Interesting. I'm surprised by all the five stars. When I took my newly adopted, fearful Great Pryanees in for an initial checkup the male vet said he would always be fearful and an unmanageable dog unless I dropped him off at a dog camp. Then upsold me on everything he could. What should have been a $75 appointment ended up costing close to $300. As we left, my mother said to me, "Wow! There are a lot more caring vets than that. Please don't take him back there." Meanwhile my puppy has grown into a wonderful, happy, confident fellow with just a loving, stable home. Now that his vaccinations are due I'm searching for a new vet I can build a lifelong relationship with. Brought in our new kitty for her first exam and a vaccine. The staff behind reception got us in quickly, and the technician who asked all of the questions he needed before the vet saw her was perhaps the nicest person I've ever met and my favorite human ever. Super friendly. The vet himself was professional, thorough, and thoughtful. It became clear she had one or two issues that needed to be cleared up, but I never once felt like they were trying to squeeze me dry with unnecessary labs. Let's be frank, that last part is important to me. I found this place on Yelp ad I'm glad I did. Our family has used Hillsdale Vet for almost 10 years - three dogs and two cats. Without question, everyone in this practice is completely dedicated to the health of our animals. Additionally, they understand that pet logistics can be tricky when life is busy, and they do their best to recommend care plans that fit with your schedule and ability. Not only have they helped us through the many ups and downs of pet parenthood, but they consistently go above and beyond to make sure that our animals - and our family - get the best possible care. When we had to put our old dog to sleep several years ago, they stayed open late and held our newborn baby so that we could focus our attention on saying goodbye to our sweet puppy. When our cranky old cat needed a quieter home, they helped us find the perfect companion for her retirement years. Currently they are helping us care for our senior St Bernard (they've been his only vet since he was a puppy!) who has had chronic foot problems that have defied explanation. Under the leadership of Dr Vaniman, he, Dr Braun, and Dr Edens have worked tirelessly to figure out the best way to treat him. The technicians are all very loving and kind and treat our animals as if they were their own. Consistently good care, every time I have brought Daisy in she has always left with the issue resolved or identified and referred to a specialist. The main issue being when she tore her "ACL" they told me what it was and put me in touch with a great surgeon Dr Van Gundy. My experiences with the Hillsdale Veterinary Hospital are fantastic. The staff is always so kind and helpful! I am always able to get my questions answered and never feel like a burden. Dr. Shaun is there for the animals and that is clear. He is honest and forthright about any medical needs and alternatives available. My drive time to take our pups here ends up being around 1 1/2 hours and it is totally worth it! I have been to several vets over the years and am so thankful to have found a team that cares about my fur babies as much as I do. I love this place. They obviously love animals and their human family. They always remember our little guy and are invested in his health. Here is a quick anecdote. My lil guy cut his paw on a shard of glass. We couldn't keep it bandaged well enough that he couldn't take it off, so I took him in. Things were so hectic that I accidentally told them the wrong leg to bandage. When I got back home I realized my error. So I called to inform them, but it was right around closing time. They still told me to bring him in and rebandaged him after closing hours. On top of that they didn't charge me. Dr. Vaniman and his team are the most compassionate, caring, honest, thorough, and transparent veterinary professionals I have ever experienced.  We have been there a couple times now after having some emergencies with our pets.  They go above and beyond to help and place your pets needs first... Unlike the other vets we've dealt with in the past who like to wrack up charges with unnecessary tests and procedures.  They work with you to make a plan for the best outcome for your pet and stand by their word.  I'm sad we are moving soon, as we will really miss them.  They're really second to none.  You always leave there feeling like your pets are in the best and most caring hands. Wonderful clinic with very kind, thoughtful, and compassionate staff. Dr Braun cared for our dog Boda when she became very ill. He fit us in his already full schedule to treat her. He was well informed, straight forward, and explained her situation and our options clearly and thoroughly. Though Boda turned out to have very advanced liver cancer, we felt comforted knowing we did all we could for her and are grateful to the Hillsdale clinic and Dr Braun for their excellent care of Boda in her last days. Dr. Vaniman and his staff were amazing with me and my special needs senior chocolate lab Leroy Brown.  After tie back surgery, unfortunately, Leroy was one of the unlucky dogs who frequently suffered from aspiration pneumonia.  During his last aspiration, his surgeon was in surgery the entire day and I had only a holistic vet as back up.  I called any vet within a 10 mile radius to get him the timely treatment he needed.  And, while Dr. Vaniman was also in surgery that day, he was awesome enough to fit my brown dog in and give him the immediate care he needed and the gentle and calming words I needed to get yet another aspiration with my best friend.  Both Dr. Vaniman and I were pleased to see Leroy sprung back after that aspiration; however, only a few days later he started to exhibit symptoms not associated with his laryngeal paralysis tie back surgery side effects.  My baby boy was lethargic, not eating and just not himself.  I took him in immediately, again without an appointment, and they were kind enough to fit Leroy in.  Dr. Vaniman identified what needed to be addressed without hours (NSAIDs for hip pain and Rx diet for crystals in urine).  And while my little angel pie was fine that night the following day he had significantly declined.  Thanks to Dr. Vaniman, and again without another appointment,  Brown Dog was timely diagnosed with internal bleeding most likely caused by a mass in his abdomen.  I adore Dr. Vaniman for not insisting we continue to run tests, imaging, studies, etc.  Instead, he asked permission to take x-rays to confirm his concerns.   Thanks to Dr. Vaniman Leroy had no pain and suffering and his prompt diagnosis allowed me to get my baby boy home and be put to rest in his own bed and in my arms in a peaceful and dignified way.  The way I had always hoped for for my boy.  Dr. Vaniman was calming while delivery such horrific and surprising news as I always thought it would be aspiration pneumonia that would take my brown dog.  He was patient with my lack of appointments, urgent needs and had a way of making me feel as if I was the only patient he had despite my knowing otherwise and knowing he fit me in.  Now for his staff, WOW!  Talk about a nurturing, compassionate and loving group of strangers.  I was stunned with how EVERYONE OF THEM immediately made me and Leroy feel like we were their only patient and that our pain and sadness was theirs too.I cannot imagine how Leroy Brown made it to the age of 13 years, one month and 21 days without the team at Hillsdale Veterinary Hospital.  When you receive news such as the news Brown Dog and I got, their amazing compassionate staff made all the difference in the world.  They helped with transporting him in and out of the car, always smiling offering tissues and warm hugs.  I mean it when I share their compassion was endless.I highly and genuinely recommend Dr. Vaniman and his amazing staff.  They will fit you it  to the extent possible, treat you like family, make you feel like you are a priority and not take advantage of you if you find yourself vulnerable.  I, honestly, appreciated the time they took to send me a sympathy card after my significant loss.These guys are top notch.THANKS HILLSDALE VET HOSPITAL.Viva La Leroy Brown. I have been looking for the right puppy for 1.5 years. I finally found her and picked her up on a Saturday. I wanted to get a puppy wellness check within the breeders 72 hour guaranteed health. I called a few places, many were closed and the rest said they didn't have opening till later that week. I took a look at yelp and saw that hillsdale veterinary hospital was open and had great reviews. I called and Kathy was very nice and accomidating. An hour later Dr. Braun was checking over my new pup! He was great. Even as we talked he was examining Eleanor. My second visit was just as Great! It was an emergency visit and Kathy told me to come right in. Dr. Vaniman saw her right away and checked her out. He explained everything I asked about and gave me peace of mine. So far so good here. I took my boy in to check on some issues he was having with an odd growth on his mouth and a cyst like growth on his tail. This was really hard for me as he has had excellent health for almost 9 years now and I am very hesitant to trust anyone with him as I rarely meet a vet that actually seems intelligent enough to trust completely. But these guys were excellent from the kind receptionists who got us in in good time, to the nurses who were also very kind and knowledgeable all the way to our main doc Shaun who really seems to know his stuff. We disagree somewhat on the pros and cons of neutering dogs, he like most vets tends to push for neutering but once I made it clear to the staff that I wasn't interested they actually made a note on my record to stop bugging me about it.The more we looked at my boys conditions the more it looked like the safest path was to do a surgery to remove the growths. I did this in confidence knowing that we had an intelligent thoughtful doc, a good surgery record, and the right equipment to help sure things go smoothly. So far it went well and even though there was a lot of extra work once they got in there and shaved some fur off they were very reasonable with their pricing.So the surgery is done now and my boy is recovering, we actually called the evening of as he was having some bleeding I was concerned about and rather than just telling me not to worry they had me come by for a free check up to make sure everything was ok, that was nice and it turned out to just be some intestinal stress that cleared up later.I'll update this as the time goes by but so far this may be the best veterinary service we have ever had, everyone seems to really care here :) Read Less

Hillsdale Vet has a really great staff! Every single person there was warm and welcoming, and genuinely seem to like their job. We've only been in Portland for a year and when we first came we went to some other vet nearby to get a checkup for our cat. The difference between the first place we went and Hillsdale are worlds apart. Dr. Ryan was very nice and informative. He answered all questions we had and gave us some great information and tips. The whole experience was so painless, our cat took the trip so well. We've definitely found our vet! Dr. Vaniman and the crew at Hillsdale Vet are the best! Our 8 year old Boxer/Lab pup Stoli had an incredibly persistent, non-cancerous abcess on his neck/collarbone area that has been a mystery for over two years. By the time a suggestion for a third surgery came up, we were pretty exhausted with our otherwise healthy pup just not getting better, but were well informed of our options and possible outcomes without having pressure to make a decision either way. Dr. Vaniman has been patient, caring, and determined to help us resolve Stoli's health issues in every way possible. Him and the staff have the best interests in mind regarding health prognosis, cost, recovery, and peace of mind for a dog and his people; they truly go above and beyond with communication and care of the whole family. With frequent visits over the past year or so, it was comforting and incredibly helpful to know that no matter who we ran into at the office, everyone knew of our case and were up to speed on how to help. The staff at Hillsdale Vet Hospital are among the nicest and most compassionate I've ever had the opportunity to know. We brought our sick, senior cat to Dr. Shaun nearly a year ago. Slingshot's fur was dull and he was losing weight. Using his experience, Dr. Shaun ran a few basic tests that he thought would point us in the direction of a diagnosis and, fingers crossed, a cure or therapy. Well, weren't we all flabbergasted when, after nearly two weeks of blood work and prodding, nothing was conclusive. Dr. Shaun contacted his colleagues and used the many resources at his disposal, but we still didn't have an answer. Much to our surprise, Dr. Shaun didn't give up on us, even after all the tests indicated that he ought to be a healthy cat. He recommended a specialist across town who then referred us to a neurologist. Nearly two months after we first met Dr. Shaun, an MRI showed two slow-growing brain tumors.The neurologist and Dr. Shaun worked together with us to decide how to proceed. We chose a drug therapy that kept Sling's quality of life pretty solid up until a few weeks ago.Sadly, Slingshot became very sick recently and this past week, we gathered at our home to bid our eldest cat farewell.  Dr. Shaun was incredibly kind and helpful during what was one of the worst days of my life.I cannot recommend this clinic enough.  I'm glad we have three other cats and a dog that continue to be under his care. We saw both doctors (Dr. Castle with our cat and Dr. Flecker for our dog). They were great, knew their stuff and made me feel like we were still back in Boston. I started going to this clinic about a year ago. Initially I felt very welcomed by the front desk staff as well as the technicians. I always felt ""so so"" about the doctor. The real problem came when my dog got sick. I brought him in for an exam, I did all the recommended diagnositcs and the Dr told me to call with updates. My dog got worse and when I needed advice the Dr would not call me back. I would have to call the clinic several times a day and the Dr would never call me back. I felt so bad to keep bothering the receptionists, but they were always very nice and I felt bad that they had to keep making excuses for a Dr who doesn't have the courtesy to return phone calls. After about 3 days of non-stop calling the Dr finally called to tell me to pick up medication for my dog. When I went to pick it up, the medication wasn't there, there were no notes in my dogs record about what medication he was supposed to get and the Dr. had already gone home for the night. The assistant tried to call the Dr at home but he never answered. The staff was very apologetic and said they would get the medication as soon as they could. I tried to be understanding of the staff because I knew it wasn't their fault. I just don't understand how a Dr can be so unorganized, it seems unethical. The final straw for me was when I went to buy dog food one Friday morning. Where the staff had always been friendly, the receptionist I encountered was VERY rude and made me feel like it was such an inconvenience to buy food. The real kicker is that I found out the rude receptionist is actually the Dr's wife and she is the manager there. Clearly its an inconvenience for the DR to treat my dog. And its an inconvenience to his wife to buy food there. Guess they don't need my $ in their pocket. Find a vet who will give you good care. Great staff; wish they had a better Dr they could support. We recently took our 12-year old cat to the Hillsdale Veterinary Group in Portland for a well-cat check up, and were advised he has a hyper-thyroid condition. They prescribed Felimazole 2.5mg twice daily. We took him in for a second round of blood tests which showed his thyroid was now underperforming, so they cut the dose in half to 1.25 twice daily. Our original prescription was $39 for one month's worth of the original prescription. We found the drug at Petmeds dot com for 80 percent less, and in filing the order with the website, the vet's office called back and said they would match the price of the meds, but that their policy is they don't write prescriptions externally, meaning to another pharmacy. So I said okay, as that is only fair since they are our vet and want to match the price. But then they called back and said that I ordered 5mg tabs from pet meds (which I intended to split in fourths and have the tools to do so) and that they want to do 2.5mg tabs. I then asked if they intended to give me twice the number of pills as I ordered then, as that would be truly matching the price. The assistant told me to hold, then our vet, Dr. Flecker, got on the phone and was extremely rude, accusing me of not wanting to take care of my cat, not wanting to go with the prescribed medication level -- all untrue. I informed him that obviously since I intend to give him the required dose and that I have paid $400 to date on exams and subsequent labs, and have to have him undergo yet more bloodwork at the cost of another $110, that I of course intended to follow the directions and didn't appreciate the accusation as obviously it's not true. He then said I needed to find another vet, that he would not write the prescription and then hung up on me. How is this legal? How can a vet refuse to allow me the choice of purchasing prescriptions elsewhere? Now I have to find another vet, pay more money, etc. all because the vet knows he has that leverage.This is unethical, the OMVA's policy is for them to write the script, but don't enforce it. So now the vet is holding up my medications to the pet as the prescription will run out tomorrow. And who's not taking care of my cat? Read Less

I recently moved to Portland and was really sad to leave my previous vet. One of my friends recommended Dr. Flecker to me for my 2 dogs. I was really anxious about going to a new animal clinic. My previous vet was so patient with my sometimes skiddish Shepard mix. When I walked in for my appointment I was greeted by two very nice receptionist. One even came over to pet Sugar girl and make friends with her. One of the first things I noticed was how clean everything was. So far so good... Right on time, I was greeted by a nurse, Emily. When we walked into the exam room she sat right on the floor with my Sugar girl to pet her! She asked me questions about Sugar and her history. I explained that she can sometimes be shy. I am not sure if she believed me, because Sugar was wagging her tail and even put her paw up to ""high five"" when we weighed her. Dr. Flecker came in and gave her exam and her shots. He was so quick with the shots I barely noticed nor did my dog. He was very nice and seemed to know a lot about her thyroid problem. After everything was done.
