Burlingame Veterinary Clinic

Portland, Oregon
General Info
Burlingame Veterinary Clinic in Portland provides assistance to pet families throughout Oregon through its care structure which focuses on emotional recovery and physical pacing while offering exam flexibility. The initiation of intake processes occurs before any paperwork begins. Staff members watch the animal's entry to see if it shows hesitation or circles around while also noting any vocalizations or weight anchoring at the door. The clinic observes these reactions to determine its pacing slow approach quiet staging or quick triage depending on stress level. Balance assessments combine with checks for ear tension along with evaluations of skin warmth and hydration while experts also examine fur texture, oral response, breath patterns and handling resistance. All diagnostic processes depend on owner feedback which shapes medical discussions through observations of sleeping positions, seasonal behavior changes, appetite shifts, and recent avoidance patterns. Burlingame Veterinary Clinic delivers an extensive array of services including wellness checks urgent care geriatric mapping weight stabilization plans and pain indexing. Services can be split into multiple visits for pets that perform better during shorter activity periods. A full-day staggered management approach with interspersed break periods may prove advantageous for some individuals. Families can use this model to prevent retraumatization in animals that are noise-sensitive post-surgical or have previous fears. Body-language reference materials and emotional response scales become essential tools for post-visit planning to monitor at-home progress. Adjustments in language timing and daily routines around post-care decompression are recommended for owners. The scheduling of follow-up actions depends on behavioral readiness instead of fixed chronological schedules. Burlingame Veterinary Clinic delivers a veterinary rhythm to pet families across Portland and nearby Oregon communities that supports both physical healing and emotional self-regulation while maintaining clinical precision.

Dr Z was a thoughtful and compassionate vet who took the time to really listen to all the symptoms and tried to exhaust all options to help my pet. It's unfortunate I even have to write this review to a place we have been taking our dog for 14 years. However, the new vet that took over for Dr. Kellogg did not treat our dog recently with full disclosure financially for the same procedure we have had done at this clinic several times. They don't care to make it right either. A procedure that we used to have done literally went from less than $500 to $1600 when we went to pick her up. Know before you go... terrible customer service when I tried to discuss this situation with the office manager. They don't care, it's about the money to them. Read Less

We have brought our animals in over the years, while the doctors were proficient I would not say that we ever felt very welcome. Recently we were quoted an astronomical amount for a procedure that we would need to have done daily for as long as a few months. We had to seek help from another veterinarian who said even after calculating in all the costs he could think of, he could not justify what they were trying to charge us. Burlingame did try to knock $300 off the daily bill, after we told them we had to seek help elsewhere, but the new office originally quoted us a reasonable price that is still less expensive, as well as we felt instantly welcome there, and they have done a great job with our animal. I realize that this is a job and people need to make a living, but when other professionals in the same field are baffled by your charges it tells me you are pulling one over on your customers. Let me start by saying I gave Burlingame Vet Clinic 5 stars only because 100 stars wasn't an option. My wife and I adopted a rescue dog about a month ago and chose Burlingame Vet Clinic to care for her based on the many many great reviews. Our pooch came to us very underweight, with stomach problems, and seemed to just shut down some days because she wasn't feeling well.Drs. Ziegenbalg and Hunt were outstanding. They caught and diagnosed at least 4 different issues our poor girl was having. After following their treatment plan, she is like a new dog! That alone would earn our loyalty, but the truly remarkable part was the deep concern, consideration, and availability shown by everyone at the clinic. Dr. Z responded to emails at off hours when we had questions, called us to follow up, and showed real caring and commitment to helping us bring our girl to good health. The sort of service and expertise offered at Burlingame Vet Clinic is a rare treasure these days. We are so thankful to have found them. Read Less

Bring plenty of cash, if you are planning to make a habit of going here. The prior Vet, Dr. Kellogg- was fair, conscientious, and scrupulous. He was sensitive and caring, a wonderful vet, and his staff reflected those same values. Our pet was always treated well and we enjoyed the thorough explanations. The new successors to his practice have raised fees dramatically, practice a vanilla flavor of vetinerary medicine, and established an interesting array of services to keep your wallet well challenged. Be sure to compare other practices, if you are newly considering this  version of veterinary care. Burlingame has lost its prior soul. Read Less

We've been going to Burlingame Vet Clinic ever since it opened years ago, and the doctors there have seen to the health of numerous cats over the years (some rescue kitties) and our precious goofy golden retriever. We've always received the best care there from Dr. Kellogg (now retired) and his colleagues, most recently Dr. Hart and Dr. Z. The medical assistants are great and everyone on staff loves animals. We had to put one of our cats to sleep which is always a painful experience, but Dr. Kellogg allowed our family to take all the time we needed with our little friend in the exam room and we were able to sing her to sleep and sit with her for a while afterwards until we felt ready to leave. Really, I can't think of a better place for pets from babyhood to old age. We'll never go anywhere else. Read Less

The veterinarians are friendly and thorough. They take their time during appointments and follow up after with a phone call if we change a medication or a dose. Getting an appointment is easy and they understand the cost of caring for pets so always offer options that are budget friendly while also explaining what they think needs to be done and when. Cannot say enough good things about Burlingame Vet ClinicI adopted a Bichon who had had a litter when she was just an adolescent.  I wanted that phase of her life over and finished. I called around for spaying and found a fair price and a receptive vet clinic at Burlingame. They were warm &  reassuring. We drove over there from East Portland on an icy morning and were welcomed warmly. When I picked GiGi up that evening they gave me a guide of what to expect...excellent information.  Months later when I lost the AVID microchip number for GiGi, they provided it with no hassle.  Burlingame is not in my neighborhood but it is certainly worth the trip across town.Good vets with fair pricing are hard to find! It's sad to have to write this review, because I've been to this clinic previously, and really liked them.  So when it was time to take my dog back for a routine exam, I went back.Dr. Kellogg wasn't in that day, so my dog was seen by another veterinarian.  The vet gave her a good exam, checked her teeth, etc. and we agreed to book a teeth cleaning.  36 hours later, my dog came down with a nasty case of kennel cough.  I live alone and we've not had contact with any other dogs for the past week and a half. I brought her in first thing yesterday, was prescribed antibiotics/anti-tussant, and paid $160 for it.  Today, my dog is worse and it's hard to watch, particularly since she's never been sick before.  I called the clinic to explain the situation, and asked if they would be willing to give me some sort of credit on the teeth cleaning, I was told that that wasn't a fair request, that they aren't responsible for my dog getting sick, but was offered additional cough meds at no cost. That's unfortunate, as I think they had an opportunity to recover my business if they'd been willing to work with me.  While I do like Dr. Kellogg, and think he's a good vet, I'll be taking my dog's care elsewhere as a result. We have been clients of this small clinic for many years and have always been happy with the care our dog and cats have received. We have been down the road of routine care and some pretty serious medical issues, and the thing that stands out most is that they truly care about doing the right thing for my pets without breaking the bank. When our dog needed an infected tooth pulled under anesthesia, I asked some fellow dog owners if they had any experience with this. They talked about what they paid for it, and I was pleased to learn that Dr. Kellogg's prices were MORE than fair. And, he always has the best interest of the animals he takes care of in mind. I really like Dr Byers - she cares and she is knowledgable, but I just can't afford to visit this vet. I was advised to do a urinalysis - which I wanted to do and was asked to collect the urine at home. Great, I thought, we can avoid another expensive vet visit $48 - ouch. I was charged $7.95 just for the little kit (a container, dropper and charcoal). REALLY? When I came back to drop off the urine - the receptionist asked me for $88 for the urinalysis. Are you kidding? It's hard to say anything to the receptionist - it's not her fault. My suggestion - if you are going to charge these kinds of prices - let the customer know - have a price sheet. When I made the appointment I made sure to tell the receptionist that cost of treatment was an issue. Maybe some pet owners do not bat an eyelid, but I want Burlingame to know that they are losing a customer. I just can't rationalize your prices. If money is no object - this is a good vet for you. Dr. Kellogg has done surgery for our dog in the past, and he cared for her as if she were his own dog, the clinic mascot named Curly. When I brought my puppy in to get neutered, I barraged the girls at the front desk with a million questions. What would the procedure entail? How long until he's fully recovered? Are his toenails too long? It was obvious that I was a first time ""dog mom"". The front desk staff answered all of my questions (both on-phone and in-person) with knowledgeable and concise answers. They genuinely seemed to care about his quality of care and my comfort. Also, they accommodated my erratic school/work schedule, and allowed me to have peace of mind while I was apart from him all day (and knowing that he had been under the knife). When I picked up my dog, he was in the state they told me he'd be in: Groggy, gooey eyed, and tired. However, before I could take him out the door, my pup made sure to say goodbye to the girls via LOTS of doggy kisses (obviously, this shows their compassion towards him in my absence). Dr. Kellogg's office is clean and friendly. They were sensitive to my apprehension of leaving my dog for a procedure. Dr. Kellogg and staff listened to my concerns and Dr. Kellogg himself answered questions, even when we called to discuss recent bloodwork. Burlingame Veterinary Clinic

Portland, Oregon

8511 SW Terwilliger Blvd
Portland Oregon 97219

I really like Dr Byers - she cares and she is knowledgable, but I just can't afford to visit this vet. I was advised to do a urinalysis - which I wanted to do and was asked to collect the urine at home. Great, I thought, we can avoid another expensive vet visit $48 - ouch. I'm retired, and I've got a lot of animals. I've also got a lot of opinions about how they should be cared for--what I don't have is a lot of money. Dr. Kellogg, his wife Karen, and Dr. Byers put up with my eccentricities and provide the best care for my pack of critters. We have good conversations, When I had a big bill for work done, we bartered the balance away in exchange for my power-washing graffitti off his back wall. I have a farm background, and Dr. Kellogg indulges my inclination to 'do-it-myself"", yet still provides good technical support. I consider them my friends, as well as my Docs. Read Less

This neighborhood vet clinic is truly a gem. From the moment I walk in the door, I am treated as a valued client and as a friend. Staff are kind and remember my pets by name. ""Dr. John"" (Kellogg) and Dr. Byers have seen our circus of pets, and are both personable and extremely thorough. They remember me, my animals and always make us feel welcome, no matter how busy they are. Dr. Kellogg has done surgery for our dog in the past, and he cared for her as if she were his own dog, the clinic mascot named Curly. These folks really care about animals as family members, and even though we live closer to several other clinics, we would not dream of moving our pet's care. Thanks to the Burlingame docs and staff for caring for our ""kids"" in a professional, comfortable and warm manner. I would trust them to no others. Read Less

What? Seriously folks, I don't know what the person who wrote the bad review was thinking when he/she wrote it, but Dr. Byers at Burlingame is wonderful!!! She is kind, compassionate, logical, extremely gentle, and one of the best vets I've ever had the pleasure to visit. Her true passion for the health and happiness of pets is *unparalleled* -- I have an older dog, and Dr. B's ability to treat this little guy with all of the love and care in the world is amazing. I don't write a lot of reviews for CitySearch, but when I saw the bad review, I just had to speak up! Everyone at Burlingame is great -- Dr. Kellogg is who we went to originally (we love him, too!), but we trust everyone there. Need a great vet clinic, where you and your pet will be treated with respect, you'll be given all of the options up front, and you'll be told the truth, every single time? Please visit wonderful Dr. Byers at Burlingame! Read Less

I ended up here originally because it's a stone's throw from my house. How lucky was I to discover Dr. Kellogg and Karen (his wife, who works in the front). They are smart, compassionate people who will go the extra mile to make sure you and your animal companions are comfortable and well-informed. He is also a straight shooter - he won't spend your money for fun and he won't sugar coat. Though not as cheap as, say, Banfield, he is well-priced for the market and I always feel like my pets are getting attentive, intelligent care. Read Less

I've just recently looked at my receipt, and noticed that under description and price, something listed is: ""Tender Love and Care: $0"". You can say that again!!! Read Less

Dr. Kellogg's office is clean and friendly. They were sensitive to my apprehension of leaving my dog for a procedure. Dr. Kellogg and staff listened to my concerns and Dr. Kellogg himself answered questions, even when we called to discuss recent bloodwork.
