I have taken our guinea pigs here twice. I feel the front office staff could be a little bit more welcoming and the support staff could be more knowledgeable, therefore I have given only 4 stars. I do really like Dr. Surrency. She is very personable, compassionate and knowledgeable. She even gave our piggies kisses! Besides her obvious affection and care for our pets, she also interacts really well with my children. Their visit charges are comparable to other clinics in our area. As far as their location, it is easy to get to if coming from the west side of Hillsboro. I would appreciate it if parking were better accessed and demarcated. When we have to hand carry our little family members, I don't want to have to trek a block to the clinic. The two times we were there, I felt like I was maybe parking in a neighboring business' lot, but it wasn't clearly defined. I do like the clinic and Creamer and Swirl will continue to get their care there. Read Less

We've recently been lucky to become the owners of a rescue rabbit.  We've been pet less for close to 18 years when our beloved cat died.  But our little girl came into our lives at the right time.  She's been enlightening our lives for over 6 months and we figured we should get her to a doctor to make sure we were doing it right, and to make sure she was healthy for many years to come. To be honest, we came to Hillsboro Veterinary Clinic because it was the closest clinic that would arrange for a visit with a rabbit.  As it turns out, we couldn't have made a better choice. The desk staff was very helpful.  We had to reschedule an postpone a couple times due to the severe weather, but they even helped when we needed directions on the phone to get there.  Dr. Surrency was friendly, and knowledgeable.  She handled our little girl with confidence and I could tell our bunny wasn't nervous at all.  Dr. Surrency gave us the knowledge we needed to care for our bunny and we left the place feeling very comfortable about how we have been taken care of her, how we will care for her in the future and most importantly, that our SHE was actually a HE.  :)  Yes, that was the best shock.  Not only was our visit a great experience, but we were surprised by a handwritten card in the mail yesterday.  That really touched us because we've never had a doctor go that extra mile to let us know our business was appreciated.  Thank you to everyone at Hillsboro Veterinary Clinic for helping us make our decision to keep this little guy and for making sure he's as healthy as he is cute. Every time I think of this place, I am filled with regret. After doing some research, I found this place to be overpriced with a staff that was rude. I stayed with hillsboro vet throughout the entire initial vaccination for my pet because the doctor was very informative and trustworthy. What eventually turned me off to the point I didn't want to ever go back was how I was treated by a nurse technician named Stacy. She tried to pick a fight with me over something I believed to be trivial and I couldn't trust anything they did to be of importance afterwards. Lastly, they ended up charging me for a unnecessary fecal sample in advance which proved they were trying to squeeze every dime out of me. This place gave me a heavier financial toll than what I was expecting with a service that did not match their prices. Read Less

I'll begin with "I was naughty". I hadn't brought my cats into the vet yet, and it had been 2 years since I got them. So anyhow, the red flags began when I called. My cat was sick and causing me concern so I found the closest vet and called; Hillsboro Veterinary Clinic. The lady who answered seemed impatient and rushed through our conversation. She later apologized as it caused her to miss important information for the service needed and costs. It sort of frustrated me, but she apologized. I then scheduled for later that day. Yay! ...And honestly I was thinking "whatever, so I don't click with the receptionist". So I show up early cause I wasn't sure what to expect; paperwork and all, I don't know. The receptionist was very nice. Huh. Oh whoops, the lady I spoke to was maybe the 'vet tech'? (I'm sorry, I'm not sure what the title is.) We get checked in nicely. Our exam went ok. It turned out it was the lady I spoke to on the phone. The words she spoke were not unkind, but the manner in which she spoke them almost seemed it. I could get use to it. She seemed nice enough to me and seemed to genuinely love the animals. The vet was really nice but when I asked about if they possibly had coupons, as my boyfriend said their website said to call for a coupon, she somewhat squirmed and said I hadn't followed 'the proper procedures' required to get the coupon. What?!!? Ok, again whatever, I'll get over it. Lesson learned. Next time I'll spend more time researching how to schedule properly so as to get any discounts available. (I'll get use to technology eventually) I'm at checkout now and the receptionist says it will be about $177. I say oh I don't think that's right I was told $206 something. (This becomes relevant later, sort of) she talks with the other gal and then corrects the price to the $206... fast forward to the following day. I'm back again with my other two animals. I know, ugh. But I love them. We get a bunch of stuff done. The appointment went great. The first lady was growing on me. The vet was nice. They showed me the bill in the office it came to $215 something. Ouch but ok. So, I go to check out, a younger receptionist rings me up 250 something. What? I say I'm sorry but this seems wrong compared to this paperwork. Maybe it's just me but I think something is wrong here. She responds quickly, it's just you. Really??!? Maybe, let me check it for you or something equal would be a good response .... but, it's just you. But wait, upon a closer look it was a mistake on their end. She almost corrects it; she still messed up the charge for a rabies shot but by now I had been there 2 hours so close enough. I end up getting out at $222 something. Does she say sorry.... anything? No. And that's when I got upset. By the time I was driving home I was practically in tears I was so upset. To be fair, I was hungry. I ate. I was still upset. I don't think there will be a third visit. It's a shame because the vet did seem nice. But, I don't pay over $400 to be treated with such disrespect. I'll go elsewhere. Read Less

This clinic is really disappointing. The front staff and the vet techs are very nice, but the vets are rude, uncaring and pretty much into taking as much money off of you as they can, not the best interest of your dog. My husband and I are both blind and have guide dogs from the Guide Dog Foundation in New York. Dr. Healy always acts like she is uncomfortable talking to us, I don't know if she is uncomfortable around blind people or if that is how she is with everyone, but I kind of felt like she could barely hold back the disdain, although we have always tried to be polite to her. We have certain questions that the Guide Dog Foundation expects us to ask and certain things to look for in a vet. All animals are important, of course, but it took $60,000 (paid by generous donors) to train each of our guide/handler teams, and our dogs need to be in top shape and also are out in the world all the time, exposed to many other dogs and whatever lives on the floor of the MAX, etc. She doesn't seem to have any regard for this other than pushing unnecessary medications/procedures/etc and get the maximum profit out of us. These dogs are our second set of guide dogs each and we have also had pet cats. I have never been treated so rudely and with such disregard. We will not be returning. I tried a new vet due to location, but we will be going back to Rock Creek which has always been good to us and our animals and always are polite, flexible and have our dogs best interest at heart rather than profit. I can't say the same for the vets at Hillsboro Veterinary Clinic. Read Less

With myself and several household family members allergic to either dogs, cats or birds, our pet choices were pretty narrow.  So we settled on pet rats. For the past four years, our rats have been fantastic pets, but, like any living creature they come with veterinary needs. The problem with rats is that there are very few vets in the Portland area who are truly experienced with them.  Sure, there's "exotic vet" places, but oddly most "exotic" vets don't seem to have a lot of rat-specific experience or knowledge, beyond what they learned from textbooks in veterinary school.Enter Hillsboro Veterinary Clinic.Last spring, Dr. Melinda Surrency joined the group.  We have found Dr. Surrency to be one of the most experienced vets we've ever met, and she has a widely-known reputation in the Pacific Northwest as being a leader in her field with regard to rat care and treatment.  And, she has pet rats of her own, so the learning never stops. With as many as 7 rats at a time, we've been into the clinic probably twenty times in the past year, even more if you count stops for various routine medications.  In every case, we've been treated very well, with masterful pet care, and the prices are not too bad (lower than a clinic in Beaverton we'd previously used).  Vet Tech Bo and Assistant Michael are fantastic, caring, and interestingly enough, have pet rats themselves. We've been completely happy with Hillsboro Vet, and plan to use them for as long as we still have pets. We took our dog here for years. After his last visit, we will never go again. I've never been so horrified, disappointed, and mad. They traumatized my senior dog, needless painful tests, alot of money. And my poor dog went home still in pain. They demanded more money before they fixed his problem. We paid more than half and refused to bill us for the rest. Terrible place and more expensive than most other vets. Don't go!!! Read Less

I have been taking my Siberian husky Luke for his care here for five years. He is shy with strangers. The staff is wonderful with him. The first time he met Dr. Diane Healey. He sat up puffed his chest out and started flirting with her... lol. He fell in love with her at first sight. She is wonderful with him. They provide excellent care not only for their patients but for upset fur momma's as well is very sick with a virus right now and I'm very worried. Stacy one of the vet techs has been calling to check on us. As well as Dr. Healey. I highly recommend them to anyone who is looking for a great care provider for your furniture child. Read Less

I am a regular of the clinic. Meaning, I am there sometimes as often as once a week. I have a house full of animals, most of which are exotics. So, we see Dr. Surrency exclusively. All of my animals adore her and so do I. She's caring, compassionate and has small animals herself, so she has owner experience as well as medical. This goes a long way with pets like Rats and Guinea pigs. :-). The vet techs: Bo, Sierra and Stephanie know me well and are always wonderful to me and my beloved pets. I drive from North Portland out to Hillsboro (usually in rush hour traffic, which sucks!) but it's well worth the trip. Read Less

Dr. Surrency and her vet assistant Erin were incredible. They were so kind and helpful. Dr. Surrency is very knowledgeable and compassionate, and she worked within my budget to provide the best care for my pet fancy Ranchu goldfish. She didn't treat my pet with any less respect and kindness than she would treat a dog or cat. I am so grateful to her and her team for staying late to ensure my pet had the best chance. She even demonstrated how I will need to perform injections for my pet. Hillsboro Veterinary Clinic exceeded all my expectations. Thank you!
