"Go broke or kill her."
Imagine a bunny, sick and in distress. You've got a bond with her that nobody else can understand. Her face lights up with joy and rapture when you pet her. Abandoned in a parking lot and sitting in a rescue for a year, watching other bunnies get homes, going to sleep sad every night because nobody wants her.
Then you come along, and you click. She adores you. She's got abandonment issues but you'll never abandon her, never give up on her. She trusts you like no human ever has, trusts you to stay by her side and respect her wishes.
"Go broke or kill her."
Imagine her sick with pneumonia. She struggles for air but being away from *you* - her trusted human, her safe place - sends her into a panic. Again, she's got abandonment issues, but she trusts you. Whatever she's dealing with, she'll be okay as long as you're there.
Then you go to Norton Road Veterinary Hospital. You trust them to understand the both of you, understand that bond, respect *her* wishes, too. You release your bunny into their care and wait to hear what's wrong with her.
But they have a different vet team than you used to work with, and these vets are ice cold. They don't know you and they aren't interested in knowing you. They don't care what you're going through as a family. The only thing they know is that your bunny *isn't* going back home with you. It doesn't matter that she gets worse when she's away from you, that she wilts like a dead flower. It doesn't matter that she perks up when she sees you, a glimmer of hope in her eyes for the first time all day.
"Go broke or kill her."
It doesn't matter that you just moved into your first new house and that everything is falling apart on you. Deanna Fredericks, DVM, won't ask you what's best for your family. She will put things on your bill without asking permission. She will give you two options - take her to MedVet for days of overnight care (which are ruinously expensive) - or euthanize your bunny. Kill the closest thing you have to a child. Watch her eyes, those eyes that never stopped trusting you for a second, close and fade on the table.
"Why can't we just take her home to recover?" you ask. You know your bunny, and that's where she'll get better.
Dr. Fredericks has a look on her face like she was struck in the head with a baseball bat, like that honestly never occurred to her for a single moment.
"I *guess* we could do it that way..." she concedes, but then argues with you about how uncomfortable *she* is with it, how *she* doesn't want that.
Oh, and if you *do* take her, she'll call the Humane Society on you. She will report you for animal abuse - for taking *your* bunny home.
"Go broke or kill her. If you disobey me, I will report you for animal cruelty."
This is the care you will receive at Norton Road Veterinary Hospital. Norton Road's veterinary staff are narcissistic bullies, determined to force their wishes down your throat. Their staff never ask what is possible for you - they simply tack charges on, then send you out the door with threats.
Norton Road - and Dr. Fredericks specifically - are cruel, ruthless, and will not take it lightly if you disobey.
I knew I was dealing with another kind of vet entirely - the kind of vet that would make Tony Soprano take a step back - when the Humane Society showed up at my door today with a demand that I explain myself regarding my rabbits. I've had rabbits for almost fourteen years now and I've never been treated like this in my life.
This is what I got for trusting Norton Road with my family - a Humane Society business card shoved in my door. Now I'm going to have to find a lawyer.
These people are thugs. Stay away from them - especially if you love your pets. Your compassion could get your home invaded, your pets taken from you, even killed.
