Best Friends Veterinary Medical Center

Dr. Walker seemed just fine but I was displeased by the "hard-sell" I experienced from her staff. I came in only for check-ups for my dogs and just to get up to date on vaccinations. My first issue was I was asked to bring a fecal sample for analysis but I was not told that there would be a $49.99 charge for fecal analyses. I feel they could have been more upfront about that and it would then give customers a chance to consent to this. My next issue was the hard, emotional sell that the vet tech (didn't catch her name) was giving me about not opting in to special programs that seemed totally unnecessary. I was made to feel like I neglect my dogs' health because I won't do the "Senior Wellness Program" which was a $275 service consisting of vitamins and check-ups. First of all, I have religiously taken my pets to veterinarians and this is the first time I've heard of such a thing and also this is the first time I felt like I was trying to be convinced this frills were necessary. The vet tech said she wished I would reconsider my choice not to do all of the services named below (other than the check ups, vaccines, fecal analyses). I was told that my use of OTC flea/tick/etc protection won't cut it. To be honest, this was completely ridiculous to ask such a sum and insist on all of these things. And this comes from a dog owner whom has studied dog nutrition, makes her own dog food & mixes supplements to add into it, trains her dogs every day and monitors health closely. I don't think I would ever be considered neglectful of my dogs' health & happiness but yet I was made to feel that way by the vet tech and her patronizing talk. Check-ups and vaccines and the fecal analysis (50/each dog) = 264 Senior Wellness Program = 275 * 2 dogs= 550 Dental Cleaning = 650-950 (range, let's say 650 to keep it on the low end to play devil's advocate) * 2 dogs= 1300 Parasite preventative medications = 276 (138/6 month supply of Trifexa) * 2 dogs = 552 TOTAL ESTIMATE = 2,666. All I came in for was check-ups and vaccinations. I definitely would not make Dr. Walker my veterinarian because of the apparent policy of pressuring me to buy more and more. Read Less

It makes me sad that a vet would try to take advantage of people when their animal is sick. We took our cat here because he was not eating for 2 days and without doing and tests she said it was most likely cancer then she proceeded to give us a list of tests she would need to do which would come to $1500. My husband and I decided to take our cat to DoveLewis which only cost us $515 which included ER exam, labs, ultrasound and hydration and our cat is back to his happy self. Additionally Best Friends Vet double vaccinated both of our cats last year which could have harmed them. My husband and I had previously taken our cats to Full Circle vet in Lake Oswego which we absolutely loved but due to convenience of its location we tried Best Friends Vet which was a mistake. This clinic was very close to where I live so I decided to take my kittens here for their vaccinations. I was extremely displeased that at my first initial appointment it took about 45 minutes past my scheduled time to even see the vet. I finally was seen after asking the woman at the front desk if I needed to come back and reschedule. When I took the kittens back for their following vaccination appointment, I overheard the vet while I was waiting talking badly about me and how I was "fussy" about having to wait. I also heard them talking badly about other customers behind their very thin walls. Not only that, but the prices at this clinic are extremely expensive and overpriced. I have had animals my whole life and have never felt so uneasy about a veterinary clinic. I was horribly disappointed to say the least. Read Less

My pup and I love Dr. Walker and her staff. So much so, that my pup always tries to go in to say hello when we pass the clinic on our walks. My little guy has been seeing Dr. Walker regularly since he was 10-weeks old and has always received the best of care from her and her staff. I've never been to a more caring, attentive vets office before. I have a timid dog who is terrified of the vet. We recently moved here and Best Friends is where I decided to go, and I'm so happy I did. The doctor and nurses were all wonderful. They listened to my concerns and worked with me to make sure my dog was as comfortable as possible. They clearly know what they are doing and care enough to accommodate special needs. She referred us to a surgeon for our pup's ACL and was an amazing support through this whole process. You can tell she really cares about who is at the center of her practice and puts the animal's wellbeing above everything else. I will never go here again nor will I ever recommend the place to friends or family. I called seeking a checkup for my 8 month old kitten and when speaking to the vet gave very clear descriptions of his recent behavior. He has not been lethargic, or lacking appetite in any way and generally seems healthy and happy. Despite all of this and despite my warning that I'm a very poor college student literally living paycheck to paycheck she ordered $585.84 of "STAT' tests that could have OBVIOUSLY waited a day for results, in addition to keeping him for 5 hours, long until after they had closed. Apparently they were doing an explorative surgery on another client's pet and saw an opportunity to get more money from me. She made up a story about how he could die of kidney failure in 24 hours in order to scare me into getting the tests done. Ultimately all they did was give him an enema to help him poop-- for $600. Dr. Walker and her staff are extremely dedicated to keeping their patients healthy. They take time to explain things to you and answer your questions, even when they are swamped. Our dog had a tooth abscess on a Friday and was seen in clinic and worked into the operating schedule that same day (saving us an expensive trip to urgent care). I felt completely comfortable leaving my sick dog with them all day because I knew they would take good care of her. The entire staff stayed late and made sure that she got the care that she needed. Dr. Walker called and checked in on us the next morning. I have been to other vets before that make you feel bad for asking questions or charge you a lot without explaining things to you. My experience at Best Friends Dog Clinic has been the complete opposite of that and I would recommend them to any of my friends or family looking for a reliable and caring vet for their dog. I had high hopes for this place. They were even kind enough to send a "welcome to the neighborhood" postcard advertising a Free New Client Checkup. However, when my wife took our short hair domestic cat in for this checkup they put the pressure on to run all kinds of extra tests and give our cat x-rays which were completely unnecessary. They said the tests would cost $700. When my wife said, "No" they pressured her to open a credit card with them and said the tests shouldn't wait over the weekend. This recommendation for extra tests came because my wife told them we switched our cat's food and the cat didn't like it so the she wasn't eating as much. They said this was enough indication that our cat may be experiencing a blockage. Our cat is picky, I didn't need to go to veterinary school to figure that one out. Our cat is picky so they automatically went all doomsday on us and wanted to do xrays. THIS MAKES ZERO SENSE. Our cat is showing no sign of being in stress. She is eating her food regularly when we put tuna juice on it, drinking regularly, and going to the bathroom regularly. She showed no signs of abdominal pain either. Our cat is perfectly fine. We switched her back to the food she likes and everything is solved. Oh and that "FREE" visit cost us $35 because they were adamant about putting our cat on fluids while my wife waited in the lobby consulting me about the $700 tests. The cat wasn't even dehydrated. What a racket. Plus, my cat had to go through the extra stress of being poked with a needle for no reason. If they pressure you, just say no! Go get a second opinion. We told our new vet this story and she laughed out loud at the stupidity of Best Friends Veterinary Clinic. She even said they were known for pressuring for unnecessary tests. Read Less

I took my cat to this clinic quite a few years ago and it was OK, nothing special. I don't even remember what made me not go back, other than not being very impressed, not being very close to my home, and not being a holistic clinic, which I prefer to western vet medicine.Fast forward to about a year ago, when I ("or current resident") received a card in the mail from this clinic (via a marketing company in LA). It contained two plastic cards for free "new client exam" (which, of course I wouldn't use since I would not be a "new" client). But it was somewhat annoying, mainly because the cards aren't recyclable and could have easily instead been made of paper. Then a couple of months later I received the same two plastic cards, yet again. I thought that would be the last of them. Now today, another! This unsolicited mail is not only an unnecessary annoyance, it's environmentally thoughtless. I've contacted this clinic to get off their list of plastic recipients, but really, I shouldn't even have to do that. Read Less

I highly do not recommend this vet. They seem more about selling me different products than actually caring about my pets. I just don't like the vibe there and have been to much better veterinarian than this. They're also very expensive, too. Be prepared to shell out hundreds of dollars for a couple of routine shots! Dr. Walker is the best. She was always very patient with my rambunctious beagle puppy. She cares a great deal about her patients and their humans. We were very sad when we moved away from the Portland area. If you want a caring and knowledgable vet, Dr. Walker is the vet you want! Had to find a place in a pinch and this ended up being such a gem right around the corner from my new apartment. I unknowingly adopted a pregnant cat and when I needed help they got me right in and the staff was so genuine and kind. They all listened to me and my concerns while other places tend to be emotionless and cold. (Why I left my previous vet) I called one day and when I thought they wouldn't get back to me they did later on in the evening out of business hours. Then the following week someone called to check in on her pregnancy and that they had been thinking about us. When I adopted my pup, I wasnt sure what to expect when it came to veterinary care. I am so glad I encounter Dr. Walker while researching clinics in the area. Excellent veterinary care for your animal! I have been very pleased with my experience at Best Friends. As the owner of a rescue dog, it's hard to find people who treat an animal's physical health, mental health, and my own lack of understanding of my dog's needs. I really appreciate that the physical examinations, bloodwork, etc. are so thorough and reflect the ability of *science* to help our pets stay well throughout their natural lives. I like knowing as much as I can to plan for the future and avoid/prepare for any deterioration of health. The depth of the tests offered really me to know, as much as I can, what is going on inside my dog. We love all of the employees (who are all exceedingly patient with my nervous dog) and Dr. Walker is really helpful in deciding how to proceed. I really can't say enough about them, and I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking for thorough, modern, and exceptional care for their pet. Read Less

Dr. Walker is the best Vet I have ever worked with in my long history of working with DVMs. She is extremely compassionate and cares greatly about the pet and understands that a pet is like a person within the structure of a family. That would mean nothing if it were not for her clinical competence which is extremely high! She is the Doctor House of Vets. I Highly recommend her. She is NOT the cheapest vet I have ever worked with but by no means is she the most expensive and as it is with some things in this world cheapest is not best. SHe is the best and at a fair price. Dr. Walker is one of the best in her field. Intelligent, compassionate and forward thinking. Her medical center offers the north side entrance for dogs and the south side for cats. I have used many different Vets in my day and this doctor is the best bar none.   She is compassionate, offers reasonable prices for exceptional care and is extremely helpful to give advice on behavioral issues as well as physical ones.   I strongly appreciate her ability to fight complex diseases and multi symptom illness frameworks in my dog.  She never wastes a test or makes me feel like I am wasting money I always know that I am a doing things in the best interest of my pet and that is very comforting.  This is NOT the cheapest vet office I have ever worked with, nor is it the most expensive but it is the best.  Something to note though, if you live in this PORTLAND area and have a animal emergency in the. Middle of the night you should go directly to Dove Lewis Animal Emergency Hospital as it is 24 hours and is ran like a world class human trauma center. YOU WILL PAY FOR IT but it will save your best friends life.  Other than those tragic situations though I can recommend Best Friends Veterinary Hospital COMPLETELY and WITHOUT RESERVATION. Read Less

I have been bringing my cat to Best Friends for three years now and wouldn't take her anywhere else. Dr. Walker and her staff have taken excellent care of Kitty throughout diagnosis and treatment of her pancreatitis, and to a large extent have taken excellent care of me, an anxious cat mom, by listening patiently to my concerns and working with me to make informed decisions about Kitty's course of treatment. Dr. Walker has gone above and beyond what I would expect from a veterinarian; she has filled out a great deal of paperwork to help me recover the costs of Kitty's treatment, and once even called me at 9 pm with Kitty's test results while waiting at the airport to depart on a family vacation. Who even does that? I trust her and her staff absolutely and appreciate their care and professionalism in helping my sick little Kitty recover and thrive. Read Less

We are fairly new to Best Friends Veterinary in Monrovia. The staff is very knowledgeable, friendly and always willing to help or answer my questions over the phone. Our kitten was possibly facing a devastating disease and when the second blood test came back negative the whole staff celebrated with my husband and called me at home. I brought my puppy in for a UTI check and the vet insisted on about 250 dollars of unnecessary procedures and tests.  They then changed the final cost of the services 2 times between me leaving and when I picked up the puppy again that afternoon.Of all my first time experiences with vet clinics around Portland, this one has been the least reassuring and pleasant.Going to find a new vet next time. We had been taking our dogs to the same vet in the Seattle area for many years, and I now see that their care, was adequate at best. At BFVMC you and your pets are truly special. Our first visit for our two dogs (one is a senior), lasted over two hours. The girls were tested and evaluated, follow ups scheduled, and referrals made to other animal professionals (internist, oral surgeon). We were surprised one evening by a 9:30pm phone call from Dr. Walker, who was at our building with a prescription for our older dog. She "happened to be in the neighborhood" and dropped it by, saving us a trip. I now know what quality veterinary care is like, and really appreciate the time and attention provided by Dr. Walker. I feel like my dogs are in excellent hands, and I trust her to listen to us, and help us make the right decisions regarding their health. These guys are awesome! One of the vets (Janelle Walker) not only stayed after hours to perform surgery on our little kitty, after the surgery was done, she took our kitty home with her so she could monitor her overnight. That's WAY WAY above and beyond the call of duty. Read Less

Dr. Walker was a great vet however, she recommend on meds for my pup that can cause liver damage. Which he experienced laster on from the meds. She gave him happy pills for his mystery itch. Upon a second opinion and some blood work turns out he had some serious allergies. Happy pills were not what the issue was and he now on liver meds to get his liver back in shape. My new vet was surprised at the prescription that she gave my pup and isn't we take him off immediately. I think Dr.Walker has a great heart but a lot outdated practices. Read Less

I recently transferred care of my 10 yr. old pomeranian to Dr. Walker.  I thought she was a really lovely person.  She listened to my husband and I and we all talked through the options for my dog.  She stayed well past closing time, as did her staff, to make sure we were comfortable with our dogs treatment plan.  It was very important to me that we find a vet who would listen to our needs and include us in the decision making for our pets, and Dr. Walker seems to do just that.  I highly recommend her and her team.I'm updating my review to be 5 stars.  The morning after we established care with Dr. Walker she had already put in phone calls to the two cardiologists in the area who could help us further with our pup.  We were so stunned when we made calls before 10am the day AFTER we first came to Dr. Walker and she had already briefed these specialists on our behalf.  TOP NOTCH!  Sincerely, she is excellent. This is one of those vets you hear about that will get your pet in her office and suddenly find a million things to test for and charge you for. Our dog had a small problem and was at her clinic for 2 hours--the bill came to $400 and that was only because we made her stop her ""treatment"" so that we could get a second opinion. She wanted to keep him over night and do thousands of dollars worth of tests. When we went to the emergency vet they ran the basic tests, found nothing wrong and charged us $45. Our dog is totally happy and healthy but trying to literally ""liberate"" him from her office was a nightmare. She made us feel guilty and as though our dog was in critical danger. She and her office were also very quick to be sure that we signed up for care credit so that there would be no limit to the charges that they could ring up. It is such a shame that there are people like this out there that take advantage of pet lovers. This event occurred in May of 2011. Read Less

In the ten years Dr. Janelle Walker has been my veterinarian, she has proven herself to be a compassionate and very experienced caretaker of my many cats and dogs. Animals are never rushed through her clean and thoughtfully designed exam rooms. She will explain what options are available to your pet for care, in addition to her recommendation. In complicated cases, Dr. Walker will not hesitate to consult or refer patients to specialists. She always has the best interest of the animal at heart. Her sensitivity extends to owners, and there are many of us who have been calmed and comforted by her support. She will even make house calls! She cares not just about the cure but the comfort of her patients as they heal and offers pain relief when warranted. I can unreservedly recommend Dr. Walker as a dedicated veterinarian who I trust completely with the care and keeping of those I hold dear. Read Less

I ALSO MISS SOME OF THE STAFF WHEN THEY MOVE ON, AND I WISH I COULD AFFORD NOTHING BUT THE BEST FOR MY PETS. SOME CHOICES ARE DIFFICULT, BUT I KNOW I'M GETTING THE BEST ADVICE ONE IS LIKELY TO FIND. I have been going to Best Friends for a while now. I thought it was o.k...good enough for yearly exams, but badly overpriced and does not offer the option to make payments even if your pet is dying. I was recently there and quickly saw that she, once again, had a whole new staff. You never know who you are going to be dealing with. It's nice when you have consistant staff who get to know you and your pet. She has had some pretty good people there from time to time but her most recent receptionist, Diana was wonderful, caring, took a personal interest in you and your pet and always knew what was going on and went above and beyond for us every time. I have seen her filling in for more than one position from tech to janitor when she was the only employee there. It makes one wonder why Dr. Walker can't keep not only good people but any people. I have seen more staff go through there than a revolving door. If anybody out there knows where Diana is working, that's the place to go. It is often chaos at that clinic because there is always new staff that don't know what they're doing or no staff at all. It takes forever to get a call back from the doctor and she often calls @ 9 or 10:00 at night! And the worst part is she has her staff continually call you and practically beg you to go in and get services, needed or not...they don't take no for an answer. Read Less

We love Dr. Walker and Best Friends Veterinary Medical Center. Dr. Walker is the best vet I have ever known. She sincerely cares about our family and that caring shines through in every interaction. My 4 year old Lab, Lola, who was a reluctant patient with previous vets, joyfully bounds into Dr. Walker?s door every time we go in for a visit. And we see Dr. Walker a lot since Lola likes to eat everything in sight?socks, tennis balls, underwear, hamster food and window frames. Lola actually gets more excited going to the vet than she does day-care. Dr. Walker does a great job of educating pet owners. I?ve learned how to recognize when Lola is sick, what plants and foods are bad, the importance of brushing my pet?s teeth and more. Dr. Walker also does a phenomenal job of patient follow up. She and/or her associates always call to check on how Lola is doing after any cold or surgery. I highly recommend Dr. Walker and Best Friend?s Animal Clinic to everyone I know. Just moved here from Fresno, California and was looking for a place to take my cat, I did some calling around for prices and Best Friends offered a free exam at first visit. I thought I would give it try, booked an exam with the doctor. I showed up and there was no one at the front desk, finally someone showed up. It seemed to be quite hectic on the canine side alot of scurring, phone ringing and ringing receptionist stressed also kept going in back again for a long time. I was then put in a room, took doctor twenty minutes to come in. I barely was able to get a word the vet just kept talking about all these vaccines and dewormers and I was so overwhelmed. I just wanted a wellness check.Not happy with this clinic, might of been bad time of day. Read Less

Dr. Walker is the best, most caring vet I have ever met. She took care of one of my cats for years and now takes care of my kittens. She is well educated and works with us to achive what is best for a our cats. She provides us with information so we can make an educated dicision and does not object when we do not always go with what she reccomends. When one of my cats was sick she gave us her personal cel phone number so we could call her with any changes or concerns. She treats us like we are family. Her services are not that expensive compared to other vets, but she does like to be through. We want someone who takes the time to really look at our cats and see what is going on with them. I recently have had the pleasure to take my pet to Best Friends Veterinary Medical Center. Dr Walker is now the sole owner and has a new and wonderful staff! Since I was a new Client, I got a free exam just so I could see if I even liked going there. You don't find that too often, if at all! I was greeted right away with a big ""hello"" and smile. The paper work was complete and ready for me to review and sign as soon as I arrived. I spent no time waiting in the lobby and was escorted to an exam room. Shortly after that, the technician, Daniette I think her name was, (very warm, friendly, and knowledgeable) came in and did the preliminary exam. She was very good with my pet, who used to be afraid to go to the vet. Gentle and friendly. As soon as she was done Dr. Walker came in. Meeting her was a pleasure. You can tell right away that being a vet is in her soul! She takes her time and treated my pet as if he were the only patient she had. She was loving and caring toward my pet and treated me with kindness and respect. She made sure I understood everything and gave me an educated decision in my pets care. The following day I was amazed to get a phone call from Best Friends asking me how my pet was doing...and it was genuine concern! Dr. Walker was recommended to us by friends with 3 cats, and with good reason. The clinic is a casual, home-like environment without the intimidating impersonal industrial feel that some vets have. It's like going to a friends house. The cat clinic is separated from the dog clinic- this reduces stress on the cats. Dr. Walker and her staff are warm, friendly, and easy to talk to. Personal service is the norm here. When one of our cats reacted badly to a vaccine, we took him back in for follow up. After he felt better and were home, Dr. Walker herself called us to check on Bo. She has more convenient hours than the normal 9-5, does dental work, and offers house calls. A good doctor with a big heart. Read Less

I went to this clinic because of location, but I found a short drive was worth it. The Doctor was ok, once we got to see her. I had a 4pm appointment and was seen at 4:30. In the mean time I waiting, no one said much to me, the phones rang off the hook with no one answering them. The Doctor seem to know what she was doing and was good with my Pup. The assistent was a space case, could barly understand her with all the ""ya know, and stuff"" being said. Over all the poor client service and staff was not worth the ok doctor. The staff for Dr. Walker are really into cats, in an almost too into way but they are very nice. I take my cat and dog here because it is convienent. But I feel that everytime I go in I am being pushed and over sold treatments/products. They try to sell it to you in a way that makes you feel like a poor pet owner if you don't do it for your animal. The prices are pretty costly. I ment to see the other doctor there but was schedualed with Dr. Walker. She didn't make sense to me. She did a lot of talking but really said little. And her assistent was much of the same. I waited for ever in the room for what I'm not sure. I think the medical aspect was ok. Read Less
