While no one ever goes to an emergency vet for good reasons, the team here made my visit as good as it possibly could have been. My new parrotlet was suddenly extremely sick and they took him back immediately and gave my partner and I a room so we wouldn't have to wait in the crowded waiting room. Before the vet spoke with us, a tech came back and informed us that the prognosis wasn't good and that, should we want to, we could leave without seeing the vet herself (who had seen the bird and made the diagnosis) and save $150. Having other birds and wanting to rule out anything I may have done, we opted to see Dr. Kloepfer. She was honest with us and recommended to have Wally euthanized, but was patient and willing to kindly hear out my what ifs and work out what the most likely cause was. They never pushed for us to put him down, but recommended it and it truly seemed like the kindest option. They let us have time to grieve, let us fill out the paperwork and payment in the privacy of the exam room, and gave us a clay imprint of his feet with his name and several feathers free of charge, and were extraordinarily patient with my crying and second guessing. I got Wally back in a well cushioned box and the staff was very gentle and kind.
I think a lot of negative reviews here are a result of owner grief and unrealistic views about pet ownership. Pets ARE expensive and vets have to make a living. They go through years of school, go deep into debt, don't make a huge amount of money, have some of the highest suicide rates, and do it all because they love animals. An emergency vet like this usually doesn't get to see cases with a great outlook, but they still gave you their time, energy, and education- you still need to pay them for their services even if they can't work miracles. The staff was more than sympathetic, and tried to predict the needs of their customers- sometimes I felt like they were giving us perhaps too much time, while others have complained about being rushed.
