinary hospital and program. Truly disappointed despite giving multiple reasons to prove to me their value and worth. I was visiting central Ohio and my cat stopped eating, was lethargic and having accidents outside the litter box. I took him to MedVet ER on Wilson Bridge Road. It was a great experience, but after $700 worth of tests-cat needed more tests. I have nothing bad to say about MedVet (I'll leave a separate review on them) but I'm from NYC, and when a human goes to a hospital for something serious-the teaching hospitals are the best. So, I used that thinking when following up at OSU Vet ER when my cat didn't improve. OSU was kind, organized and very, very compassionate. After performing an ultrasound and with the records sent over by MedVet, my cat was diagnosed with Mast Cell Cancer. I was in total shock because he hadn't acted very sick and I've never had a pet get cancer in my 52 years. I was, of course, devastated and flooded with confusion because of my emotional state. The excellent Doctor and student referred me to an Oncologist. Extremely busy, they were able to squeeze my cat in. The Oncologist, Dr. Renaldo, was the smartest, most compassionate and communicative Doctor I've ever met in my life-and I'm including human doctors!!! He spent the time explaining everything I needed to know to make decisions for my beloved cat. He did not judge me or push. These are life and death decisions. We agreed that surgery to remove the diseased spleen and test samples to see how far cancer had spread was the action to take. I also met with Dr. Renaldo and the surgeon the day before surgery. I was treated exactly as if I were the mother of a human child and I could tell that everyone else at OSU Vet treats their patients the same way. They are running the place exactly like a human hospital-but with MUCH NICER PEOPLE. The bill was expensive, but not outrageous for all the tests, exams, ER stay and surgery. The hardest thing with a beloved pet is trying to weigh the money output with what one can afford. It is hell on earth making those decisions. OSU had better prices than other 24-hr. Vet ER's I noticed. Dr. Renaldo and the other doctors made sure different treatment and test options were offered and understood how those costs can add up. They were all patient and gave estimates of the least expensive and possible most expensive costs that could result from my different choices for treatment. Soon I will return to NY City and start my cat on chemotherapy, and I feel very happy with my decisions. Dr. Renaldo even gave me written recommendations for the cancer treatment he would recommend I find in NY. After a week of emotional devastation, I took my cat home from the ER. My mother said on the way out, "What do you think?" And I replied, "If I ever face a terror like cancer I hope I get treated by a doctor as incredible as Dr. Renaldo. And by people as supportive and on the ball as the entire staff at OSU Veterinary Hospital." Read Less

They took a rat bait test and said we would get the results back in 3 to 5 days. It's been 10 days and they state they DONT KNOW if they've gotten the test results back yet bc a different doctor ordered it. We're in the same exact building with the same company?? Don't understand how that's possible. I feel like they've already gotten the results but don't want to inform us so they can run more tests and get more money. At  my last visit my appointment was at 1pm and I was there until 3:30pm. With the amount of money I've spent and the amount of staff they have walking around I would expect things to go a lot faster. Oh and they they surprised us with an additional charge that they "forgot" to add to our last bill. Evening after voicing my concerns, there is no care from them whatsoever. Read Less

I rushed my 2 year old cat to the ER once I discovered that he had a urinary blockage. The staff was nothing but welcoming and kind.Pros: They let me visit him every day that he was in the ER and spent extended periods of time talking to me about his diagnosis and treatment options. Everyone was so nice and helpful.I really believe that he received top-notch care.Cons: It is a little pricey. My cat's catheter insertion, medication (plus additional for the 5 days of mediation he would come home with), and 3 night ER stay was $2000. I was never happier that I had money in savings than when I got the bill. They were supposed to call me twice a day, an AM and PM phone call with updates, but they forgot to do so twice. My cat participated in a study, which was supposed to knock off the $130 ER fee.It was still on the bill when I received it. I made an appointment for my mothers dog a week ago, she drove down from east of Cleveland the morning of the appointment, 2.5 hr drive. She called the hospital to just confirm the time the morning of the appointment. She was told that a computer glitch must have deleted her appointment and they can't put her back in or squeeze her in. She was told that she can come down next Wednesday and drive the 2.5 hours again and miss another day of work and hope that the computer doesn't "glitch" again. Really the woman on the phone didn't care and didn't care to trouble shoot options. We called med vet, it only cost $30 more for an appointment and they got us in no problem. They seem to be accountable, unlike Osu. So no, I don't know how they are with animal care. I didn't heed fellow yelpers concerns regarding the office shortcomings and I fell victim to it too. I do not plan to attempt to come back. If I can't trust them with holding an appointment in a computer then I can't trust them with my dogs care. Read Less

This review is for the Behavioral Medicine Clinic. We adopted our first cat over a year ago. Sweet, mellow, shy, and quiet, she was the perfect cat. In November, we decided to add another to our family. Our cat spent quite a bit of time alone during the day, and we thought it would be good for her to have a friend. We read a ton of articles and searched far and wide for a cat with a similar temperament, and thought we'd found one. He was a young male of the same breed, as we had read was the best fit for an older female, and we brought him home.We followed all of the advice we'd read about introducing two cats to ensure that their interactions would only be good. Over a couple of months, we went through the process of introducing them. Unfortunately, the introductions didn't go well. Our new cat would chase and terrorize our new cat, biting her whenever he got the chance. Our poor sweet girl was terrified of him.We tried EVERYTHING to fix this. Calming collars, calming diffusers, spirit essences, clicker training, getting the new cat fixed, playing with him multiple times a day, etc. Nothing made any sort of a difference. To make matters worse, the new cat cried when he was apart from us, and he also cried when he was behind a closed door. For months, we've slept with him in the bedroom with us, only to be woken up 3-4 times a night by his incessant meowing. He is a sweet cat otherwise, but he clearly has some behavior problems to address.I found the OSU Behavioral Clinic when googling, and decided that we HAD to give it a chance. After all, we'd tried pretty much everything else. The appointment was NOT cheap - $270 for a 2 hour appointment, $130 for every hour after that, $130 for a recheck, $130 for a follow-up appointment... it was going to be super pricey. We actually crowd funded most of it, and scheduled the appointment. That was back in February. The earliest they could get us in was April 2. I faxed the 8 page questionnaire a full month in advance of our appointment, and had our vet fax over their medical records the week of. Every time our cats would fight, or every time our cat would wake us up several times a night, I would think of this appointment and how the end was FINALLY in sight. I rearranged my work schedule to make sure that I could set aside 2-3 hours for this appointment. After we wrangled our cats into their carriers (no easy task), we drove to the clinic. Excited and anxious, we walked in. When we signed in, they said that they couldn't find any information on our appointment. They took us back to a room while they figured it out.We had a couple of people come in and talk to us, and apparently there was some issue with their scheduler and the appointment was double booked. This had happened 3 times as of recent. I'm not sure how it wasn't resolved after the first time that it happened, but apparently it wasn't. They told us that the doctor was booked for the next 3 weeks, but they'd take off $50 if we could come in sometime the next day. We scheduled the appointment for 4-6 on Friday. We had our appointment with the behaviorist. She said that the prognosis wasn't very good for our cats getting along. She worked with us for 3 months, making all kinds of suggestions and telling us different techniques to try. We had email access, so we could contact her and ask any questions about what we were doing. We tried a lot of different things - feeding our cats together at the same time, giving them anti-anxiety medicine, playing with them together. The young cat did stop meowing all night long, which was much appreciated. But the best we could do with the cats was get them to eat together. Any other time, the younger one would stalk, harass, and hurt the older one. We eventually understood that the two cats would probably never get along. In conclusion, it's hard to say what rating I'd give here. I'd rate our first experience a 1. I was very upset that our appointment was so messed up. But every time we went back to pick up a prescription after that seemed much more organized. It was a little frustrating to have to sign in and wait for something like a prescription, but everyone was always nice. As for our behaviorist, she did try and offer some ideas and techniques we hadn't thought of. In the end, though, our cats still didn't end up getting along, which is what we paid so much money for. I would probably recommend the clinic for some less severe behavioral problems, but for problems like ours, no amount of medicine, appointments, or emails can solve them. Read Less

Can I give a No Star review? A negative star? If you love your pets, please, for the love of God or whatever you believe in, do NOT take them there!Monday May 10th our almost 10 year old male doberman was chasing a ball and his foot hits an uneven spot in the yard and he made a sound we had never heard. His leg looked dislocated, or broken, so we carried him on a blanket stretcher to the van and first took him to our vet in Grove city. The Xray showed a nasty break, and suspicious cloudiness on the bone, and it was mentioned that maybe it could be bone cancer that weakened the bone.We were terrified, and willing to do whatever to help him. We were sent to OSU Emergency. After hours of waiting, they sent us home, telling us that they would run some tests within the hour, and that they would call us.First lie. We went home and waited. No call.Next morning, as soon as they opened, we called. We were put on hold. They never picked back up. We tried again. Same thing. Third time someone else answered, re-transferred us to the vet section, where we were told that they were /just/ starting the tests. They told us it would be a few hours to get the results. They told us they would call us. Second Lie!The day dragged on. We had to call them again, and got more juggling around. Ended up sent to voice mail. Left a message. They called t almost 5 pm. Confirmed it was cancer. And cancer tumors were all through him. . We finally decided that after 22 hours in agony and on a morphine drip, it was time to put him down.  We called, got more voice people who claimed not to know the details, telling s they would give the message to staff. With it being a college hospital we started wondering if they were using him for students to practice on. We told them we wanted him put down, and that we were bringing his sister in to see him.We went up there, His leg was swollen grotesquely, and they complained he was acting uncomfortable, not being still. We stared. His leg was broken, with sharp bone shards digging into him, and they said that?!We had brought his sister in to say goodbye to her litter mate, and he was euthanized. Our children took it so very hard.Keeping track of the lies? The next one is coming and it is a whopper. Pay attention. We were told that he would be taken to a local funeral home for cremation, and we stated we wanted to be there when he was cremated. They told us that the funeral home was backed up, so it would be done on Thursday. My husband wanted to take the dog there ourselves, but they would not let us.Thursday comes, we call the funeral home.Guess what? They had no idea what were were talking about when we asked if the cremation was taking place that day. In fact, they had not heard from the hospital.Lie number three! Now my husband is ready to go crazy, thinking they are carving our dog up to show students about dog cancer, or something.  We go up to get the dog. The lady we speak to, she keeps us waiting, while she is on the phone for 15 minutes, talking to God knows who, while glancing at us repeatedly. She tells us that the funeral home was just there to get the dog, that they had called and left a message. Checked the cell. Guess what? NO Call! Lie number four!A PR lady is there, trying to smooth things over, but we are seeing red. This is a part of our family! And this is how the splendid OSU treats people? Please. Please. If you have any alternative, use it. Do NOT use this place. It sickens us all how much suffering he went through, alone. He whimpered the whole time we were there. Know how we knew he was dead? He stopped whimpering. We're heartbroken. Utterly disgusted and sad beyond words. If we would have known it was going to be like this, we would have called the great lady vet on south high street and had her come to our home and put him down where he was surrounded with love, instead of lying there in a place that could care less about his comfort or dignity as a loyal family member. How long would you expect to wait for your dog to have a blood test and an x-ray? One hour? Two hours max? Let me just say that if you're interested in things like: waiting room design and aesthetics, or perhaps, training to be a Westminster judge by evaluating various dog breeds as they trot by you for hours on end, then you will most certainly enjoy taking your dog to Ohio State Veterinary Medical Center on Vernon L. Tharp Street.I entered the clinic at 10 a.m. It was busy, so I expected to wait a little longer than usual. No problem. At noon, the vet came out and told me she had to leave and another vet would be taking over. She said it would be at least another hour.  Wow. Three hours for an x-ray and blood test? I waited. At 1:30 an assistant came out and told me that radiology was "backed up" and that maybe I should go grab lunch. I went to Subway around the corner and returned at 3. I waited. No one came out to speak with me or to tell me what was going on so I went to the  front desk at 3:30 to ask about my dog. The assistant came out again, extremely apologetic and said it would be 20 more minutes. I waited.I checked out with my dog at 5:15. Yes, ladies and gents, I waited 7 HOURS for my dog to have a blood test and X-ray. His fur on one side was wet telling me that he'd probably been stuck in a cage and soiled it and had to be cleaned up. Oh, and the vet casually informed me that further testing would need to be done to really figure out the problem. He also failed to show me the X-ray which had mysteriously taken seven hours to obtain. I was charged $400 for the visit.OSU is a teaching hospital. I understood based on forms that I signed that students may be observing my dog's check-up. That's cool. What is not cool is the time it took for them to conduct and conclude such a simple procedure. I smell a rat. OSU: Did you use my dog all day on Monday, April 28th to train your students? If so, you should be paying me. Bottom line: OSU's focus is on training future vets rather than caring in a prompt manner for the animals that come into the clinic. OSU Veterinary Medical Center, you make me want to root for Michigan. Read Less

The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center

Columbus, Ohio
(51)

Read Less

The vet tech was really nice and the doctor was straightforward with us.

I will not be back with any of my 5 animals. After over $5,000 they still couldn't figure out what was wrong with my cat.

I still need to call and clear that up. Read Less

My baby was having seizures and when he stopped, he suggested i caould take him home with seizure meds. i said no, take bloodwork to see if there was an underlying issue.

Read Less
