I think Dr Behrends is an excellent vet and continue to take my dog there even though I now live 30 min away. He doesn't make appointments (except for surgery on Wednesdays), so you often have to wait. But he's worth it. No nonsense, knows his stuff and immediately referred me to a specialist when my dog developed an unusual eye condition. Not fancy office but very reasonable charges and very nice staff...all family! He has dealt with all my cats even when they were so scared they literally bounced off the walls. He is caring, professional, genuinely likes and cares about animals, and never gives anyone a bad time when their pets are less than stellar patients. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this place. Unprofessional....looks like the place had not been cleaned in at least a year....dirty floor, walls, exam room. Dr. was OK but couldn't determine the mass in our cats abdomen that the vet I saw the very next day felt and suggested an ultrasound that determined the cat had a mass in her stomach that most likely was cancer and passed away a week later. We just moved to the area so we're looking for a new vet for our cat . I was happy with the professionalism and prompt friendly service. . My dog adores Dr. Behrends. Any qualified critter doc can take care of my dog. He is a spry Jack Russell terrier with very few health issues. He had always gone to MAC for shots and whatnot when we lived in the Montavilla area. I recently moved to Camas from Portland and would not consider going to a different vet for my dog's health concerns given the wonderful care he gets every time. Since these guys don't answer their phone or allow you to leave a message for them to return your call with questions and concerns I am curious whether they read reviews of their business on Yelp.  I feel this is start of a business completely lacking consideration and professionalism to the owners of the pets he has served.  Apparently the only way I can address this issue is to return and face another $69 exam and misdiagnosis made in record time.  Along with the inaccurate diagnosis the vet prescribed a very strong antibiotic ("Cipro") at the highest dosages for my dog's weight for 21 days!!!! My dog DOES NOT HAVE ANY SIGNS OF AN INFECTION and has never received antibiotics in his almost 8 yrs of life.  I am also in the medical field and have now had my dog examined by my regular vets, as well.  This particular antibiotic is known to have very negative side effects and is normally used after other methods and antibiotics have failed.  Not to mention, he said to return in ten days where then he would address the wound, which he barely inspected and made no attempt to clean in this brief visit.  Wonder how much that might cost, it sounded complicated.To make matters even more interesting, as would have it, some other family members feel as if when Drs/vets speak its the gospel.  So, when I explained to my wonderful and caring boyfriend that the vet was mistaken, and that I cannot support the vet's diagnosis and subject my dog to this cruel and pointless medication, regardless of how much money we spent on it.  You can imagine how well this went over.I only wished I would have read more "good" reviews to get a better idea of how we may be served at this business before going here.  Short, sweet visit to be sure.  The vet has a good bedside manner, however, he grossly misdiagnosed my pet's condition and, in my opinion, set him up for possible serious, debilitating side effects from the medication he prescribed.  What alarms me the most is that I'm sure most of the vet's pet's owners are very compliant, like my boyfriend would have been, with the Dr.'s orders.  He did not question it at all and would have given every single dose of that medication to our dog.  I believe if that had or would happen, the same dog I have today would not be the same animal in 21 days, and not for the better...but maybe for the vet!In my profession, we still say, "First, do no harm".  Shouldn't we expect the same in this field?   I hesitated to write this and was going to "walk in" to address it, ask for my $ back, etc.  Then I was just going to call and see what we may achieve.  But, that may only benefit me and not the pets of other people.  I don't need my money back.  I just want people to feel empowered and that they have the ability to learn and discern certain things for themselves. I have been seeing Brian Behrends DMV for at least 35 years and my parents took our family pets to his dad in the same location. He is the best doctor with the most empathy I have ever encountered. My husband died recently and Dr. Behrends knew how much I needed my dog and how important she was to me and was so nice and helpful and made every effort to make things easier for me. He and his wife do a great job and are wonderful people. I would recommend their services to anyone. They don't make doctors like this anymore. .for animals or people. Read Less

Had a good experience with him, they are right down the street from me.  They're open for drop-in I think 3 days/ week from 9-11 and like 2-5, not on Friday or Wednesdays afternoons, and no weekends.  Unless I'm on summer break, these hours don't consistently work for me or my husband unfortunately, so we have to find somewhere else. The second generation veterinarian clinic is as good a you'll find anywhere. We have taken our animals to Dr. Brian for over 25 years and the level of loving care and personal interest is as strong, if not stronger than it was with our first animals. I've hesitated to write this review for two reasons. One, I wanted to be super sure that things really did pan out the way this vet said they would. And second, if that was the case, I kind of want to keep this place secret! This vet is the real deal. He really seems to be this magic dog whisperer, 'doctor doolittle' type. He really has a way with animals and as others have mentioned , he's not one to jump to ordering a bunch of tests right away. I truly feel that what I'm paying for here in terms of services is the vets own personal wisdom. The most recent time I took my dog here, it was the absolute sickest I have ever seen a dog. He had all kinds of scary symptoms and especially concerning to me was that he wouldn't eat whatsoever, which is the craziest thing in the world for this particular dog. The vet didn't cause me additional fear, and instead offered some quick fix solutions to make my dog more comfortabe, and said he was fairly certain my dog would be on the mend within a couple of days. I couldn't have been more certain that this would not be the case, but I've never been more glad to be wrong. One thing I also like about this place is that they don't actually have appointments. You simply drop in during set hours (usually at least 9-11am I believe) and wait to be seen. This could create an issue for some, but for me, it's provided peace of mind when I can just show up and know my dog can be treated that very same day. The office itself is also very low frills and not a lot going on- but for a vet, that's perfectly okay with me. Their primary focus is clearly on giving quality care. Read Less

We brought our pups to Dr. Behrends after an abysmal experience at a popular animal hospital, and we've never looked back. The doc is the sole vet at this clinic, and even though he's running a business, pets are the priority. Very caring and intuitive. His advice and instructions for care are always "spot" on (pardon the pun). He handles our dogs' dental care as well. So happy his clinic is close by! Read Less

I found this place on Yelp.  You feel like you are stepping back in time when you enter this building.  Its right out of Mad Men.  The day I went it was a husband and wife duo running the office.  The wife was really well dressed and sort of fancy and she ran the front desk, but also assisted her husband when he needed help.  Here you can just walk in to get treatment.  You don't need to register and become a patient first, you don't have to make an appointment.  You just show up during their office hours with your pet.  This is a really nice service to offer customers.  I would say that the costs are about average for vets....I think its expensive, but I guess they are all expensive.  The office visit cost is $69 plus you pay for whatever meds or services they provide.  My cat got a check up and an abscess cleaned and an antibiotic shot and the bill was $120.  I guess that isn't too bad. Beat Vet in Portland. I've taken my dogs there for years. 2 Doggie Dental extractions, 1 neutering and various other problems solved. All visits were easy for the dogs and, when I picked them up, they were fine and frisky. They all like going to the vet now, Excellent and compassionate care for your pets. As the daughter of a physician, I have met hundreds of doctors in my lifetime. And from my experience, while a doctor may be knowledgeable, many don't have the compassion and customer-facing skills that separates the good from the truly great. In my opinion, Dr. B. has a gift. Not only was he able to efficiently diagnose my dog's eye infection and prescribe antibiotics that have already helped, but he was able to calm both my furry friend and I down within seconds, even though my dog was in severe pain. I had a bad experience with a very invasive, test-crazy at-home vet, so I was looking for someone down to earth, kind, and not too invasive. I took my 13 year old cat in to Montavilla, sure he was dying. Dr. B was very kind with my guy, and very sensitive that I had my daughter with me. He told us what he thought, and gave us options of having a lot of tests, less conclusive tests, or just keeping him comfortable and letting nature take its course. He didn't make us feel guilty about choosing to let him have a peaceful end instead of taking him to a specialist for lots of tests that I felt would confirm what we knew, but not offer him any more quality of life. He gave us some fluids and advice for what to look for next and how to keep him comfortable. When I brought him back to be put down I felt like Dr B was hurting with me. It can't be easy to be so empathetic, I imagine every night he swears he's not going to do this job anymore, but then he realizes how much we all need him. Later the office sent a sympathy card and had made a donation in our cat's name to Dove Lewis. I thought that was extra nice. This is a no-frills clinic. The waiting room decorations could stand a dusting. There are no appointments. It is very hard to have to wait when you are bringing your pet in to be put down. But I've now taken our new HSUS kitten in and had three follow up phone calls with the doc, who has been very patient with all my shelter kitty questions. Dr. Behrends is a warm and caring veterinarian who will handle whatever is dealt to him. My cat Ginger was aggressive and mean. Dr. Behrends treated him anyway and definitely saved one of his nine lives. Going to Dr. Behrends is a little like stepping back in time, in a good way. But if you want the ultimate, lots of tests and fees, you will have to ask him for it, he doesn't always recommend it.
