Gabriel Park Veterinary Clinic

Portland, Oregon
General Info
The veterinary appointments at Gabriel Park Veterinary Clinic in Portland transform into dynamic exchanges influenced by the pet's immediate perceptions and reactions. Throughout Oregon this responsive model delivers support to homes. The beginning stages of interaction frequently rely on nonverbal communication. Before attempting a hands-on exam the team analyzes tail position alongside spatial hesitation and micro-responses. The adjustment of both lighting and scent levels in individual rooms helps prevent startle reflexes from being triggered. Appointments follow the pet’s internal timeline without external control. Certain practitioners initiate their assessments through orthopedic examinations while others start with basic observational scanning techniques depending on where tension patterns manifest. Gabriel Park Veterinary Clinic delivers diagnostic services and laboratory work while providing illness intervention alongside orthopedic support as well as dermatological care and oral health treatments for multiple species. Examinations might disregard sequences or rearrange procedures when faced with indicators such as lip licking paw withdrawal and shifting gaze. Evaluations of pain indicators rely on posture and breath instead of vocalization which proves crucial for stoic breeds and prey-species animals. Post-treatment phases promote re-acclimation processes. Families receive detailed instructions about persistent behavioral responses alongside methods to detect secondary stress indicators and guidelines for when decompression should take precedence over immediate activities. Home care plans focus on the pet’s sensory threshold instead of solely physical recovery benchmarks. Gabriel Park Veterinary Clinic delivers veterinary care to Oregon households through a conversational approach that transcends clinical methods by attuning to animal signals of comfort confusion and calm in a quiet manner.

Amazing vets, took such great care of Carl and got me in on incredibly short notice after a scare. I called right before closing and they were able to get me an appointment for first thing in the morning, and gave me the name and address of a local animal hospital if things got worse before our appointment. They helped me get the products necessary for his recovery, and were very understanding and supportive of my limited budget. Could not ask for a better experience. Read Less

No complaints about the quality of veterinary care, but the pricing and staff are bad news! They will try to squeeze every penny they can out of you. I was told by my hometown vet that my puppy needed vaccination shots. I took my pup here to have to vaccination done, and the woman behind the counter tried to sell me sell me on an entirely new series of shots. When I declined, saying I didn't believe they were necessary, per instruction of my hometown vet, she implied that I didn't care about my puppy. She continued attempting to appeal to my emotions, trying to squeeze an extra $100 out of me. I left the office feeling angry disgusted. I discovered a tapeworm in my dog's poop and decided to give them another chance, only because it would save me the hassle of transferring my dog's medical records to a new vet. They tried to charge me $40 for medicine to deworm a 12 pound dog. I called another vet and they said they could do it for $10-$20. Overall, this place is overpriced and the staff are slimy. The staff here has always been super helpful and knowledgeable. We usually see Dr. Cheshire and she's always been wonderful. We can also get appointments fairly quickly, which is always great! Today they went above and beyond. As I was bringing my injured dog in for a check up, my toddler smashed her finger in the door and was hysterical. They immediately did everything possible to help us including getting us an ice pack, stickers AND bringing out some adorable kittens for my daughter to see....the only thing that got her to stop screaming. Drs Hawkins and Cheshire have been great with our elderly cats, and the staff is always fantastic. We were especially moved when, on a Saturday morning, our 20-yr-old cat became distressed by a tumor in her throat, and we decided it was time to put her to sleep. They worked us in urgently, took us very discreetly to the bereavement room, and gave us all the time we needed with our precious Gabby. Dr Cheshire was so compassionate and understanding, and clearly loves cats. Later she wrote us a very sweet card, which meant so much. We are both physicians and have a high standard for care, and have never been disappointed here. Support this wonderful, independent clinic! Read Less

I have gone to this vet clinic for many years with several cats and a dog needing care.Recently my 14 year old cat who had been diagnosed with cancer 11 months prior had come to the end of her journey and it was time to let her go.  The process of putting her down at this clinic was right on and very comforting.  Their words made it easier, even though it did not stop the tears.  I was not rushed and the staff took their time.  I  left with a small clay heart with my kitties footprints.  Shortly after I received a condolence card from Dr. Cheshire.Great vets here and supportive staff.  Never had any trouble with getting in to see a vet it was when urgent and regular appointments were usually right on time.  Very caring staff. I have been going to this clinic for years now anytime I have needed to.  So no, I haven't been a "consistent" client.  However, I have in the past had an emergency situation with a cat and thankfully they worked with me on the cost and allowed me to make payments.  Fast forward to the other day...  My dog had an urgent need to go to the vet, so I called them, got cost estimates, and asked if there was anyway that they would work with me again.  I was told I would need to talk to the doctor about that, fine.  WhenI got to the office, the office manager came over and this is where it all went downhill.  She was RUDE beyond belief, very nasty in the way she talked to me.  I was on the verge of tears and she told me that yes she had looked up my records and seen where I had paid, but that they would not finance or work with me on the 200$ it was going to take to lance a wound, clip nails, and prescribe meds.  Now, I understand they are not a bank, and they can't finance everyone that walks through the door.  Fine.  My problem here is in the way I was treated by the office manager.  She was very condescending, rude, and just had an all around BAD attitude.  No compassion for the situation.  Snotty. Totally unacceptable and unprofessional.  The doctor was awesome, and Kassandra was a class act.  As for the front desk they were ok.  But that office manager needs to GO.Overall, I am 70/30 with this vet ONLY bc of the way I was treated by her.  I likely won't return, even tho their level of care is good to excellent in most ways.I advise the owner(s) to re-evaluate some of their staff, and make some changes. From what I've read here, I haven't been the first to have problems. Read Less

I can't say enough good things about this vet.  We stayed much too long with another vet that i didn't really care for, and I'm so sorry I didn't make the switch earlier.  Friends recommended Dr. Libby Hawkins to us, and she has been terrific with both our cats and dog.  Our previous vet would chatter away the whole time he was doing an "exam," which took about 2 minutes and cost a fortune.  Here the vet is really focused on your animal.  Vet tech staff have all been great.  Very kind and patient with me teaching me to administer subcutaneous fluids to my cat with kidney disease.  If I had had this type of patient personal attention with my previous cat I wouldn't have given up on the whole SubQ route and he would have lived a longer, more healthful life.  Dr. Hawkins always returns our phone calls -- even if it means she has to get back to us at 8 o'clock at night, she never lets a question or concern go unanswered.  We have been very impressed. We have had only good experiences with Dr. Hawkins, vet techs, and front desk staff.  All very caring and good with animals.  We are so glad to have found them. The office was my preferred office, i liked the owner and staff.  however a few years ago, after much thought we decided to euthanize our cat.  He had a liver condition and we had initially been told by someone there to put him down, we did not but the care became a lot to handle.  And he would disappear for days at a time and not take his medication (unbeknownst to us a special needs neighbor was keeping him in her apartment.) when I made the appointment I was told they would do an exam...long story short they deemed his condition to be better than before and convinced me to give him up for adoption.  I was told the people adopting him would be agreeable to an open adoption.  And I agreed only with that caveat.  He had been our cat for 13 years, i had tube fed him every two hours at the onset of his illness, my daughter had grown up with him, and it was only the time and the promise that the adoptive "parents" had an outdoor enclosure that made the terms agreeable.  We made the transfer through Gabriel park vet.  Approximately 6 weeks afterwards I contacted them to set up a time to visit with him (i waited a bit to make sure he was bonded) was told at that time that the couple who had adopted him had changed their minds and were no longer open to our visit.  Needless to say I was heartbroken.  It's been almost three years and I think about him daily.  We considered taking legal action but decided that since it was a verbal agreement between ourselves and Gabriel park vet that it would be hard to enforce.  It just sucked though and I still blame them for giving me false information.  I will never go there, and I will never recommend them. I've been a dedicated client since Libby opened her doors. She's been a wonderful vet to the three dogs I've had treated there. I trust her completely and wish I could continue to use her services, but am on a fixed income and can no longer afford the constantly rising costs of the veterinary care in this office.  They are not willing, even for long-standing customers (as I was told on the phone this morning) to help you make a payment plan so I have done some due diligence and found I will have to change my provider. Sigh.  After making some calls I found that the basic dental cleaning is almost double the three other places I called. When I had a golden retriever I thought this was a good place but when I got a more challenging dog I found their true colors came out. Two canines and two felines in our family get their care from Libbi Hawkins and her staff at Gabriel Park. The pups are always comfortable and relaxed at the clinic. The cats don't love leaving home, but do as well there as they have anywhere. We've been impressed with their ability to research and answer our most difficult questions. They are more than willing to work with us as we make decisions on behalf of all four animals. For example, they don't think we're ""completely"" crazy when we prefer to titre the dogs rather than just doing the next routine immunization. They've always welcomed us participating in the hospital care of the animals, including sitting on their floor the whole day when one of the pups was needing intensive care. They are able to mobilize good referrals and outside services when one of the animals needs something they can't provide. I'm impressed with their attention to prevention too. Read Less

Instead of ignoring us or acting annoyed they were unbelievably kind and helpful. We will definitely continue to come here. Read Less

I will also agree with a previously written review that the front desk staff could be more helpful. Read Less

When I had a golden retriever I thought this was a good place but when I got a more challenging dog I found their true colors came out. The front desk seemed to always give me wrong directions from what the vets told me and they want excessive money from what other vets charge and make you come in for every little question. They do not have a large selection of food that they prescribe for you or none at all. You have to make another trip. Read Less
