I brought my senior indoor-outdoor cat here when he had a shoulder bite and an throat abcess. Wonderful vet; my cat is shy and a bit flighty, but he was surprisingly calm and the vet's gentleness and patience made a huge difference! The tech is also really kind and friendly, patient with my panic over my cat's injury.I like that I get a choice about level of care (how much do I want the vet to look at, and do I want five-star platinum, all-the-tests, etc., just fix the problem as inexpensively as possible, or the middle route)...and I can change my choice depending on the findings. We avoided surgery because the office procedure went fine and home recovery was as expected. I also like the option of being with the cat during examination, it helps us both feel better.And I love, love, love that it's an all-cat clinic. Read Less

Vet did not push unessisary procedures or vaccines, just got him the meds he needed and we were on our way. Fair pricing, did not over charge. Very small and personal cat clinic. They are more caring than the box-vets like MurrayHill Vets or Sorrento Animal Hospital. Here, it's just the vet and his assistant - VERY FAMILY ORIENTED. I have a cat that could not be seen without sedation to get him in the carrier, more to get him out and even more to treat. Accent on cats gave me a HUGE financial discount, knowing this would be an on-going issue with my cat. MOST IMPORTANTLY, the vet diagnosed advanced lung cancer at my first visit here; while at the same time, the vet at Murrayhill vet said it was "just asthma, nothing to worry about, just watch every 3 months". I did not make it to Accent on Cats in time to effectively treat the cancer. Our cat passed peacefully on 1-2-18. However, we have a special needs cat that this vet will continue to treat with all the compassion in the world. Our cat passed on Jan 2, 2018 and the staff at Accent on cats was very very caring throughout these fast short months. If you want inexpensive and very personal/caring vet, this is the place for you. I am a very picky person and if I say this is a cool place, you can bet your bottom dollar it is top-notch. I'm very critical yet this passes me with five stars. The experience that I had here was terrific. Had to cancel several appointments for various reasons, but they didn't give up on me or my cat!! When I did finally make my appointment, I was so impressed with the office staff and their vet, that I cannot think of how better it could have been, except come to my home and get my cat in the carrier, which I found nearly impossible. My cat is awful with vets, and yes, he's awful with Dr. Voelkel, too. We all three manage the best we can. I agree with all the other positive reviews and wanted to add that one thing I really appreciate is how quiet and calm the setting is. Because it's just one vet, there aren't a bunch of scared animals crowding the waiting room. In fact, I think they must space the appointments so that there's never any overlap. It also doesn't smell like most vet offices--dogs, disinfectant, and fear. The tech and the vet were both so nice to us and our rather frightened cat. She's sweet with us but was a complete terror in the exam room and even escaped into the vet's office, where she had a stand off until we could wrangle her back into her carrier. They were really nice and nonjudgmental and just set up a later appointment time when she could be sedated for examination. This vet is very thorough, professional, informative, and friendly. He cares about the cat's health and doesn't want to do any proceedure or anything that would compromise it. That sounds like an obvious thing, but it would be all too easy to do something (like an immunization or something) just because the apt. was already made and you are there, regardless of how the kitty is. I love this cat clinic! We had to board our cats for a day on short notice, and they happily took them in. Our cats had never been boarded so were very scared, but it was such a relief knowing that our cats were with them. My cat are relaxed and curious through exams here, and I don't really think they notice their shots. This is a huge difference from previous experiences for them, and with two of them being over fifteen years old, keeping their stress level at a minimum is very important. The whole staff is so calming and caring, that it is not just my cats who have a good experience, but I can relax and feel confident in the care they get. This is the best doctor I have been able to find in the area for my fur babies. Recently we had an emergency visit with one of our boys and the way the staff here handled follow up was so comforting, that Even after a night of little sleep and high stress for both my cat and myself, the care of the staff made it feel like all the nightmare scare of my cat geting sick was in the past, and all would be better now. I haven't taken my cat in to the vet in years because the last time we did he was furious and tried to tear anything within claws reach. The vet even asked us to leave because they couldn't handle him. Needless to say, I was reluctant to schedule a new appointment at Accent. However, they were super friendly on the phone and reassured me they have experience dealing with cranky cats. I took him in this morning and they did an awesome job! They were very soothing and knew exactly how to handle him. He only growled a couple times, but otherwise remained calm because they knew what they were doing! I bring both my very old cats here and love them. Dr. Vokel and his staff really seem to care about cats. One of my old cats has developed the very bad habit of wanting to pee where she shouldn't. I was so frustrated I wanted to put her to sleep (I know it sounds mean but she's nearly 17 and has had a good life) He was very uncomfortable and wouldn't do that to a cat that is otherwise healthy because he actually cares. I know of other vets who have done that. He has been very helpful in offering other solutions and prices are very reasonable. Other vets I've been to seem burnt out or are all about jacking up the prices of pet health care similar to human healthcare and I just don't agree with that. I accidentally got their address instead of the address of the place down the street from my house that I was looking for, but once I showed up and got their service, I was extremely satisfied with the mix-up. All of the staff is very kind and good at what they do, and you can tell they all really love animals and their work. I no longer live very close to them at all, but I'll keep going to this clinic for as long as I have cats. They don't try to push expensive services, their techniques are great, and they don't even mind it when your nervous cat mauls any limbs. (I'm still sorry about that!) We took our kitten who had a small respiratory infection here and were anticipating our kitten to be very upset and nervous about her first vet visit, but were we surprised! We were the only ones in the office for the whole visit and the staff was SO friendly and welcoming and treated our kitten with such care and gentleness that she never made a single meow of distress! My 15 year old  Bengal cat had not been to a vet since she was a few weeks old.  She hadn't been sick a day in her life, not even a hairball.  Recently she started drinking 3 times the amount of water than normal, so I took her into the Cat Clinic and Dr. Voelkel.  After normal bloodwork and urine test (boy is that fun to collect), and a week of antibiotics, Jade is back to normal.  When I walked in and set Jade's carrier on the floor, the roar she let out startled the Doc, who was talking to another patient's human, so strongly that he thought he's stepped on a cat (there's one that roams around there).  No, just Jade voicing her displeasure at being confined.  Thinking we were in for a battle in the exam room, surprisingly, Dr. Voelkel and his assistant made Jade feel so soothed and comfortable, the exam went off without any throats being torn out.  In fact, it went so "smoothly", Jade should have asked him to buy her dinner first.Bottom line, this is a great atmosphere for a nervous kitty, and everyone that works there demonstrates their love for all the furry felines.  Highly recommended. My husband and I recently adopted a cat from the humane society and the poor thing had an abscess on his neck. I was worried about taking him back to the humane society to get checked up because he was so scared when he was there. I am so incredibly happy that I took him to accent on cats! Pazu (our cat) was so calm while in their care. They were so gentle and reassuring to him. He did not make a single noise as they checked his neck, teeth and temperature. Turns out he had a slight fever, 2 abscesses, gingivitis and tape worm. Haha my goodness! They took such good care of my Pazu and I will never go anywhere else! I'm really glad I found this place!  The entire office is calm and relaxing, from the vet himself and his asst. to the soft music playing.  They're not rushed, and are very kind to the cats, and they seem to tailor their approach to what they know about an owner's perspective, which impressed me.  It seems like everyone from people with "fur babies" to people whose cats are simply a nice addition to their family would be equally well-served by this office.  I really appreciated the multi-faceted advice I received about my cats, who began fighting more recently.  Also, their charges seem quite reasonable.I've seen many vets over the years, and I'm impressed.  I highly recommend them! Of all the clinics I've ever been to, this one is for sure at the top! I took my kitty Starbuck to get her eye looked at because it was infected, the second I walked in we were greeted by the sweetest lady, we finished the paperwork and the doctor came out to take us back, and fist off, this place is BEAUTIFUL, has such a home feel, no hard floors, it was carpeted, and nothing was all white like the hospital feel of all typical clinics. There were NO doors to the rooms, it was all so welcoming. And best of all, my kitty seemed very content and even happy! I could see it in the doctors eyes, how much he truly cares for his patients. Our regular vet wasn't available over the 4-day Fourth of July long weekend/holiday. We located The Cat Clinic on line and an appointment was made for that afternoon (July 5). Our almost 20-year-old kitty, Mozart, was fading fast and we knew it was time to enable his transition. When we arrived, the clinic was empty except for the vet, his assistant/receptionist and the clinic cat. Beautiful classical music was everywhere. The clinic itself is light, open and spotless. Once they had us sign an authorization for them to euthanize Mozart they suggested we pay first so that wouldn't interfere with with us as we were leaving. Both men were warm, caring and very gentle with my husband, Mozart and me. The vet talked us through the whole process and asked which parts of the process we wanted to be part of.  Having talked with several friends who have been through this process, we knew ahead of time exactly what we wanted.  The whole thing went smooth as silk. Once Mozart had received the anesthesia we held him until he lost consciousness. Then the vet came in, shaved a tiny place on the inside of his back leg and administered the drug to euthanize him. As we petted him, through our tears, he made his transition. He was totally at peace.   We wanted to write this review to thank the two angels at The Cat Clinic and to let anyone searching for the right place to consider this compassionate place. Brought our cat here after a friend recommended them. I liked our other vet, but sometimes couldn't get in during an emergency or had to settle for a vet I didn't care for. He makes follow-up calls and goes above and beyond the level of care I have seen in any previous vet. It is unfortunate that the vet who worked from the location previous to him has gotten terrible reviews, because people might not know that there is a new Dr. there and he's GREAT! We found him through our favorite employee at Healthy Pet (another great place for animals), because that is where she takes her cat. I can't say enough good things about this business. I was taking my three cats to Barbur Veterinary Hospital and although I love Dr. Ewing, my family was very disappointed with their customer service/receptionists, so I started looking elsewhere. I found the Cat Clinic online, but was a little worried about the older reviews- turns out, those reviews are for the previous owner of the clinic, who was apparently quite pushy. I was so happy with our visit to the Cat Clinic. I brought 2 out of the 3 cats for vaccinations and bloodwork. The office is very nice with a vaulted ceiling and exam rooms that are more like tall cubicles (not enclosed rooms), which I really enjoyed. The space was nice and open and you actually had room to put your cat carrier somewhere other than shoving it under your chair. The receptionist is also the CVT and she was so kind. She was very friendly and helpful, carrying the cat carrier for me. I also brought along my 13 month old little girl, so it was a large traveling circus! Dr. Voelkel is very easy going, explains things in simple terms and has a very gentle way with the cats. He was not at all pushy and patiently explained the answers to all of my quesitons. They even took the time to greet and play with my little girl. Their prices are reasonable, which was great plus. I think it was a great move to switch our cats to the Cat Clinic. They made us feel so welcome and it was just a great office visit (despite the two cats and rambunctious baby)! Give them a chance- you will be so impressed. Read Less

I have a fairly mean cat who doesn't like most people, and after all my warnings to Dr. Voelkel about wearing protective gear, he had her almost purring on the first visit. He is truly gifted with cats, and his kindness and compassion coupled with a serene environment make this clinic a low-stress experience for animals and their people. I really appreciate his reluctance to spend money on invasive tests or harsh medications without trying home remedies first. I will never take my cat anywhere else - I highly recommend this clinic! There should be more than 3 stars for this vet! We took our cat here after lengthy visits to different clinics around town, she had health problems and wasn't losing weight despite the advice of other vets. After the first visit to Dr. Voelkel, all our questions about her health were answered, and we started our cat on a diet that has slimmed her down to a more reasonable size! She's a much happier kitty. A previous vet had suggested an expensive blood test to determine if she had a thyroid disorder. Dr. Voelkel hesitated, saying the condition was unlikely in a cat like ours and that he wanted to try other, less expensive things first. As it turned out, he was right, and the cat was left with a much less intrusive test. Dr. Voelkel also called after to check up, and to make sure we didn't have any more questions or concerns. If I'm ever curious about something my cat is going through, or the treatment, they're ready with thorough explanations and answers, above and beyond the usual for a vet's explanations. Dr. Voelkel and his staff are always willing to take the time to explain things, in person or over the phone. Both Dr. Voelkel and his assistants have shown extreme finesse with calming a very agitated cat (and she isn't shy with the claws). I've also taken to buying anti-flea and other cat care stuff here, to my surprise they were often less expensive than pet stores. Dr. Voelkel is just the BEST. We've had a severly diabetic cat over the last 4 years that required daily insulin, close monitoring and frequent checkups. Recently she suffered a major medical issue that after 2 weeks of intensive testing and monitoring, had to be put to sleep. Dr. Voelkel & his staff were EXTREMELY thorough in their treatment and handling of our kitty, exhausting all possibilities for therapy to make her more comfortable. We have several other cats and there isn't anyone we trust more for their physical well-being & health than Dr. Voelkel. He's the most honest, compassionate Vet we've ever met when ""the"" decision needs to be made, as well. JMHO, but this guy is tops. Read Less

I decided to make a change ONLY because I thought the enviorment would be better for my cat since we would be making a lot of trips, (the dogs and the craziness at the other office stressed him out). I made it clear to Volekel that I loved my other Vet and my intentions were to just have a calmer enviorment. My cat started to show signs of becoming sick again. and I was getting really worried about him. Everytime I went in, Voelkel was just focused on the IBD, and didn't seem too concered. I felt I was the one recommending this test and that test to rule out other reasons for his severe diarreha, vomiting and illness. I asked for a fecal, x rays, and bloodwork. He ruled out anything other than IBD and focused on diet with me. When the problems were getting worse he seemed overwhelmed and called many other DR.s for insight... even referring us to a Specialist all the was in Clackamas, who didn't help at all. When we finally came to our senses that we needed to go back toour other DR, our cat was very very sick. Our other Dr. was confused why Dr. Voelkel would call every other internist in the area and not even call him when he knew our cats illness the best. In the end our cat had severe parasites that turned into Pancrities that killed him. I feel so guilty that I trused Dr. Voelkel with his life. I wrote him a letter asking for a explanation of why he charged us for test that didnt rule out anything he had, and he didn't have the nerve to write me back. No, I'm, sorry for your loss, or anything. He puts on a show like he cares,( walking your cat carrier out to your car, ext)... but he obviously doesn't. After adopting our newest family member from the Oregon Humane Society last weekend, our next step was to find a vet that specializes in cats, close to our home in SW Portland. I found Accent on Cats and recalled driving past their bright yellow sign on BH Hwy. I read a lot of reviews and concluded that all of the new ones (since new ownership) were positive, so I made an appointment. I highly recommend these folks! I was impressed by them from the first phone call through the appointment. Very personable folks, the staff was warm and efficient and the Dr. Voelkel was excellent; both professional and personable. We made our first visit to Accent on Cats this week after trying to make a priority appointment with our usual veterinary clinic. One of our cats seemed to need immediate care. Though we could have taken her to the usual vet the same day, it would have been almost 8 hours before she could be seen. So, we drove across town (a 22-mile round trip) because we’d heard good things about Dr. Voelkel’s clinic and he was able to see her right away. Dr. Voelkel was able to determine our kitty’s problem very quickly. Both he and his assistant impressed me very much with their professionalism, and particularly with their gentle and skillful handling of a cat who has been infamously difficult in other hands – a real terror! Dr. Voelkel gave me a thorough and understandable explanation of his diagnosis and treatment, and clear instructions for care at home and follow-up. In spite of the longer trip to the doctor, this very touchy kitty recovered much more quickly than usual from the experience. Two days afterward her condition has noticeably improved and she is no longer in pain. I am very happy with all aspects of her care at Accent on Cats. For once I do not dread our next visit to the vet with this kitty, and it will definitely be to Dr. Voelkel’s clinic. Read Less

Wonderful new cat veternarian/clinic. Please don't confuse this clinic (Accent on Cats) with the former Cat Clinic. I took my cat Shadow in for all his vaccinations and a comprehensive initial exam. He hadn't been feeling at all well. The doctor was very thorough, caring, informative and tremendously knowledgeable. He found no cause for alarm and no evidence of any serious illness and so decided to go ahead with the vaccinations. When I acquired the practice, I assumed the previous clinic's reviews could be removed, so that only those reviews actually pertaining to the new business would be displayed. I took my cat in to be looked at for a cold he was sneezing all the time. They immed. put an iv in his juggular and then began vaccinating him 13 times. Couldnt even name the vaccinations when I asked. Why would they be vaccinating a sick animal?? His leg was as hard as plastic when I finally took him out of there against their orders. The office mgr said "" your cat is very sick and is going to die"" which normally I would never yank a cat out of the place he was being treated but could tell something was seriously wrong. When I picked him up and paid the 750.00 vet billl that was racked up with all the vaccinations in a little over 24 hrs. He was close to death. And the only way I could get him out was to promise to bring him back for more shots (antibiotics) which they would not give me to administer myself. I brought him home and never brought him back to that place of death. Here we are 2.5 years later and he is fine. With NO help or aftercare from that nightmare of a vet clinic. Somebody should see these people are forced to close this clinic. I just wonder how many animals did give up and die while under their care. And how many hundreds of thousands of dollars they have made preying on animal owners that put their trust in these crooks. There is a special place in hell for people like the office manager there. I would be happy to join forces with anyother that has had an experience like mine to see that no other animmals are treated like the way the Beaverton Cat Clinic treated my cat. Read Less

We went over there a couple of weeks ago to get Monty his annual shots. It was our first visit there. We got the lecture about dental care. Got the shots. Didn't do the fecal sample thing (no need to). The vet tried to talk us into getting a few hundred dollars worth of tests. No thanks. He got a few of his facts wrong about the history of immunology. They kept our original records and gave us copies. We weren't impressed. A few days ago, Monty became really listless. He still won't eat much. Sleeps all the time (this is a normally very active cat). We think it was the shots or something else from that clinic that made him sick. Monty hasn't been sick a day in his life. Until now. We are very depressed over this. We certainly don't plan to take Monty back for a ""cure."" Read Less

Went in for an infection and was charged and EXTREME amount of money. He made me feel like a bad "parent" and that I do everything wrong and do not take care of my cat. Charged for one minute of an examination and for the infection to be cleaned (that took about five minutes). Was also charged the next day when I had to take my cat back again to be re-examined. I thought it was just me who felt like a horrible person going to this guy. Don't go there. I went once a few years ago, and then again this passed week. The vet took out a dental implement and scraped my cat's teeth while he basically made me feel like a bad person because of the plaque my cat had. Only now, my cat has an infection in his mouth. And to top things off, when I went in to get my deposit back (I had left one for further testing) he came out to try to talk me out of going to another vet and getting my money back, and I smelled alcohol. A strong scent of alcohol at 4 in the afternoon. Maybe he's diabetic and that's why he smelled that way, but I really wouldn't risk my cat's health to give this guy the benefit of the doubt. I should have read the other reviews before picking this ""cat doctor"". My wallet is almost $800 lighter thanks to 2 days of ""care"" at his clinic. As others have said, he recommends multiple tests and overnight boarding almost before a diagnosis is made. I wish I'd paid attention to my intuition and walked away from this clinic quickly, especially when I noticed that the place was suspiciously devoid of other customers. Read Less
