They have ALL the equipment and the prelim by students is excellent, but the actual diagnosis and treatment plan is done by a senior students or residents on exchange and is inconsistent and sometimes wrong. I spent 3 grand to get my service dog on antibiotics and a month later they realise it is the wrong antibiotic --100 bucks and a month wasted making a cure even harder. I don't recommend them unless you have an exotic problem and a lot of money. They are more expensive than your local vet and unpredictable in their medical practice Read Less

In a very difficult situation, OSU Vet Hospital provided professional and experienced care for my critically ill horse. They kept me informed along the way, allowing me to be part of the decision making process. They allowed me to be with my horse before she went to surgery. They compassionately gave me the bad news post operatively, providing me reasonable alternatives for bringing my horse home after she died in recovery. Read Less

Again OSU vet clinic never ceases to amaze. Great vets, but their billing department and appts reaches levels of insanity that I have never seen before. They charged me over $1000 more than the estimate for after-surgery care. They gave me an appt with an intern when I specifically made an appointment with a specialist. They billed me two months after an appointment that I had already paid for. You cannot dispute any billings. They are a state institution, failure to pay can result in having your tax refunds withheld or jail time. Good vets, but be warned that they are blood sucking vampires and will take you for every cent you have. Read Less

I had the unfortunate event of needing to rush my 2 year old Pug to OSU vet hospital. While the visit cost me thousands of dollars the doctor's and nurse's taking care of my baby were phenomenal. This place has the top of the line equipment, specialist on the floor to provide the best possible care for their animal patients. My doctor, yes the doctor not the nurse called me numerous times throughout the day to give me updates about my dog and make sure I was aware of possible risks of the next step of treatments. I never felt more comfortable leaving my dog with a vet then I have leaving her with OSU. I called after hours and was able to check the status of my pugs, condition and never felt like I was bothering them and never once did I feel like they sugar coated the situation and were very respectful of my wishes. 100% only hospital I would take my animals for an emergency Read Less

My dog was evaluated at the OSU small animal hospital in April 2012.  He was referred for imaging to rule out pericardial effusion (fluid around the heart) related to an earlier incident.  I had explained to everyone at the hospital that the symptoms had a few similarities to the previous incident, but were definitely not identical.  My dog would flinch if his sides were pressed.  Nothing was found from OSU's evaluation of his heart/heart sack.  Although other imaging was being performed no evaluation was done, or even suggested for his spleen / abdomen / liver and my comments were apparently ignored.  I was told by OSU that they didn't see anything wrong with his heart and that I could take him home.  A day and a half later, he was rushed to a vet hospital in Portland because one or more of the tumors in his LIVER had bled out, releasing massive amounts of blood into his abdomen (a larger scale of the event that I had initially brought him to the OSU vet hospital for).  He almost died that day, but his spleen and half of his liver were removed successfully by the wonderful surgeon up in Portland.  Through working with an oncologist and continued veterinary care, I was lucky enough to have six more months with my beloved dog.  OSU vet hospital is awful on so many levels.  Because it is a teaching hospital, you need to drop your pet off in the morning so everyone can learn from it over the course of the entire day.  If you have a full day to kill and you know that all your pet needs is a flea collar, this might the right place for you.  Otherwise I recommend avoiding it at all cost.  If you love your pet and it needs special care, it is well worth the drive to Portland (and probably less time consuming).. We have the best vet in Eugene, Ron Titterington at Emerald Valley Pet Medical Center, but even his extensive clinic  does not have the diagnostic tools or the specialists for something like open heart surgery. So when our cat Lucky, our baby, needed a more detailed diagnosis and potential life-saving surgery, our vet helped us set up an appointment at Oregon State University's Veterinary Teaching Hospital. We drove up to Corvallis where we met with Dr. Sisson and his team. They listened to our story, looked at the documents they'd received, and explained to us what they thought was going on with Lucky, which was perhaps not what we'd expected. We left him in their capable hands for a few hours and went out for lunch. When we came back they had the diagnosis ready. Dr Sisson took us into his lab and showed us all the images/videos they'd taken of Lucky's heart, and explained what they had already done for Lucky, who by this time was looking much better. Unfortunately, the diagnosis was what we didn't want to hear, a worst case scenario among possible heart conditions. Lucky won't live and nobody could operate on him, even humans with this condition are inoperable.Despite the bad news, the team was very supportive, kind, and respectful. They listened to us, took all the time we needed to explain everything, and gave us extensive advice for a treatment plan to help extend his life for as long as possible without pain. I really felt that the team took us seriously, they did not talk down to us. It helped that we'd done quite a bit of research, and as an academic I'm used to going through academic articles and dealing with people who have a tendency to speak in a highly technical manner. I do think that this may be a little challenging for clients who just stepped into the clinic and haven't had the time yet to research their pet's condition and so won't recognize the terms. As for me, I appreciate the honesty, and it was good to have exact conditions explained to me rather than having to listen to vague metaphors. Overall we were very pleased with the service here. If you have a pet with an uncommon condition, and you want one of the best, specialized veterinarians in the state to work the pet's case, then this is the place to go. They have all the equipment in house so you will get the most accurate answers and you will get them fast. The vet techs are all veterinary medicine students, which means they're, overall, probably better informed/educated than your normal vet tech, though of course you may run into the occasional brand new student. Despite the bad news, I am grateful that our cat's case could help, in some small way, to contribute to these students' education, so that they will be better prepared if they ever get a similar case in their own clinic. Our thanks go out to Dr. Sisson and his team, who are currently working with our own vet in Eugene to monitor Lucky's treatment, so that he may have a few more months or even a few years to live!
