These guys are amazing! Dr.Hana (not sure if that's spelled right) is so wonderful! I came to lombard animal hospital after some not so positive experiences with other vets and they have taken such good care of my dog Gizmo. She had some teeth pulled and the day after I was concerned because her breathing seemed labored. I called them and they had me bring her in that moment and took her back for a check up. She was fine and was just a little tired from the procedure. They didn't even charge me and said "we wanted to make sure she is okay, there isn't a charge for that." I cannot speak highly enough about this place. We found a lump on our kitty's jaw and even though they were booked for the day they were able to fit us in for an appointment that morning. We unfortunately found out that he has a terminal jaw tumor and needed palliative care. Every single person in the office has been so compassionate and kind through this entire process. They are wonderful with our cat and with us. The whole staff has been very patient with all of our many questions and helped us figure out meds and food. They are highly skilled, confident, comforting, and always able to provide the most up to date vet medicine techniques available. We've got both our dogs here regularly...friendly and knowledgeable office staff that work with our pet insurance, and all the vets are great. We've seen them all at this point! If your pet wasn't "Portland" enough, take them to Dr. Nell for a holistic approach and acupuncture. I've seen cats, rabbits, and various other small pets here...though I don't think they do chickens, so not THAT Portland! Read Less

The vets are knowledgeable and caring. But the support staff, oh my! Passive-aggressive, judgemental and just downright rude. Not a pleasant experience for me or my pet, we gave up and moved on. Lombard animal clinic is the very best combination of everything that matters when it comes to the health and care of a pet. Took my Guinea pig here for treatment. I thought Dr. Misty was very good about letting me know ALL my options for my pig's treatment, and she was very upfront about the cost as well. The quality of care my pet received was top-notch, but I have to be honest: The care my family and I received was not. I took my pet in for an emergency on a weekend. I signed a waiver authorizing a set amount in emergency care, with authorization for any further charges. When the vet phoned with an update, I was told that the charges were nearly 50% higher (totalling nearly $600, a very major impact on our family). I was surprised, to say the least, but didn't dispute the charges because I just wanted my pet back, and didn't want to fight over it, especially in such a distraught time. Maybe it's because I'm not in the habit of challenging people giving care to members of my family? In any event, I was upset but let it pass.Three days later, it was clear that my pet as not going to make it, despite the vet's best efforts. I called to ask about euthanasia, and asked if the vet would be willing to waive or at least reduce the charges (an additional $110), given that the initial bill had gone so far over what was authorized. The clerk replied that I could have disputed the charges when they were explained to me. I told her that I wasn't disputing the charges, but asking for help with the final stage of my pet's care, in light of the excess charges. After a conversation with her admin, she came back on the line and said: "You can try the Humane Society. Good luck."Obviously, this vet is a business, not a charity. But having interacted with many vets who truly treated us like family, I cannot recommend this vet. Read Less

I have seen a few vets in Portland over the last 18 years with pet cats and dogs, and these are the best I have seen. They have been incredibly thoughtful and kind and have treated my dogs under extenuating circumstances--car accident, ruptured ACL--along with the mundane, with such sweetness. They think about my budget and my dogs are always very happy to visit greeting staff with jolly tail wagging! Read Less

I called the clinic this morning (Saturday) to see if it was possible to get my older cat in. She's 16 and has a severe case of chin acne that has not been getting better despite a visit with her normal vet.  They were so kind and even though they did not have any openings, they offered to have me drop her off so that if one of the Vets had time between cases, they could look at her.  When I got there, they had some openings and we were able to get in with Dr. Preston right away.  I instantly liked him and liked everything about the staff.  They were all so accommodating.  We were able to get antibiotics, good home care instructions and a follow up appointment, all within less than an hour.  They will be my new vet going forward for sure! We took our rabbit there when he had stopped eating. The staff were very friendly and knowledgable, but I didn't appreciate the $800 fee they wanted to charge me to have X-rays etc. It was only when I asked for an alternative option did they give me one. I think they took good care of our rabbit as they had him in all day, but in the evening my daughter noticed he was covered in some kind of mite or worm. I'm a bit stumped as to why they couldn't see this. I was also disappointed with the follow up calls. I told them about the worm but no-one called back to question it and today I got a call asking how he was and for me to bring him back in for a check up. When I told them unfortunately he didn't make it the line went dead - I'm not sure why they didn't call back to finish up the conversation. I went to Westmoreland Vets to have our other rabbit checked over and found them to be less judgmental and gave a lot more options without pressurizing me to do tests. Read Less

I called the clinic because my rabbit had gotten really sick. They told me to come in right away, and the vet was able to see him within 5 minutes after I got there. Although my bunny didn't end up making it (his respiratory problems were too serious), the vet took the time to tell me about the issue, and even did a free Xray to see the extent of the problem.The doctor and the staff were very knowledgeable and compassionate. Very compassionate, professional staff who were always honest about my late companion bunny Ike's prognosis with renal failure and inability to defecate for a week. The vets told me his prognosis was very guarded, but they allowed me every opportunity and option for him to fight to survive. In fact, Ike did pull through at the last moment and had a final weekend with his bonded bunny partner at home and went peacefully on his own terms. I was extremely heartened to receive a handmade card by the staff at LAH informing me that they contributed to a companion animal memorial program for vet scholarships along with handwritten notes from the staff I had gotten to know so well over the course of the week I had been in the office. In all the years I have taken companion animals to vets, I have never received such care! Read Less

I'm still searching for a vet that doesn't spend the entire visit trying to push you to buy their sponsored products. My dog is currently in pain and suffering from side effects of a product that they insisted we buy, and they won't even see her to help relieve her pain - they're too busy and can't be bothered. The office staff is curt and is more interested in chatting between themselves than helping customers; they make you wait for a long time each visit, only to sell you whatever makes them the most money. They don't tailor treatment to the individual animal - they just recommend piling on expensive products and treatments with no concern for how they might hurt a dog - and this was just a routine visit! When a dog actually vomits during a visit (like mine) and they still insist that you pump her full of four separate new shots and an additional new edible medication that they sponsor, it's clear that they don't care about handling each case with individual care. We're still searching for a good vet, this definitely isn't one of them. Read Less

We have been trusting Dr. Preston and the staff at Lombard Animal Hospital with our precious kitties for years now, and we could not be happier.  One of our cats has asthma and despite years of expensive and stressful treatment it did not clear up until Dr. Preston worked with us to figure out that a high quality, meat only food with lots of omegas would radically decrease her symptoms.  Our other cat had serious IBS for 5 years, despite lots of trips to lots of other vets.  Dr. Preston was patient and non-dismissive enough to help us realize that he is allergic to fish.  The folks at Lombard are always there for us and our cats.  Highly recommended. Though a sad ending to our story, we had a stellar experience at this clinic.I called my regular vet clinic (20+ yrs) because my 16 year old cat was ill. The newish receptionist couldn't fit my cat in for 4 days. I wasn't sure the cat would live that long.So I called Lombard Animal Hospital and the wonderful receptionist worked us into their schedule the same day. Their charges are comparable to other clinics. As a new client, I was given a 10 % discount, unexpected yet appreciated. Saw Dr Misty, who was kind, compassionate, yet realistic about the possibility of recovery of my elderly cat. I appreciate that rather than being made to feel guilty about not spending $1500+ on procedures that may not prolong my pet's life.After blood tests, the decision became apparent and we had her put to sleep. It was not an easy choice, but the right one. Though the clinic didn't really know us, they sent a handwritten sympathy card with a personal message from each staff member. That was really unexpected and kind. Especially for my 14 year old who had to say goodbye to her pet. We will be moving our other pets to this clinic. Read Less

read a couple of the negative reviews of LAH and I really believe those people were either high on gasoline or confusing them with Three Rivers Animal Clinic:(..WE LOVE LOMBARD ANIMAL HOSPITAL and recommend them to every one we know.  We have been taking our kids (3 cats) here for at least 5 years, have gone through several surgeries, with 2 and treated asthma in one (that has all but nearly cleared up!) and kitty IBS in one that has also cleared up.  Seriously, Dr Preston is the bomb!  And as far as price goes, I have always felt like they were very fair about charges.  Sure its not free, (to that person that commented on the price not being free?) but they have to make a living, for god sake.  I have been to over priced vets with terrible service (three rivers in North PDX for example, who are the most expensive spot in town, where we were taking our cats to for several years, yet they still didn't remember us each time we came in and actually confused our cats in their records so they were starting to treat the wrong cats for the wrong issues and didn't ever respond to several emergency calls which is why we finally ditched them, I really could go on and on about 3 rivers and how much I despise them ) but Lombard Animal Hospital is not that kind of vet AT ALL.  We love Dr Preson, and the whole darn crew!  And Amanda at the front desk has a small pet sitting service too and she specializes in special needs pets!  Can't say enough great things about LAH!  We Love you guys! I have 4 pets now, 2 dogs and 2 cats.  I had another elderly cat that had many health concerns and needed to see kitty heaven in the sky.  I was a mess, Dr. Preston was a doll--very sensitive and professional.  He took care of everything and made a difficult situation as good as possible.  I was very grateful.  In emotional times like that, you really appreciate a proper vet who is calm and collected. Dr. Preston and Dr. Nell are very compassionate, kind and knowledgable about what they do.  They have both helped care for my cat and dog for at least 7 years.  We lost our dog Cheetah this past June and Dr. Preston personally called me to express his condolensces, the office sent me a card and I also received a card to notifiy me that a  a charity contribution was made  in Cheetah's name by Dr. Preston.  Despite it was hard to loose my 15 year old friend, I felt great comfort in their thoughtfulness and knowing she had the best care.    I had moved across town to the SW three years ago, making it a challenge to get to appointments since I now fight traffic to get across town but,  it's has always been worth it.    I rarely ever go on yelp to write reviews but, Lombard Animal Hospital deserves the 5 stars! When I moved from WA to Portland I was anxious to find a great vet for Maude, my Westie. She and I visited several veterinarian offices in the general area and settled on Lombard. Right away the staff focused on Maude, asked about her and offered to walk us through the hospital. Maude had a very positive reaction and we have happily been clients for the past 4 years. Zeus and I love everyone at Lombard Animal Hospital! Dr Preston did an amazing surgery to remove a growth on my dog Zeus' eyelid and Zeus is in overall better health since we switched vets and began seeing Dr.Preston. He used to suffer from ear infections and hot spots several times a year but that has virtually ended since he's been under Dr. Preston's care. From the doctors to the staff everyone is very knowledgeable and updated and I know they have Zeus's best interest at heart. I highly recommend Lombard Animal Hospital. Read Less

I have taken my pets to various vets in and around North Portland and BY FAR AND ABOVE, this place is absolutely the best. My elderly dog was having some serious arthritis issues and I finally decided to try acupuncture. It worked very well and the doctor was super knowledgeable about the procedure.  They are very good about explaining vet care and you never feel rushed.I was not having good service with another vet in the area so I decided to change vets permanently. I am so glad I did. The staff is wonderful and so caring of my pets. They even call the next day to check in to see how my girl was doing since the visit.If you are skeptical of the service you are getting with your current vet, I urge you to try out Lombard Animal Hospital. Lombard Animal Hospital is wonderful. We took our elderly, blind, diabetic chihuahua there for years and felt at ease knowing she was in good hands with Dr. Nell and the staff. Dr. Nell was always incredibly caring, knowledgeable and made every effort to take care of our sweet Ella in the final stages of her life. Dr Nell and Dr Preston are a terrific team! The mix of conventional medicine, naturopathy, bedside manner and good humor make the first, the only veterinary clinic that didn't make me want to run screaming from the building, with every animal in tow. The vet techs (shout out to Jordan) call to give updates on how your pet is doing, and they do follow up calls too! An added bonus? Their rates are competitive, and they clear every treatment option with your pocketbook before they surprise you at the end. I can not recommend this place enough. We just had our first visit and I couldn't have been more pleased. All of the staff were friendly and helpful; the customer service is fantastic. I got tons of information loved that Dr. Preston was ready with answers to all of my questions. Our dogs are absolutely precious to us and it was great to see them so lovingly taken care of. They made sure that I had access to after hours support and were mindful of the fact that I'm new to the area so I felt rest assured that I would have all the support I needed in a new city. After years of moving around with the military and several different vets in several different states, we are so happy to have found the folks at Lombard and thrilled that we have found our family vet for life. Dr Nell and Dr Preston are the most down-to-earth people I've ever had for our pets. They've cared for one high-wire cat and two dogs for us. One of those dogs, a rescued pitbull with a heart murmur, not only went totally mellow with Nell, but I also learned more in a 15-min visit with Nell about Buddy's heart and arthritis than i'd learned in 8 prior years of visits with other vets. We eventually lost Buddy - she died quietly one on a sunny August afternoon when, after playing in the sun with our daughter, she came into the kitchen, curled up on her bed, and died in her sleep.  We got a card from the vet's office, and months later when I ran into Dr Nell in a NE Portland coffee shop, she told me how sorry she was about Buddy.  We don't know each other personally, and at that point we hadn't see one another in a long time. I'm telling you - these people care about what they do and who they do it for.Quick highlights:- separate entrances and waiting areas for dogs vs cats- zero pressure to buy products or push optional procedures- fairly holistic approach to our pets' health- locally owned rather than a front for a major national chain (not a veterinarian HMO)- when they bought from prior owners (who were all about moving product and selling procedures), they kept most of the long-term support staff and invested the time and energy to help them get focused on the patients and their neurotic owners. Probably would have been easier to fire everyone and start with a clean slate, but the extra effort seems to have paid off in that everyone seems to genuinely love their job and the animals they care for. They are all very nice and they are great with the animals. But I have never paid more for vet care anywhere. They even charge for follow up visits. Go here if you want great care and can afford to shell out loads of dough for what might seem like a really minor problem. Go elsewhere if you have any type of financial constraints. My wife and I have been bringing our dog and cat to Lombard Animal Hosp. for 7 years. We've always had good experiences, particularly after Nell and her husband took over the practice about 1 1/2 yrs ago. More importantly, when we recently had to put our dog down, the staff and Dr. Nell were fantastic. All the staff had hugs and comforting words for us (we were basket cases).
