Not a nice experience. My puppy and I went in for a very expensive intro consult that I was told was an hour, but was a 25 minute wait and 20 minute consult. My dog is going to be my service animal. The vet told me my breed have bad temperaments and are neurotic, and prone to seizures. I was shocked and said surely it's case by case and down to training and breeding too, and she said well sorry if it upsets you but it's the truth and the only reason my puppy has a good temperament is because he's so young that his real temperament isn't showing yet. I understand about informing owners about health care risks, to empower them in caring appropriately for their pets. But this had no such intent behind it, as it was totally disempowering. I felt belitted, judged and highly uncomfortable. I left crying as all my confidence in our training and my care felt undermined. This is the first time since owning pets through my entire life that a vet has not been kind. I will not be returning. Read Less

I love how knowledgeable Dr. Wagner is about natural treatments, like homeopathy, Chinese herbs, acupuncture and nutrition. And of course she is well versed in conventional medicine, diagnostics, and treatments too. It gives me great comfort to have a vet who understands and makes room for my personal preference to avoid giving drugs to my animals. I ask a lot of questions and she has always been patient and helpful. I have taken my animals to Hawthorne Vet Clinic for many years. My animals like Dr. Wagner and the vet techs, who are all very kind. And since one of my cats is very shy and afraid of new experiences, it's great that Dr. Wagner also offers house calls! Read Less

We've had some real challenges with our kitty lately!! And, we're 100% confident that he wouldn't have lived through them if not for the expert, loving, holistic care that he's gotten at this clinic. Everything about it feels good, from the feel of the waiting room, to the wonderful front desk staff, fabulous vet techs and excellent vets who practice Chinese medicine and do acupuncture as well as laser acupuncture (at a fair price!). Of course, having the background of western medicine means that they have the full-spectrum of care available to us. The compassionate care they offer to our kitties is unsurpassed and we're extremely relieved to know we have a great fit here!! We've been around the block with this particular kitty but landing at Hawthorne Veterinary Clinic feels like home. To us, they're family <3 Read Less

I highly recommend Dr. Wagner at Hawthorne Veterinary Clinic. My Boston Terrier, Opie, was diagnosed with mast cell cancer, a type of skin cancer, 3 years ago. The vet who did the biopsy was pushing surgery, chemo, and radiation, and told me Opie could be dead in 6 weeks if I didn't do it. I don't believe in western medical treatment for cancer, so I did a bunch of research and went to see Dr. Wagner. She was awesome - totally supportive of my decision to treat him alternatively, and we got him started on a regimen of Chinese herbs and other immune boosting supplements and reviewed his diet. Opie just turned 9 and is still going strong! I'm asked frequently if he's a puppy. She takes a lot of time with her patients and answers questions thoroughly. Her office is run efficiently and the front desk staff are super friendly and helpful. I recently moved away from Portland and have not yet found a vet to replace her! Read Less

I am so impressed by Dr. Wagner and Dr. Schaefer (these are the only two I have seen), both were very kind and knowledgeable with my Lily's anxiety and luxating patellas...I had a bad experience with another practice which left her with very high anxiety which is not good for her health. The staff and vets went out of their way to help her and treat her with such compassion, kindness and positive reinforcements (treats), she now looks forward to going to the vet and is very relaxed; not the panting, scared, flight response she was previously. It is also important that they understood I had a bad experience at another vet and did not hold that against me, lets face it, vets have to deal with the vets family, so communication and compassion is the key, I appreciate this so very much.... I drive a ways, but it is worth it. Thank you! Read Less

I've been taking my 8 year old cat with an itchy skin condition to Dr. Wagner for several years now. The time Dr. Wagner spends talking to me about my cat's condition is priceless. She listens carefully to what I am saying and offers several treatment options.  I am honest with her about what I am prepared to do with my cat.  It's a mutual agreement - not a command. You have to be of a certain belief system to go to a naturopathic veterinarian. She is not a traditional, western vet and you must be prepared for that kind of experience. In May of this year, I lost my dog of 8 years. He died 4 days after being put on meds that were prescribed by Wagner of Hawthorne Veterinary Clinic. We had gone in to attempt to relieve him of his chronic itchiness, and 4 days later, he went into a massive seizure, experienced severe brain hemorrhaging, & could not be saved when we got him to Dove Lewis. I was told by Wagner that the drugs may or may not have caused an unforeseen exacerbation of a pre-existing neurological condition which was never looked for or diagnosed. I trusted her supposed expertise, & when I adopted a dog from the humane society months later, I chose to bring him to her. When a suture from his being neutered surfaced many weeks after the procedure, she insisted on sedating him in order to remove it but assured he would only be out for a few minutes, and that he would be right as rain when he woke up. He ended up being out for over 20 minutes & was convulsing heavily. She forcefully tried to wake him up despite my pleads for her not to, and he awoke with a startled yelp of pain. He could barely walk, was dazed and slack jawed, and his normally springy tale hung limp and dragged on the ground for the next hour. I am now convinced without a doubt that Wagner is unfit for her chosen profession and should be stripped of her credentials. Read Less

Hawthorne Veterinary Clinic has been my primary veterinary clinic for 14 years. My first furry companion received excellent care from Dr. Hamann throughout his declining years. Her knowledge, treatment and care allowed him to have less pain during his last years without dosing him with pharmaceuticals. She has been the primary care with Obie. He's had a few surgeries ie. neutering and teeth cleaning and has always recovered quickly. His yearly check ups are thorough. Most recently Dr. Wagner treated Obie when he needed to see a veterinarian as soon as possible. Her care, treatment and knowledge is also top notch. I've read a few reviews here. Let me address the cost first: The cost is comparable to other clinics. The front office staff many years ago was less than great. Hawthorne Holistic Vet is a VERY good place to bring your pet. I have had nothing but positive experience with them - even through this very difficult time. I noticed on the reveiws here referring to a doctor that isnt there anymore. Dr. Cornelia Wagner is the owner and has been since i started. Had to make a decision finally to euthanize one of my cats. I cannot say how helpful and amzing this vet was (and is). They dimmed the lights and play soft music for your pet and scheduled it before lunch so you can stay with your pet for as long as you like. I cried so much..and it was a very thought out and difficult choice.  Finally the day came..but this vet helped make that transition easier than any other place i can imagine going to. I am forever grateful. I still see them for my other cat ,Stormy.  Dr. Wagner is patient and thorough. She is knowledgeable and open and also a good listener. They told me that the first visit would be an hour long exam, which pleased me, as I had a number of questions to run by the vet. I love Hawthorne Veterinary Clinic! When I left California 13 months ago, my Veterinarian in CA was all gloom and doom about the progression of the renal failure of my two senior kitties (age 14 1/2 now). She predicted they would need to start on subcutaneous fluids very soon. The first time I met with my kitties and Dr. Judkins, he spent nearly an hour with us pouring over all their records from CA. He gave me some hope and had a very optimistic attitude about their ability to maintain or even get a little better with some Chinese medicine. I left feeling so happy and hopeful that the old guys might have a few years left in them, even with chronic illness. Fast forward 13 months, and they are still doing well. One kitty just had a cyst removal and his very first teeth cleaning. Dr. Judkins was very reassuring in talking to me about the safety of current anesthesia practices (I was reluctant due to having lost a cat in 1990 to anesthesia). He came out of the procedures without any problems and without any teeth removed. I find the office staff to be friendly and helpful. There's a call in line for my regular prescription refills and they are always ready promptly. Today I showed up to bring in my other cat for a blood work appointment with a vet tech... except I was a day early for my appointment! They squeezed my cat in anyway, which they didn't have to do. Dr Hamann is an excellent, kind, and caring vet, but in her absence, we took our ailing cat, the love of our lives, to see another, newer vet at Hawthorne Vet Clinic, who gave our beautiful boy an extremely cursory examination, then told us that the problem was that he had ""too much heat"" in his diet and recommended a raw food diet. That was it - all he had done was to palpate our cat's belly. We had tried raw food on our cats before, but they would never eat it. Nevertheless, although dubious about this vague diagnosis, we spent months trying every brand and type of raw cat food, at great expense, and all for nought. None of our cats would eat it, including the ferals we feed. Our sick cat began to lose weight alarmingly, until finally we took him to another, traditional vet clinic, and were told that he had advanced cancer, was dying, and all we could do for him now was home hospice care. They instructed us in how to make him comfortable, provide IV fluids, and dose him with kitty morphine for pain. We took our boy home and did what we could, but the diagnosis came too late and he died less than a week later. This is just a warning - do not depend on herbs, flower remedies, raw food, or a rushed, dodgy examination from a 'holistic' vet for a diagnosis and cure. Always get a second opinion from a traditional vet - if we had done so sooner, our little love could possibly have been treated in time and still be with us. It would be nice if herbal medicine worked for serious conditions, or if trying to conjure a diagnosis from little more than divination was valid, but we have never had any luck with it, and will not be trying it any more. This is our second cat to die from undiagnosed cancer while under the care of a holistic veterinary clinic, and we feel that it was our fault for not seeking help from traditional veterinary medicine sooner. The guilt and sorrow we feel will never leave us. Read Less

Dr. Judkins saved my cat's life! As a kitten, Sasha was diagnosed with FIP-like symptoms and was near death, but with the help of both Chinese and Western herbs, holistic and allopathic treatments, he made it through. Seven years later, Sasha is healthy and as lively as can be. Subsequently, I've taken all five of my cats there.Because this is a holistic clinic, nutrition is a key part of the evaluation of an animal's health, so a significant amount of an exam's time can be spent discussing the animal's diet. Switching my cats to a raw meat diet, their species-appropriate diet, changed their lives for the better. Chronic health problems, like crystals in urine, no longer exist. They are healthier and happier for it.I was so impressed by the treatment my cats received that I was inspired and motivated to go back to school to be a veterinarian. I am proud to note that late last year, I got a job working at the clinic one day a week. I can see how you might think that this review may be biased because of this, but quite the contrary. My opinion is only reinforced now that I know the doctors and staff better. Thanks, Hawthorne Vet Clinic.Cheers! Read Less

I haven't been taking my dog Sampson to Hawthorne Veterinary Clinic for long, but my interactions with Dr. Ingrid Hamann have all been positive. Her wealth of knowledge regarding health, wellness and treatment for an older dog have been more than I could hope for. She took time getting to know Sampson, and is genuinely focused on him and his care at every appointment. Her initial recommendations are those that are the least invasive & expensive, while always giving me the whole picture & all options to choose from. This is a relatively small office, and it is obvious their hours are long and their days are packed. There is usually a wait to see the dr (between 15 - 30 minutes), but I've encountered this at every vet I've ever taken my dog to see.My dog is currently taking herbal supplements for liver and joint health, and I have seen an improvement in his energy level and general "mood" in the last two weeks. I have never taken Sampson to see Dr. Judkins, but for those of you who have had bad experiences with him, I'd recommend trying Dr. Hamann next time - before dismissing totally this option for holisitc health care in Portland. And some of the front desk staff is also a bit rude, but killing people with kindness is my  method of dealing with those situations.2/15/11: Recently Sampson has been seeing Dr. Judkins for cancer treatment & Cushings Disease solutions. I wanted to share that my interactions with Dr. J have all been postiive. He's an amazing doctor whose cutting edge solutions & treatment options in the holistic veterinary field are worth exploring. He never rushes thru conversations when discussing new developments & treatments, and takes the time to answer all of my questions thoroughly. The whole team at Hawthorne Vet Clinic are heroes to Sampson & my family. Read Less

May be a good vet clinic, but they have outgrown themselves and have not made the changes necessary to support the volume/growth they have been experiencing for at least a year, maybe 2 years. I have been going to this vet for 4 years and can't recommend it - the continuity just isn't there. Lost refill requests, delayed appointments, staff too busy to be friendly. It's a shame that it's not getting resolved. One last pet peeve I have is that after 4 years they still call my cat a ""he"" although she's a ""she"". Read Less

Read Less

I highly recommend Hawthorne Veterinary Clinic. Read Less

Read Less

I have been seeing Dr. Jeff and the staff at Hawthorne Vet Clinic for the past two years and could not be happier - especially after past debacles at other vet clinics!  The staff are all genuinely concerned about all animals and show that your pet is their priority! My little min pin, Duncan, has suffered a back injury that Hawthorne has kindly helped us through in treating without harsh prescriptions.  When Duncan's sister, Morgan, suddenly passed I was comforted by how much the office staff and Dr J cared even though they had much less contact with Morgie since she was in great health.I started seeing Dr. J after he extended the life of my good friend's Aussie after he had been diagnosed with Thyroid cancer - after the regimen that Dr. J prescribed and through care the pup went on to live another four years!  Not long after my mother's beloved Rottie was diagnosed with a intestinal tumor, her original vet at Meridian Park wanted to put her down immediately and stated that she had weeks to live...Thanks to Dr J, Cydne lived a happy year plus longer!  Dr. J suggested some herbs to slow the growth and a change in diet and immediately Cydne showed huge improvement. This is by and far the best veterinary office in Portland - and I have seen and visited several. I came in to purchase something and stood staring at the reception in the back room(10 ft away) as she typed something. She failed to acknowledge that I was waiting. When I asked to pay she said she would help me when she was done typing? I have considered bringing my cats here. But I can never get passed the snotty front desk. It is a great idea for natural pet care but you have to pay a "consult" fee just to introduce your pet. Something around $150.00. Their customer service is the classic Portland customer service model of which is based on being rude and pretentious. Customer service means that you value customers and your main purpose is to be friendly! No customers, no job!Read Less

Read Less

I currently have 6 dogs and have been involved in rescue for over 25 years. I've dealt with many vets and vet clinics over the years and can honestly say that Hawthorne Vet is the best ever. Dr. Judkins is a miracle worker. My Boxer/Pit lived to just over 15 and I credit Dr. J with his longevity. He had many health issues but lived happily as long as he did because of the excellent and knowledgeable care from Dr. J. The whole staff is wonderful. They all care so much about animals. I feel as well cared for as my animals.

Read Less
