As an older person and lifelong pet owner, I have been in and out of a lot of pet care places. The Pearl Animal Hospital has to be one of the best I have ever encountered. The premises are spotless and retain their like-new appearance. Most important is that everyone on staff are caring professionals who will do whatever it takes to give you and your pet the best possible service. I had a highly technical issue regarding vaccinations and international travel. Pearl Animal Hospital researched the issues, provided support on the particular country, and got us through the USDA certification process with constant and patient attention to every detail. I highly recommend them. Read Less

I adopted a rescue cat earlier this year, and my vet shortly after diagnosed late stage chronic kidney disease. Recently, I left my kid's soccer game to find my cat weak and disoriented and unable to see/hear. I stayed awake with her all night. After looking online in the morning, I found Pearl Animal Hospital since my vet, like a lot of others, doesn't have Sunday hours. The receptionists were super compassionate and welcomed me and my cat to the clinic as a walk-in appointment. The veterinarians and technicians were exceptional, and they expedient in getting an exam and stabilizing my cat. They determined that she had had a stroke. Although I's spent the better part of a year trying to give my poor rescue the best quality of life, I asked the team about deciding put my cat down. The doctor counseled me and left me with all information and time I needed to make a decision. After some discussion with family and prayer, I knew that it was time. The team at Pearl helped me along with the process, step-by-step. I am so grateful to the team for making my good-bye so comfortable, digniified, and the best possible one I could hope for. My heartfelt thanks to Pearl! Read Less

I'll start with the good. If you want a friendly environment when you visit (not necessarily when you call), and you'd like the office to be relatively pretty... they are good for that. Unfortunately, you don't pick a vet because you enjoy hanging out with them. I'm livid with this place. I took my puppy here twice, saw two different doctors - one did nothing for her eye problem and the other made it worse. They were patronizing and treated me like I'm an idiot when I called in concerned that their medication was making her eye visibly red and irritated. They were slow and rude to get back with me about this urgent problem. I ended up calling an old vet two states away for advice, and running her into an emergency vet before getting a call back. (I also asked a vet online for advice and none of these three other doctors thought the medication she prescribed was a good idea or that I should keep using it.) Dr. Lord was so certain that this medication was right for her, that she said if I brought her back in she could give a different form (ointment instead of drops) of the EXACT SAME MEDICATION. The eye exam and medication incident with them made the problem so much worse than it was and has added considerable cost and suffering for our poor puppy. Additionally, I never complained about price with them - not once, yet they spent way too much time justifying their costs to me... even though, I'd gladly pay three times what they charge IF IT ACTUALLY WORKED. I'm furious, however, that they charged me to mess up my puppy's eye. What kind of service is that? They really should be more of dog life coaches or something than actual medical "professionals." Their happy place is lecturing you on training and spaying when you're there for an actual problem. I've had the spay talk now about four times... I'll do it when we think best. Maybe you should fix real issues before they become emergencies. Read Less

I brought my Australian Cattle Dog mix in for our first visit to Pearl Animal Hospital yesterday for an annual exam and a few vaccination updates. It was by far the best experience I've ever had at a veterinary clinic!Every employee seemed to genuinely engage with us to ensure our needs were met and that we both felt comfortable. My dog is friendly and well-behaved but can be anxious, and I was so pleased with how smoothly everything went. I'm sure they see a lot of the same things day to day, but the fact that they still took the time to individualize our experience and avoided making assumptions about what was best for us really stands out. I was permitted to stay in the room with my dog while vaccinations were administered, and that made such a huge difference in his level of comfort!Dr. Scott was very present as she answered all of my questions, extremely gentle while treating my dog, and thorough in making her recommendations. In addition to the standard physical exam, she was also highly observant about behavioral indicators, which gave me the impression that the clinic views pet well-being holistically. They also followed up with a pet health report card summarizing the visit, which I found super helpful.I would definitely recommend this clinic to any pet owner, and maybe especially to those who are prone to being sensitive or anxious! Anyway when we moved to the pearl we were a bit intimidated by the nice and clean office of this place wondering if they would over charge like our last vet, but it's not, they are really clear and honest about all the charges, the front desk is super nice about scheduling and dr Anderson is just the best. She's the only usda certified vet in the area so that kinda tells it all. They even sent us a super cute greeting card. I'm so torn on my feelings about this place. I love their infectious energy and obvious love for the animals they treat. But I often leave feeling like a bad pet owner because I can't afford extra tests or supplements for my animals. They generally provide you with a low and high cost of your visit. The low is the minimum you'll pay to get whatever necessary done on your animal. The high is additional things - more in depth tests, extra medicine, etc. I always end up going with the low - which is generally a few hundred dollars. If you have tons of cash to blow on your animals or don't easily feel guilt (unlike me) then you'll love this place. During my last visit for an annual heartworm/shots visit for my lab mix, I was presented with a higher option that included additional tests for my animal with the comment, "I'm pretty sure I know what you'll pick, but this extra test will tell you a lot more about your animal's health." Er....okay. Perhaps I look cheap. I dig their convenient location near my apartment, and hope I can keep my visits to them at the bare minimum annual, but I think in the future I may look for a different vet who won't try to upsell me on additional services if I have an abnormal visit for a health problem. I always leave feeling like a bad dog mom - and my two spoiled dogs, plus the dozens I've fostered in the past, would hopefully agree I'm not. Read Less

I'm a new dog owner, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.  I thought, initially, that the clinic was great!  Within a few days of my first ($600) appointment, I received a very lovely note about how happy they were to participate in my doggy's care--signed by the whole staff.  Then, it occurred to me what a "suck-up" thing that is to do. But, so what if they want to market themselves? It's competitive business, particular in the Pearl.  BUT, whenever I came in, the work was done by the vet tech, not the doc--om several occasions. And the tech was not certified, which is a huge deal; it means that they are skimping on personnel. So, when I went to see the groomer, she said that my little guy had "clogged" anal glands -- which is both common in Yorkies, easy to fix (she did it immediately) and had been causing pain to my dog.  The would-be tech didn't recognize it.  By that time, I'd spent $1300.  My take-home lesson was don't pay for expertise if it's not there. At the start of a week-long vacation in Portland, our dog Lo suddenly started falling down and could not keep herself balanced. It was an hour before Pearl Animal Hospital closed, so we did not expect that they could fit us in. However, not only did they give us an appointment, they stayed late with no complaint to help her. Everyone in the office was kind, gentle, and very very clearly genuinely interested in figuring out what was happening to Lo and how to help. Dr. Lord did a thorough exam, tests, and clearly explained the diagnoses and likely prognosis for Lo. Our entire visit including running blood and urine tests was WAY less expensive than I anticipated, and not only did Dr. Lord call us to discuss results, but the office called several times during the week to check on Lo. Thankfully, my dog is doing much better, and while we hope to avoid more emergency vet trips, we know where to go while in Portland! Read Less

If you want the best for your pet, steer clear!  I originally took my dog in because she was behaving strangely after our cross -country move to Portland.  After the vet and vet tech told me she needed a blood panel test, full exam, and then sold me $110 worth of heart worm medication (a total of $350 for just a drop in visit), I was then told she needed a dire dental cleaning and tooth extraction, and that it should be done at once.  Being the concerned pet parent I am, I was eager to get it scheduled and did so on the spot.  I was quoted $1,900-$2,900 for the procedure, and was told that the $2,900 would be the top end of the cost.  Ok, sticker shock!  However, I knew it was needed for her health.  I notified them that my husband (who was not there for the examination) would be bringing her for the procedure as I was traveling for work. They instructed that we not feed her breakfast the day of the procedure, and to bring her in promptly at 8 am for surgery following that.  He dropped her off, and at that time they told him the procedure was to cost $2,300, right in line with the quote.  He also asked that they call as soon as the procedure was done.  When it was 3pm and he hadn't heard anything, he decided to call, and they hadn't even started her surgery.  She had gone almost 24 hours without food for no reason.  They assured us that they were about to start the surgery and they would let us know as soon as it would be complete.  Shortly after they hung up, they called my husband to say that the new cost was $3,300.  Absurd.  We ask that they not do the procedure and he then went to pick up our confused, hungry dog.  The vet behaved obliviously when my husband interacted with her, and there's no way you could get us to return.  Seriously.  Think twice about where you go for your pet's care.  i would not return.  If anyone had a great recommendation for a good, local vet that is interested in the health of my pet, please let me now - I'm in the market. I had been looking for a practice to take my two cats to and because this hospital is close to where I live, it seemed like a good option. I found the staff to initially seem friendly but they did not explain charges or treatments to me as I would have liked. The staff was rude when I declined updating vaccines and that I did not agree with the doctor's opinion of indoor cat care. I was also really impressed with how up-front they were about charges--we were given a printout with projected charges for the visit before it was completed, and were able to select which solutions wed like to opt for at the time. All in all, the cost was extremely reasonable for the care our dog was given. We know our pet is well-taken-care-of and would recommend Pearl Animal Hospital to anyone! Read Less

Our kitty had sudden severe back pains and we searched for vet on a weekend morning. Pearl Animal was not the closest but the only one who could fit us in right away. When we arrived, they were super friendly and welcoming. A veterinarian assessed our kittty quickly, considering we were walk-in with no appt. The doctor discussed our treatment plan and options with a full discolsure on the costs (I am recently unemployed!) I felt like we had full choices in deciding the best care for our kitty. The treatment and follow up plan were explained in detail, and they called the next day to check up on. The premises are very clean, welcoming, and modern, and I feel much bettter here than at any human hospital. Altogether top notch service, staff, and hospital. Read Less

My kitty can be...quite behaviorally difficult at times, especially when it involves a trip to the vet. I have taken her to numerous different animal hospitals and only one has been able to work with and treat her. That animal hospital is Pearl Animal Hospital! I really don't know what I would do to provide my cat with the sub-q fluids, medicine, blood draws, and more that she needs to survive without the skilled technicians at this hospital! Matt is the cat guru. He works collaboratively with my cat and adjusts his method whenever she becomes extra difficult or less so. His flexibility, warm, genuine and comforting attitude, and collaborative technique works magic with my cat. Sarah and Emily are just as amazing as well!! Despite my kitty's severe aggressiveness, everyone who works at Pearl Animal Hospital never fail to spread the positive and loving energy to me and my kitty. Bottom line: they achieve the most effective results while ensuring the least amount of stress on my cat. I love Pearl Animal Hospital! :) Oh yes, and Dr. Anders, Dr. Lord, and Dr. Williams are the best veterinarians!! They do a great job of communicating my cat's condition in a way that I can understand, combined with empathy and sincere affection. Read Less

I only see five stars possible, but I'd give million stars to Pearl Animal Hospital if I could. I am certain that we will never go anywhere else as long as we live in Portland (or within 100 miles of Portland). The Dr.'s and staff are absolutely wonderful and truly care for our dog. They give him lots of personalized attention (and treats!), while sneaking in some thorough veterinary care. I just happened on a write-up of Dr. Anders in ""Explore the Pearl"" so I took my border collie there when he was sick. It turned out to be an infection. As soon as we came in, they put him at ease immediately - the gentle handling and comfy exam room kept him comfortable and relaxed. And they fixed him right up with some good medicine for a very reasonable price. After our first good experience, we decided to get a dental cleaning, which we'd been delaying for a while. Before the procedure Dr. Ander's gave us a detailed treatment plan (basically a price estimate) for me to sign off on. I knew the price having considered the procedure with other vet clinics, and they seemed very reasonable again. They needed to extract 2 decayed teeth, and they noticed some lesions during the procedure, and called to make sure we were OK with fixing up these teeth as well. After some questions and a thorough explanation, we told them to proceed. The final bill was well under the worst-case estimate and was definitely a very good value given the quality of care and time they spent on the procedure (yes I had them give me updates throughout the whole thing). Afterward, they showed us the before-and-after pictures, and it's no wonder the difference I see in our dog. If I had teeth like that, I'd be a bit less active, too. So thanks Pearl Animal Hospital for giving us our happy hyperactive puppy back again! Read Less

We greatly appreciated the wonderful care our dog Paco got from Pearl Animal Hospital -- we've dealt with many vets and this place has (by far) the most considerate and caring staff you can find! They went the extra mile with explaining what was going on and communicating on a regular basis to see how our old dog was doing and if there were any concerns we had about his health. They were also very considerate about relaying what was vital for our dog's health and what kinds of services were optional -- we never felt pressured into purchasing services we weren't comfortable with. Even when we had to make the difficult decision to put our dog to sleep, we were comforted and put at ease by the professional and considerate interactions with Dr. Anders and her staff. I was so pleased and impressed with the respect, compassion and grace that I encountered during a very difficult time for our family. I know that any other dog we get will be going to this vet. Dr. Anders' and her staff's professional expertise is easily accessible and they TRULY care for your animal's wellbeing. Your pet deserves the care you'll find at Pearl Animal Hospital. Read Less

Terrible vet, do NOT recommend! Okay, they have a nice office. But not worth the prices and, most importantly, the quality of care. I took my cat there for a simple teeth cleaning. It was ridiculously expensive (twice as much as other vets) and when my cat came back she was limping horribly on the leg which the IV was in. I expected the limp to go away after a few weeks, or even a couple months, but it did not. I took her back to the vet and told them that ever since the procedure her leg has been ruined. The vet was not at all apologetic and did not take responsibility. She suggested I pay for a bunch of expensive tests. The vet and staff's demeanor isn't very friendly, in fact they seem to guilt you into spending more money and taking your pet in to see them more often. Today I was at a local pet store, buying my cat glucosamine. It's over a year since her teeth cleaning procedure and her limp has never improved much. I told the pet shop owner what had happened and she said ""Oh yeah, I've heard terrible things about Pearl Vet! They are really over priced and I've heard quite a few complaints about the quality of care there!"" When this pet store first opened, they used to give out cards for Pearl Vet, but after hearing a lot of horror stories, they've pulled their cards and no longer recommend them. I'm sure Pearl Vet is fine for routine vaccinations, especially if you're rich. But I wouldn't trust them with any major procedure. It makes me sad to see my cat limping around and holding her paw up. Read Less

I followed Dr. Anders from her previous clinic and was overall pretty happy with our experiences at the Pearl. The important word here is ""WAS."" The vet is knowledgeable and current on topics from pharmaceuticals to oral care. I was not thrilled that they are sponsored by Royal Canin and therefore advocate using their food exclusively. Have you read the ingredient labels? More chemicals than actual food. They are also extremely pricey for basic services and will add on products without disclosing if it is vital for the pet's health. Straight information without a guilt-inducing pitch would be nice. Also, the staff (excluding the doctor and the front desk) are condescending and talk with money signs in their eyes. I have been to the clinic for several visits, but this will be my last time. When I am there, I can ask how much their many add-ons will cost and try to weigh that against what I have read (because they will never be forthright). But when I dropped my dog off for dental cleaning, their add-ons were so much so that it doubled my already expensive estimate. Talk about bait and switch. Plus, these are services that other vets offer free of charge. Don't be fooled by the veneer. You're paying for infostructure, not for quality care. Read Less

Pearl Animal Hospital is, for lack of a better word, amazing. The second you step inside the clinic smells wonderful, weird for a vet clinic, right?! And the staff immediately greets you with a warm smile. The atmosphere could be a vet clinic or a local, chic Pearl bar. It's very clean and chicly but minimally decorated and has awesome artwork on the walls. As for your pet children, all of the staff immediately gravitates toward them. My dog, a daschund, is usually skiddish around strangers but she was immediately attracted to Dr. Anders and has always enjoyed seeing her...that's right, actually enjoyed seeing her doctor who pokes and prods her. Dr. Anders is 100% concerned with the welfare of your pet, not what goes in her pocket, and that is hard to find. Her willingness to put your pet first is evident with every decision she makes. The staff always remembers us both every time we come in and even remembers details about our lives. I can't say enough great things about this clinic and highly recommend you bring your loved little one here. Always convenient, available parking or walk if you live in Northwest or the Pearl.

Read Less

I have been bringing my 3 cats and dogs to this clinic for over a year.  The vets are incredibly smart and thorough.  I have never had my animals have such a complete physical exam, including a rectal, ever in my life.  All the vets have explained the issues and options to me thoroughly with kindness and patience.  Fees have not been higher than other vet clinics with far less intensity of service.  Will never go back to any other clinic.  Drive to the Pearl from Lake Oswego totally worth the effort.  Highly recommend this clinic.

Not a fan. I did not have a positive experience at this hospital and do not recommend it. I found the cost of services (exam, vaccines, flea/tick medications) to be higher than other hospitals in the area. In my opinion, the poor client service I received at this hospital was not worth the money I ended up spending on the vet care. Read Less

We had a wonderful first visit at the Pearl Animal Hospital this past week. Rather than putting our 50lb brute up on the table, they got down on the floor with her. They handled all the issues and questions we had, provided options for treatment, and even identified some swelling (possible allergies) that we were not aware of.

Just go see the folks at Pearl Animal Hospital! Read Less

Our dog gets so freaked out at the vet that we have found it to be a good litmus test of the clinic. We have been to clinics with her where they have been very understanding and compassionate towards her. And there have been clinics where they have tried to drag her down the hall by her leash. (No joke.) But they are so kind to her at raleigh hills vet... I cannot tell you. They rally around her and give her all kinds of love and support. She also got great medical treatment and the vet has personally called the house to check on her. I love this clinic! Read Less
